    Oh my gosh Hannah yesss. Preach about fantasy self! I feel that so much and have actually talked to people in my circle about that.
    I think that the secret to investing in your fantasy self is what I call “the test”. Your experience with rent the runway was “the test” that confirmed that you could invest in your fantasy self. When My fantasy self wanted to be a runner. I ran with what I had for two weeks and then bought good shoes. Then two weeks after that bought two new running outfits. Then after 3 months of running I finally started really investing in running gear.
    I think we screw over our fantasy selves when we buy 14 skeins of yarn to crochet a blanket when we’ve never even made as much as a scarf or beanie. That’s when we start second guessing if our fantasy self is even worth investing in. She/he IS worth investing in! It’s just putting concepts to “the test” before buying buying buying...
    Okay now I’m off my soapbox. Thanks for your message as always HLP.

    Hi, Hannah, I really love your channel! I watch pretty much every video of yours because I enjoy the way you talk about makeup and other topics and the reflections and insights you have.
    I watched your PR video back in July so I understand your perspective that receiving PR hasn't affected your budget that much since you often receive things that you wouldn't have ever bought yourself, and I do believe you when you say that you wouldn't have bought those items. From an outside perspective, though, it seems like a lot of your PR sparks joy for you - the Persona palette, the Alter Ego Daydream and Sahara palettes, the Lancome blush etc. - and those sparks of joy have perhaps abated a need to buy shiny new things. Maybe you wouldn't have bought those items specifically, but you probably would have wanted to buy other items in their place. Since you didn't have to spend any of your budget on shiny new items, you could afford to buy the Ulla Johnson blouse.
    You also received a number of staple products that you would have had to spend your budget on this month, like the Timeless vitamin C serum, the Fleur and Bee cream (I assume you would have bought an equivalent night cream, not this one specifically), the eyebrow pencil, and the Clionadh singles (these would have come out of your August budget which would have affected how much leftover money you would have had for September).
    I guess it's just hard for me to reconcile your statement that you're buying fewer, nicer things at the cost of your own comfort and self-soothing habits (such as buying cheaper items, like drugstore lipsticks and easier-to-wear shirts) (28:58 - 29:44) when you're acquiring PR that fulfills that comfort and those self-soothing habits.
    Do you think that you enjoy acquiring shiny new items, and if so, do you think that receiving PR fulfills that role and allows you to spend your budget on something big? Would you have been willing to give up all the PR you've received that made it possible for you to save your budget this month to get the Ulla Johnson blouse? Both the staple PR products and the products that fulfill your joy in having shiny new items.
    I think a lot of people would be interested in seeing you carry out your beauty budget while not receiving any PR or subscriber gifts (which I know you recently mentioned you stopped accepting).
    By the way, I'm not necessarily expecting a written response to this comment - I understand that it would probably be quite long. I do think this topic would be interesting to discuss in a video in a few months.

    • @pixi78
      @pixi78 5 лет назад +14

      Great comment! I’d love to hear Hannah discuss this in a video. I agree that it is possible that because Hannah is receiving things she loves in PR they function as “self soothing” items and I’m interested to know if Hannah would feel like she had holes in her collection without them? What PR did Hannah receive this month and what would it have cost if she’d bought it? It’s all very “sliding doors” interesting to think about. Hannah is lucky to receive PR but it sure does change the psychology of purchasing etc.

    I have been thoroughly enjoying replacing regular pieces with very statement/editorial workday clothes. I have purchased quite a few items I would have thought were "too much" for me before, but now I LOVE a piece that gets people talking in a good way. I agree that pieces that are less fitted and can be worn through the thick and thin of life are the one's worth keeping!

    I love your channel and I love the concept of one nice thing. I’m a foster mom with 6 kids and so often I’ll either a) spend no money on myself for any reason or b) buy lots of things in a row to say I “deserve”. I am hoping to get a budget similar to yours and be so much more purposeful and grateful.

    I have also chosen the “fewer nicer things” route for my clothes. I used to buy fast fashion, but I found once I started wearing higher quality pieces, i lost my appetite for it. I have been lucky and bought things on sale. I’ve never shopped second hand, I think it’s sth I need to get into.

    • @Creamy_Goodness
      @Creamy_Goodness 5 лет назад +2

      I mean I buy 90% of what I wear uniqlo, and try to maintain the clothes well overall. I agree with "fewer" but definitely disagree nicer = more expensive. You don't need fancy brands to have pieces that work IMO.

    Us who make clothes are so particular about what we buy. Because we typically don't make much money, but we also know how things are made and how much they cost. 😊 I love your choice of blouse and how you came to the decision! I also love buying second-hand, you get to see what really holds up over time. An educational experience. 💖

    So this is adjacent to the video but I wanted to talk about it. I've been budgeting my personal sewing but I have a school assignment in which I can incorporate sewing a historically accurate outfit using original techniques. Unfortunately, after I budgeted it out, the entire outfit was going to cost me $300, since I needed 18 yards of various fabrics, upwards of 40 buttons, 6 different spools of thread, etc. However, I am applying for a research/creative grant and presenting the finished product at an undergraduate research conference! Wish me luck!

    Hannah, I really enjoyed hearing you speak on well-made garments. I struggle with purchasing well made clothing that lasts a long time and I’d like to learn more about it. Practically speaking, I work at home most of the time and I rarely go into work. When I do, I go to a group of staples (jeans, a blazer, a shell to wear underneath) and I’ve been trying to make that “work capsule” a collection of non-trendy beautiful things that can last a long time. Do you have any suggestions or resources for learning more about what to look for in a well-made garment?

    There are monthly subscription services like Stitch Fix available that allow you to "rent" clothing with an option to buy. For working women, anyone who cannot physically go out & shop or hates doing it, or anyone who likes to switch up their closet regularly or wants to try different brands/labels, might be a good option. I like the idea of second hand shopping & 20-25 years ago it was easy to find good used bookstores & consignment shops/thriftstores locally. I used to sell my clothes on consignment pretty frequently in fact. But nowadays it's very time consuming to find anything at a brick & mortar thriftstore because online sellers will pretty much buy everything that isn't junk to sell on ebay & Poshmark. The only consignment store near me will only take Designer Label goods which is unfortunate.
    I'm glad the blouse brought you so much joy. It's a gorgeous color & a quality piece that is well made. It's also a style that you can pull off & obviously love. I will say however that I was always taught that the investment vs wear formula dictated investing the most money in the clothes worn most often like foundation garments, shoes, coat, & whatever makes up your basics since those items are being worn & washed repeatedly. People who live in jeans & tees will balk at paying higher prices for these items which doesn't make sense to me(unless it is a budget constraint) I would think you would want to look & feel good everyday, not just on "special" occassions. This is where the fantasy self vs real self struggle begins I think. It's ok to want to look our best for ourselves even if we're just going to the grocery store or dropping the kids at school or going out for coffee. Give yourself permission to indulge your fantasy self's vanity. 😉

However, I also know if I show my mom this, she could make something inspired by it. My mom is an amazing seamstress. She has made all my grad dresses, and a bunch of other dresses for my daily life. There is something about something being made exactly for your measurements.

    Hello a new but enthusiastic subscriber even introduced my husband to your channel ( trying to get him on my support “smaller” channel wave. ) I was wondering if you could put subtitles or more concise summaries in your videos? I’m am disabled and have audio processing problems and it’s something hard to follow you since you are a elaborate sort of speaker ( I apologize if this seems like a backhand or boaderline sexist remark, attracted to your channel because our likeness to passionately ramble and philosophize. Just had a hard time keeping up and value what you have to say.
    I understand making things accessible in this way might be a laborious task but I hope you could understand because the auto generated isn’t always reliable.

    Home chef and all services like it bother me on such a visceral level. If you own a refrigerator, freezer and have a dry goods cupboard there is no reason to throw away money in this way. Admittedly I have an advantage being a Chef but shopping and meal prep are not that difficult or time consuming especially with the types of plates these services offer. This will be the subject of a video in the future I promise you can make way better food for less money and not much more effort.

      @Marie N People like myself with crippling nerve and migraine pain. These services are not aimed at those people as trust me our income does not begin to support this kind of waste. The Target if these services are University students and millennial Adults without the skills do do differently as evidenced by their local job posting in my city for a director of marketing.

      @Marie N They specifically asked for a person aged 18-25 so they could relate to the target market it's not hard to see what they are doing. A better option for you would be to bulk buy and spend one Sunday a month preparing sides and mains that can be easily frozen and then heated. You will save yourself stress and money.

      @Marie N I took huge amounts of medications when I was working to help with the pain but ultimately had to give up running a kitchen because of it. That said if I could run a hotel kitchen in that much pain anyone can spend one day a month prepping for themselves. I promise you can make anything these services offer in your own kitchen for less and if you have questions on how to do something ask ❤️

      I feel like this comment is akin to “I have the advantage of being a contractor, but if you have a saw, nails, and a hammer I don’t understand why you wouldn’t just go to the store get lumber and make a dining room table?!?”. I am also a chef and I understand where your thought process is, but if people choose to spend a little more on such a service good for them. I depend on people not cooking at home for part of my monthly income. It could be argued that eating out is “throwing away money.” Home chef is just an alternative to people who would usually eat out. I can think of a million reasons why Home Chef is a totally valid and good service, the least of which is that there is simply a demand for it. I would even consider ordering it myself it could be delivered it my area.
