    There is no excuse for any new part to have design defects where they don’t function. And it should be unacceptable to pay high prices for defective or damaged items . If a person is paying $1k for bumpers, they should expect them to be perfect! This is why I started my own parts review channel. Thanks for sharing!

    That's the trouble these days to find perfect conditioned pieces. There is always something off or doesn't fit right. So It's nice to see where that you bought your pieces and what the quality is.

    Given the lack of quality in the aftermarket, I still think that the best thing is to get original parts in good condition, there is no other choice, I just purchased a totally original 65/77 pop-up set in very good condition for $ 300

    As an aside, I see that your restorations are so perfect that the cars are almost TOO nice to actually drive every day. The owner would always be looking for that first paint chip, etc. And of course, like a classic 60s Vette, you just can't park them at the mall or a stadium's parking lot.

    So, I found, putting the seals on my pop outs that it goes a lot quicker if i lube the seal with a 50/50 mix of Dawn and water, then use a dollar plastic tool for clay modeling. Once i got it started it was like doing a zipper, about 5 minutes.

    I, too, ordered a set of pop-outs for my '62 Beetle from K-Volks. The price was good, fast shipping, and excellent packaging. The mis-alignment where the ends of the frame meet also had the same amount of mis-alignment as yours. The rubber seal thinner than German seals. I will likely replace the light-weight seal before installation. I haven't installed them yet, because I want a better fit and finish. Keeping my eye open for a set of used early pop-outs. BTW, there were a few screws missing, but K-Volks was very responsive in sending what as missing.

    Good video Chris. Happy to see those pop outs and how they look always wondered about em. Maybe get a pair down the road just to have. Also have some cip1 bumpers haven't put em on the bug yet but happy I didn't pay 1000. They were 700 when I bought em. Very informative 👏

    Who doesn't love classic VW bugs. I have to ask you something. Chris have you ever had a customer request a Herbie Love Bug VW car from the Disney movie franchise? The old original was a 1963 Wimbledon white with matte Grey interior with a roll cage. They went with that interior finish so it would not reflect the camera crews lights.

    Greetings Chris from an Unusually Sunny West of Ireland. I have been working with metal press machines for some years professionaly and despair at the careless quality of bug parts manufactured in China. Regarding the the thickness 1.5mm is not widely used for modern day car sheet metal products, it's even thinner and lighter at 1 mm or less for body panels often 0.8mm.
    Back in the day German made bugs would have used similar steel thickness of 1.5mm but a layer of brass added before chroming increased the thickness , strength, durability and corrosion resistance to a higher level than today for sure.
    Chrome over stainless steel won't look as good today because they skip the brass and toxic chemicals used back in the day for environmental reasons when chroming I believe.

    Hi Chris Another great video! I appreciate all the info you put out there for vw beetle hobbyist like myself. I have a 66 factory sea blue. I've been returning to mostly "factory spec" (I'm keeping it 12v, I figure that's a good upgrade) after a "resto mod" with ALOT of incorrect parts. Anyway my question is do you know the factory bumper gauge? thanks

    I just purchased lower end pop outs from CIP1 for a 71 super beetle and regret it.... major fit issues on both the top and bottom of the window. The alignment of the chrome is tolerable, but the visible space between the car and window is definitely not. Not really sure how to fix that.

    It is sad to see that the prices have gone up so high and the quality has gone down I long for the 80's back when parts were cheap and the worst case scenario you were getting parts made in Brazil or Mexico .

    CIP1 sent me thier "finest" chrome plated stainless Euro
    bumpers ($900 bucks) with adapter brackets and Euro style bumper gaurds ( They don't tell you they are EMPI trash) which did not fit without drilling the bumper and adding a chrome plated bolt if you wanted it to look right. They were good about listening to me and promptly got back to me telling me that in the product notes they have ( but the buyer doesn't). I got through it and the only consolation from them was that they would send me a couple bolts WITH MY NEXT ORDER.
    I told them thanks for nothing and there most likely never be another order.
    That is what you get for close to $1K from CIP1.

    At $1000 for bumpers I am wondering if re-chroming is a better alternative IF your bumpers are not full of holes and are straight?

    • @classicvwbugs
      @classicvwbugs  3 года назад +4

      Chroming could be more money, but if they are originals and in decent shape, then yeah fix the originals.

    • @johncollins5552

      Re chromed originals will be better than any new bumper 9 times out of 10, some Chrome shops are much better than others in their quality of work. Check out previous customers for the truth!

      Advance Plating (they do really top quality work) wanted $2500 to do front and rear bumpers on a 73 Vert ghia I restored. But that was going to be more than the owners wanted to spend.
      I found Space Coast Plating in Fl. that did both bumpers and 4 bumper guards for $1400. They did a great job everything was straight and metal was finished well before plating.

    I agree with not wanting to use the towel bar grommets, but if you have to use that gasket where the bumperette aligns with the bumper blade, what's the real difference?

    • @vayabroder729

      I had a ‘69 Ghia and it had grommets between the bumpers and the overriders from factory; I suppose Beetles didn’t.

    Poor quality parts is why I started my VW parts review channel. There is no excuse for any high dollar new part having defects that are considered “normal.” And there is no excuse for any new part to have a defective design that prevents it from working.

    Its odd that of all the places to get pop-out windows, it just so happens to be Australia.
    Simply because OZ never had pop-out windows on Beetles in the 20 years they were sold here - whether imported or completely manufactured from the ground up.
    (Between 1959 and 1968, Beetles were completely manufactured in OZ, not from CKD kits)
    Also there are very few Beetles still here - probably less a couple of hundred or maybe even 100 across the whole country so there'd be no market for p/o windows.
    I have a suspicion the windows you got were made in China. No way would you get "poor" quality OZ-made parts - especially retro parts.

    • @azmike3572
      @azmike3572 2 года назад

      (Every time I see "OZ" I'm reminded of L. Frank Baum's series of 14 books, starting with "The Wizard of Oz" (1900).

    1k for stainless steel? That's a bargain. Look at the cost of re-chroming a 1950's American car. You're looking at 50k. Oh, and the towel rack was only on U.S. models to meet DOT bumper height requirements. I bet original bumpers were about the same quality or less. I remember seeing early beetles and gias and the towel racks looked like add-ons from JC Whitney.

    how disappointing that new parts that cost outrageous prices aren't quality. What good is "hand made" car parts? I get hand made other things where imperfections add to the piece, but show cars are meant to be dang near perfect. Paying show car prices for not show car quality is insane.
