TFW the editor betrayed us all and didn't include a picture of the dog during the period of time when alicia was talking about her.
A serious treason.
Somebody needs to pay.
He forgor
I ⏪ rewinded twice to make sure I didn't miss it
@@booshkie The dog tax must be collected
sokka rlly drank the respect women juice and instantly became the backbender
I love how Sokka chose the meteor to use as his sword. Because to him, it represents a moment in his life when he had felt useless, but instead of running or ignoring how he felt, he picks that moment as inspiration to never feel that way again. That meteor started his journey to becoming a swordsmaster in the first place, so it was the perfect choice. Also, IT'S A FUCKING SPACE SWORD
1. That is an amazing analysis.
2. SPACE SWORD!!!
*SPACE SWORD!!!*
Also just a perfect example of how his mind works. Always landing on the thing no one would think of on their own, but once he says it, it seems so obvious.
Here's the cool thing. IRL, meteoric iron doesn't make good weapons; ferrous meteorites are mostly iron, but also contain 5-25% nickel, with traces of other elements. However, if you made _steel_ out of a meteorite with just the right percentage of nickel and the right trace elements, it would be an incredible blade, better than any that could ordinarily be bade back then. You want about 8-10% nickel, along with half a percent or so of tungsten, chromium, molybdenum, vanadium, and manganese-all of which can be found in meteorites. The result would be essentially a modern steel alloy, with superior flexibility, toughness, corrosion resistance, and edge retention.
And such a sword would not be destroyed by falling several thousand feet...
So you're saying that the Space Sword, if made in real life, actually would survive the fall that it went through in the series finale? @@windwalker5765
In the commentary they revealed that if Sokka’s fight against his master had been for real then Sokka would have been killed in less than a second. Instead his master was more focused on teaching Sokka and testing his skills.
Well that is just locgical and obvious, Piandao is a renown master Sokka barely started training with a sword.
He used to look down on bending so much because of his insecurities...
Now he's been truly humbled...
"Pride is not the opposite of shame, but its source. True humility is the only antidote to shame."
- Iroh.
Another fun production fact. Nickelodeon wanted the crew to give ang some armor for selling more toys and the armor Ang had was a “ if you want armor we’ll give you armor” moment.
*Aang

@@ThePfeffernusse “Ung” M.Night.Shamalamadingdong
Fun fact: Piandao trained Zuko is swordsmanship as well. Really explains how Zuko is so skilled with blades when you see his master here.
Next episode: Beach Party! How much will Princess Alicia, the beautiful and clever, cry in this episode?
I'm glad we have this episode since it addresses how Sokka feels about being the only non bender on team avatar. Plus, Space Sword is the best kind of sword
Sokka is not the only non bender in team avatar, momo can’t bend too
Nah Sokka is a back bender
@@xiikko what are you on about in like episode 4 we saw momo earthbend
@@xiikko I am not so sure, those ear muscles are probably strong, but no way he flies that swiftly and gaining so much height with just gliding, maybe he isn't as good of an airbender as appa or aang but he must be able to move some air
Space sword is great and all, but Boomerang transcends realities
Gotta love the final reveal. It means nothing to the characters but as the audience you get hyped.
And another detail that I just noticed this video - the outdoor area in Piandao's place where Sokka had most of his training has a white lotus tile as the design on the ground.
He's not hiding his ties, but they're also not something that anyone who isn't in the know is going to even notice.
As someone who used to teach martial arts, i ADORE this episode. One of the things we always tried to impart in our students, from the very beginning, is humility. And some of the best students ended up being the ones who came at it somewhat like Sokka (granted, hes also tinted with a lot of self-doubt). Not the flashy, "look how good i am," types. And seeing PianDao actively cultivating those strengths in Sokka, and not shoving him into a one-size-fits-all mold is just a bonus that im happy to see. Cuz again. It was how we tried to be as teachers.
Fun fact, its never mention in the show but Zuko was also trained by master Piandao
Fun Fact: The actor who plays Sokka's master (Piandao) is Robert Patrick. The man who terrified audiences as the T1000 in Terminator 2: Judgement Day.
This episode is why I consider Sokka as the definitive example of a comic-relief character. He can have his moments when he needs to and it never feels out of character (Seriously, you think the minions from Despicable Me would be able to carry a story like this?!).
Yes. Yes they can.
@@Slipperyslab*LOUD INCORRECT BUZZER*
Fun fact: the splotch shape Toph makes is the old Nickelodeon logo, from back when Avatar first aired
The armor was a studio mandate strictly so they could make a canon "Armored Aang" toy. Also, Piando is voiced by Robert Patrick, the T-1000. I love the detail that Piandao is still teaching Sokka even in their fight. You can see the white lotus on the hilt of Sokka's sword. And the splat at the end that Toph bends the meteor piece into was at the time, Nickelodeon's logo.
Editor-san not putting up a picture of Lexi the Doggo was almost as big of a betrayal that Zuko did to Iroh 😭
Aang might be the avatar but in my eyes sokka is the group leader, he is the one who plans things and makes sure everyone plays their role right
*Turn back all ye who enter, Spoilers beyond this point*
The gang do more or less fit into the Five Man Band trope in storytelling.
Aang- the Leader
Katarra- the Heart
Sokka- the strategist/ the Comic Relief
Toph- the Tough Guy/Gal
And Zuko- who kinda breaks the mold by more being the Villain turned Good Guy vs being the Lancer/Anti Hero.
The Strategist will almost always act as secondary leader due to how important they are to the team, usually because the strategist is used to help when the MC doesn't fill the archtypical Leader role.
@@joelsasmad oh yeah im aware of that trope, it's just it doesn't really fit. Zuko is supposed to be the Lancer for the 5 man band to be complete but he doesn't fill the role at all. He definitely fits in the sixth ranger trope perfectly but thats also weird since hes the 5th and final member of the team.
@@DevilSlayr Doubt she will read this but you should put the last after Spoiler warning, you know just in case.
@@AugustoEL donzo but honestly its either to late or its pointless really.
@@DevilSlayr yeah but it never hurts to be cautios.
Sokka might be the most talented martial artist in the crew. He's mastered the non bending marital arts of the Water Tribe, Earth Kingdom, and Fire Nation. If there was someone around to teach him Air Nomad arts, he'd probably master that too.
The Air Nomads didn't have martial arts. They had no military.
I mean, he did master the airship slice...
@@Celestia282 Well then, I would love to hear your explanation for all the dead soldiers in that room with monk Gyatso. It seems to me like he Took their breath away if you know what I mean. lol!! So they can definitely fight in some way.
Since the Air Acolytes existed in TLOK, there is a chance that Aang could have given some lessons on Air Nomad martial arts to Sokka if he was asked to.
It isn't mentioned in this episode but Piandao was the son of talented Firebenders who abandoned him when he wasn't one.
thats good to know
Thing is,in some story,Pian Dao(sword master) killed 100 of fire benders at once, when they had come to his home to jail him, because he was declared as deserter. He actually that powerful
Yeah he killed so many the fire nation decided to just leave him be.
They were all like "Fuck this, you're under house arrest then."
They were like "You know what, this is to much of a husel just don`t kill any soldier and we let you be"
I had no idea, and I love that.
Zuko was also trained by Piandao which is why he’s good with two swords, however this is only stated in the comics.
Which comic was this stated in? Its been a while since I have read those.
@@rudrodeepchatterjeeThe comic where he and Sokka duel with their swords. Zuko mentions to Sokka how Piandao trained him as a kid.
@@the_oc_maniac8972 thanks.
If I remember correctly, Piandao is based off of the person who the Avatar production hired as their resident martial artist expert to reference all of the shows martial arts.
no picture of the doggy 😔
Sokka is my favorite character in Avatar.
He is the most special of them all.
Thanks for the reaction Alicia. I will watch the rest of your Avatar reactions.
Sokka's getting his sword, Iroh's getting shredding, Alicia's reacting like nobody's business and I'm here for it.
The armor aang was wearing was the writers response to some fans suggesting that he should wear some armor while fighting
More specifically, it was in response to a request from Nickelodeon to feature armor for Aang that could potentially be used for action figures. The creators rejected this and parodied the idea of Aang wearing impractical armor in this gag.
Piandao was like “Okay, a young non-bender asked for training. His name is clearly Water Tribe, I don’t remember the Fire Nation having Water Tribe colonies. He introduced 3 of his friends. One has blue eyes, she’s most likely also from the Water Tribe. They brought with them a big-ass meteorite, they have an earthbender with them. There’s a blind girl and a kid wearing his school uniform’s belt as a headband. As far as I know, the Avatar’s team consists of wandering kids: Water Tribe siblings, a blind earthbender, and a master airbender Avatar. Could the kid with the headband be hiding his airbender tattoos?”
Sussy children if you ask me.
I love how Iroh is constantly playing chess while everyone else is playing checkers.
30:15 I really love how you can see each benders different style in just their stance during this frame.
"If you deny yourself the opportunity to learn, you're doing yourself a disservice." That is such a bar. I need that quote on a t-shirt. Very well put!
Sokka be like " You were there all along. My guiding moonlight. "
Toph had those giant... mole-like things, so she had multiple proper masters even without counting the one assigned by her parents.
Speaking of Toph... do you think she's aware of blushing? She can't see so the only way she'd know something like that exists would be if she overheard someone speaking about it. And with how sheltered she lived to the point of isolation there's a good chance nobody ever did.
The Phai Sho tile they got at the end probably serves as a token of sorts, so if they need help in the future, they can show that tile and get help from the white lotus. I really love how this episode really does a lot to prove just how important Sokka is to the team.
Nicelodeon released some backstory for Pien Tau (hope I got the name right). He also fought as a fire nation soldier but quitted and build this house in the mountains. The fire nation declaired him a desserter and sent a hundret soldiers to arrest him. But he single handedly defeated them all and the fire nation gave up bringing him back.
You're watching so many good shows right now I love it
a fun fact: that waterfall at 18:55 is based off on Gullfoss (literally "golden falls"), a real waterfall in Iceland.
In fact, the animators drew inspiration from Icelandic nature when designing the Fire Nation natural landscape, but Gullfoss is the most blatant of those inspirations because of being so iconic and quite famous.
I’m guessing you didn’t notice because you either didn’t watch Nickelodeon as a kid or maybe the symbol is different in Canada, but the last shape Toph makes with the meteorite was the Nickelodeon logo at the time.
I love how this ep pretty definitively says "The White Lotus supports the Avatar and ending the war."
Sokka is a versatile warrior.
He got a machete, a club (everyone forgors the club), trusty boomerang, and A SPACE SWORD
Man you’re going through this banger of a season quickly. At this rate you’ll be finished in a week or 2, probably feeling incomplete once it’s over. Watching your reaction to such a great series is a joy
If that’s the case, I’d suggest continuing with “The Legend of Korra” (ATLA sequel series) or jumping into Record of Ragnarok
I mention Record of Ragnarok because I’ve seen basically no one react to it. I’m sure people have but I haven’t found them
Korra may have its flaws but god damn do I ever love tomboys
@@dragonfell5078 there’s no shortage of tomboys in LoK. The only issue is who to choose: Korra or Kuvira
You don't see anyone reacting to RoR because it's absolute dogshit. I thought everyone was in the same page about this. Season 1 was universally panned and ripped apart. I'm honestly kind of offended you would even mention it in the same breath as Avatar XD.
"He who asks a question is a fool for a moment, bet he who does not ask a question remains a fool for the rest of his life."
What's even better is that the show will confirm Sokka's bending abilities later.
The funny thing about the Lee comment was that Zuko used that as his cover name in the earth kingdom lol
What I love most about this episode is that Master Piandao chose to train Sokka due to his humility. You can tell from how he talks when Sokka first shows up that he's used to the people who want to train with him being very prideful, and by extension, not very likely to be very receptive. He prompts Sokka a bit guessing that Sokka had traveled a long way from the 'little village' where he was the best swordsman, and when Sokka says that he's been all over the world, Piandao literally says "here we go" in an exasperated tone, so when Sokka says that he knows he has a lot to learn, he's pleasantly surprised.
Something I love about this show is how real it is about its martial arts. The line about the knowledge of the sword is something I heard from my sensei's as I trained but they said "the way of the fist is something that all have knowledge of"
Fun little easter egg, when Toph bends the space metal in the end, the second figure (the splosh) is actually the Nickelodeon logo...
Sokka is the best unsung hero of team Avatar. He doesn't get notice until it actually hits. But he's still one of my top favorites. They truly would be lost without him.
Now as for the master, they actually are speaking truth with him. having practiced it myself, can agree. This was always one of my favorite episodes.
The drip, the game, the brain and now a cool space sword. This truly is Sokka's final form
No his final form is when he wears the wolf armor
@@Mert_Yanik You're right
Meteorites have a lot of iron in them, because most of the rock parts burn off while they’re falling. So Toph can sort of hybrid metal/earth bend it into all sorts of weird shapes. It’s pretty cool.
Toph was taught to throw hands by literal wild animals. It only stands to reason that she'd be such a beast at earth bending.
Yo Alicia! Hope you're well! In this episode when the Sokka's teacher said "There's a million Lee's" this is a direct call back to Zuko, his alias was Lee while traveling.😂
Not to mention he met another Lee and felt he couldn’t use that alias anymore. Remember the kid who was in the village of bully earth kingdom soldiers?
Sokka has come a long way since season 1. Him admitting he doesn't know his worth to Master Piandao is so powerful.
No spoilers, just a warning: ep 8 + ep 9 of season 3 are probably the scariest in the entire show, so I don't recommend watching them too late in the day or in the dark, I don't really expect you to get nightmares or anything, but I thought I'd give you a heads up nonetheless...
I’m not sure if there’s ever been an official statement on it, as I didn’t really follow LoK, but I do know there’s a fair few of us who think that Sokka became a member of the White Lotus sometime after ATLA ended, and that this moment was sort of foreshadowing it. Piandao didn’t HAVE to give them that tile, as Sokka and the gAang didn’t know what it meant, but he gave it anyway.
Fun fact Sokka’s sword master also taught Zuko sword fighting
Master Piandao's appearance is based on Sifu Kisu, the martial-arts consultant for the show who designed all the bending styles. Pian Dao means "Slashing Saber."
Our princess, Alicia, clever and beautiful!
Is thirsthy for Iroh (who desn't) and realized by herself something about a certain lotus tile...
That sword master was voiced by the actor who played the T-1000 in Terminator 2.
I know the feeling. There was a brief period of time between getting back from deployment and getting backing into school, where watched my sister's dog for a few months straight while she was at work.
Fun Fact: Something that's never told to us in the show is that Pian Dao is the same person that taught Zuko how to use a sword.
Hello, sword buff here.
The specific sword type Piandao uses and makes is typically called a 'jian', which is an ancient Chinese design. Excellent design overall. Good one-handed straight blade.
Also, swords have been made with meteorite iron in the past. Katanas often had some folded in amongst their layers.
Fun fact: The “smudge” Toph makes
at the end of the episode is actually
the Nickelodeon logo 🧡💚
13:37
Alicia spitting bars! Moments like these are one of the many reasons I stay to watch! This message is so important
Sokka.
Bender of backs, builder of swords.
An old philosophy from Sun Tzu: Appear strong when you are weak and weak when you are strong.
If I'm not mistaken Master Paindao's design is based off of Sifu Kisu the guy who helps with the fight choreography of the show.
Can't wait to hear about Alicia's Joseph and Iroh dilf fantasy
Her reaction when we get to "welcome to old people camp"
@@razgriz2276 oh damn forgot about that!
I had a teacher named Mr. Pflum who taught automotive technology in highschool and he said something that's stuck with me all my life; "It's not about knowing everything, it's about knowing where to look for the information."
Both times Alicia saw Iroh ripped, and she said “shhhhre-(ded)”, i keep expecting her to say “shhhhreked”
There is a couple's reaction channel that had reacted to Avatar and for the most part they had really well structured opinions. Except this episode. One of them basically said "yeah Sokka should feel bad because he never contributes anything and I will die on this hill saying it." They actually turned off comments because I am sure so many people were outraged.
3:08
Editor be like "I have heard nothing!" xD
Sun Tzu’s art of war. If you are strong, make you enemy think you are weak
"There's a million Lee's," is actually also a callback from when Zuko was on the run. Remember he called himself Lee? Good thing Earth Kingdom people didn't know common Fire Nation names.
Lee is a universally common name in the universe. Like John, or Mary, or (internationally) Mohammed.
@@nuclearbirds Oh? Is this comics or commentary confirmed info?
@@LadyTanglepath Well, Lee is also the name of the kid in “Zuko Alone” so we have at least one other earth kingdom example.
@@nuclearbirds Oh yeah, I remember him! That's correct. :>
Fun fact, the "smudge" that Toph makes at 32:01 was actually the shape of the Nickelodeon logo at the time.
Captain America. You describe Captain America. Not a perfect soldier/warrior, but a GOOD MAN. Plus Sokka is basically the Captain America AND the Iron Man of team Avatar.
I like the attention to detail that Toph doesn't react to the meteor until it hits the ground.
Alicia, that's a meteorite - a bunch of minerals and metals.
A comet - is big chunk of ice with gases.
One thing I can't help but imagine went into Sokka's thought process about how he was the only non-special guy in the group was the Drill mission in Ba Sing Se. All he really did was try and hype up his teammate (which eventually got so annoying that Katara waterbent some mud at him to shut him up), but it felt like it was the only way he _could_ contribute to that particular mission. Yes he is beneficial to the group in other non-obvious ways, but I think it felt like what Sokka lacked was the ability to produce immediate results in a crisis or contribute anything substantial on an individual basis in combat.
To quote, I believe it was Socrates, “I only know for sure that I know nothing.” There is no shame in admitting you don’t know something. Humility is a key trait to hone, you only accrue enemies by being a snobby know-it-all.
The comment that Sokka's master makes about the sword being an extension of your own body is actually very true. When you're using any kind of device or tool, your mental self-image shifts to include that tool.
The Back Bender has a Space Sword now
32:02 Well ackshually earth comes from the word eorþe from Old English which means dirt, soil, dry land, ground, or even things like country or district, and soil may aswell just be small, tiny particles of rock with life and organic matter mixed with it, not to mention ground or dry land can be made of rock and this meteorite is basically just space rock, a rock from space. In other words, this means that Sokka is right and that this is space earth cry all you want Katara you cannot comprehend the space earth.
The RiZZ bender deserves more respect. He's a stratigist and a swordsmen
Don't worry prison guard, Swole Iroh isn't real, he can't beat you up
Swole Iroh: SOON...
Am I going crazy? Cause I think I remember this master being the one who taught Zuko too, right? Is this something we learn later?
I think its mentioned in sids material or in directors commentary that Pian Dao did teach zuko sword fighting, its why he's so good at it.
Alicia , your like own own type of master. Giving us life lessons, history of your self and great advice
There is a surprising amount of wisdom in the phrase "I don't know"
Hope treatment and everything is going well. Back before I was born my mother had uteran cancer. They were able to remove the cancerous tissue and it never came back, but the doctors told her she'd never be able to have kids as a result of the scar tissue.
Fast forward a bit and I ended up being born, and about 6 years later my sister was born. After that my mom was happy to have two kids (especially when she thought she'd never be able to) and decided she didn't wanna take any chances with accidentally having a third, so she got the tubes tied. 😅
Dang this rewatch is making me realize how some of these episodes where earlier than I remember
