  • How accurately can the Oura Ring predict your sleep 💤? That is the question I answer in this video.
    For 18 nights I wore both the Oura Ring and a professional scientific sleep EEG to bed 🛌. The professional device basically has more than a dozen electrodes attached to my head and face and tracks my brain waves. By wearing this device and the Oura Ring to bed 🛌, I tested how well the Oura is able to predict the different sleep stages.

      Fitbit has a higher accuracy, but you say the oura ring's sleep score is a very good coorelate of many other metrics? Is the same the case with Fitbit or is oura ring's slessp score somehow superior while fitbit's accuracy is superior?

    The most helpful review and video I’ve seen on the Oura ring and I’ve watched a lot of them. Thank you so much for taking the time to make such a scientific and high quality video. You’ve helped me and others tremendously in making an educated buying decision. Without your videos I would have been ignorantly assuming the data these trackers give are accurate.

      @@jmax4238 the fact that it only gets 60% accuracy on a specific user is probably quite telling. Only two things I can think of that could go wrong is (1) a faulty device or (2) oversized ring. Only in case of the latter can the low correlation with a professional device be justified. Any other reason mean ms that the device does not work as advertised.

    I’m a sleep medicine neurologist. My view on these kinds of sleep trackers as they exist now is they can be useful in helping people recognize their current sleep habits/patterns and modify their behavior. In order to sleep well it helps to set the conditions for good sleep, so adjusting your behavior accordingly is often an important part of treating sleep problems. As long as you don’t worry too much about the accuracy of specific sleep stages, you can get a general sense of what time you slept, how much you slept, and when you woke up. That’s actually quite useful as a clinician.

    I was looking at the Oura Ring as something different from the Fit Bit Charge 2 he currently has. This video along with a previous video about the Fit Bit Charge 4 (actually 3) helped me to decide on the Fit Bit Charge 4. After all 71.6% accuracy is better than 51% when sleep is your primary concern.

    Best review video on Oura ring so far! Clear scientific data input in making this video and the ideas are presented in a simple way. It really helps me to decide whether I should purchase the Oura ring or notb, when the accuracy of sleep monitoring would be the major reason to make the decision (especially when I've considering other device for tracking sleep cycles likes Fitbit, but with much cheaper price). What I've learned that it's almost impossible to get a high accuracy (at this stage of technological advancement) despite Oura ring has always claimed to be the best sleep tracker so far when compared to other. But when you have devoted enough time to track the whole trend with the possible factors affecting your sleep quality recorded, one would benefit from these devices and explore the best environment and setting for achieving their best good night sleep. Anyway Great Content and I wish everyone here a good night sleep.

    I am wearing the ring for two weeks, I enjoy it a lot, it llos great and the interface quite intuitive. I don't need absolute accuracy of sleep tracking, since I sleep relatively well. I like the activity goal setup which considers past day and night, age etc. At the moment it asks me normally less than I actually do - and this is a good motivation, exceeding instead of falling short.

    This is an absolute *treasure* for those of us trying to sort through the noise of all the health experts and influencers doing clandestine paid advertisements for these types of devices.
    Your findings also match what I'd heard from a friend who examined this device with polysomnography.
    Hopefully Oura can improve their software to match their promises / marketing. Given that it doesn't work as a fitness tracker since infrared LEDs deal poorly with motion, it really should perform significantly *better* than fitness trackers at sleep-tracking , not significantly worse! Especially if it costs 2-3x more.
    This really helps protect consumers from unscrupulous companies, health pundits, and influencers who take advantage of the fact that consumers lack EEGs (much less PSG) to validate claims. Thank you Rob.

    My experience with the Oura ring is that it does not distinguish between awake time during the night and sleep. It got the awake portion confused with light, deep and REM sleep alike.I was surprised and disappointed, my understanding was that Oura boasts 98% accuracy when compared with a professional sleep device.

    Love the video and the information it presents, and you are a very charming man. However, I believe what you are describing as a "prediction" (referring to anticipating a future event) is really a "description" (referring to an event in the past, i.e., how you slept on a given day).

    Subscribed, liked, commented. This is definately the way these kinds of devices should be reviewed! I also enjoyed the fitness tracking reviews that you did. Most reviews are from tech sites and wellness sites, and really they only review the form factor and ease of use of devices, instead of how well they actually work in their objective. I was interested in the Withings Steel HR and your HR comments gave me a wake up call there.

    I have used the second generation oura ring for about one year and a half. I agree with your findings. It is not possible to predict sleep stages with an accelerometer and PPG. However I do find the Oura ring reasonably accurate in predicting sleep duration (total time in bed). This metric has helped me keep a consistent sleep schedule. I do not know the accuracy of the HRV metric, However I do find the rate at which resting heart rate drops to be useful in determining how quickly I relax during the initial stages of sleep. Thank you for the video. RL

I returned my Oura Ring after feeling it didn’t fit well in my overall routines, specially because it’s not a dedicated sports tracker. I do believe a green light sensor for moments of training would be a great advantage even at the expense of battery life, there are many solutions to that issue. Awesome, thank you! So, I have actually done a study on the Wim Hof technique pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32290188/ . Now, this is just my personal opinion, but: I think there are effects of the breathing techniques that he uses for sure. However, I am not sure if you cannot reach similar results in other ways of exercise and breathing, and if the effects are overstated. Objectively, I can just say that we saw changes in the metabolism of people in our experiment, however what that means for the consequences of the breathing technique and how specific the effects are to his technique I am not sure. Though i must admit I am naturally very skeptic to these kinds of things, so I just try to state the facts as they are :-) . Have a great day!

    A couple of things to consider: first, the visual at 6 minutes says it all. I’d much rather wear the ring than wear the helmet with 500 wires coming from it. Second, the accuracy is less important than the consistency. Oura is not a measurement device. It is a tracker. It is meant to help you see the delta between your best and worst. For that it doesn’t need a super high degree of accuracy. Finally, Oura results take about a month to stabilize as it has to learn your baseline. Did you wear the ring for a month prior to running your test? I have an Oura and I really like it.

    In the end I decided on the Healbe Gobe 2 Smart Band, which in my opinion cannot track correct REM phases (they always look too modeled and there were always more REM phases than cycles per night), but apart from that It was a very good choice for overall health tracking, as the electrical bioimpedance sensor offers far more options than optical sensors (calorie intake, hydration and sweat-based stress / emotional tension). There is now already the successor, the GoBe 3, which should offer even better measurement results and a larger range of functions, in case you are interested to test this as well ;)

    So roughly 60% accurate. As opposed to not tracking which is 0% accurate. & how much does a professional sleep tracking device cost? I like the honest data. It’s very useful. But, I think the real question here is if the Oura Ring can be a useful tool? I’ve seen comparisons showing it to be more accurate & useful than Fitbit or Whoop. I’ve also seen The data from Oura be useful in providing ideas for sleep improvement. I think this video may muddy the water between accuracy & usefulness. Thoughts? I’m curious what they have planned for the future, as well. Disclaimer: I don’t own any of these devices

      @TheQuantifiedScientist  3 года назад +2

      Hi! Good point 😄In my experience when it comes to sleep tracking, fitbit performs best, closely followed by Whoop and then Oura at some distance. Now, as to usefulness: the Oura ring measures many things very well, and some of the scores it provides in the morning are related to real world mental and physical performance the next day. I think fitbit still lags behind in this, and has put some of it behind a paywall. So it really depends on youur goals. If you want to know your sleep stages, choose fitbit; if you want actionable advice, choose Oura. I discuss some of this in more recent videos . Have a great day!

    • @TheQuantifiedScientist

      Thanks for the compliment! Depends a bit on your budget and exact goals. If you just want to know what time you went to bed and woke up, and potentially find out something about your sleep apnea with the oxygen saturation sensor, the FitBit Charge 4 will work fine. If you want to invest more money in something that can track sleep even better (but is also more cumbersome to wear) the Dreem 2 headband would be great as well, but it is much more expensive. Not sure if this helps, but let me know.

    I've been using Oura for almost a year. Over that time, I've also noticed that my REM sleep times are consistently low and the awake times are consistently high. It was very interesting to see that your study vs EEG confirms this.
    I was especially struck by your comment that you believe this is more to do with software than hardware ... can you expand on this?

    • @TheQuantifiedScientist
      @TheQuantifiedScientist  4 года назад

      Hi David. Glad it was helpful! Thanks for your comment :-). I would think that the Oura ring has at least as much data to work with as the FitBit, they measure mostly similar things, and the Oura even has some extra data. The main difference is the position where it is worn, finger vs arm, however I suspect this should not be a major difference. The data quality of the Oura ring also seems pretty good. So, if they have similar data (and data quality), they should be able to have similar prediction accuracy. The fact that they don't makes me think it is mainly an algorithmic problem Does that make sense?

    Always love your videos. I'd have two quesions!
    1) Is "REM sleep" lighter than "light sleep"? I'm asking this because it's always displayed as the upper one.
    2) Which sleep tracking device would you recommend? (The smallest, the better - i.e. a smartwatch is too big)
    thanks for your work :)

    • @TheQuantifiedScientist
      @TheQuantifiedScientist  4 года назад +2

      Hi Rodas!
      Thanks so much for the compliment!
      (1) I guess most scientists would not necessarily say that REM sleep is lighter than light sleep per se. I suspect it is mostly displayed on top since sleep is often divided into REM vs non-REM (all the other stages) sleep. This is partly historical as far as I know/expect, and partly because of the way our sleep cycles are structured. The comment by "
      György Dr. Báthori " on this video also goes into that: "The REM phase also called paradox sleeping. This mean that in REM sleep the muscle tone is the lowest and we are almost paralized. So based on the motion detectors this is the "deepest" sleep stage. In contrast the heart rate is more slower and slower as our sleep changes from light sleep to deep sleep, but in REM phase the the heart rate jumps up. Therefore based on the heart rate the REM phase is the "lighest" sleep. "
      (2) Well, I would recommend the Dreem 2 headband, but that is quite large. I would recommend the FitBit Charge series second. It is still a watch, but quite small. Third I would recommend the Oura ring. I would not recommend a sleep mat that goes under the mattress for now.
      Have a great day!!
      Cheers,
      Rob
