  • How accurately can the Dreem 2 Headband predict your sleep 💤? That is the question I answer in this video. I also made shorter version of this video: • Dreem 2 Headband vs Sc...
    A scientific paper was just released to the scientific community where they compared the Dreem 2 Headband to a professional EEG device🛌. The professional device basically has more than a dozen electrodes attached to your head and face and tracks brain waves. Here I summarize the results from the paper.

    The correlation between Dreem 2 and the Lab for sleep stages is very low, less accuracy than guessing?

  • @petergamma741
    @petergamma741 2 года назад

    The Dreem 2 is not available anymore, and therefore disqualified for many applications.
    The Muse S could be an alternative.
    The Muse app allows sleep tracking, but it is not very satisfying. To write down values from the app, or only look at graphs on the app is very limited.
    Fortunately, the Mind Monitor app from Computer Scientist James Clutterbock can solve this problem. The app is excellent, and we can get all the desired data. But the Mind Monitor has no sleep tracking.
    But there is Sleep: An Open-Source Python Software for Visualization, Analysis, and Staging of Sleep Data. I should be possible to feed the Mind Monitor data into the Sleep software and get a professional setup in that way. A scientific review about this would be highly desirable.

    Maybe this could be a dumb question, but why these confusion matrices never sum 100% for rows or columns (for this video I would expect that rows total must be 100%, for another one that you compared Withings Sleep Analyzer vs EEG I would expect that columns must sum 100%)?

      Hi! So that is difficult for me to give advice on. I guess important things to keep in mind: (1) the dreem headband has mainly been tested on people with relatively normal sleep, so I do not know how it would act with people with sleep problems; (2) the scientific community might still be more receptive to traditional PSG devices [this might not be a good thing, but it might be the truth], (3) I guess you will always have fewer electrodes and data then with most PSGs. That being said, these Dreem bands are more comfortable, and much easier to operate. Just some random thoughts, hope they help! Have a great day!

    Thank you Rob for this high quality, informative video.
    Have you thought of getting a Dreem2 device and making a study verifying sleep stages detection on your own?
    A neuro-tech enthusiast has reviewed Neuroon sleep tracking device this way - got the Neuroon device, booked a night at a medical facility with PSG's and during the night had both the Neuroon and the PSG reading the biometric data. He did his own study and published it here: alxd.org/neuroon-analysis-results.html#neuroon-analysis-results
    I think that a study made by just one person can be much more credible then the one done by multiple others, but involved in product development of the tested device.

      Hi Karol, thanks for your comment! For sure, this is definitively in the works. The Dreem company has offered to provide me with a device, and I can test it once I can easily travel back to the sleep lab in the Netherlands I work with. I have done this in the past for the Fitbit (ruclips.net/video/UAcasFNzUl8/видео.html) and the Oura ring (ruclips.net/video/atWcp6FmnbE/видео.html). I also have data on the Withings Aura Sleepmat. Indeed, independence is very important for this :-) . I was actually thinking of trying to get a hold of several devices and testing all of them for a few nights at once. However, it will likely be September once this is really feasible for me to do, given that work and COVID-19 are making things kind of tricky at the moment.
      Thanks for commenting and for the link!

    Thank you so much for your reviews! I heard from a sleep doctor that CBD interferes with REM sleep in a bad way. Is this true?

    • @TheQuantifiedScientist
      @TheQuantifiedScientist  4 года назад

      Hi N V, so, from what I understand using weed/marihuana can mess up your sleep cycles, similar to alcohol. So, though it might be easier to fall asleep, the quality of sleep is often lower. Now, I must say I cannot comment on CBD specifically, though I suspect there are few substances that can actually improve your sleep long-term, most are in the end detrimental if used too long. But again, I am just speculating here. What do you think?

    pretty bad rem detection. How can the Dreem 2 be used to test smart watches?

    • @TheQuantifiedScientist
      @TheQuantifiedScientist  2 года назад

      Hi! The REM sleep is actually not that bad, I just used a different type of confusion matrix which did not scale the columns in this older video. I think the main different I see between nights I score manually myself and the Dreem2 is that it does tend to "smooth" sleep stage scoring slightly. What I have seen personally is that mostly in REM segments there are sometimes short periods where the eyes are not moving, and these are still classified as REM by the Dreem2. Question is if this is wrong or right. If the eyes are not moving for 2-3 minutes in between long REM segments, was this really not part of REM. I'd have to dive into the AASM Sleep Scoring Manual to check what the current guidelines are. Overall, I think the Dreem2 is good enough to get "rough-ish" impressions of which watches are doing well and which are not😊

    Love all your videos and the thoroughness of your tests! Too bad this is really not a review and the paper is only a non-peer-reviewed version from the company selling it. However, since you have access to lab grade equipments & ZMax, Dreem has published the code for the actual method they called DOSED, would be very interesting to compare your own grading from ZMax vs DOSED to the EEG data recorded. github.com/Dreem-Organization/dosed/
