    Kevin is the relatable character in the show that represents the Asian community who wants to take a peak into that wealthy lifestyle :)

    Definitely agree with the point that without having a "normal" person like Kevin, the show probably would've been a lot less appealing to most people, myself included. And I loved his point about people who hate on the show looking so hard for what makes everyone different from the people on the show rather than what makes us similar - seems like a great commentary on society in general that we focus so much on our differences and not what can help us come together. Like Kevin said, I'm an African-American and not one bit Asian nor rich, and I loved the show and could find parts I related to. Great episode of Lunch Break!

    I definitely was attracted to the show because Kevin was in it. But I stayed for the social interactions that happened and the conversations that came out of them. For ex. Kevin and Kim's discussions about finding their bio parents or showing Kelly's relationship going through therapy. That made it feel more real, than just a reality tv. It felt like you were really getting to know the people. I never got the stigma where I would feel people would think this is what all Asians are like. I'd hope people are brighter than that. All ethnicities may have similarities but, we all have our own cultures and traditions. We are all multi-dimensional and do not fall just under one category.

    Kevin saying, “OmG I get to keep the shoes!” Super genuine and super funny, but does he really ride a skateboard just to Anna’s.
    The hypnotherapy session was really powerful, just losing it on the couch and expressing the sense of feeling what his mom felt as she was about to give birth. I don’t think I have ever seen anything that personal and so hard to keep tears from coming out.
    Amazing series, in a different sense. I bet KK would be popular in Korea and Japan after this.

    I don't like how this conversation perpetuates the concept of the "friend zone". Just because someone is interested in and kind to someone else doesn't make that person obligated to reciprocate romantic feelings. Kevin isn't entitled to Kelly just because he's "nicer" than Drew. This being a conversation between 4 men doesn't help.
    That said, Drew is so toxic and Kelly's friends need to help her stay away from him WITHOUT judgment. She keeps being drawn back into this abusive and toxic relationship and then becoming increasingly secretive about it because she's embarrassed which isolates her and pushes her further into this abusive guy's arms!!!!

    • @monaw3805
      @monaw3805 3 года назад +27

      I agree. Kelly was not interested in Kevin and their first date was very uncomfortable to watch with him trying to kiss her. Very disappointed in Wongfu for not recognizing that. This is why I miss Christine. She always gave the best female perspective.

    • @randomperson8571
      @randomperson8571 3 года назад +10

      Agree with everything but I am disappointed in Kelly for outright lying to her friends and then calling it "avoiding the question" :/ I get that she might feel judged by them but they want to help her. Her friends need to try not to come off as judgmental and she needs to open up to them more and trust them more (its awkward because both things need to happen at the same time which is not realistic maybe? Lol)
      To Kevins credit I believe his final thought on the issue was that he needed to get over her? So at least he recognizes shes maybe not for him and backing off. We shall see how that goes.

    I come from a low income background and struggled throughout my youth as an asian american. However, I really enjoyed Bling Empire. I actually loved it. I have seen reality TV that is so much more crazier than this so when people say that this show is "trashy" or dramatic, I think sooo differently LOL. I think I personally judged rich asians but this show helped me to empathize and see their hardships. I think if they show some parts of their life, I would just appreciate them sharing their private moments.

    • @Wazupimanntaylor
      @Wazupimanntaylor 3 года назад +2

      Yes! Each person had a personal struggle that really humanized them. I really loved all the small touches of asian culture, norms, and traditional values. I also came from a low income background so the talk about money is a big topic because money clearly comes with many benefits so I appreciated how open they were to admit how rich everyone was and how money lets them have their current lifestyle.

    I know I have made this comment before on wongfu's content and other content from East Asian folks. I never really hear you all touch on this but because representation is lacking for our Asian American communities, it is dominated by East Asian experiences while growing up Cambodian American is vastly different especially on parental expectations and career choices. I would like to add Pacific Islander experiences are also lacking and not as known on platforms with a national presence. My theory is that there are more East Asians in America; therefore, the odds of an Asian person being presented on TV is likely to be East Asian or their skin complexion appears to be East Asian. A lot of my people around me are carmel to brown skin complexion so that is something that is also not talked about on Wongfu is colorism within our communities. I know at this point I am ranting but I have been watching and supporting wongfu since RUclips came out and felt inspired on how you all have been telling stories from a genuine place. This is why I have continued to watch your content. Maybe one day you will have a darker skin Asian person on one of your series or movies.

    i just think the whole premise is ironic as an adoptee because some asians who live in asia assume that me being adopted means i became not just well off, but wealthy and thats just not true. a lot of adoptees have living birth parents but are only abandoned because of poverty, thats true, but that doesnt mean that being adopted into a white family will necessarily make your life better. the irony is that i meet rich asian international students who come here for college just for the experience and im in a minimum wage job while studying making 9.25 an hour and still 20,000 in debt. and then they still have the audacity to tell me i got it lucky because i "live in the land of opportunity" with white parents....like ok....

    I enjoyed it. Aside from the obnoxious wealth (which in itself is fascinating to see how the "other half" lives), I thought Bling Empire told a good amount of human stories that I want to hear more of (season 2?). I don't feel like there's a new stereotype following Crazy Rich Asians and Bling Empire (unless there's been a flood of new characters like the ones featured in these). Though in saying all that, it would be nice to see more "normal" / relatable stories in future shows or films~

    Ok, I get that the Asian community feels misrepresented with shows like Bling Empire and they want to have a choice in what they want to watch, but Bling Empire also is also helping the Asian community to get one more step in that direction, I hope. And even as a non-Asian there were so many moments in the show that I could relate to, like toxic boyfriends, father-situations, etc. Thanks for this episode, it was very fun to watch ^^

    • @conniesbeenhereXD
      @conniesbeenhereXD 3 года назад +5

      I completely agree with your statement and I understand your comment comes from a place of empathy but I think the delivery is a little misguided. You enter problematic territory when you start offering passes and making excuses for things that offend Asian people. This can be a problem because as a non-Asian you are diminishing the concerns of Asians who DO feel misrepresented.
      I am an Asian person, so when I say what you said, it adds to the conversation, whereas I think it's important to note that someone like you saying the same thing does not translate the same way. Inherently, you do not belong to the group (Asians), and speaking on their behalf to say "I get that Asians are offended but they should get over it because these are baby steps in the right direction." In the future, it might be valuable to think about the angle from which you view the situation and where you belong in that dynamic before speaking on their behalf.
      Hopefully, I didn't come off too condescending. I think it's important to fix micro-level issues and adjusting our language and knowing whether we should speak on an issue is an important part of progressing to a more empathetic, inclusive society.

      @@conniesbeenhereXD Hi Connie! Thanks for taking the time and explaining this to me, I appreciate that a lot!!
      My intention was by no means to diminish the concerns of Asians who feel misrepresented, or make excuses. I'm sorry if it came off or made you feel that way.

    I feel like we need to move past (being latinx myself) that diversity is just black and Hispanic, not true. This continues to leave many minority groups out of the conversation, not just by race, but even sexuality. Take for instance with the xenophobic hate crimes against Asian communities, many of the comments I am even seeing is from many black people saying well Asian people were racist too me or Hispanic saying the same, and its like recognize that sure, but also also give your Asian brothers and sisters the the space and recognize its not about you, because even thinking about it native, indigenous people are also left out the conversation. So just like you would want people to be support of your fight for justice and equality, do the same. I loved watching this

    I think people forgot that Fresh Off the Boat had 6 seasons. Correct me if I'm wrong (I only watched a couple of epi), they were middle-class Asians. So, I'm pretty sure a lot of Asians wouldn't think most Asians are rich based off one tv show. Plus, as they mentioned, there is a movie that represents the poor population. So, there is a well-rounded representation in my opinion.

      From what I remember, they mentioned that that they have to use 2 equipment due to lag. One for zoom/chat and one for recording. So what you're seeing is a mic/earphone for zoom/chat and another for the recording.

      @@dral31gh thank you so much this was really helpful. Kevin’s portrayed as the dumb one in the show so I’m so embarrassed to have thought he didn’t know what he’s doing

      They’re using zoom to talk to eachother, so that’s one headset but most webcams are terrible quality. Separately he is probably recording himself with a proper camera but listening there to make sure the audio is synced and actually recording good

    I love WongFu, I think the content is great but I find the timing/pace of their shows are a tad slow.

    I knew of Jamie Xie from her RUclips videos. I used to wonder why she needs all that stuff that she buys but now I understand what her actual life is like. These people live on another plain of existence.

    I understand what he's saying, and the nuance that you'll get if you actually watch the show. But I'm mostly worried about the majority of the universe, which will be non-Asian people who know of the show but have not watched it. Just still apprehensive about the social effects of this, not a criticism of the producers or cast, but I think this anxiety over it is just even more indication that we are miles behind in representation.

    Felt Phil’s energy “bling empire is garbage tv” & the “I could’ve done better vibe”. But ya didn’t get anything out on Netflix Phil. Kevin is a cool sexy guy and the wong fu cast are nerdy. They have absolutely nothing in common so I don’t see that they would see the value of this reality tv show. Kevin did an excellent job in this interview!

    I remained in a constant state of second hand embarrassment whenever Kevin was on the screen.. you can’t hate your way into a relationship. Stop speaking on Andrew you look crazy. You shouldn’t have to put the next man down to boost yourself up.. he might’ve actually had a chance if he didn’t keep andrews name in his mouth.

    Kevin and Anna were the best part of the show. Kim and Kane are vile and the rest are somewhere in the middle. Kevin seemed self aware and mature while Kim looked to be am immature gossipping person who makes questionable decisions and thinks everyone's responsible but her own self.

    I didn't enjoy bling empire, but i understand that trashy reality shows can be just a chill watch for people. As an asian, I just didn't relate to the people in the show and I don't feel represented by it.

    I like Kevin but when he talks notice his eyes show very little expression on them for example....look at two of the other guys when they laugh or talk their eyes laugh or smile too but Kevin and the guy with the glasses eyes just sit there with a blank expression.....Kevins voice is reactive and his mouth smiles a little but his eyes are expressionless.....I can see why American producers dont cast many asians in movies etc and I know they cant help it but Kevin your face looks almost like a mask that you wear...........the eyes are the windows to the heart but if the eyes are locked open then you can never feel whats in the heart....sorry Kevin but I think this series may be your only career path........and you are not really very definded as a muscular man either....maybe you think so but your abs leave a lot to be desired compared to many other actors on screen today........
