- I have a 2002 SAAB 9-5 Aero with a trunk full of parts the last owner had collected for the car. We're going to dig that box out of the broken trunk and install as many of the new parts as we can in one night. It won't take much longer to have this car running as good as new!

When my friends Volvo 480 was doomed I helped her get a new car. Her criterias were #1 not a wagon #2 not big #3 not silver. So I got her a silver Saab 9-5 wagon. It has caused me to do alot of these things seen in the video, like dog bone, PCV system, vacuum hoses, filters, but also E brake cables and running new brake lines in the rear. But it runs good and even if all criterias were broken she loves it.
Remove the oil pan inspect and clean oil sump; they are notorious for clogging up which kills bearings.
The top looked clean, but tbf it would be best to still do a sump check anyway. Two votes for sump drop as next vid haha
Yes!, i have owned 4 saab 9-5 turbo at this point and all of them ran dry due to a clog or a leak which caused so much damage they all had to be scrapped.
And the scary thing is once the oil pressure warning goes off you only really got a minute or two at most before the engine is a write off.

@@jdrancho1864 well, the first one that broke on me was bought for parts so that one i was ok with risking.
The second one was due to a previous owner not cleaning the sump after a turbo swap and i kinda assumed he had, little did i know it was full of metal from a previous turbo failure.
Third one was my brothers automatic and im not 100% on what happend with that one tbh.
Fourth one would be my old main driver i had for over 2 years, lovely car, but me being a cheap dumbass i topped it off with alittle bit of old oil i had lying around just to be sure it had enough oil.
few days later it flickered the oil light on the highway and by the time i could park it at work it was too late, major problems with compression and barely ran on 3 cylinders if that.

These engines were known for oil sludging. Thats why they updated the pcv system. I would drop the oil pan and clean the sump before the oil light starts flickering

Great video JR, can't wait to see the improvements and fixes on this car. Avis had a few SAAB 9-5s at Vancouver airport around 2002. Was able to rent one and absolutely loved driving it because of the comfort and fun to drive factor.
My advice is to check all the Saab Forums. Owning a Saab can be a wonderful experience as long as you know what you are doing and have the parts. Forums work both for parts that are rare, and more importantly, common problems that you have to watch out for, like the DI Cassette that someone people even carry a spare with them "Just in Case"
9-5 Aeros make great daily tuners and the performance aftermarket is surprisingly still large for an 18 year old car. Highly recommend giving a ring to John Chargois in Houston. His 05 aero is the fastest in the world!
I'd say clean the oil sump and pickup as well. These older 9-5´s with the pcv-system can potentially have some oil-sludge in the oil-pickup and in the long run cause the engine to run low on oil, because the pickup gets clogged.

Spray a lot of Fluid Film spray on the motor mounts every fall, to help prevent the rubber from failing. The Lowes store near me sells it. I use it for motorcycle chains and jacket zippers too.

I am restoring a 2000 Saab 9-3 Viggen convertible. Have owned 5 other Saabs including two of the one you’re fixing. The PCV update V.6 was to reverse the issue with the engine not breathing correctly and causing major sludge issues. If you replace the DIC, use the SEM OE version for $230, the chines knockoffs are junk and will leave you stranded. I would also recommend converting the car over to Amsoil Signature Series 0W-40. Your gear selector is missing the plastic track which is why there is a hole in the center console.
The engines were known to have oil sludge issues and SAAB tried to fix it many different ways over the years including many revisions of the PCV.
Almost all cars had problems with oil sludge in the early 2000s
Cool video, im a saab guy myself. The different version of the pcb was because longer service intervalls, plus that the us oil is a lot worse quality than the european, so sludge was building in the engine (foam from the oil-film breaking up). Since their (saab) largest export was to the us, they changed it several times, to be sure. And as you know, turbo engines needs that negative cranccase flow, or the pistons go bye-bye. The gasket to the valve cover is supposed to look like that, when you tighten down the cover (in cross of corse) it shapes after the surface. Everytime you lift the cover, new seal. Keep up the good work!

Nice job, JR! Making progress. Code 12 pertains to the air distribution motor, 09 pertains to the right heater flap motor and 21 pertains to the recirculation motor

A lot. That version of the 9-5 was on sale for 13 years. Saab had a lot of time to revise and update things.
WatchJRGo The turn signal stalk has plastic bits that hold it in the neutral position. Those snap off. If it wobbles at all, this has happened. Slide a short piece of fuel hose over the remaining stub of plastic to replace the snapped-off bit and it will be better than new.

Nice work bro! Definitely sounds like a Saab with the routine air filter maintenance requiring jacking the car, but the motor mount is easy to access on top. Keep 'em coming!

One of the nicest Saabs. Mind you, I love the 900 turbo from the eighties. They have character unlike the bland, anonymous German equivalents. Oooh! Controversy
I had a 2006 9-3 with only 110k miles ran like a champ, super reliable...put 20k miles on it in 6 months had the same trunk issues! Sold it to a family for only $1800 they love the car.

Damn you JR. I have a modded 9-5 Aero Wagon (it's fast) that I love but hardly drive nowadays. Just when I have resigned myself to moving it on I now have all these people on RUclips saying how cool these cars are. Talk about messing with my mind! :-). PS- you should really do a sump drop and clean as a precaution, especially if it has been running an old PCV revision. Not too hard to do once you know how.
I have always loved Saabs. My parents owned an 87 Saab 900S Turbo and while that was the absolute worst car they ever owned in terms of reliability (with my mom's 1986 VW Rabbit diesel manual wagon coming in a very close second) it was also fast, very comfortable to ride in, and I loved the way that car looked. I remember one winter we got close to 16 inches of snow overnight and we needed to go to the store. We went out to the garage and for some reason my parents always rolled all of the windows down when they pulled the car in the garage, and when we went to roll the windows up to leave that morning the power window relay went out and the windows wouldn't roll up. We drove the car with a huge quilt over it...lmao That car went through three turbos, multiple electronic components that went bad over the years, the automatic transmission crapped the bed once, and what finally took it out was the timing chain snapped because my parent's salesman was driving the car in heavy rain, the turbo somehow sucked up a bunch of water, and it hydrolocked the engine. They traded it in on a 1987 Mercedes Benz 190E and that car was 100 times better than that Saab. We drove that Benz down to Florida when we moved there and eventually the speedometer stopped working along with the odometer at 257k miles, and we drove it for another 50k miles after that. What killed that car was the water pump went out and the mechanic wanted over $1000 to replace it and my mom said screw that, keep it. BTW, JR, if you read my novel, thanks, I tried to keep it PG...
SAAB's are some of the most amazing cars to drive. Each was released far more advanced than other cars released the same years. My SAAB Vector '05 has practically EVERY imaginable luxury you pay premium for today, with the sole exception of no reversing camera. Sensors are all you really need though. I drove brand spanking new Mercedes(es) as a cab driver (generally always new cars that get swapped out once they reach 300,000 km.. which is just a couple years) that were less advanced than my SAAB.
I've had so little grief in the way of cost to keep this car up and running as well. Two years of fixes (one fuel pump, one caliper. And then there's one part that I forgot the name of, but it was a part that makes a "grinding" sound when worn down and you turn the wheel completely to the side that needs replacing. It was a $100 part) that cost me a grand total of ~$1200. Not bad for two years of fix. Right now there is only one thing that's obnoxious and that's that the wheel doesn't always lock when I pull the key out of the ignition. In a way it denies the car from being started up, but just turning the key before the car gets to "POST", and it starts... then the error goes away for months.
Absolutely fantastic car in every respect. I'll never have a car I enjoy as much to drive as I do with this one.

nice work you are doing there! i have a Saab 9-5 2.0t sedan 1999 that i have swapped the turbo for an aero one and then i have a tuned biopower map in it, 253hp on E85 and 1 bar of boost on idle and 1.5 bar at max, it just works so damn good and the raw power is amazing. keep up the good work JR ;)

Nice work! Car has great bones. I see oil under the car on the pan. Common on these saabs. It can be the oil pan or coming from the head gasket. 90% of the time you can just get new stretch bolts and retighten the head. How many miles on this beast?

Once you get the 9-5 fully done, should take a road trip to Portland, OR to the home of Gary Small Saab, one of the last remaining original Saab dealers. Would make for great content. Or a trip to the Saab Museum in Sturgis. Either would be great.

Once you have an accident in a Saab, you realize just how hard it is to die in one. Several documented cases of people nailing trees at 65+ MPH and walking away. Plus, you can practically just shove the jack under it anywhere and lift. The 9-5 wagon has those nice removable sliding cargo tie-down clips that are capable of holding the static weight of the entire car. (Saab actually made a film demonstrating this.)

the 99 95 I had had the CID issue too - I found instructions that used faom tap to basically put extra pressue on the ribbon cable to make contact - worked a champ, the ribbon calb ewas (If I remember, it's been a long time) soldered on? Also, the blend door thing is dangerous in a northern climate. No defrost in winter in No Beuno. SAAB wanted $5000 to fix it -had to pull entire interior, so they said. Right after I sold it, I found that someone had built a kit and some instructions to do it, and it look like what you had in your hand in the first video :)
If you get this one sorted, and you can source repair/replacement parts, this might make for good "keeper."
We had a 1990 900 Turbo Convertible, and we sold it because some things became unobtainable.

You should find a replacement plastic shield that goes under the entire front of the bumper area, since it maximizes airflow through the intercooler and radiator. Minimizes heat-soak.
You might consider selling other toys, as this one may become your favorite. The power and torque from that 4 is hilarious.

Rear engine mount made a huge difference for my 2001 9-5 compared to the other three mounts.

The original PCV system caused sludging in the engine, Saab had several attempts at fixing it, version 6 was the cure apparently. I'd recommend you drop the oil pan and clean the oil pick up strainer, the sludging issue blocked the strainer causing oil starvation eventually killing the engine. Saab also spec'd Mobil 1oil to maintain a healthy engine life, don't forget you've got 250bhp in a 2.3 litre four pot.

You're going to love this car, the engine and transmission are unbelievably robust. If you have patience for the stupid little things that break when they are old you will have a good ownership experience. You are basically doing all of those things, they are very reliable when driven daily! Speaking as a consecutive owner of two 9-5s both with over 200k or near 200k. Just change with synthetic every 5k and you will be good.
Dare we say the Saab is a keeper ? I'd definitely keep that and ditch the Beamers.

You are going to want to pull the oil pan asap and clean the oil pickup- Especially if you are swapping the turbo.
I am a Jeep Wrangler guy, but somehow this is my favorite RUclips channel!
While having the valve cover off you should've burned out the two small bended pipes inside. I use a gas-torch and go to town on them and get them really hot. You'll hear it start fizzling, and then crap runs out of them. Keep torching them untill you can run a piece of wire or a zip-tie through without blockage. Often they're gunked up and are essential to the PCV system.
Good lads!! I did the PCV update on my 2001 Aero, job well done. I think the 6 just refers to 2006, when it came out. I think there are just three different systems. The original, the first fix, the proper fix. I'll do the engine mounts on mine when I get a chance. Very nice old car to look after. I haven't watched the video all the way to the end yet but I'm wondering if you have as much of a headache changing the cabin filter as I do. Always seems a pain in the ass to change that one. I've done the engine air filter without jacking the car up a couple times, it does help to lift or drive on a kerb to get a bit of height, but can be done without. Scrape your knuckles on the floor instead.
Get a new coil pack ! A genuine one. You'll notice the difference that coil pack looks ancient. NGK plugs only as well (if you didn't already know that).

I don’t recommend replacing the SID ribbon because it doesn’t last but replacing the whole LCD that comes with a preinstalled ribbon. The ribbon is heat sealed to the PCB. You’ll need a heat sealing iron. I recommend replacing all the SID lamps while you’re there because the filaments break when you remove them to fix the LCD.
If you're gonna do the spark plugs you might as well throw a new ignition cassette in there while you're at it. Awesome video!

The 6 pcv systems was becuase of oil sludge issues with the engine. The base engine is super old but when they upgraded it for the 9-5 with improved emissions and fuel mileage, they messed up the pcv system and then spent years on trying to fix that issue. Older saabs had that problem also but only when the oil was changed too late or when fully synthetic oil was not used. do recommend you drop the oilpan and check the oil pickup screen for sludge and change the o rings on both the oil tubes down there.
The airfilter design caught my eye, looking like it will flow very well for a stock part !

Just for future reference, on ALL Swedish autos, when you turn off the car, you MUST wait no less that 12 minutes before disconnecting the battery so, that ALL modules can download they're status and be saved. If you don't then they MUST be "Normalized" to get the various systems to function again.
The DI cassette makes and excellent screw holder.
1.) Check out bba reman. for your SID. Costs more than a ribbon, but comes with a lifetime warranty.
2.) ACC errors can be caused by stepper motors shafts popping out. Tap them back in gently and your codes should go away.
If I got to work on the Saab Aero with Watch JR Goes I would pack up the Hash Pipe with Rocky and get all schmoked up.
First plaguing issue you may run into is broken wires leading to the trunk lid. The wire loom makes a 90 degree bend in the weather boot from the body to the lid. Wires break and you lose backup lamps, trunk release and other functions.
You'll also want to drop the oil pan and clean the pickup screen. The reason for the PCV issue is to prevent sludging. If it's been 17 years and never been updated, you're running on borrowed time. The oil light won't flicker until 7psi and by the time you see it, its too late. Ask me how I know.
