To be fair, you can't use an image of Supergirl and Power Girl in trying to prove a point about Bagley's faces looking too similar. This is probably the only case where they should. They are the same character Kara Zor-El from different universes.
My favorite of Mark's work was the ultimate stuff. I think it was the combination of the lineart, but also the coloring. I love the shiny look, like how it is in the thumbnail.
Yeah, he is. (Short answer) 😂 my favorite spidey artist from the nineties!! I love that i can see an art and instantly tell its his art. I think him and Ron Frenz dont get enough appreciation ❤
I do have a soft spot for Mark Bagley. I did like Erik Larson’s great run on The Amazing Spider-Man after the great run by Tod McFarlane and felt he was a good fit for the title.
I loved it when you said “a criticism of Bagley’s is that his faces often look too similar,” and used a panel of Supergirl and Power Girl. Who are basically the same person.
Yes, and Ultimate MJ and Jean Grey are virtually indistinguishable when the X-Men come to visit. Also hated the constant exposed midriffs on teenage girls AT SCHOOL in those comics.
@@robertdullnig3625 To his credit though, the girls never felt sexualized. The exposed midriffs seemed less 'sexy' and more his own shorthand for "cool kids".
Mark Bagley was the artist on what I consider to be my first comic ever, and to this day, he’s still my favorite Spider-Man artist. Met him at NYCC last year, and it was really one of the coolest moments ever
@@talizorah2282 yeah I was about 8 or 9 when the maximum carnage and clone sagas got underway. Never paid any attention to credits back then. But as the cover images flashed by in the video I realized I read and own a lot of his 90s stuff. By the 2000s I had moved from superhero stuff to aliens and predator comics, and then into weird goth indies
I knew Mark’s nephew as a friend back in the early 1990’s and got to meet Mark at his home studio. Mark was working on the cover for Venom issue #1 and had tons of magazines open to different pages. I remember he told me that when he has to draw lots of bystanders in the panels, he runs out of ideas for their faces and clothes so he picks them out of magazines to use for more diversity. Awesome nice guy who is as humble as he is talented.
As someone who’s currently in high school, one of my favorite things about Ultimate Spider-Man is that all the “dated” clothing of the teenagers in the books actually still seem fitting. 90s clothing is coming back in a big way. I see kids all the time walking around with Long button up shirts a lot of girls also wear overalls a lot. It’s cool to see how some things never change.
I never stopped reading comics....ever but Bagley definitely helped me go further down the rabbit hole,so to speak of comics and I loved his work on The New Warriors,The Amazing Spider-Man and the Ultimate Spider-Man comics.
13:46 To be fair to Bagley... Aren't power girl & super girl literally the same person just from different worlds 😂. So if any characters end up look exactly alike it would be them In any case Mark's work is consistently great, since he stays on a book it gives it a manga like sense of consistently. I would love to see Bagley do more grounded stories, he might do well on a romance title, or even something magical but without capes
My first exposure to Mark Bagley work was The New Warriors comic and love it. Later his Ultimate Spider-Man and I think too it was his best. Good luck with the Clone Saga stuff , hope you can do it.
Bagely also worked on the comic adaptation of Robocop 2! Aside from creating Carnage, lets face it, he's easily one of the greatest Venoms artist of all!
Bagley has left his mark in the industry, that's for sure! I like to say that an artist's own style can almost be like a fingerprint and an identifier. I remember when I was in high school,my art teacher said that she could pick out a drawing by me on a wall full of drawings.Same thing for me with Mark Bagley(along with so many other artists),as soon as I see the particular art,I know that Mark Bagley's the one who did it.
Ultimate Spider-Man got me into comics back after the first Raimi film. I've always loved that original run and Bendis's continuation with Miles (at least until Cataclysm, I didn't like Peter coming back to life).
Bagley's greatest weakness is drawing faces at an angle. The eyes are often in the wrong positions. I otherwise love his art, but that has always bothered me!
In terms of Bagley's place in history, I think he's similar to Jim Aparo or Joe Staton. They are not the kind of spectacular artists who ever became the "hot" artist of the day, but they were solid draftsmen who enjoyed extended periods of major sales success and quietly turned out iconic versions of many classic characters. I'd much rather have a guy like one of them on a book for years than a flash-in-the-pan who's hot today, but who is out of the business in just a few years.
It's the old "Artist for kids" & "Artists for grown-ups" differentiation, I think. Kids are easy to impress with detailed, action-pumped drawings. Kids don't look at the story-telling skills like a grown-up would. I was fire for Todd McFarlane & Greg Capullo as a kid and I am now a total sucker for Mignola's art (which I hated when I was a kid). Mark Bagley however was alway inbetween for me. I liked his style as kid (not as much as Todd of course) and I like his style now. He has definetly better story telling skills as McFarlane imho but also not that detailed drawing style. I think you really begin to admire him when you're older and you start looking at his sweeping lines & simplifications that please the eye.
In the original comic art world Mark’s amazing Spider-Man art pages are selling upwards of $5,000 a piece. Money isn’t everything. It is an indicator collectors value his artistic style and investment potential.
Yeah, Mark Bagley lucked out that I was 12 years old and never did manage to save up the $12.95 needed to order that Official Marvel Try-Out Book....lol
Bagley is actually my favorite comic artist. Something about his work has always just clicked with me, and I think you hit it: he puts story and character first, and does it incredibly well. I read an interview with Bendis as a kid where he said he would often remove dialogue after seeing Bagley's work because whatever he wanted to say was already there in the art.
Jlong908 this is actually an awesome idea. It would be crazy to see the exact moments when he started to go completely off the rocker haha. He’s devolved so much and the modern line reproduction and digital stuff definitely doesn’t do his stuff any favors. Was so boss at his height though

Mark Bagley is my favorite Spider-Man artist. Todd Mcfarlane is a close second, but Mark Bagley's art is just amazing. I love the way he draws Spider-Man with big eyes. It my favorite look for the character🤟
13:51 I know his faces sometimes look the same, but in that drawing they are the same character Supergirl and Powergirl are the same person, just from different universes.
I didn’t like Ultimate Spider-Man. One thing that really irked me about the art was that all of the high schoolers looked like they were 30+ years old. How long did Flash and Kong get held back??
For some they grew up with Todd McFarlane or Erik LArsen but to me Mark Bagley was the artist I grew up with and I just cannot see anyone else who captured Spiderman swinging past buildings better than he did. I guess your title is misleading then because he is definitely a great artist! I think he is the quintessential COMIC book artist. Just like Jim Lee his artwork fits the medium of comics well compared to others who either make it too cartoony or too real
Same. Bagley's is the default Spidey I picture in my head when you say, "Spider-man," just like Norm Breyfogle for Batman. Incidentally, Bagley's Joker (as seen in Spider-man/Batman) is right up there with Breyfogle's or Brian Bolland's in my mind.
Bagely is easily one of the greatest Spiderman artists of all time. Its hard to believe he had to take up penciling after Eric Larson and Todd McFarlane( 2 other Legendary artists) and still was a success! Aside from John Romita Sr( another Legendary Artist), Bagely's Spiderman was the most commercially used Spider-Man! His Spider-Man alone was even used as reference for the Marvel vs Capcom games...starting with Capcoms "Marvel Super Heroes-War for the Gems!"
The Ultimate universe had a lot of issues, but the Bagley/Bendis run on Spider-Man is legendary. As a 90's kid who grew up on all things Spidey, their run on Ultimate came at the right time for me---it's still my favorite Spider-Man story out there. Those books felt decidedly worse without his art, and I don't think it's a coincidence the whole thing ended shortly after he left.
mark bagely is peak honestly I grew up in this era and remember fondly reading Ultimate Spiderman, as a young true believer I was always reading the first few issues and imitating the action in the same open room i read them. then jumped back on the book to read the next few pages. One of the KEY moments that inspired me to be a writer/artist in comics.
I never liked his art. I never could understand why Marvel pushed him on everything they could, and I never could understand why he developed such a fan base as he has. He never progressed much with his art and it stayed the same.
I don't think it's fair or effective to use Super Girl and Power Girl as the example of his faces looking the same since they are literally the same person from different Universes. Or at least have been during different continuities.
I stumbled across Bagley's work on his New Warriors run and found it to be a refreshing oasis from the needlessly, over rendered trend that afflicted 90's comics.
I haven't watched this video yet but I'm looking forward to it. Bagley may be the one artist who improved the most in the time that I've followed his work. His earlier stuff is very meh to me but he became IMO one of the best in the biz. I'm a huge admirer of him.
Love the design of the Ultimate universe Venom, it's tad bit more grounded yet still very pleasing to look at. The idea of a goopy mess trying to keep a relatively human form is very fun to imagine too
Waiting all day at work to finally watch this ep! Bagley 90's Spiderman was my favourite back then. Many hours spent tryin to replicate his great spiderman /venom. Thanks for another great video about an artist who imo doesn't get as much credit as he should
Maybe using a picture of Supergirl and Powergirl as a basis for criticizing his faces looking similar was a joke, but all the same, feels a bit silly. Like, “Oh no, Kara Zor-El and Kara Zor-L look the same. What a tragedy!” lol I love Bagley’s art style. My first exposure to him was his run on Ultimate Spider-Man, which is still my favorite version of the character. His art is expressive, clean, and instantly recognizable. I was incredibly upset when he left the comic for a bit. The other artists just couldn’t live up to what we’d gotten before. I met him several years ago at DragonCon in Atlanta. He was humble and easygoing, and just a pleasure to talk to.
I collected Spider-Man during the Silver & Bronze era, so my taste is different from Fans of the 1990's. The title to the video is open to interpretation, depending on the Generation/Age of the Fan. Each artist has his/her own style & Fans. Bagley was "Good," but again it's my opinion. Subbed. Keep up the great content!
If anyone deserved to be known as one of the superstar comic artists of the ‘90s, Mark Bagley definitely did. Way more than Rob Liefeld that’s for sure. At least Bagley could actually draw.
Met Mark at a convention three years ago. Really awesome guy and basically told him his Spider-Man was the first Spider-Man I saw I comics and how important it is to me. When asked about my age, I told him and he told me "I have underwear older than you." Great dude and artist, and funny as well
13:45 Yeaaaa, sometime his faces look the same, but is it really fair to use a panel showing Supergirl (Kara Zor-el of Earth 1) and Powergirl (Kara-Zor-el of Earth 2) to illustrate that point?
Read the new warriors 90s issues back in the mid 2000s and can say I much preferred the smooth style than stuff like Rob and Mc Farlan it’s a lot cleaner and there isn’t as much clutter.
Mark is good but tom grummet is way underated...tom has dilivered classic comics and classic moments and never got any real credit for it...his superboy and robin runs should be considered modern classics...his thunderbolts run blew mark outta the water...
Bagley was just barely after my time originally reading and collecting. Thank you for highlighting him! I much prefer a proper illustrator versus the likes of McFarlane or Larsen. I will definitely pick up his New Warriors run, along with the Amazing Spider-Man run. Also, I now have a reason to buy post 2000 era Marvels. I will get some Ultimate Spider-Man! THANK YOU!!!!
What I love the most about your videos is your analysis of the artwork. Too many comic book channels focus on plot holes an story, so it's nice to hear what I pay attention to when I attempt to become a better cartoonist.
I love his art in the ultimate universe Just a minor complaint i have is that the shoes he draws for characters in ultimate Spider-Man look exactly the same and its just a minor nuisance
I have heard that DC is kinda crazy in the amount of corrections that they demand from artists. That is not something many artists can deal with ( I am an artist, and believe me I know) so that may be one of the reasons why he didn't stick around.
MB was the first comic artist I read every month on ASM. And while this might sound like damning-with-feint-praise, he was one of the best superhero artists of the decade.
Ultimate Spider Man was awesome... Until Disney dug up the corpse and decorated it in make up for the Disney XD channel. 👇 if u want Ultimate Universe line back 👇if u want line to rest in piece
The fuck are you even babbling about? "dug up it's corpse and decorated it in makeup for Disney XD"? You do know that Disney purchased Marvel a solid 8 YEARS before the Ultimate Universe was concluded and merged into the mainstream Earth-616 Marvel Universe, right? The idiotic narrative that Disney "ruined" Ultimate Marvel doesn't exactly hold up, champ.

Haha I like how creative you get with your opening segues. I never grew up reading super hero comics, so I enjoy all the stuff I learn on this channel
13:51 I know his faces sometimes look the same, but in that drawing they are the same character Supergirl and Powergirl are the same person, just from different universes.
I liked Bagley ! He reminded me of Ditko.
I never realized that was how David Michelinie's name was pronounced...now i do.
edward lightbringer me too, I used to pronounce it like the Michelin Man in my head growing up...."mish-a-laney" lol
@@petemarquez8759 i can totally relate to that...i started reading his work on Swamp Thing years before Spiderman.
I pronounced it like Mitch-a-lin
There's lot of people in comic books that I just went by for years mispronouncing their names! Ha! Ha!
There was a Spider-Man trading card set in the 90's entirely illustrated by Bagley, and damn was it gorgeous.
@@doctorhandsome yep! I own the entire set! Fleer Spiderman 94'! Easily the greatest set of all! ( 95&96 were cool too!)
Bagley spider-man even influenced all live action Spider-Man, it just show how iconic his spider-man is
@@Starsdealer I'm curious as to how my spidey buddy. could you share a bit?
I loved Mark Bagley’s early work on Amazing Spider-Man. Great video Chris.
I stumbled across Bagley's work on his New Warriors run and found it to be a refreshing oasis from the needlessly, over rendered trend that afflicted 90's comics.
that Supergirl/Powergirl thing displaying "the same face", if that was Supergirl, is unfair lmao: they're the same person from alternate earths
Yeah, it would be like showing Peter Parker and Ben Reilly and making same criticism.
I love this channel. Learning comic history, comparing art techniques and notes, hearing great “wtf” moments. Great for background work!
I haven't watched this video yet but I'm looking forward to it. Bagley may be the one artist who improved the most in the time that I've followed his work. His earlier stuff is very meh to me but he became IMO one of the best in the biz. I'm a huge admirer of him.
I'm not too much into Bagley's style(s), but I do like his Venom quite a bit.
I've always loved how he draws Venom!
Bagley is a huge talent. He's Amazing. Hard-working, and ingenious!!! Bags, thank you.
Second only to Jim Lee in my humble opinion!
Love the design of the Ultimate universe Venom, it's tad bit more grounded yet still very pleasing to look at. The idea of a goopy mess trying to keep a relatively human form is very fun to imagine too
In my opinion he’s the greatest
Spider-Man ever. All hail MARK BAGLEY!
Man, I loved the Thunderbolts! A fun series for the first 50-60 issues. The first dozen are great!
Waiting all day at work to finally watch this ep! Bagley 90's Spiderman was my favourite back then. Many hours spent tryin to replicate his great spiderman /venom. Thanks for another great video about an artist who imo doesn't get as much credit as he should
A consistent artist on a single book. Man, I'm old...
13:44 Well it's Power girl and Supergirl they are the same person pretty much so, only case when same face works lol :D
Maybe using a picture of Supergirl and Powergirl as a basis for criticizing his faces looking similar was a joke, but all the same, feels a bit silly. Like, “Oh no, Kara Zor-El and Kara Zor-L look the same. What a tragedy!” lol
I love Bagley’s art style.
When asked about my age, I told him and he told me "I have underwear older than you." Great dude and artist, and funny as well
Let's hang out Chris. I'll bring the weed. You bring the comics.
I'll bring the snacks.
Yes please bring more weed lol
I’ll bring the *police officers*
@@cerebros3671 Lady Cop?
@@cerebros3671 you do that talon. Weed is legal where Chris lives. He and I live in the same city. He has mentioned his home city in several videos.
13:45 Yeaaaa, sometime his faces look the same, but is it really fair to use a panel showing Supergirl (Kara Zor-el of Earth 1) and Powergirl (Kara-Zor-el of Earth 2) to illustrate that point?
Talking about clean style, Paul Smith X-Men run is super classic.
I enjoy Mark Bagley!
One of my favorite artists and my MOST favorite Spider-Man artist.
Mark Bagley is my all time favorite Spider-Man artist, the definitive Spider-Man IMHO
What I love the most about your videos is your analysis of the artwork. Too many comic book channels focus on plot holes an story, so it's nice to hear what I pay attention to when I attempt to become a better cartoonist.
I love his art in the ultimate universe
Just a minor complaint i have is that the shoes he draws for characters in ultimate Spider-Man look exactly the same and its just a minor nuisance
I have heard that DC is kinda crazy in the amount of corrections that they demand from artists. That is not something many artists can deal with ( I am an artist, and believe me I know) so that may be one of the reasons why he didn't stick around.
He did the first Spider-Man and Batman crossover, which was great.
MB was the first comic artist I read every month on ASM. And while this might sound like damning-with-feint-praise, he was one of the best superhero artists of the decade.
Ultimate Spider Man was awesome...
Until Disney dug up the corpse and decorated it in make up for the Disney XD channel.
👇 if u want Ultimate Universe line back
👇if u want line to rest in piece
The fuck are you even babbling about? "dug up it's corpse and decorated it in makeup for Disney XD"?
You do know that Disney purchased Marvel a solid 8 YEARS before the Ultimate Universe was concluded and merged into the mainstream Earth-616 Marvel Universe, right? The idiotic narrative that Disney "ruined" Ultimate Marvel doesn't exactly hold up, champ.
