The thing is Erebus is the worse but in a good well written way. He is written to be hated amd does a fine job at it. People want him to get his due and sometimes he is close but he always gets away. Feeding the cycle making him more hated.
Erebus is one of the most well written villains in any fictional setting. From Horus Rising to The End And The Death, his story arc builds villainy to new heights. I can't think of another villain in an IP who captures the overall disdain of a Fandom with the phrase "Fuck Erebus"...that's powerful (and deserves its own T-shirt). Grammaticus' character arc is loopy, but actually makes sense when you think about it. He's not a natural Perpetual, he was engineered to become one. His natural ability was as a Logokine, and thats what explains his chaotic mindest in my opinion. I felt he started as a Heretic and grew into a Loyalist through his friendship with Oll, which is one of the only Horus Heresy characters to do so (other one I can think of is Actae, which was forced).
I actually like John. No idea why people think he’s a Mary Sue, he fails so many times, fucks up a lot too, puts himself through so much shit. In TETD3 he uses enuncia to smash Horus to a pulp, literally exploding his own mouth. But when they see Horus is healing he is literally shitting bricks, so scared of Horus he cant move.
