To add to that I carry a fire extinguisher
It’s mounted inside, didn’t think of that as a tool as much as it’s a safety item.
I carry a gas can for bad days, I won’t confirm or deny having a lighter with me. LOL 😂
@@annoythedonkey 😂😂
@@VWJawbreaker in all seriousness are there tools to help with the cables. I was able to buy a special clamp for my Vespa that keeps the clutch adjustment perfect for when cables snap. Also how often should I proactively change cables?. I’d love to have the same thing or work with someone who could help me design one in cad.
@@annoythedonkey when you change the cables out, the clutch cable is the only pain. The pedal assembly has to come out.
I think the best thing you were talking about was being prepared to not only help yourself but to help others. Just shows your commitment to the community . Great video as always even the camera guy takes away great lessons. Cheers and thanks for sharing
Thanks Rob. I hope by other hearing it they’ll follow suit and do the same for others. All we can be is a good example for one another. My camera boy has learned a lot in these last few years and enjoys being apart of the community as well. I’m proud of that boy.
Have a great day and stay safe buddy.
Ha! You got those little orange-handled picks too.
Oh yeah, cheap tools at its finest!!
I bought a roll bag and love it for my beetle
I can’t believe how much abuse mine has taken and still looks like new.
Hope you enjoy yours!
@@VWJawbreaker I’m going to mark the pouches tho because that’s a great idea
Great video bro!! Definitely things everybody should carry in a VW. Always be prepared. ✌🏼
Thanks! I’m definitely over prepared but that’s besides the point 😂
Daniel Tremblay from Quebec Canada .A set of spare keys (Door & Ignition ) in a magnetic little box near the motor
.
That’s a great idea!
Thanks for chiming in with that!
I also carry a couple of cheap rubber wheel chocks from Harbor Freight n case I have to jack it up.
Smart idea!!
great video. i cant tell you how many times i have helped someone out because they didnt have tools. great job explaining this
We’ve all learned a lot over the years!
Wow you are definitely prepared. Saw a few things we need to add to Abbey, thanks for sharing.
Sad to think I removed a lot for this video lol
I’m always over prepared lol
I’ve driven VWs since the 80s. I had the factory tool kit, a fan belt, and a spare tire.
I didn’t know I needed all that. Lol.
Some people carry more than others. Since I tend to help people when we’re out cruising around, I tend to carry more than needed.
Nice setup! If you are real old and fat like me, the best two items are a cell phone and a credit card.
Check and check! Lol
That's a good point to fix whatever you need to fix on your Volkswagen with the tools you have on your car
I was wondering if anyone caught that!
Great Vid as usual Gary, I carry a pertronix coil, cos they are crap if you leave your key on, as I have found out the hard way
Oh yeah, good call on that one!
Good video! That bag looks very handy
Thank you buddy! It works really well and is much better than just a toolbox imo.
Good video Gary.. making a tool kit and parts kit now.
Some things apply to all VW’s and some are specific to your VW… do what works best for you.
@@VWJawbreaker Thanks Gary…. Test drive tow went well. Went straight on the freeway at 60mph. I almost called off the trip yesterday Went to get fuel and it wasn’t shifting right and hard to down shift…. Thought about it for awhile.. took off the shifter and plate.. it’s was gummed up and noticed the shift rod bushing was gone…. woooo hoo we fixed it today! First time doing that as well. Wasn’t hard. Just had to make a custom access panel on the front fiberglass.
I love that tool roll pouch thing. I'm gonna have to pick up one of those
Honestly it’s much nicer and holds way more than I anticipated! I’m thinking of getting another one for the smaller parts.
Goood information....applies to bus too
Any old VW for that matter!!
Awsome...love seeing what everyone carries..gotta up my game
Just carry what you think you’ll need. Good preventative maintenance and knowing your VW will determine what you carry and how much to carry. If I wasn’t always helping people I would carry much less!
Great info!!!!
Thanks dude!
Good video!
Much better than the once I did about 3 years ago lol
Hey Gary,
Kevin here from Australia.
Great video. I've just updated all my tool rools, everything into the one bag. I picked up an awesome bag at a second hand hippy shop.
Anyway tools. You need a 4x4 tow rope , duct-tape as well as the black tape. Also the large cable ties 400mm.
These being exta strong. And a tarp to work on.
Stay healthy man.
✌🏻 Peace
Good point my friend!
I did leave out the mat that I lay or sit on as well as the tow rope…. Oops lol
Stay safe buddy!
I run on the Ragged edge with Mellow Yellow. There is a couple quarts of oil and a tow strap in my trunk. Have fire extinguisher mounted under dashboard. I do have a spare throttle and clutch cable but they are not in the car. 10 mm + 13 mm regular and Phillips screwdriver. Mello has never let me down😃
Sounds like you have the basics covered buddy!
I know you’re good about keeping up with your bug…. Performing the maintenance and being proactive helps keep us off of the side of the road.
Great informative and valuable information, All in one video. 😃👍A must watch video 4 all VW enthusiasts! 🤪🤙 Awesome Job! 👏😄
Hey thanks man, I appreciate that! 👍😎
You can get a lot in the front of a VW have not started getting things around to carry in mine but we will get there
I’ve definitely packed a ton of stuff in a VW!
Thanks. Picking up my 2054 IDA next weekend and can use your expertise with these videos.
Hope the videos help you along at some point.
It’s in a ghia 64 body on 68 pan. It literally drove about 15-20 miles cruising on freeway then on light incline dragged like it had no meat, the after going on flat road it literally got hot n shut down. I cruised it to side of road waited about 10 min then it fired up n got to spot where I had trailer ready. So bringing it back to AZ getting it looked at so it’s dialed in. but like to do all maintenance myself. One guy mentioned checks valve covers, to vapor lock. When it did drive right it was fine. Wish I could share my pic/video to you in here. Maybe I’ll post to my silly channel.
Great video…better to be prepared than forced to push your bug home. You have it down
I’ve had to push a few times in the beginning…. You learn and adapt!
Hi Gary! Long time no talk to. I haven't had much time for videos. I've been caught up in my own circle of hell. Lol Great to finally see your videos again. It was a great one and it's amazing how many toold you can fit into one of those roll ups. I have two of them. Always a pleasure my friend. Stay cool! Jim
Hey Jim!
Sorry to hear about the circle of hell, hopefully things are looking up for you. Just remember with life’s ups comes the lows as well. Keep your head up buddy.
Yes sir I agree those rolls do hold a lot, I’ve really loved having it over the last 6-8 months. Sure has made life easier on my end anyway.
Have a great day my friend and stay safe!
That's a lot of stuff you got there, well-prepared. But no duck-tape or electric tape?
There’s electrical tape in the tool roll!
Didn't see any JB weld, duct tape, or liquid wrench but maybe thats in part two.
No part two but those are good ideas! Can’t be too prepared!
I like that tool roll, Gary, but looks like they’re sold out.😩 Hey, most people don’t have that much stuff in their garage! Lol👍
They’re good about restocking pretty quick and the quality is worth the wait imo.
Yeah, kinda overkill but there’s been reasons… sad thing is, I left a few things out 😂
When I get my bug back on the road again, I need to put together a box of tools and spare parts. That it self is going to be a project. 😕👍
It won’t be too bad, you’ll just have to make sure you don’t take everything in the garage.
@@VWJawbreaker
😄👍
points & condenser when the 30 months are up on the pertronix are up. What fuel pump do you use run a spare in-line that is passive wired and ready to go on a two pole toggle. Flip the switch when the fist one quits. You stay clean depending on where you put the switch you don't even need to get out of the car.
Any word on early type three rear bumper
Yep, plenty of points and condensers!
Good idea on the dual fuel pumps.
Haven’t heard yet what all he’s getting rid of for the type 3.
I'm just wiring up mine at the moment, I have a solenoid valve and pump in the front and a solenoid valve and pump on the reserve tank (2.5 ltrs) in the back. Run through 2 relays. So I now get settings (1,) off (2,) pump 1 & solenoid 1 on (3,) pump 2 & solenoid 2 on. When I turn the ignition off, both solenoids shut off. Good thing for a safety feature if your involved in an accident.
@@Paulman50 agreed, relays are great when wired in correctly.
I have a battery portable jumper, duct tape wheel bearing in my trunk
Good stuff there!
@@VWJawbreaker probably oil too just incase that green light shows a flicker of life lol
@@jeremyshearer I always carry oil with me! Hope everyone does for that matter.
Levi is developing some editing skills.
Man, what an asset he’s becoming…. Guess I can’t always call him a dependent now 😂
Very prepared, as crazy as it sounds I always carry duct tape.must be the plumber in me.very useful video
Thank you sir. We can’t be too prepared regardless of what classic vehicle we’re driving around.
Hey bro what about the impact wrench With extra battery 3/8 drive it’s really good to have I carry one with me all the time save my hands knuckles specially good for that boat and not that don’t want to give up did you bring out that impact wrench on the side of the road and lose that baby up and you’re on your way be aloha from Hawaii
That’s a good idea as well as long as the batteries stay charged.
I try to keep things as simple as possible to help most people get themselves out of a pinch. Of course we can go overboard and pack too much but there’s nothing wrong with being prepared!
Hey bro yeah I get what you’re trying to say when we travel here in Hawaii on the big island there’s not much in between service stations etc. are quite distance between each other so I agree with what you say however I would like to add that we do have a weight limit and we try to keep it under let’s say 50 pounds or less at that point that might be excessive weight however it’s all determined on the distance and everything in between I appreciate your thoughts we love those lVolkswagens here in Hawaii Mahalo thank you for all you do
That’s smart to keep the weight down as much as possible. Of course on the longer trips it’s better to be more prepared or have people in the group carry different items so everyone can help each other out if needed.
Appreciate you and the comments!!
The distributor clamp i have the empi ones that is thicker with the degree on too have on the extra distrutor. My setup is basically like yours if it doesnt fitvin a 50cal ammo can its not usefull. My extras is the mini jumpstarter box jerrycan rope fire extinguisher (small and big) tri angle's too place in the front and rearof car.
Great idea with the rope!
I do carry a tow strap but forgot to mention it because I forgot it’s there lol
Fire extinguisher for sure but I classify that as safety and not really a tool 🤷♂️
@@VWJawbreaker the rope is extra. I have rigging straps for towing. Extra safety is always needed. Forgot too say a small bottle of brake fluid is always in the spare wheel well.
@@pierreduplessis1507 you’re right.
I did leave out a few things on purpose like brake fluid, small thing of grease and brake clean. Figured cover the basics and not go overboard lol
@@VWJawbreaker i agree. Ammo can fits under rear passanger seat with jumper cables. Got a 3ply sheet of wood under the rear seat ive made a small shelf for small things.
Must admit all I carry is a tow rope. But when I finish the wiring I'm cruising off to see a mate 500klm round trip, so may take more.
I have seen people take a spear distributer with the locking plate still on and pre timed.
I use to have a distributor with the clamp installed and timed for my engine but that went to help someone else and haven’t set it up again for mine yet.
Anytime I take a long road trip, all of these parts and then sometimes a few extra end up going with me. My luck is I’ll need it if I don’t bring it lol
Think a spare fly wheel would be good too keep?
Wouldn’t hurt but I wouldn’t carry one with me. That’s a lot of work to do on the side of the road.
Please post the link for those tool bags.
It’s down in the video description 🤙
I find it easier to just carry my AAA card than to lug all that around.
Whatever works best for you 👍
What happened to the paint
That’s the character of the car.
second!!
Thanks!!
