Roland JX-10 with Retroaktiv MPG-70
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 25 авг 2020
- 5 minute deep dive into one of the best analog synths ever made: the Roland JX-10, controlled by the Retroaktiv MPG-70 Programmer. The MPG-70 is a brilliant piece of gear in that it completely opens up the JX-10, bringing every parameter to a physical control surface. It even lets you control both upper and lower tones simultaneously - something no other controller can do. The icing on the cake is that it can control ANY synth - hardware or software, using standard MIDI CCs!
My JX-10 has the optional Vecoven ROM, which is a must-have to bring this glorious synth into the 21st century and allow it to be controlled via MIDI CCs. For more on these great tools & upgrades:

I easily understand why the staff at Retroaktiv decided to call it the MPG-70. It resembles the MPG-80 that was sold separately from the MKS-80 module, and it is specifically intended to couple with one of the Super JX models instead of the 8p.
I love how the Vecoven upgrade sounds. I might eventually decide to have that (or the Kiwi mod) installed on both my 8p and my MKS-70 module. Not to be critical, but the only thing I would have wanted it to include that apparently isn’t is a third character in the parameter adjuster that would allow for less realtime stepping. That is something I noticed when I learned how to patch my erstwhile JX-10 without using a programmer and my Minimoog Voyager right next to it: the Voyager parameters are adjustable from 0 to 999, whereas a JX model’s parameters are only adjustable from 0 to 99 and are somewhat sonically limited as such.
WOW what Power both the SUPER JX and your chords, I have this also in mint condition with all the Vecoven version 4+your Retroaktiv, Thanks Jim, regards Clive
Yes indeed, the JX-10 is one of my favorite synths of all time!
@@JimDaneker Just bought mine from Japan and Frederic is sending me the upgrades now need the final piece from Retroactiv 😁
Beautiful sounds. Now I believe you know what you're doing. Love it.
Barbara Daneker Haha - told you I knew what those knobs do! 😂
I LOVE my JX-10. It's such a fascinating and often overlooked and forgotten synth. I have a DX-5, and since they're essentially the same width, they're on the same keyboard stand.
Yep, I had both of those together at one point too! Very complementary synths 😁
@@JimDaneker That's awesome! Using the left hand on the DX-5 for punchy bass and the right hand for pads or brass on the JX-10...running the DX-5 through chorus and a slight sharp reverb....It's awesome. I feel like the JX--10 is one of those things that's overlooked right now, but will probably blow up in price later on.
@@jon_c yes indeed! I think the JX 10 was always a bit underrated, but it's a monster synth - especially with the Vecoven mod, and the Retroaktiv controller. That puts it up there with other analog legends, IMO!
@@JimDaneker I don't have the Retroaktiv controller. I just have the PG-800. I basically have to macro Vecoven parameters with my QY700 (all my stuff is old because I bought it a long time ago because it was cheap) Speaking of Retroaktiv, they prototyped a Korg DSS-1 controller but seemed to have cancelled it. I was disappointed as I'm tired of using a 90s-era rack-mount Windows machine to dive into the DSS-1. Also, great demo; subscribed.
@@jon_c very kind, thanks and welcome! Stay in touch! 😁👊🏻
That intro tune is so tasty! Nice demo, huge fan of Retroaktiv!!
Thanks much! Me too 😁
The dream.
Fantastic 😲❤️
Okay I’m sold . I have a JX8P ..but I’m getting a jx10 with retroactive controller now lol . Vecoven mod a must
Yes indeed - the JX-10 is a monster with the Vecoven mod and a Retroaktiv MPG-70!
I could watch this forever Jim! Tks for sharing.
Now Im thinking about buying an outboard parameter controller for my DW-8000 (GAS!!!)
Glad you like it! Retroaktiv makes great gear!
Adore this sound! JX10
It’s a monster synth!
Good God.
Maaaan mess with the jx8p back in the 80s and ended up with this puppy jx10, never parting with it, and got to update mines from vecoven. Sounds good!!!!!
Yep, it’s SO good!
@@JimDaneker still blown away with the vecoven mods.... I also got to get the super synth project display replacement. better display. keep JX-ing!!!!!
@@dhampex3631 yep, the Vecoven mod is essential!
What’s better than a SuperJX? 2 of them, in dual mode, stacked, slightly detuned from one another, one on the left channel, one on the right. That’s 8 oscillators per voice. Jaw dropping! Oh! And go ahead and upgrade to Vecoven 4 if only for the much faster envelopes. Not to mention the gorgeous PWM. The nice thing about the MPG-70 is that you can control 2 or more synths simultaneously or individually.
Just a friendly note that there are two DCOs per voice and 12 voices so 24 oscillators total 😌
@@helisoma Correct. 24 oscillators times 2 synths for a total of 48. Nothing exceeds like excess 😉
10/10 bravo
Thank you 😁
Holy crap!!😍😍😍
What sequencer is that controlling everything? Are all sounds in the intro from JX?
Logic. And it's all JX!
incredible...epic...committed to get this pairing 😍🤗...and subbed 😎
Thanks! It is a fantastic combo, especially once you get the Vecoven upgrades done!
@@JimDaneker can I ask, do you have the 3.xx or 4.xx (PWM) Vecoven mod?
@@helisoma version 4 - that's the full PWM treatment.
thanks and a pristine jx10 is on the way 🤗 (with 3.xx and midi)
@@helisoma congrats!
Oh my god.
Hi Jim, Thanks for the demo. Will this work with my JX-8P? Can't wait for your next live access!
Yes indeed, it has a native JX8P mode as well! Check it out on their website - retroaktivsynthesizers.com
So that programmer handles the new parameters added by the Vecoven ROM?
Jeff Gibson yep, it was really designed specifically with the Vecoven in mind!
@@JimDaneker I'm going to need to get my hands on one of those once I get my JX10 back from Allen.
Jeff Gibson oh my word yes - it’s a must-have and completely opens up the JX!
Don't think I don't hear those MWS progressions in those chords you're playing. LOL!!
Jeff Gibson They might be something he’d write (we’re definitely cut from the same cloth!) but those are mine 😁
