    Super clever how you cut around the base of the Jin before stripping the bark. This way it won't tear down the trunkline in your design

    How does it go from growing out the trunk to short again? That's what I am having trouble grasping that for conifers. Especially if you are supposed to let it grow unfettered till the trunk is as thick as you want it. I understand trunk chopping for deciduous treea but how does it go for juni and other conifers? I have nursery trees that have been growing for 1-2 years that are already over 5 feet tall they are in baskets and weren't small to begin with but how do you get it back to a short tree with thick trunk?

    • @DuctTapePwnz
      @DuctTapePwnz 3 года назад

      you need to decandle/candle prune on pines and prune on junipers so they backbud lower on the trunk. Once those branches have developed enough, then you cut/jin the top of the trunk. If you're having a hard time getting backbuds lower on the tree, you can still cut the trunk and bend the higher branches down, to run closer to the trunk.

      Not removing a lot of foliage will keep the tree strong, shortening the time it will take towards establishing a mature bonsai design. We've had the tree for about 10 years before styling.

    As soon as you cut that first branch I told myself “if that was my tree it would be dead”
    No matter what I do except wiring Chinese juniper it dies. I could cut a branch, fix roots, over water or under water. No matter what they always end up dead
    I have a beautiful Chinese juniper that I’ve made windswept and I’m scared to repot it or even touch the foliage as I don’t want this one to die.
    I know it’s important to buy trees and learn by growing and killing accidentally but I know this one has so much potential.
    Can someone point me in the direction to Chinese juniper tips that is very extensive?

      Only if the tree is very healthy - we have had this tree for over a decade and the tree was already growing in a small pot and was very healthy. Usually we advise to repot in the next spring (not at the same time).
