Why I Don't Prune My Deciduous Bonsai In Late Summer

- Hard pruning deciduous bonsai in late summer is generally not advised. I explain how to determine when you should stop pruning in your area (8 weeks before your first fall frost date), and explain the reason behind this guidance.
Trees pack their cells with glucose to survive winter. When you prune late, the tree does have time to regain the energy to survive winter.
Thanks for the interesting fact. Yes, I agree, except for perhaps a drastic late prune on a weak tree, I don't think pruning in late summer will kill a tree - I've certainly pruned late and haven't killed a tree. However, tender shoots induced by pruning can be killed/damaged by frost. Late frosts in spring sometimes do this.
That's some great info to know. The reason makes logical sense. If that's the case, based on data in my climate in Pennsylvania, I should wrap up my major pruning by the end of August. Thanks for the info!
Thanks for watching. I've heard this rule a few times before, but it never clicked until this summer. I agree, it seems logical, hence why I'm going to start following it. I have ignored it in the past however, without any problems - I do think light pruning is fine.
@@BonsaiNorthwest I makes sense to me. That’s again for the great info.
Great information BNW...Seems like sound guidance, especially for the of us with less experience...Would hate to gamble and end up losing or seriously damage a tree...Really like your thought process and the way you are presenting your thoughts...You are doing great and always eager to see your next video...Well done...Thanks...Sequim, WA...
Thank you! I appreciate your kind words as always. I'm enjoying producing content so I have no plans to stop, although I might slow down to one video per week soon, as I'll be busier this fall.
Solid advise, and very well explained. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
