Throughout the song the black dog is a metaphor for her depression. The starting line is a band matty healy covered at one of his concerts shortly after their breakup. She describes herself and this relationship as an ‘old habit’ which correlates to their relationship in 2014. Additionally, she describes missing the smoke, Matty healy is an avid smoker. I could be wrong through it’s all speculation 😊

So let’s hope this track is from rep and hopefully she will finally share it with us in the re-recorded album. Just like how she finally shared her and matty’s love story with us.

This is about Matty Healy. The Starting Line is the group they bonded over. And to whoever said the Black Dog isn’t a real place- yes it is very real!
The black dog is indeed a metaphore, for depression, but this song is mainly about Matty. They have a long history and he performed in the Black Dog BAR in Cork on 13th June 2023 , the London one is a pub. The Black Dog was recorded on 22nd of June, when she wore black biker shorts and the Eagles jumper. Matty also has/had a black cane corso called Mayhem.
