The most clear and concise explanation of why and how to properly prune fine-foliaged juniper I've seen yet! Intuitively, I'm familiar with this technique, but the close-ups and narration will make it easier for me to explain it to novices. All I have to do is forward them the link!
Another rainy day here in Tuscany. I'm doing a "Jelle-athon" watching all your videos while I work on my Bonsai trees on the kitchen table. Great content and loads of great tips. See you at the Trophy! Cheers, Carlos.
I love this channel! The information we really need. I like both your long videos and shorter ones, I really don't care what length. What is annoying is the guys who make the video longer by adding long drawn out stories about things unrelated to the topic of the video. But when you take time like this to show us what we need to look for, and how to do it and why, this is what we really need.
@@GrowingBonsai Absolutely. Have you seen the ones where the guy starts waffling about the traffic on their way to whatever? For the next 15 minutes. But you never do that, if you take time, it' to show us real needful techniques and all.

Hi Yelle, another great demonstration of your bonsai knowledge, thanks for sharing 👍🏾🇬🇧. A 10 second ending showing before and after side by side images would have been great.
really good video, I already knew it but still well made good content. I want to add just a thing. If you allow the tree to push you can the pinch it BUT only do it one time, it’s true that it is stressful but if you re in refining a tree you get a very good result. With my refined tree a pinch it between April and may then allow to push (you get smaller runners compared to you video) and after the really hot part of summer I prune all the runners to get a really small third flush before winter
Agreed there are moments where it has its use. I am putting a tree in a show and I really should have pinched in eaely spring to get it perfect now. Ah well..
Absolutely spot on again Jelle. I hope you don't mind but I am about to prune my Juniper and thought it would be great to follow your principles to the letter - I shall call it 'Pruning Juniper like Jelle'. So much useful content my friend :)
Interesting method. You keep control of green mass volume wisely. In my ignorance i was pinching tips with fingers . I still don't understand why taking green damages more than take away green and a piece of wooden brown material. (Maybe it recovers faster?)
The difference is the scale: The typical pinching is done to all growing tips on all branches. This causes stress. The pruning I show here just removes a few tufts and leaves all othe foliage in place. On top, the extentions are what drives backbudding. Once it extends this much, you will not be able to finger-prune, you need scissors.
Very nice tree Jelle. And informative video as always. I just thinned out a few of my Itoigawas more or less in the exact same way. Always good to find out that it was the correct way. With all the Itoigawas you acquired this year you still take cuttings? I guess my theory stands: You can never have enough Itoigawas. I took cuttings from everything that I cut of that was viable. Although very late in the year I still think it's worth it. Do you protect the cuttings you're taking now from frost in the winter or do you treat them all in the same way no matter at what time of the year you took the cuttings?
I only have about 80 individually potted-up cuttings [2-4 years old], ~100 stuck into pots this year to strike, 15 unworked stock and ~10 styled junipers. You think I should stop rooting cuttings already?
I just plop them in a pot, and in spring I pull all cuttings, plant individually those that have rooted, and those not-rooted I replant. No special treatment. (Buuut.. I do not care if half of them drowns! ruclips.net/video/zVpKiYHpZlM/видео.html
I’m curious do you think it good practice to do this to a tree you plan to style this autumn? I have a few Kishu I plan to work and wanted to style them this autumn. Do I do this pruning before hand or during, or is it best to hold off on pruning this year?
If you are planning to do a styling it is sometimes good to prune in spring, so you open up the canopy and get good inner growth. For an open canopy that already has good growth, I would not prune.
The acorns are dropping right now. Which is a great time to collect. You do realize growing oaks from seed is a lengthy process? Then go for it! Plant them immediately as acorns germinate in fall. In spring, clip 80% of the formed young taproot away.
This was just a few weeks ago. I just go by the plant, I let things run. In late winter I might clean up if needed. And in summer after the big spring push. I think I neglected to say this, indeed
