What's funny is, I tried explaining this in a recent Nerdnest comment section but was told I was wrong to think a handheld like a Switch or Steamdeck can ever replace a box under a TV or at a desk. I was mostly generalizing that a hybrid system seems to be appealing to many and can satisfy most that aren't chasing specs and just want to play games. Especially as dad that focuses heavily on work and family, a handheld is a must for most of us in that boat. If I was given the choice between a console/desktop or nothing at all - it would be nothing at all then? These handheld pcs or handheld consoles, that act as hybrid if you like, has been a godsend for me, I thought I wasn't alone in the thinking that we should strive for that in the future but it seemed in that Nernest comment section I WAS ALONE in that thought process. If it can't do 60fps+, ray tracing, and ultra settings at max resolution - it isn't worth playing or using? OK, then gaming isn't for me then? I had a PS5 when launched but I barely touched it as I'm a hard working dad in his late 30's, just didn't have the time, handhelds became the only way to game so I sold it to be primarily a handheld gamer. Thankfully some DeckDaddy's showed up in that comment section and told me it's OK to be happy with these handhelds. Thanks Julien for this cup.
Yup. Funny how they are trying to impose their view of how gaming should be done. When it's YOUR experience and the only thing which matters is what you want to do. It doesn't affect them in any way, lol. Handheld gaming is such a boon when time is restricted, cannot be chained to a desk, often have to stop mid engagement and just want the simplicity of pickup'n play whenever / wherever. I'm right there with you. Gaming on a TV is great, but not always feasible. I sold everything but a Switch Lite while waiting for Rog Ally X. Best decision. Couldn't have been happier 😁
This comment is me almost exactly. i have a steam deck, switch and a ps5. Of course my ps5 is the most powerful, but who cares I can pick up my steam deck or switch and play 20 minutes whenever I want. I have zero time to sit at my ps5.
Steam Deck has technicaly more games than Xbox, Switch and PS5 combined. Outside of new triple A titles and games with anticheat it can play anything from the last 30 years and that is amazing value. My PS5, Switch Oled and PC are collecting dust since I got Steam Deck Oled this chrismass.
@EuropaeusOrigo Not to mention the game price on steam stores are cheaper than console games, the online Multiplayer if usually free on PC. They frequently give out discounts on holidays.. Plus you can always pirate if you don't want to spend any money...
I decided to pick up a Elden ring admit the dlc hype for the deck oled and wow was I blown away. With custom settings I was able to leave it at 90 hz with hdr and It feels amazing. As someone who also owns a good pc it’s a huge benefit to be able to play games on my deck or pc when I feel like swapping.
This is exactly why I enjoy having a gaming PC, gaming laptop, steam deck, PS5, Switch & hacked 3DS. I constantly switch around changing my mind on what I want out of my gaming setups and it's nice to be able to have all of my bases covered. I know not everyone can afford such a wide variety of devices but for myself this is the most fulfilled I've ever been as a gamer. Right now the number one way I play is actually on my steam deck but streaming my gaming PC and PS5. My gaming PC is at my desk and my PS5 is in my living room and I actually streamed them to the 65-in Sony TV in my bedroom using the steam deck. The way I use it docking my steam deck gets me the highest quality because I'm able to play any game at PC or PS5 quality on any of my TVs throughout the house. I have four different steam deck docks on every TV and I can move around. So if I want to play my PS5 at my desk I can do that with the steam deck docked and if I want to play my gaming PC in the living room I could do that with my steam deck docked. Or I can play my gaming PC or PS5 while walking around the house on the same device. I like having Firefox open as another app on my steam Deck while I'm gaming as well. When I go back to the native PS5 I really miss being able to just tab out and open Firefox whenever I want. Another thing to add I know this is long... Getting a high-end Wi-Fi 6 router is what made all of this possible. I had a not cheap but hundred-ish dollar Wi-Fi 5 router before and It was very hit or miss. Now I literally forget that I'm streaming these games.
I was playing Ark survival on my Switch last evening with my poor crippled dog who just had surgery sleeping in my lap on the outside deck enjoying a little fresh air. To think my oldest home gaming memories were Atari 2600 on a 12" B&W portable TV my dad bought for camping. Gaming is soo good now. Just enjoy it.
I sold my PS5 and Steam Deck for a Legion Go and egpu. Got that handheld gaming setup and 4k docked experience with the same device, same game library, and with no subscriptions.
was thinking about doing this with the Ally X coming out . Got the Ally now and love it but you can only use a certain egpu. Id still keep my PS5 but Id sale my big ass rig that sits on the floor.
@@JamieR There's a lot that I love about this setup, but it's not perfect. However, I've found ways to get around many of those imperfections. Like I boot into Playnite for my console like game launcher. I use 3D printed grips for more comfort when in handheld. I modded my Razer Core X egpu with Noctua fans to reduce fan noise...just to name a few. But now that I've customized this setup to my use case, I absolutely love it and haven't looked back. I will say that I got my Razer Core X used for $200, and my RTX 3080 refurbished for $400. I would not pay full price for either of these for this setup. All together, I paid about $1450 for the whole setup. A pc at a similar price point would be pretty similar to the experience I'm getting while docked to my egpu. So, I definitely would not pay more. But if you can find similar pricing to what I did, I think it's totally worth it.
@@tresxlord Yeah, that usb4 port is what made me pick the Legion Go over the Ally. Now the Ally X and Zotac Zone both have my attention lol. But I think the amount of enhancements may not necessarily be enough for an upgrade to be worth it. Time will tell.
Couldn't agree more when it comes to gaming subscriptions. Just found you recently and can directly relate to almost everything you say being a father of 3 in my 30s. Keep it up bro, love your stuff!
Funny I came across this video, I just got my deck about 2 weeks ago. As a father, husband and worker, my PS5 is basically a dust collector. My deck can plug into my TV if I want big screen if I have time, but otherwise it’s the deck when I have some time wherever I am.
It all comes down to time management and preferences. I enjoy playing my games in every platform. There is nothing like having options. But there is a time and a place for everything. There are times I like playing on portable devices, sometimes on PC, sometimes on consoles and sometimes I just dont play games at all.
I go back and forth with letting go of my PS5 as I love the portability of my steamdeck, but for me, some games are worth having that extra hardware so as to have the best experience AND so I don’t have to have additional launchers on my deck. (Ubisoft, EA, Rockstar, etc.)
I agree. The digital library is the most important aspect of my gaming. I still have every game I purchased since 2003 on Steam. When you are ready to build your PC monster your 4K 120hz gaming will return with a vengeance. I am fortunate to own XSX and PS5, I have them just in case something pops off that I need to play. Awesome video I relate to this so much. A friend convinced me to get a steam deck a year ago and my ps5 hardly get play time and the few times I have free I don’t be home or the tv is occupied and the steam deck fixed that for me.
I'm 30 yo no kids and living with family still so luckily i can still play my PS5 and Xbox but i will say i don't play them nearly as much as my steam deck and switch cause it restricts me to being tied to my TV. I can take my portables to work or play in my living room and not ignore my family lol
I find it interesting that you would lean towards a digital library. Sure steam is the best of the bunch, but nothing beats a physical library even when spread across multiple platforms.
Some of us have had the same digital libraries for over 20 years in the PC space. For consoles because they are a lifecycle product, yeah I would probably go with a disk too.
Yes, this is also the reason why handheld and mobile gaming is so huge in countries with high employee working hours. Mobile gaming Is huge in countries like China, India, South Korea, Japan. PS Vita though it failed in western countries, it was huge in Japan. I have a PS4 Pro but gaming on a gaming laptop is much more convenient than playing on a console. Let's say I am working and decide to take a break for 30 min, I can just load up a game on my gaming laptop, play for 30 min and then get back to working...
pc (3080), steam deck, ps5, switch. My order of usage. Gotta love the oh so many free games PlayStation has offered that I can play with visitors in my living room. XDefiant, Helldivers 2, and Horizon 5 anywhere anytime is so satisfying.
Best thing about about ps5 is the classic exclusives that are not on pc (yet) like shadow of the collusses, god of war 3, jack and dexter collection etc. Also god of war Ascension lobbies still have some players. Other than that steam deck has better value if you play indies
coming off your last cup, I realized I have a similar setup going and decided to pull the trigger on disconnecting my main PC. So now I rock my LegionGO, RG35XX+, and switch as daily drivers. the LGO w/ an egpu setup at my desk has been a game changer. and i'm only connecting to a 3050 8gb. It fufills all my desktop needs while also being portable. Anyone who is just chasing a superior console experience doesn't get the hybrid lifestyle. and that's ok.
The steam deck is an impressive little machine. Steam has thought of just about everything with this device. There have been so many times I thought well "well I wish I could adjust this" only to learn there is a setting for that. The simplicity of steam OS having the complexity of desktop mode to tinker is really what we all dreamed of when we all hacked our PSP's back in the day. I appreciate the fact that steam didn't lock the deck down and allows the user to do basically what they want. You could buy a steam deck and never buy one steam game if you choose and just emulate until your hearts content. The deck is one of those few devices that the very act of using it is fun even outside of gaming. I have tried the rog ally and windows on a handheld is just not fun. I know there are work arounds but none as seamless as the deck. It's unbelievable to me that years after this thing has released it's still as awesome as it is.
I get you bro. As a husband and father i trade my xbox series x for the steamdeck and i dont regret it, plus you can get both xbox and ps exclusives. Always nintendo switch and steamdeck on the go. Every moment counts.
I think I might wait for the Steam Deck 2.0 since I want better performance and visuals on a big screen. Also, man I love the Switch Lite when traveling and don't think I could carry around the Steam Deck as comfortably so I can sacrifice the performace. If Valve made a Steam Deck the size of the Odin 2 then I might compromise.
I find subscription services good for being busy, like last night I came home exhausted wanted to get a little bit of gaming in got my Ally loaded up Killer Instinct got a couple of matches in and passed out lol
I'm really wanting a deck due to recently becoming a father, coupled with Xbox's announcement to up the Gamepass fee. My big stopper is how much I've already invested in these consoles already with sunk sub costs and stuff. I bought a PS5 last year with 1 year of PS Plus and barely touched it, Spiderman 2 sucked me in :( I regret not just buying a deck and going the way of mobility over performance and sticking with my Xbox for anything else. This is the big issue with digital purchases! Nice and convenient but now I feel invested, wish cross progression existed on more games.
The guy who overthinks how to balance adulthood with gaming. It happens to most of us over 30... Portability becomes such an important convenience that detrones performance and every other aspect. My ps5, have been gathering dust for the last few months, but I like to know I have te option to play it if I get the itch.
yeah. you're either too tired, too busy, got kids, family, seems like a birthday every weekend, work, school. It happens. That's the same way i feel about my gaming computer. I play my steam deck for maybe an hour every few days to MAYBE. which is a lot more than me playing on my actual powerhouse computer. The convenience became king. I am a tinkerer by nature but i realized that i just want to be able to beat a game every few months at least lol. I also work from home, so i dont really want to be in my office area where my gaming set up is longer than the 9 hours i already have to. BUT, if i wanted to get some high quality gaming in, i like having a capable machine to do so.
My steam deck does do it better every time I grab my steam deck unplug it and walk out of the room the game continues to run perfectly, every time I pick up my ps4 and unplug it it stops working xD
I've been finding myself playing my steam deck more docked because i find it heavy after a while. I use it a lot to stream my PC from upstairs too, and if thr game can run well i run it native. I still find myself playing a lot of games like Final Fantasy X on my Switch because it wasnt a giant difference ... but it was a lot lighter and i prefer lighter weight for portable. (I flip flop a lot though too, so thats why i like your channel. Im always analyzing my gaming and trying to figure out "the best way" too. Lol.)
Being better than the Current Consoles is not the Point of the Steam Deck. The Point of the Steam Deck is to be a Gateway to PC Gaming. As a kid a Console makes more Sense because you have more Time as a Kid, as an Adult a PC that can also Game is far more Practical because you have less Personal Time or its More Spread out due to Scheduling. Also the Market is begining to get over Graphical Qaulity. Nintendo was Right fun is the Focus of Gaming. It always has been. The Steam Deck gives you Legal Access to Decades of Games instead of a 6 to 8 year Generation. Sure Graphical Quality is not the best due to its low Specs but its the Best Value.
I recently downsized my gaming systems, I had everything and now I just have an Xbox series X and a Steam Deck oled which was a game changer for me. If it’s not on Xbox I’ll just get the game on my Steam Deck…FF remake,SpiderMan and now Marvel vs Capcom collection.
I say Steam Deck and ROG ally are in the same category of portability and accessibility to games, I think people forget how often the are in fact in range of an outlet cuz I bet you you're not playing this in your car or on a walk. It's mostly indoors and in reality of actual use case, the steam deck usually beats the ally out by like only 30 to 45 mins when set to the same settings (720p, limited to 30fps on silent mode) and playing the same kind of game. Only dramatic difference I noticed is emulation which lasts like 5 hours on ally compared to steams 8 hours. I say that to say, the amount of times plug in your ally/ put it away is about the same as the steam deck unless you are in fact needing to game for the full 5/8hours in one sitting without charging, which i doubt that. But yes, just wanted to say that cuz after using both , i find it's the same use case length for me as i'm okay with reducing the Ally's features to get more battery life. and its usually about an hour if im at work maybe 2-3 hours when I'm off which I comfortably get out of the ally btw, then I put it away/ plug it up to do other things.
Rog Ally X will change the game imo. That increase in battery will make it amazing. If only they could relrase steam Os for any handheld or windows 12 has full handheld mode to disable features besides gaming and we'd be cooking! 😊
that's the problem. The hardware is great mostly, everybody agrees. but if you dont get the main part of the handheld working right (windows), then it gets ugly real fast. the unfortunate thing is that the OS isnt ROG's fault. So unless they did the same thing as steam and made their own OS and fine tuned it, they have a lot to work towards. then again, ROG has been on the poop list of customer service as well so that doesnt help. That's why the steam deck is just killing it and every other handheld coming out still cant beat it - even though their specs are just GOOD.
@@minusmartinTrue the software is a hit or miss mines have been behaving well recently lol and Asus definitely needs to work on gaining consumer trust again
@@minusmartin I can understand the appeal and I agree with a lot of what you said. The SD integration with it's hardware to Os is bar none the best. There is no denying it. Regardless of that, I still prefer the Ally to SD 🤷♂ And the reason why I don't mind is this; Remote desktop for everything which requires more than a few clicks to setup. Using a custom Os to strip it down for gaming. Use playnite, asus launcher etc to launch games. Which essentially can make it into a console experience (I prefer to keep it simple though). Been very happy with it, until I sold in prep for Ally X. As far as customer service... definitely an issue and I hope they correct it. EU isn't affected, but I can see it being a big problem residing in the US.
@@JamieR if you tinker, like most of us do with these devices do, then at the end of the day it kinda doesnt matter. once we do all of the set up and all, its all gravy. I get what you're saying. Its not like you get the ally and immediately cant play games and are consistently pissed off about something. Like you said, theres a way to get a close enough experience via other third party softwares. even booting up into a simple version of windows with only a console like software would basically do the same. It is really exciting to be able to do all of this on a handheld and be able to complain/compare/contrast between them. enjoy your gaming my man! cheers from Texas!
The subscription model assures the end of high budget made game and more cheap, by the dozen type of games that will have little to no innovations and become , like any sub service like netflix or television, by the numbers game that will be produced by the hundreds but in a questionnable quality and very similar to each others unfortunately, it looks like this approach is made because they are opening the creation of video games more and more to the average joe
I like collecting trophies and for some reason, I’ve been hesitant to purchase games on steamdeck over my ps5 because of this. For reference, I was an Xbox guy until I realized all the games I was playing (except halo), were playable on PlayStation. I bought a PlayStation about a year ago and found myself playing and enjoying a lot of exclusives like God of war, the last of us, spider man, death stranding, etc. I sold my Xbox and bought a steamdeck. I love the portability but don’t like that I can’t get the trophies for exclusives found on PlayStation lol. Anyone else feel the same?
I don't like trophies they create pressure I don't want and make gaming feel like work, not all the achievements are fun I would rather play a game they way I want and not worry about trophies.
let me throw in one extra piece of hardware that I think you should consider. xr glasses. no more need to dock and you can be playing on a 135 inch screen. something to consider.
I’ve been wanting to get into gaming for years, but if I did it I was thinking I’d do pc. However, PCs are missing a lot of the benefits of a console. A Steam Deck is not as good as a good PC. A Steam Deck is not as good as a good console. Moreover, it manages to give both the benefits albeit a bit worse than either one.
i completely agree on the subscriptions comment... I recently cancelled all my subs and moved to pc. Selling my PS5 cus its collecting dust and am sure someone else will love it, Steam only has really decluttered my digital brain haha.
Just use my Steam deck and steam on my pc. Will not use epic coz Always online DRM ubsoft are aids same with EA. As for gaming subscriptions they have there place. If u don't have a lot of money to spend on gaming an Xbox s and game pass can be hell of a deal
Whooo! Go Jesus! Haha. On that note if you haven’t heard of the Bible Project you should check them out 😊. I’m a Christian myself and I am trying to take seriously being a good steward of what God has given me and how I am using it to be a blessing to my family and others instead of my own pleasure. So video games are taking more of a back seat in my life because of that. My main goal in life is to be with Jesus, become like Him, and do as He did. I doubt he would spend as much money as I have on video games lol.
PS5 has no games. Nintendo Switch has an actual roadmap even though it's lifecycle is ending & the PS5 has no roadmap & recent removal of Sony rewards is a big letdown. I don't like PC especially Steam because of DRM I rather want subscription services because it's safer regarding Digital

The steam deck hooked me just by being able to do so much emulation and doing it very well.
I get you bro. As a husband and father i trade my xbox series x for the steamdeck and i dont regret it, plus you can get both xbox and ps exclusives. Always nintendo switch and steamdeck on the go. Every moment counts.
Erotic lol. Erratic is what you meant.
I think I mumbled the right word. Who knows.
It’s cool in theory but I find it is the focus of these companies baiting gamers.
I didn't get the Deck for the performance but for linux.
damn this discipline equals freedom hit me hard, brilliant video brav.
For me quality is a lot more about quality time rather than quality visuals.
This! Absolutely where I’ve been for the last 8 years! 👏
Lol.)
Great video and really good points. I really like the part about focusing or something. I really struggle with when it comes to gaming.
That’s really what it comes down to.
As I have gotten older and busier I have found that the Switch has been system of choice do to its flexability.
It really was for a while.
✊🏆
Totally. I am learning that it’s ok to not have access.
PS5 and steam deck are wonderful together especially if you're thinking about getting a portal just get a steam deck and get chiaki for deck
There is also the old adage of Jack of all trades, Master of none!
Jack of all trades, master of none, Though oftentimes better than a master of one.
A channel about gaming and coffee? My two favorite things? Where have you been? Subbed
Regardless of that, I still prefer the Ally to SD 🤷♂
And the reason why I don't mind is this; Remote desktop for everything which requires more than a few clicks to setup.
It seems great but windows just is so clunky.
Chose a hell of a time to make coffee.
I think im a nin..pony..bot as i absolutely love my ps4..my xbox series s and my switch!! Damn im lucky to be alive in such a great time for gaming
You summoned me via Kingdom Hearts
A Switch and an RG35XX that covers my gaming needs for around 3 to 4 years more. It's a decision I made and stuck with that.
Totally man.
let me throw in one extra piece of hardware that I think you should consider. xr glasses. no more need to dock and you can be playing on a 135 inch screen. something to consider.
I don’t love that experience personally.
I have my ps5, Xbox series x, and Nintendo switch it covers all my gaming needs and love it
Totally. You got a good setup.
💥
What’s your main console
i completely agree on the subscriptions comment... I recently cancelled all my subs and moved to pc. Selling my PS5 cus its collecting dust and am sure someone else will love it, Steam only has really decluttered my digital brain haha.
I have experienced everything gaming has to offer and in my opinion Steam Deck is better.
ok
🤣
K
W take
Been here a while. Love your vids… I swear if you dropped the coffee thing out of the videos you could easily blow past 100k subs by now.
Why?
When do you play your PS5?
I don’t.
great cup brother!
Thanks man.
That’s crazy
Just use my Steam deck and steam on my pc. Will not use epic coz Always online DRM ubsoft are aids same with EA.
As for gaming subscriptions they have there place.
If u don't have a lot of money to spend on gaming an Xbox s and game pass can be hell of a deal
I just game on pc and switch these days. I am subscribed to pc gamepass for titles I won’t buy on steam.
I guess technically I am pc Nintendo too
Whooo! Go Jesus!
Yea but he did fellowship
@@jdxcoffee that’s right! I’ve kinda made a loose rule for myself to only game with my friends and family. Not doing many solo ventures any more.
How many videos are you gonna do on the same topic? 😂
All of them
You left out your 3ds haha
I don’t daily it no
You are not making Coffee. You are performing a ritual.
It’s weird being this early for a YT video lol.
Haha.
Looks like a meth lab lol
PS5 has no games. Nintendo Switch has an actual roadmap even though it's lifecycle is ending & the PS5 has no roadmap & recent removal of Sony rewards is a big letdown. I don't like PC especially Steam because of DRM I rather want subscription services because it's safer regarding Digital
PS is doodoo 💩….
