It’s honestly not much better in more progressive academic spaces. I went vegan as a teen and had a rather unique childhood that allowed me to experience schooling on both sides of the aisle. I lived in a very conservative area of AZ until age 16, then went to a private performing art school in MA for a year followed by a year at a public high school in MA. Personally, I’ve always been a very passionate progressive and like most of my political beliefs, my veganism was at best dismissed but more often outright ridiculed by my teachers and peers in AZ schools. My attempt to get a vegan lunch option at my high school was ignored and when I tried to start multiple social clubs, one dedicated to environmentalism and the other to vegan activism, I couldn’t even find a teacher to sponsor them. I was also a very good student, so when I tried to include animal rights in an essay or research project, I noticed right away the tendency for my grades to suffer.
At both the private and public schools I attended in MA, a significantly more politically progressive community, I found that all of my political opinions were more acceptable except for my veganism. Naively, I thought that since the dress code was more relaxed and there were rainbow flags in many of the classrooms that I could have productive conversations about animal rights with my teachers and classmates. I was wrong. I brought up animal rights during a Socratic session in US history and my teacher immediately shut me down. Later, I wrote a meticulously researched final paper analyzing the parallels between the industrialized killing of humans and the bigotry that enabled it during the Armenian g€nocide and later WWII, and the industrial slaughter of non humans and the speciesism that enables it. The paper was for a class titled “H0locausts and G€nocides” and the prompt for the paper was to analyze a contemporary injustice that is relevant to the h0locaust. There could not have been a more appropriate scenario to include animal rights. But my grade in that class went from a 98% to a 66%, my teacher marked the assignment as not submitted, and had a private conversation with my about how disgusting and disrespectful my paper was. I tried to argue the validity of my position, but I had to go over the teacher to the Vice principal to force him to even accept the paper. And it wasn’t until after I showed them the dozen h0locaust survivors whom I cited and quoted in my paper (yeah the teacher hadn’t even read the whole thing or checked my sources before he decided to give me a zero). And even then, I could tell the vice principal supported me begrudgingly and even after accepting my paper, the teacher still gave me a D.
I still think that politically progressive minds are far more likely to accept veganism than conservatives. But in the year 2024, veganism seems to be one of the few issues that both the left and right come together to be against.

Ben sounds like a manipulator to me. He knew he would be seen as a hypocrite, so he defused the question by quickly identifying as the worst possible option. That way, the questioner has nothing worse to throw at him, and is essentially silenced. Ben has said, by both his words and actions, that he will never be vegan. The truth is, he just cares that much more about himself and his own pleasure than about that of others.
This makes it clear to me that he is a man of “Do as I say, not as I do” which makes him completely untrustworthy and not worthy of listening to.
He has a talent for shutting people down by speaking really fast. But fast doesn’t mean right, and this is not the first time I have seen him shut someone down who actually had a good point, but just couldn’t get a word in edgewise.

Ah, yes, the "meat tastes good "argument. No, it doesn't. Meat is just the platform for the flavor profile you're looking for. Think about this: you slaughter a cow and chop it up. From that same cow, you can make Mexican food, French cuisine, German food, Portuguese food, American food, Asian cuisine, British food, Italian dishes, etc. All those different styles of food from the same animal. It's not the meat that tastes good; it's the spices, sauces, and cooking methods that give it its flavor. If you've ever been to a barbecue cooking contest, the most important thing is the barbecue sauce.

I get the motivation of Shapiro not aligning his moral behaviour (not only eating habits) with his moral standards due to his political location on the right: It has a tactical background because vegans are considered as left and woke (soy boy meme). I'm a right winger too in Germany and I refused to put tactical issues above the lives the others - it's just not worth it, the price the animal are paying day by day for political strategies is to high so I went vegan two years ago.

You rightfully bring up his Good Ranchers ad, but I think it’s also worth discussing that this is a major revenue source for him. I’ve listened to several Daily Wire host podcasts and they always have ads for Good Ranchers. Lots of ad money coming in from this company. If Ben went vegan, he would lose a lot monetarily speaking. It’s the same reason even an otherwise very thoughtful and self reflective farmer might go out of his way not to understand the arguments a vegan is making to him. He just doesn’t know how he will earn his living if he accepts that it’s wrong to kill animals, so he refuses to accept it. This, in my opinion, is another reason why Ben would rather live acknowledging his hypocrisy but pretending he has no obligation to correct it. The Daily Wire’s far right rhetoric is often highly inflammatory (and I say that as a person who listens from time to time because I’m actually fairly conservative in many of my views (and also vegan for many years!) It must be difficult to secure consistent ad revenue, and to alienate a sponsor of all his shows by using his platform to promote veganism (which he would do just by becoming vegan) would be a very difficult thing to do. It would also be the right thing to do, and he really should do it. But it would certainly be difficult.

I do think recognising one's hypocrisy is the first step to change. I may not like Ben Shapiro. I may not care for his hypocrisy. BUT I do respect his intellectual honesty, because as least it offers the possibility of change. He recognises what the right thing to do is. He just needs to finally 'take the plunge' so to speak.
I suppose the problem are those people who are comfortable with their own hypocrisy but I'm not sure Shapiro is. He's such a high-profile figure and as this video demonstrates, he is being held to account by others for his hypocrisy, so, eventually, it feels like he may have no choice but to change. Maybe I'm being too optimistic, but it's certainly preferable to someone who ties themselves in knots trying to 'intellectually' defend the indefensible in order to 'justify' their own lifestyle.

I watch a lot of Ben's content, so I've actually seen A LOT of segments over the years that showed he has some sympathy for the animals unalived for meat. A couple of months ago, Ben did a youtube short reacting to Gary Yourofsky debunking a meat eater argument, and his response wasn't a full embrace, but implied that Gary basically ate in that argument. There was another video where he reacts to Thanksgiving TikToks, and one of the clips was a person with a pet turkey alongside a cooked turkey in the oven, which is supposed to be funny in some people's eyes, and he thought it was sad and mentioned he is one of the people that would like for lab grown meat to happen.
While we all (vegans) wish he would embrace what he clearly knows what is the ethical choice, I still think it's huge to have a person with his large of a platform (let alone conservative) even just acknowledging that there is a moral dilemma in unaliving animals. It shows he is a lot more honest than he has to be and seems to think it's important enough to vocalize to his audience on multiple occasions. Ben doing that is better than most people, so I have to give credit on that.

Hearing some of Shapiro's reasoning, it is the same for Same Harris. I'm big fan of Sam as public intellectual, listening to his podcast and meditation app. But his position on veganism was always hard to bend with his other views. Here are some: supporter of cultivated meat, admitting moral inconsistency and hypocrisy of eating meat but doing so anyway, tried being vegetarian when younger and felt "miserable without energy", teaching buddhist-inspired compassion and kindness, as neuroscientist he's convinced at minimum mammals (maybe birds) are conscious with capacity to suffer and feel joy ...
Ed, I recommend to do similar analysis on Sam. It would be more complex landscape than Shapiro's case, for sure.

Maybe you should watch this video again. Ed wasn't trying to prove Ben was a hypocrite about veganism if Ben said it.
Ed was trying to call Ben to act on his supposed beliefs if he is for veganism.
But Ben was hypocritical in other ways which Ed talked about. Such as Ben saying people get over offended when he got overly offended at PETA calling the mass daily systemic killing of livestock a Holocaust.
Ed also criticized Ben for other things like getting hung on words and semantics too much when that doesn't change reality, like animal abuse.
And Ben also claimed to care about truth and reality, but Ben fell prey to getting offended, distracted, and tangled in words too much.
Ed also talked about the problem of how some people use admitting they're hypocritical as a excuse to not have action.
Also, how do you know Ben wasn't just giving lip service to the man who called Ben out to his face? And that maybe Ben didn't plan to act on his views for veganism.

I'm a social-liberal and I couldnt care less about the political ideology of my peers. I'd love to have Ben as fellow vegan. Even though veganism is evidently a progressive idea, it is also alligned with a couple of conservative values. Personal responsibility, as Ed mentions, is one of them. The sanctity of life is another one. Also, veganism is not revolutionary, it is reformist. We are not trying to create a new morality from scratch, but rather just expand the existing moral circle so it includes all sentient individuals. Be brave, Ben. I’m curious about this topic and have some questions that came up whilst watching , full disclosure I’m not vegan and so please excuse my ignorance if this is insensitive . How do vegans feel about parasites ? Because Parasites cause suffering and pain and death even to many animals. Sadly I had first hand experience of a horrible parasite killing an animal . However the parasite is a living as well. What do vegans propose we do about parasites. Of course parasites affect humans as well. If u get a parasite would you kill it or let it take its natural course even if that has a huge negative affect on your health , death even ?

It is absolutely concerning how many people here seem to "like Ben Shapiro". I recently lost my role as an organiser for an activist organisation because of transphobia that had infected the higher management of the group. • @vela-6

I also want to say, I think veganism better lines up with conservatism. We value all life, no matter how big, small, or where it's located. Of course, human life is infinitely more important than any other life, as we have a moral compass and we're able to make decisions that impact the rest of eternity for all life. We also tend to be more financially focused. Supply and demand. Don't buy things you don't want to support. Conservatives tend to have so much love for their own dogs (as a stereotype, but stereotypes are partially true). But unfortunately, they are often unable to connect other animals to this same concept of compassion simply because humans have slapped the label of "man's best friend" to dogs. But I don't have any conservative friends who disagree with me when I talk about veganism, they just don't really believe it to be safe because they've been kind of manipulated to believe you need constant meat to be healthy.
