- Today I'm telling you all my best tips and the things I wish I knew before starting an Etsy store. I'll walk you through how to start your Etsy shop and how to make your first sale! It is possible to start a business in college with Etsy, and today I'm showing you how I did it.

I made my first sale, but I’m so afraid the person won’t like it. I also can’t figure out how to get the money transferred to my bank account and I can’t figure out how to add the tracking number to the order.
What is your store called? I'd love to give it a look! I'm sure they will love it! It's always tough at the beginning, but things will only get better and easier with time. Under your Shop Manager, there is a tab called 'Finances'. From there, choose 'Payment Account' to access your fees and payments. With your first sale, you will probably have to set up what account Etsy will payout to. Then, you can choose how often your payments will be transferred. When you purchase shipping labels, there should be a tracking # on the confirmation page somewhere. Etsy might send it already in the shipping confirmation to the customer, or you can add it in the 'Note to Customer' box when you mark the order as shipped/completed. Hope that helps!

Hi, Jayne! I so relate to this. I am a perfectionist (at least to my own standard of what I'd like) and I felt the same way starting out. In my experience, it's much easier to learn / improve / perfect my store once I actually started it! You can do tons of research and prep, but the best way to learn is by doing it! I started my Etsy shop last night. I only posted one listing just as a test run. This weekend I have more supplies coming in so I can post more. Hand made beaded bracelets w/ matching earrings, Charm bracelets w/ matching earrings and lip gloss ( different colors & scents)

@@lolaishotasf depop shipping is quite expensive so if you want cheap shipping you can go on vinted and sell on there is charges the customers for shipping but the shipping is really cheap anyway * £2.80 for small parcels or like £1 something* while depop is $4

You ship products the same way you would purchase a shipping label online, or the same way the post office creates labels for packages. When a customer places an order, you simply fill out the item's correct size and weight and select your mailing class. Then, Etsy creates the proper label for you with the customer's mailing address and proper postage, so all you have to do then is print the label, pack the item, and ship it! I just started an Etsy store! It’s so fun creating these things but (like a lot of the comments are saying) making this first sale is so hard and I feel like I have to underprice my products just to get sales going (since I have 0 right now which probably means 0 credibility😕) I’ve created a Facebook page, Instagram, even advertised it on my personal social media!!
How do you print the labels to mail to each customer?
Etsy provides the labels for each order, then you can print them however you choose!

Nope, they provide each label as a pdf and you can print it directly from that page.

How much sales would you expect in the first year?
Hi April! This really depends and it is very hard to estimate before you begin. It all depends on how many products you have available and how your sales compare to your traffic. I recently re-opened my store and have only been open a few months. But, I've already made more sales in my first 2 months than I did with my previous store over a year and a half. Wish I could help more! The traffic and sales take time to build & grow. It's part of the risk of starting a business! But you never know what could happen :)

Titles and tags are difficult. I’m in conflict with Erank and Etsy to be honest because Erank tell me not to have long titles, whereas artists on Etsy are using many different descriptive words in their titles......

How do you calculate for shipping and handling when customers order multiple things from your shop?
I honestly struggled with this as well. I used the option to set an add on fee instead of a doubling shipping for the customer for multiple items, because it only costed me the additional weight of the second item. This would depend on the weight & size of your products.

You were the perfect person I needed to help motivate me and give me the little boost I needed. I have procrastinated for the longest about opening an Estey and I'm really gonna do it this time, whether I fail or not. You never know until you try, right? I've never had much confidence about stuff like this but you said everything I needed to hear and you put me at ease. I overthink everything and worry about everything girl. But... it's a new year and I'm really trying to venture out of my comfort zone and at least try. I do work hard but I want to be happy, just like anyone else. Hope you understand what I'm trying to say and hope you can feel my heart. I've always loved photography and I mostly do freelance and most for free for family and friends. I love knowing I can take engagement, wedding photos etc...and give it as a gift and make them happy and that makes me happy . Sorry this is so long and I do apologize...

I do it naturally and don't realize when I'm doing it! So thank you for saying this - I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I would say you have a great shot still! Social media is great because you can always build it up if you want to. If your business works more in person, I wouldn't worry about it! But if you are looking to expand online, using social media will definitely help.

I'm just confused about setting shipping prices and printing labels
I talked more about this in my newer Etsy videos :) I have a whole playlist if you'd like more info! Etsy makes shipping and printing labels super easy. You need to weigh and measure your packages (you can buy a scale at home, I got a cheap food scale because my items are light) to configure your shipping costs through Etsy. Once you enter the size and weight of the package, Etsy calculates the prices for you. Then, you choose which mailing service you'd like to use, purchase the label through Etsy, and Etsy provides the label you can print at home.

I print directly with printer paper, cut out the labels, and tape them onto the package!

I've always wanted to have an Etsy store, but I'll likely never open one because I don't know what I want to sell, and every video focuses on every problem that comes after that decision. I wish at least one person would help people figure out what to consider selling.
I'm sorry to hear that, Connie! I think it's probably because the 'product' or 'idea' is what usually leads people to want to open a store. When I'm trying to figure out what type of product I'd like to sell, I spend a lot of time thinking about what interests me, what my skills are, etc. On Etsy, I pay attention to what type of products attract me and why. Then thinking about "could I do this? How? What are these stores doing well? What niche is missing? What could I offer that these stores/products aren't?" and similar questions help narrow down my vision. Hope that helps!
