something I love about toph's character is that, just because she has a disability doesn't mean she can't fend for herself, and the writers made sure to drive that point hope by putting all of those jokes where the crew forgets she's blind, because of her ability to function just as well as everyone else
My favourite comment about it:
"Toph went from a place wich constantly reminded her that she was blind, to a place where she had to constantly remind everyone that she was blind".
@@franconunez925 Yooooo, how have I never realized this before? That's a great point, I'm going to remember that
toph doesnt really have a disability, though.
she is like the 3rd most powerful human in this world and she is 12.
She is so much more capable than almost every other character.
@@Ockerlord no she still has a disability, lol. just because she is talented in other ways doesnt mean she can, like, for example, read. or suddenly isnt blind
@@Ockerlorddisabled and capable are not antonyms
Toph holding up the entire library is the most badass thing in the entire show, except for the several other even more badass things she's going to be doing.
"The Guru" That is all.
Toph could benchpress the entire planet.
Alicia: "Appa is a fuzzy, sweet, handsome, lovable darling!"
Professor: "The knowledge seekers are described as quite handsome foxes"
Alicia: "THIS GUY FUX FOXES!"
🤣🤣🤣
I didn't even realise she called Appa handsome, that is hilarious 🤣🤣
Alicia fux skybisons! 🤣
Average day on the internet. You can't call an animal cute without someone thinking you want to fuck it.
@@LorgeDelta to be fair. THiers a slight difference between saying somthing is cute and somthing is handsome. can they be used interchangeably to an extent? yes.
but once you get used to hearing certain extent... Hell Its been so long since ive heard the term "pegged" in an innocent way that someone sayed "I guess your gramma never had yah pegged " I was confused and don't wanna hear it said again. 😅
And hell Dont get me started on "thats what she said" Once you start down that path the possibilities are endless. Numerous Strings of words are now unsafe... waiting to be exploited and ruined >:3.
It’s so weird how Sokka is not only the comic relief but also the smartest and most reliable one in the group. Gotta love him
5:00 BO SING SAY JUMP-SCARE
I wanna say thats me but im probably not all that funny
"Okay, I rolled my d6 and today you're getting funny Sokka."
Appa's capture was such an important moment in the series, my god. It really makes the viewer take Appa for granted for the time the gang has him, cuz he's literally the ONLY reason they were able to get to places in a timely manner. Imagine how long it would have taken for them to go the North Pole without Appa.
True, but it always weirded me out how "easy" it was for both the sandbenders and the swampbenders to capture Appa -- it's one of the very few flaws in the immersive and basically perfect story of this show that takes me out of the loop every time I revisit it. Appa is an extremely powerful creature both physically and "magically" (air bending) -- they really shouldn't be able to get him like that with so few people, some ropes/nets and a bit of complementary bending...
@@emmanuel1337 You are underestimating the number factor, yeah a rope wouldn't hold Appa down, but in both cases he was not only outnumbered but also in an element disadvantage, both in the swamp vs the swampbenders and the desert vs the sandbenders fights.
And while many may say he could just airbend or fly off, momo (swamp) and Toph (desert) were mixed in the fight so he couldn't just blindly air bend large attacks, plus since bison are herd animals and Appa is literally the biggest guy on his, there is no way he would just fly off and leave everyone else behind.
@@forsakenjk4 Not really, I'm taking the numbers and circumstances into account, and they were just not enough in both cases to properly explain why Appa didn't avoid being captured (and no, I'm not factoring running away because that wouldn't be needed, he could take them on, and I do agree that he wouldn't also leave his comrades behind).
Appa is said to weight about 10 tons and had numerous big strength feats -- the amount of swamp benders (6, with only 2 actually being shown to meaningfully engage and hold him down with a net mid-run, which is just completely absurd) and sand benders (5?) that did the deed in both cases just wouldn't be even remotely close to enough to physically restrain him, and the same goes for the tools they had (ropes and nets). When taking bending into account, in both cases they didn't even bend at Appa directly, only using it as either a way to pursue him (swamp benders, pushing the boats) or to compliment the physical binding (sand benders, who should've really just lost their legs lol), and even if they did use those more offensively, Appa's air bending is devastating and, along with his strength, could at the very least fend off that small amount of enemies, who most likely would judge him too much trouble to bother fighting more (and no, it wouldn't be so easy for the bison to friendly-fire as you're suggesting in both cases).
Maybe you could make a case for him losing in the swamp if all of the swamp benders were really aggressive and attacked with all they had simultaneously (which they didn't do), since Appa was probably very tired and stressed out to effectively respond and truly not had much room to do his thing with the vines everywhere, but in the desert? He could, for example, fly up from the ground and just keep attacking them from there, while also deflecting anything that was thrown.
So yeah, I think you're the one with the wrong perception here, friend -- overestimating the benders and underestimating Appa...
@@emmanuel1337 Sorry, but I'm with @LibertyGear. Yeah, Appa's powerful, but I think you're overestimating his strength.
A quick search says that it takes anywhere from 20 to 200 kN to rip off a human limb*. 10 tons of mass generates about 90 kN of force in Earth's gravity. So even if you were supporting Appa's _entire weight_ with _just one limb,_ you'd still have only about a 40% chance of losing that limb. But of course the sandbenders each have _two_ legs wrapped in sand, and they're working together to keep him down. So, no, your assertion that they "should've really just lost their legs lol" is not really defensible.
(Aliciaxlife, if you're reading this, this next paragraph _might_ be considered spoiler territory, so you probably want to skip it, or even stop reading entirely.)
And all _that_ is assuming that Appa is actually putting 90 kN of total force on the ropes holding him down, which he isn't. He's fighting his own weight, plus the weight of the saddle and all the gaang's stuff, _plus_ the ropes of the sandbenders. We've never seen him carry more than four teenagers in addition to that (and the one time he carried an adult, he didn't have the saddle, so that cancels out). So I think your estimate of his strength is grossly exaggerated.
Plus, let's not forget that he's an animal. Animals react on instinct**. If Appa was surrounded by predators, his instinct would tell him to fly up to escape. Even if Appa could generate more force using his legs, he's not going to do that, because that would mean getting closer to the predators on the other side. Not to mention that the sandbenders can and do wrap ropes around his legs.
* And I now have "how much force does it take to tear off a human limb" in my search history, so thanks for that.
** Well, unless they've been trained to do something different. But it would take a _lot_ of training to override an animal's instincts, and what are the odds that Aang has even _thought_ about this specific scenario? Plus the fact that such training would make him _more_ vulnerable to actual predators.
@@emmanuel1337 for real it looks like he barely tried to save himself both times
Toph's blind jokes are absolutely lethal.
Sandbenders are just earthbenders, they've just been living in sand for so long that is all they bend. Each element has a "sub-bending", I'm not really sure if sandbending is a sub for earthbending. Like water has ice and plant bending, Fire has lightning, and more sub elements will be shown throughout the show.
The strongest waterbending can only be done under the full moon.
@@frankficcle7081 Spoilers for those who hasn't made it to Legend of Korra:
Incorrect, the strongest waterbenders we've seen (other than the avatar) are Unalaq, Amon, Tarlakk and Ming Hua and none of those benders required a full moon.
@@OutOfPocket-h9e those benders simply don't need the moon to things other waterbenders might need the moon for. they would still gain a boost in power under the full moon, like any waterbender would.
@@madladdie7069 I know that, I'm just saying, the strongest waterbenders we've seen, don't need the moon, they'll still get stronger under a full moon but even without, they're still the strongest waterbenders.
@@OutOfPocket-h9e yeah, this was talking about waterbending itself. when even those three are stronger under a full moon, it's not inaccurate to say that the strongest waterbending is done under it, regardless of who the bender is.
Aang about learning he was once left-handed: "I always knew I was special".
Aang.... you are literally THE avatar. : D
And also one of the youngest Airbending masters in history from what I've read. Iirc the arrows are proof of mastery, which could explain why the other air nomad children in Aang's flashback don't have them but he and the elderly do. And also it explains why he's so good at it.
@@strawcold Well he bypassed full mastery to earn them by inventing the Air Scooter.
@@strawcold he's not like a master of air bending but he technically is. He invented an air technique (the scooter) and that made him a master.
And now we begin the best blind jokes you will ever hear🤣😂🤣
Best blind jokes you will ever see ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Best blind jokes you won’t see coming 🙃
I like to think the professor manages to gain the spirit's respect while down there with his pure love of knowledge for knowledge's sake and is tasked with helping with the library while it's closed off from the world but of course we'll never actually know
You see his skeleton later
Did you see Korra? He starved to death.
@@Pink.andahalf"maybe he lived and survived living in his dream land with the owl"
"Nah son he starved to death, wanna see his corpse?" Lmao
I mean the owl did threaten to mount their heads lol
No he just dies cause there's no food or water
I like to think he lived his whole life down there (it's a mystical library, I'd believe it could slow time inside to accommodate seeking knowledge) until he died of old age, and won shi tong made his body an exhibit in honor of his pure intentions of knowledge for knowledge's sake, surrounded by the first books he read that helped him make his decision to stay.
1) 7:00 you can find the beauty of a living creature and see it as "handsome", if cats and dogs can be cute then I would say that lions and wolves can be handsome.
2) I've been waiting on this episode, I didn't know if posting my anticipation might come off as a spoiler, but Appa being taken hurts me every time I see it. Aang losing the friend he has had for over a century now, the only stable piece of his life just stolen from him. it is a loss I can feel.
3) I am enjoying Alicia getting to see and recognize the development of the characters, Sokka may have started as a sexist goof but his growth [original thoughts redacted because I still don't want to get overexcited and say too much]. the challenges the group have been facing has allowed them to develop and be forged into who they will become.
Lol, Alicia's first reaction to Toph's Terrible Tootsies.
Toph's toes, tragically twisted and terrifically tough, tell tales of torment to those touched by their terrible tenacity
You know. Animals can be seen as beautiful without being INTO them like that alicia. LMAO. But yeah, Sokka is literally the smartest person in team Avatar. And they would be lost without him BECAUSE of his process. But poor ALicia. I don't know if she watches with tissues considering the moments in this show previously.
That and I think the word handsome had a little bit of a different meaning/use historically (I did a quick little search and one of its oldest meanings was apt/clever)
@@strawcold That is also very true. Considering that the show itself is similar to a past Asian culture. They do stick to similar usage of language. Which a modern twist cauer, made in modern times. Agreed entirely.
@@Bargrethsure it uses asian culture but it very much uses modern language
I always feel bad for the owl here, he's just trying to run his library yet always gets taken advantage of
Man, people out here just trying to survive genocidal conquerors and this selfish ass, unnuanced assowl spirit be like, "Nuh-uh, both sides same."
Man, fuck that owl
For real. I can’t help but feel for Wan Shi Tong. He’s seen his knowledge “abused and misused” countless times by greedy and power hungry humans. And now this bunch of kids comes along, lies to his face, and brazenly straight up steals from him. I’d be mad too.
He who knows 10,000 things got knocked out SOKKA STYLE!
The best laid plans and most intelligent reasoning can be easily derailed by one unexpected, dumb idea. Lol
I don't know why, but out of all the ATLA spirits I saw up to this point when I was a kid Wan Shi Tong scared me the most. I didn't even get creeped out by Koh, but that giant talking owl spirit scared the hell out of me when I was younger.
It's the voice and the weird owl head turning thing. Or at least it was for me.
There's a reason the owl is seen by many cultures as an omen of death
The Reason Wan She Tong turns into a dragon at the end is because in western myth owls are seen as symbols of wisdom but in the east, they’re unlucky. Dragons are symbolic of wisdom in the east. So the writers thought they would get the best of both worlds by having the knowledge spirit turn into a dragon at the end.
Fun fact, the Owl is both literally and metaphorically living in an Ivory tower, while also with his head under the sand.
Saka is a normal fighter and non-bender in a team of Master Benders, and he Carries his weight just fine.
I can’t believe it took me this long to realize that the VA for Professor Zei is Raphael Sbaege. AKA Carth Onassis from KOTOR and a million other things
One thing that's great about the way they wrote Toph is that they regularly make jokes about her blindness but it's _never_ at her expense.
Oh...our sweet summer child here is not ready for the emotional turmoil that's about to ensue. Good Luck Alicia!👍
The WATERWORKS is about to begin! He he he 😸
exactly, she's not prepared for it.
There's nothing that will prepare her for what is to come. HAVE THEM TISSUES READY.
I'll have to limit THAT episode to running muted in the background. Once was enough. I know it got an award for accuracy, but it just HURT.
I love how they always keep forgetting Toph is blind
Sokka misunderstood. In desert cultures, using precious water to spit at someone's feet is a sign of respect.
I never understood the "Bright enough to fool you!" line, cause the Owl clearly saw through him.
The whole Sandbending is like Mudbending from how I see it. Mud is Earth and Water, so Earthbenders can bend the earth from the mud while the liquid for the Waterbenders. In case of Sandbending its for both Airbenders and Earthbenders. Both can do the same thing, but each bending a different element from that hybrid element.
after watching Dune I'm convinced that Sand Raider was hitting on Sokka
20:06 You telling this story has send me down a rabbithole of constellations and astronomy that feels nostalgic. Always loved astronomy, but I wasn't very studious as a kid, so I never knew much deeper knowledge. Few friends has any intrest in it. Love to see people have some passion for it, but to be fair, you seem like a passionate person in general. Hope this community has some astronomy peeps.
Watching this as a kid I can safely say yes that owl still haunts my nightmares.
This is in the running for my favourite episode in the entire show
We aren’t getting a Ba Sing Se episode. We are getting a Ba Sing Se arc
The scholar guy sinking with the library was pretty unsettling, even if he wanted to go down with the owl.
Saying an animal is hansome doesn't mean your attracted to it. I think my cat is hansome, he's a majestic little floof.
dude just said handsome little creatures, I called my dog handsome.
It’s interesting how what you said about the Fire Lord being a less interesting villain than Azula, because you’re right, even after you MEET him, you’ll still think Azula’s cooler. But I think that’s what makes him interesting. It’s very much deliberate. He’s definitely more evil than Azula, but I won’t say how and what that means for the story, for spoilers’ sake.
That's the thing about atla that I dislike. It's evil vs good just for the sake of being evil. If Korra has anything better than atla it might be villains and some fight choreography
@@ardel-4964 I mean that is a pretty fair critique, but amongst the black and white villains there is a lot of actually morally grey stuff in there. It was certainly more of a kids show at heart than Korra was, so the deep stuff couldn’t be as in your face.
What you can also call Wan Shi Tong, he who knows 10,000 things, you can call him... Joe
I cried during this episode, too, girl. If you're in tears now, wait until you see the next one. It's freaking heartbreaking, but so good.
What I live about this episode is that it's easily the SECOND most impressive Earthbending feat from Toph in this show
I think its just the same as when you call your dog cute, he was just answering Sokka about the foxes calling them Handsome little fellers, it sounded more like when your talking to a child or pet
tough holding up a huge castle from sinking into the sand is crazy, probably her most epic strength feat, and she doesint have the avatar state power boost!.
The recap wasn't about Zhao it was about the library he went to
Bro. I think she knows now
@@syressx9098 Yes sorry I did that thing where I didn't watch the video before I commented
Pffffft sokka sees a normal fox like not a hybrid animal like very thing else we’ve seen and he’s like “ what kind of animal is that?”
Don't worry about Zhao's demise.
I got to see some prairie dogs at a zoo. So cute.
Sokka's not wrong. He's being strategic.
100 years of war changes priorities. Naturally occurring Ice in the desert? Capitalize on that!
The Previously On is about Zhao plundering secrets from a hidden library, they meet a scholar looking for a legendary library, and Sokka knows they need intel. Oh, and the title. You can guess the basics of where we're going.
The guys chasing Toph don't have a sky bison to shave off the hours, days, and weeks of travel.
Sandbenders are a local adaption of earth benders. Like the water benders in the swamp, they have adapted to their surroundings.
No Brail equivalent yet.
Owls are the sneaky, not the surprised.
10,000 is just a nice sounding number. It's way less that what this library holds.
In fairness, they are not seeking unilateral destruction of the other like Zhao. They are trying tot mend the damage, but that requires the damage to stop. This isn't about destroying the Fire Nation, but stopping their onslaught. I think they could make their case work if they were honest and made the distinction. Also, if Sokka showed actual knot demos, that would be a worthwhile addition. Not the MOST scholarly, but knowing how to tie good knots is good info.
With Toph's seismic sense, the desert is like if someone took glasses away.
Copying the knowledge would be fine. The problems really come down to how they're approaching this.
Nowadays, the idea of a room showing the stars over time isn't that crazy, but this is pure mechanical and inn a time when steam engine are cutting edge.
Cool friend.
Again, I feel if they'd been honest and detailed about the need to level the playing field and counter the Fire Nation before Sozin's Comet, they might have been able to get it honestly.
The almost draconic rage form of the Owl Librarian is quite intimidating. As if Owls weren't already hyper optimized stealth predators.
Aang just lost his oldest friend.
Ah the appa's missing arc.
Time to go on another feels trip
27:42 - NO! Don't mute out "I'm sorry, Appa."! I mean, I still could hear it in my mind but goddamn that lina was so good and well-delivered!... Ah well... things of the far past.
And now we enter some of the most heartbreaking episodes in television. Such incredible writing, I can't fucking get over how great this show is.
Barn owls are super sick so I've always thought Wan Shi Tong was crazy cool
Calling animals handsome is so common with animal lovers I didn’t even register it
When me and my brother first seen this episode we had nightmares that same night lol
I love the moment of Sokka and Aang giggling at buttresses. It's just a reminder that despite everything they're going through, these are still children.
So much for “stealing is wrong”. Thanks, Sokka
I didn't know reading books and acquiring knowledge was stealing.
I kid. I know he was putting books into his sack. Though my assumption was that he was doing that so he could read the stuff in the library at a later date. Not leave with it.
I've just realised that this desert is kinda like sumeru in ATLA with library, professor/scholar, sand, ... and eremites/sand benders
And Eremites literally become sand after you defeat them damn they be getting inspiration from everywhere
One of my favorite quotes from Star Wars: The Clone Wars:
"What difference does it make who starts the war and who finishes it? Neither side is free from fault; it takes two to fight."
That sounds like some zero tolerance bullshit
Won Shi Ton is gonna lose business once the internet is invented.
Here people know Naruto for the pain arc...
these next bunch of episodes until the reunion are just hurtful to watch knowing Appa as we do.
Yeah, remember when Sokka was grilling Katara about stealing from pirates, Guess throw that out a window when stealing from an Owl Spirit who's done nothing to him and even allowed them to access his collection. I love Wan Shi Tong, I'm on his side on this one, he tried to share his knowledge with the physical world as well as further grow his collection only to have his Knowledge Abused
you are gonna love the rest of this book
Personally I’d come back to wan shi tong and praise him in his great library and express sadness that someone destroyed all the archives on fire nation knowledge and maybe even point out who could have done it, I’d think wan would be able to understand that and appreciate the care for his space and that they didn’t break or steal (given Sokka didn’t) they would have. Had an ally at that point
That owl is absolutely terrifying
Your reactions are so cute! I'm loving these
"We promised we wouldn't use this information outside, right?" Uhhh... no, no we didn't. The promise was to not use the knowledge to try and gain power over other humans, to harm them.
The ceo of Nickelodeon in the early 2000’s or so had a foot fetish, idk the specific years but it’s when the nick logo was a footprint. He did a bunch of creepazoid shit, wonder if that one shot of Toph’s feet here was because of him.
29:00 "If that makes him happy, I guess he's better off dead."
Me: ......yeaaaaaaaaah.
I’m so hype for the next few episodes!
This is one of my favorite episodes
Zhao IS dead, that was a flashback to when he visited the library
That's called Sokka style, *LEARN IT!*
I wonder what would've happened if they'd simply told the owl spirit that they were trying to end a war that was threatening both the lives of humans and spirits - as one had already been killed before that girl from the water tribe gave her life to revive it - alike. or if Aang stated he wanted to find a way to defeat the Fire Nation without having to kill its leader. I don't remember if he'd already been told if he has to defeat Ozai. it's been a long time since I've seen avatar and a while since I've watched your reactions to it. so I do apologize if I'm mistaken about anything here
Every time you cry I get more excited for a certain episode
Well here we go... The pain begins
Episode 1 comment: This show can't hurt me... Just wait
She ain't ready for book 3
Another great video like always. Looking forward to the next reaction
If you want a sneak peak for how Korra feels, this episode feels more like a Korra episode than an ATLA episode. Even if I wanted to give details beyond that I couldn't explain, it's just how it feels.
Well you can make that 10.001 things you know
Just saying i would so totally try one of those mango ice cups. Looks and sounds very refreshing
I hope you're ready for pain. Cause pain is all you get for the next few episodes lol.
11:54 He just said Oh no...Anyway
We love Sokka in this house
As a Halo fan, why does the Library always have to hurt so bad!?
So, not all that important, just a fun fact. But apparently I guess Won Shi Tong is voiced by Joe from Princess Diaries, which is still something that sorta makes me giggle a little bit. 😅
Don't worry about Ba Sing Se.
