Just came across this video. This is a great example of how to break it down and explain to us newbies what we're looking at. Most of the videos out there teaching bonsai show the artist cutting and clipping but not really telling us why s/he is doing so. They use lingo like "first branch" and "second directional branch" but they don't really explain what all that means and how they come to make those decisions. Here, you start by showing us the simple but very necessary step of cleaning up the undersides of these branches before we even make any cutting decisions... it's that level of show and tell that helps someone like me who's only been doing this for a few months. Kudos, and thank you! I have 5 nanas in pots (three 5" and two 6") and this takes away some of the intimidation that keeps me from really diving into them. Thanks again! And well done :-)

I like what you did with the tree. I think it looks great. But one question. The branch that you jinned… if you were taking a longer term view of the outcome of the tree, would you have left the branch as it was as a sacrifice branch for 2-3 years to thicken the base of the tree more, then jin it? Just curious. Thanks for a very informative video!

Good point Bob! That would be a good option if you planned on holding onto this one for a while or putting it in a bigger.
