- Your guide to setup Battle for Middle Earth 1 & 2 and how to get it up and running on Steam Deck!
BE SURE TO READ THE DESCRIPTION
All you have to do is follow these steps:
1. Download and install Bottles using SteamOS Discover software center.
2. Open Bottles and create a bottle (choose gaming environment while creating).
3. Download All in One launcher - www.moddb.com/mods/battle-for-middle-earth-patch-222/downloads/patch-222
4. Open your bottle and click "Run executable", then point to the location of the .exe file.
5. Install the launcher.
6. In your bottle, scroll down to the Options section, choose Dependencies and install d3dx11.
7. Add the launcher to steam library and set Proton to 8.0
8. Run the launcher again and install the game.
(It is recommended to change the resolution in options.ini to 1280 800. The file is located inside your newly created bottle (path is sth like yourBottle/drive_c/users/deck/AppData/Roaming/yourBfmeGame/options.ini).
9. You can add games' shortcuts to your bottle and run them from there, if you like.
10. You can add games' shortcuts to steam library as well, if you fancy. If you make this step, make sure to do this in Properties/shortcut/launch options(IMPORTANT):
Set TARGET to flatpak
Set LAUNCH OPTIONS. For BFME 2 (when adding a shortcut to steam library):
run --command=bottles-cli com.usebottles.bottles run -b "yourBottleName" -p "lotrbfme2"
Remember to replace yourBottleName with the actual name of your bottle.
If you want to add shortcuts for BFME 1 or RotWK you need to change the name of the game at the end of the command accordingly.
(lotrbfme for BFME 1 and lotrbfme2ep1 for RotWK)
And that's it! If you have any problems, let me know in the comments and I'll try to help you out.
Happy conquering!
Thank you for this. I have all 3 discs but was struggling to install and get it working on the Steam Deck via ISOs. This worked! On the OLED it seemed to install much quicker and bottles took less than 60 seconds to create. I would add that you can update the Options.ini file after to change the resolution to 1280 800 for the Steam Deck. Happy out! 🎉
You're right, the resolution change is recommended. I guess I had to wait longer because I was using WiFi at that time.
Had to redo this for another steam deck and the new All In One launcher download doesn't seem to start in Bottles at all. Or through steam with proton compatibility. I click play (on either) and it tries to load for a few seconds and then just shuts down
I had the same problem even when I downloaded them on my pc and tried to transfer them. If you find away of getting them to work I would be very grateful
Its same here :((
what if we dont have the restarter.exe ? i mean for me its litteraly not here
Hi,
Thank you for the video.
Could you make an updated version with the latest launcher?
I can start the launcher the first time, but every time after it says it is already installed and i should use the shortcut from desktop.
If i use the shortcut from within the prefix it is the same.
same problem (
I'm trying to make it work but after the firsts steps in bottle (installing the exe) I click run to install the games but nothing happens, is there a way to fix this?
if you mean the launcher doesnt appear in ur downloads folder go to browser settings and then downloads and manual choose downloads a downloading location
I needed to add webview2 as a dependency
Thanks for sharing your solution!
When you say "Set TARGET to flatpak".... what do you mean exactly? Should the target be the bfme1.exe? Or should it be something else? I'm very new to this and don't quite know what you mean by "Set TARGET to flatpak"
I mean, let's say you've added a bfme1.exe to your steam library. To run it properly using bottles, right-click it, choose Properties. Then choose Shortcut and in "TARGET" field write: flatpak
In adding the launch option to steam, what is flatpak exactly?
It's a a sandbox environment unique for linux based systems in which users can run application software in isolation from the rest of the system
6:32 mine will not continue when I press that button
You need to make sure the path reaches the right .exe file
@@GondorianGaming93 I have downloaded the latest version and tall bottles to use that file
Im in the same boat here i think... up until 6:32 everything seems to work. But running it at this point just starts the program, but then it just stops.... it is pointing to the .exe file from the download url provided. I haven't looked heavily into it yet, but I did take the latest of everything as well.
@@codytheien16 sounds like the exact same problem I am in
I have a similar problem on this step. It might be related to the changes made on moddb page - the file I downloaded has a different name of .exe file, and the folder of installation has a different name, and overall there are several small changes in the installation process. Maybe running the earlier version of an installer could work - however, I have no way of finding those anywhere :(
2:26 5 minutes or hours or day lol 5 what?
Did you get this to work in Game Mode by any chance? I can only get it to work in Desktop Mode. Which is a shame. Thanks for the great video!
Hi there! Thank you! Yes, it is possible to run these in gaming mode, although there's some stuttering while handheld. On the other hand, if the deck is docked and connected to an external monitor, BFME runs like a dream.
Here's a preview of the gaming mode performance while handheld: ruclips.net/video/E4zwBWn1Wa4/видео.html
@@GondorianGaming93 Thanks for this. I played a complete skirmish using just Steam Deck controls with zero issues on the Steam Deck only by launching bottles and then restarter, then chose the game BFME1, then the patch 1.06 and launching game. If I try to launch through Steam in either game or desktop modes it fails to load. No matter what proton version I use either. Not sure why. Not a great pain to have to use Desktop and launch through bottles but would love to be able to launch straight through game mode instead.
@@DullaghanCormac Hey bud, sorry for jumping in 2 months later. I got it to work in gaming mode by adding bottles itself to my Steam Library, setting the control mode to keyboard and mouse, then launching in gaming mode.
doesn't work(
The problem is that the Launcher and SteamOS are being constantly updated and guides like this outdate super fast.
