- With the fifth season of CW's Arrow about to premiere, I decided to review a Green Arrow comic for tropes. So I set up a target in the woods with various Green Arrow runs and shot arrows at it.

That crossbow looks like it has a 21st century firing pin.
Extra deadly ;)
Your crossbow selection idea was genius
And it was fun for me!
I imagine Steve Ditko reading this storyline and crying tears of rage into is worn copy of the Fountainhead...
Your bolt picked the absolute best run. Denny O'Neil is the reason I started writing in the first place. Knocked this one out of the park.
As far as someone being called "slapper," I'm from the backwoods of the deep south. Stupid nicknames like Scooter and Boog exist, I don't think a Slapper is too far fetched
It's a fantastic run. It's of its time but it works really well. The characters grow and the art is great.
I've never been too fond O'Neil's writing but I do see the reasons for the popularity of this run. For me, there's too much of Green Arrow's standing around making speeches instead of getting to the nuts and bolt's of various situations through character interaction. Still, I give O'Neil high marks for raising the bar of comic book writing, which had been held down by The Comics Code since the mid 50s! He paved the way for the MARV WOLFMANs and DON McGREGORs who would follow him and I thank him for that!
Slapper isnt that far fetched, when i went to a west virginia high school i hung out in a group where 3 guys went by roach/shaggy, boobie, and slappy.
And this run is what got me into green arrow when i picked it up at a comic stores back issue section arpund 2002 the art is iconic, and when i read it i overlooked the depowered lantern because i love the team up
Ur not a female…ur not from the UK. Lol 😅
You'd think that Hal, being the more law-n-order of the two, would *also* be upset about a trial being rigged in order to have someone killed.
As groundbreaking as this run was, it was written at the expense of making Hal look like a complete idiotic jerk.
Actually it makes perfect sense, because to people like that a trial being rigged is them blindly trusting the law.
"after 5 minutes of hell" that line had me laughing uncontrollably! Amazing
I love how he looks super menacing in his Arrow costume but then he talks like his normal super nice and happy self
I liked Green Lantern/Green Arrow a lot, but it relied on Denny O'Neil abandoning everything John Broome had done on the book for the 11 years prior to the O'Neii/Adams run. Broome had written GL as a romantic who tried to do what he believed to be right, since 1959, which sort of made the whole series discordent.
Happy to see Longbow Hunters on your target. Grell's run is by far my favorite. Still, hard to argue with O'Neil's run as an important run.
Neil McCrea Grell’s run is my favorite too as it is the one from which the Show takes its influence.
Grells run sucked.
D.C. Comics should bring back this series. It would be really effective in our current polarized society .
I think it would resonate with a large audience. But I also think the big two are probably a little too gunshy to produce such an intentionally politcal book.
Our society has always been polarized and the media is why.
JOE SANCHEZ and the right wing is a hotbed of intellectualism?
@@HiDefHDMusic The right wing is stifled in modern comics. I still think they're f****** crazy but I find social justice currently is so inclined to outrage. I find the current era of comics pitiful and to have an obsession with ideology. If you don't think a certain way you are an enemy. It is sad to be honest. We lost great artist at DC like Ethan van sciver for this reason.
Kyd Jhesus everything about comics stemming from the idea of "superpowers" (US, USSR Cold War language) comes from an inherently right-wing viewpoint. Vigilante justice, independent actors committing acts of war unilaterally, the whole idea of the "superman", none of these ideas are remotely left wing. Superheroes were literally invented as pro war propaganda for soldiers during wartime.
When has superman or captain America ever seized the means of production and redistributed wealth to the citizens? They're super-soldiers fighting super-wars against a collection of unambiguously evil super-terrorists in the name of the USA. The idea that there's some sort of left-wing ideology taking hold in modern comics is absolutely absurd.
HahA! I was a fan of Neal Adams. I read a few of the Lantern-Arrow series back in the day and just never realized how absurd some of the story elements were. Loved this vid. Thanks!
Absurd but certainly progressive for its day and still super entertaining.
The art of Neal Adams is *really* incredible.
Hands down my favourite Western illustrator.
Meanwhile..... on the other side of the forest, a bow hunter sits in a deer blind thinking "Wow. 9 1/2 hours and not a single deer."
Hmm.... In the woods with a crossbow, deer all over the place, and I'm guessing no hunting license.... Nah, nothing could go wrong there... lol
You losing your bolts is endearing and hilarious. Love yer channel muscleman
my Favourite Writer and Artist I don't think DC comic got any better than when these two worked together
It's sad that the best adaptation of Green Arrow is the Justice League Unlimited cartoon, not even the TV shows can do his character justice 😭
HahA! I love how "SPOCK!!" was a sound effect for a punch.
I was a Neal Adams fan. I have an original ink drawing of Batman from Adams.
"was"?
Love the Dylan catch @10:26 - I agree about grounding the comic for the readers at the time! Keep up the great reviews Chris
When well written, Green Arrow feels a lot like Captain America during Marvel's first Civil War: someone who stands for the ideals behind the system instead of for the system itself. When poorly written, he is even more of an anarchist than V from V for Vendetta. As for the thing with the power ring, it was canon at the time that its charge only lasted 24 hours. Kinda funny that an alien device from a collective of races that despise Earthlings has an arbitrary time limit that matches an Earth day, don't you think?
11:17 Do they ever explore the possibility that maybe his misgivings, or lack of conviction, when *charging his ring* has anything to do with why it sometimes fizzles out just when he needs it most? A ring that channels his, what was it, *will power*?
I'd love to see your take on Neal Adams on DEAD MAN.
So glad this run got picked. The Neal Adams art and cool ideas 💕💕💕💕.
I met Neal Adam at a Con and he autographed that iconic cover for me. He was a very nice guy as well.
Note to self: Put GPS trackers on all my arrows (not that I have any ^^)
They have nocks that glow in the dark as well as ones with LEDs
Hahaha I expected those deer to try to stamp you out 😂
This kind of team-up with a huge power disparity is hilariously parodied in a trio of "Angel Summoner and BMX Bandit" comedy sketches by Mitchell and Webb.
It’s strange seeing one of the earlier green lanterns. To me John Stewart was always green lantern.
You gotta love the great outdoors!
was that part of the omega red uniform?
7 of 9 from Star Trek. The holographic Doctor from Star Trek. Odo from Star Trek. Maybe also Bashir and Worf from Star Trek?
Ah yes, the All in the Family of DC Comics
That was a great shot wow
I wish people could act like GL and GA more in these times
12:26 Forgot the contortion!
I’m not going to lie I was expecting the issue where Green Arrow dresses up as a Native American folk hero here.
Later on in the series Green Lantern referred to charging his ring as " a chore " to take care of.
is GA book selling that well? you should do jeff lemire and andrea sorrentino's run and see if any of arrow's tropes are still the same
John was my first Green Lantern much love
This is the funniest intro of yours I've ever seen
great video!
Thanks for the kind words.
Why not the Jack Kirby Green Arrow??
Let me explain what's going on with Hal's powers. In a previous issue (as a matter of fact it might be the issue right before this one) lantern and arrow are going after this criminal and in an effort to get away he puts Ollie in this situation where he's about to die. So Hal has to choose whether to catch the guy or save Ollie. Hal obviously chooses to save Ollie but that angers the guardians. So they bring him back to oa and as they are admonishing him for not thinking of the greater good Ollie jumps in and starts yelling at the guardians about how they don't know what it's like to be a normal person in the real world. At that point ganthet (who's the guardian you see riding with them in the truck) is like "he might have a point. I should go back to earth with them to see what life is like for normal humans." So the rest of the guardians agree and allow Hal and Ollie to leave so that they can take ganthet on a road trip across America. But this issue of Hal disobeying orders and not thinking of the greater good isn't completely resolved yet so the guardians reduce Hal's powers because he's still on this sort of "disciplinary period". So that's why Hal isn't as powerful as he should be during this "hard traveling heroes" run.
Drug use - pro or con - has no place in comics.
They did an issue or two on it, and sprained their hands by patting themseves on the back for it.
Besides, Tony Stark was the first one to drink from that well, anyway.
What? The 1950s Jack Kirby run wasn't even an option?? Or the non-Kirby Arrow and Speedy as Batman and Robin knockoffs? :-/
chaotic good + lawful good
got a green arrow question they have ra's al goul in arrow was ras al goul a cross over in the arrow comics and the batmaqn comics
If these stories would be published in the present people would call it JSW propaganda.
lacrarte zorok Diversity and Comics would have a field day with it.
lacrarte zorok you’re not right about that
Sjw propaganda is shallow and preachy
Green arrow has always been a liberal character
While it might be picked apart and compared to today’s standards of sjwness
Even Chris said it’s progressive to have a black character that doesn’t make it a bad book or even a sjw book
It shows 2 characters with different beliefs working together
The issue with SJW content is that it's preachy and shallow, with no real message beyond an almost ignorant viewpoint. Comics can be incredibly progressive and liberal, and be nothing like SJW content. A lot of people that cry out SJW content overreact a lot. But on the other scale, so do the defenders
Nah. Not if it was handled properly. Covering social issues isn't the problem these days, it's the narrow range of issues they cover and how they moralize and ham-handedly force them down the reader's throats. Plus so many of the writers these days are just garbage.
@@MrThankman360 I think that part of the issue is that people make money and build careers out of complaining about stuff. SJWs using beloved characters and franchises to push their agendas is an easy thing to complain about, so it's an easy way to get a paycheck.
The other part is that quite a few of these writers are young and use Twitter, so they get into arguments on Twitter (and other sites) when people inevitably go "Ugh, I hate that you introduced an African character who's also a lesbian into this comic book," and they fire back with "Well fuck you, you racist and homophobic piece of shit."
Really, the quality of the so-called SJW-stories and the actual SJW-agendas (whatever they are) become completely irrelevant when placed inside the context of everything going on around them.
They really need to put together a trade of the GA back ups from Detective and worlds finest by Cavelerie and Von Eeden. Those stores really capture the mood of Green Arrow and are way less “forced” than this run that makes Hal into jerk and ignorant idiot imo
its a friggin piece of paper, what did you expect?
I've always liked NEAL ADAMS' artwork but I've never been too crazy about DENNY O'NEIL's stuff. Some of his Batman stories were good but with his this series, I got the feeling he would have been happier writing short stories or novels or anything besides super hero
comics! There were still a heck of a lot more magazines back then why didn't he try to submit stories for those? I have a compilation of these stories and that frustration seems to leap from those beautifully drawn pages!
Was Chris wearing his Omega gear in that segment? Was his identity know by then or am I doing what would have been some solid detective work if this was 5 years ago?
I was wearing it but hadn’t “revealed” anything publicly. Good eye!
Just after this, O'Neil & Julius Schwartz de-powered Superman. O'Neil kind of preferred the idea of heroes at the :Charlton Action Hero" level.
Buy the hard book of green lantern green arrow you will love it
Bolt goes through target and kills Bambi's mother
NOOOOO!!! 😭😭
That 1st buck was a beauty. Link to the address? Thanks for your great channel!!
Deers are cute! :D
GA, from a Bat Joke to the most liberal of super heros , kind of weird since they played him so much like a rich batman type wth all the gadgeets then turn him into a total oposite the the Bat
You should of done the Jeff Lemire run lol
I have the hard cover book of green lantern green arrow it is a must read for everyone
Neal Adams drawing GA in an impossible stance for the shot at the machine gun - not that we needed anymore tropes, but there is one more.
Really enjoying the channel
Dios mio! *draws a cross on his chest*
A LIBERAL?!?!
Those male bucks can get very aggressive sometimes.
GL/GA..... the A-TEAM of the 70s!!!!!
The reason Green Arrow worked when he was retconned from a "Batman with arrows" into a liberal activist is that most of the writers who used him didn't use his stories as a tool to preach. Especially in GL/GA and Justice League, sometimes Ollie was right and sometimes he wasn't, but he was true to his character either way without the stories becoming mere vessels to promote the liberal agenda. It's why his ongoing feud with Hawkman worked well, though Katar Hol was never overtly political except when it was needed as a counterpoint to Ollie. I'm honestly not confident that most of today's writers are either competent or mature enough to balance things in such a way.
don’t feel too bad pretty sure green arrow looses his arrows all the time
Fear the deer
U found Earth? Sorry. Cj
Johnny Silver hand
How, exactly, did Oliver Queen come into his fortune? Isn't he, like a Bruce Wayne-level millionaire?
Yups
Nothing on Dan Green? JRJR/Dan Green fan. Cj
I only ever liked the first season of Arrow; (in spite of being a Green Arrow fan; they completely lost the characters sense of humour and left wing rebeliousness) after that ; he became a batman knock-off; even stealing his villians later on. Just how many flashbacks can one man have from an island? It got ridiculous - it could be been spun off into its own show. and why can they never get Black Canary right?
Everyone's giving this story credit it doesn't deserve. GL is just made to look like an idiot the whole time, and with no moral bakcbone. GA is always in the right and always sure of his beliefs.
Agreed. This is green Arrow’s book, at the expense of character assasination of Hal Jordan.
green laterns are pushovers lol they always show them getting steam rolled.
While I applaud the artwork and adressing social issues, I myself cannot get into the dialogue. Too much prose and bizzare lingo attempting to be hip.
Bizarre* - I wonder how much time you had to invest in order to check your spelling.
Or perhaps that's the way the word is used by hipsters nowadays...?
@@Changetheling weird fuck
I really don’t like “progressive” comics nowadays.
Overly preachy, narcissistic, morally pestering, compromising on good stories and character development to give way to pushing an agenda.
Sorry bro
Very bad story.
