The trailer makes this look like it's going to be a feel-good period piece where the meanies grow a golden heart in the end. It's a much more substantial story and the film epitomizes CONFIDENT directing and dedicated performances. Splendid cast delivers in spades. i saw this two hours ago and I'm still in a mood. Astonishing storytelling, now I want to read the book.
The beach scene with Emily & Bill is, quite simply, one of the most beautiful, tender romantic scenes I've ever seen on screen. So underplayed & yet so profound. The memory will always stay with me.....
Folks, I respectfully have to suggest getting out more. My local community cinema shows at least 10 intelligent films, involving brain engagement, every month! I appreciate that not everyone can visit such a cinema, but there are significantly more films being made now for discerning (and older) audiences than 10, 20 or 30 years ago.
To me, it wasn't "lovely," it was depressing. Most of the people in the community were unsupportive of her bookstore, and many were downright nasty to her. The performances of the actors, however, were great.
Deb Terry It looks appealing, but I thought it's very much the sort of role we're used to seeing him in, after 'Their Finest', etc. Nothing wrong with that, though, and perhaps you've seen him in very different roles.
@@l.a.3479 Dear I.a. 👍👌👏 Thanks a lot for telling me this. I definitely don't need sad and depressing movies. Nowadays it's more than sad and depressing enough. I'm sad and depressed myself. I wonder why dramas and similar stuff is filmed anyway? I want, love and need happy endings. Best regards, luck and health in particular.
Now that bookshops are slowly dying... Maintenant que les librairies meurent lentement... Nou dat die boekwinkels stadig besig is om te sterf... Nu dat de boekwinkels langzaam sterven... Ngoku iincwadi zokubhuka ziyafa ngokukhawuleza...
Interesting concept and story line with one hell of a good cast. I'm sure it's a great film. Here's to success of what seems a quiet, yet profound movie.
I really liked it! At first I thought it was going to be an insipid film at how great it is to be quirky, bookish and innately British. Wrong. It's a story about the lengths of people's odiousness and manipulation to drag you down on your feet and isolate you till you can no longer defend yourself. This trailer itself is very misleading!
Oh, Bill Nighy. They say this about Gene Hackman, that he's an actor who, no matter how sketchy the movie may be, never puts out any less than quality acting. Not that this movie is bad in any way, but Nighy is one of those actors who never puts out even a mildly disappointing bit of acting.
Can anyone tell me what everyone's problem with the main character is? After watching the film I couldn't figure it out. It doesn't seem it's the book shop that they have a problem with so much as the woman herself
JMO: I agree. Most of the community's rich and powerful don't like her--she's an outsider who stands up for herself and won't be bullied by them. When Lady Violet, who's used to getting her way, first meets the main character, she suggests a different property for the bookstore, but is declined. She cares more about having the main character's property than about anything or anyone else.
I hope the powers the old money had, have finished. That's what this is about, the old stuffy UK that persisted from old bygone days thru to the 1950s at least
"I like books, but that's just me, you wouldn't understand because you hate books." "Grr, fucking books, filling people's heads with ideas, destroy her bookstore."
But it is also about gorgeous shots of cake! Oh and also period dresses and lovely nostalgia for old timey days. For people who will grumble about immigrants and buy their books from amazon.
Are you that literal-minded, Mr White? For me, the bookshop itself is inconsequential. What does matter in this story, is the fact that she harbors in her heart a DREAM; the film follows the trajectory of her faith in, and pursuit of, the fulfillment of said dream. The bookshop is a metaphor for ANY dream one may have and which others will, for fear-based reasons, try their best to crush. "You make me believe once more in things...." he says to her. When was the last time you met someone who re-kindled your belief in something you abandoned?
I think he vaguely resembles an actor who was convicted for such reasons a few years ago. Needless to say, it's wise to get your facts rights before making accusations that could prompt legal action! Judging from the baffling number of thumbs ups, it looks like others are making the same mistake.
oh,i see.I thought it was strange if this had happened about Bill Nighy and i'd somehow missed it.Yes,people are quick indeed to lynch people without making certain what the truth is,or about whom they're even speaking.Troubling.Thanks for your reply!
Waaay too much silly melodrama about a bookshop. The writer really couldn't come up with a better plot than a good, young, attractive woman wants to open a bookshop and an old, evil, bitter woman wants to shut it down? Good Lord. And it's not even very well written. "Where there's life, there's hope." "God, what a horrifying thought." Which no doubt will get a laugh, and was meant to get a laugh, but why? What's horrifying about "where there's hope, there's life"? Is life a bad thing? Is hope a bad thing? Is it funny just because Nighy plays a sour old man and he said something sour, even if it doesn't make any sense? Should we be bothered that Mortimer's line is irrelevant and that it could be replaced with any positive aphorism? How about... "It's always darkest before the storm." "God, what a horrifying thought." Or... "Success is falling down nine times and getting up ten." "God, what a horrifying thought." The rest of the trailer is the same: not an interesting line of dialog anywhere. Just characters saying perfunctory things that people should say in a silly melodrama about a bookshop.
Dear God, please bring us the next season of GoT and The Walking Dead, lest I join the vast undead armies depicted in both works of prophetic storytelling. Save me, o lord, from thy chick flicks and period dramas ;)
It's definitely a period drama but it's very far from a chick flick. It's about people going the extra mile to make you miserable. GoT and TWD both have some very silly storytelling themselves.
The trailer makes this look like it's going to be a feel-good period piece where the meanies grow a golden heart in the end. I hope they didn't change the ending
Oh dear. The screenplay was abysmal!
To me, the movie was depressing. However, the casting and acting was top-level.
You should definitely read the book! It’s excellent.
The beach scene with Emily & Bill is, quite simply, one of the most beautiful, tender romantic scenes I've ever seen on screen. So underplayed & yet so profound. The memory will always stay with me.....
Such a poignant, profound moment for both of them ... loved the tenderness in the way he kisses her hand and she rests her head against his.
@@Scrappy527 - yes, it is just so beautiful. It brought tears to my eyes....
I wasn't breathing during that whole scene. The movie was fine, but that scene was breathtaking.

One of the few peaceful and happy scenes in the entire movie.
You’re never alone when you’re in a bookshop 💙
A profoundly beautiful statement! I completely agree!
How nice, a well acted and intelligent movie. Why can't we have more like this!??
Yes, why can't we?
Because they cater for the brainless morons in society and they don't watch films where you have to use your brain xx

The movie is simply lovely.A scene between Bill Nighy and Emily Mortimer is under played and delightful.
To me, it wasn't "lovely," it was depressing. Most of the people in the community were unsupportive of her bookstore, and many were downright nasty to her. The performances of the actors, however, were great.
Great to see Emily Mortimer in another fantastic role. She was brilliant in The Newsroom with Jeff Daniels..
Bill Nighy is brilliant.
Two of my favourite actors, working together, lovely.
This is a fantastic trailer. I would love to see this.
A movie for the book lovers ♥️
What a refreshing different role to see Bill Nighy in ... SO looking forward to this.. Hugs! Deb

Academy Award winning movie that will be seen by dozens of people worldwide.

At last a decent film with substance. Saw the The Guernsey potato peel pie society film it was fantastic.
thanks Kate,i was wondering about whether i should see that :)
It's fine as long as you don't see it hoping to see Guernsey locations, as sadly not a single scene was filmed there!

well, i found The Guernsey potato peel pie society on my boxxy software and wanna see it asap with subtitle. does this movie deserve my attention?

Wonderful, can't wait to visit Wigton
Cannot wait till this comes to Berlin. Been waiting for ages for so much as a trailer and am glad to finally see one! Thank you for posting.

A great movie. Unusual and I didn't like the end - I'd hoped for a happier ending! Loved it, would see it again.
Great cast and performances, but not a "great movie," IMO. It was sad and depressing to me how she was mistreated by almost everyone in the community.
So sublime!
This looks great and OMG, what a cast!
The cast and performances are amazing; however, the movie itself is sad and depressing, IMO.

Money would have been better spent on making a film version of The Charles Paris Mysteries even if they do rely a lot on Radio 4 in jokes.
Am I the only one who is sick of these trailers playing the WHOLE movie in miniature?
This trailer is an exception. It doesn't really tell what happens.
If I had a choice between watching this movie and being dipped in a vat of boiling oil, I would choose the latter.
What an uninspired font for on-screen copy.
Bill Nighy, one of the best British actors . .but the question is . .where there any books sexually abused during the making of this film ?
And were any hapless flies flattened by the abrupt closing of said books?
