I Made A BIG Mistake Working On My SAAB 9-5 But It PAID Off With Free Tools

- I own one car that is universally loved, my 2002 SAAB 9-5 Aero. The private jet for the road is great to drive but mine has been parked for roughly 2 years now. We're going back through and replacing all of the parts that I had stored in the trunk to make it a driver again. It's time to fix tons of issues in one day, the jalousie replacement, painting and installing the wiper arms, fixing the intermittent wiper function, replacing the cabin air filter... the list goes on and on. Soon this 9-5 will be ready for takeoff again.

Lol after the first couple of "Jalousie's" I was like "he just wants to say Jalousie as much as possible"... made me laugh when you outright said that.
Exactly! Only to be followed up with him spray painting his eyes! You'd think this guy rarely worked on cars sometimes.
I’d only heard that word to describe louvered windows, like old houses in Florida have (my Florida Keys high school had them) and I’m used to it pronounced so it rhymes with ‘jealousy’
I will always love Saab. I had a 1999 Saab 9-5 that I got when it was about 2 years old. Maybe I was lucky but I had Zero issues with it in the 3 years I had it.
2+3=just out of warranty. Got rid of it just in time.
I thought that said you got the Saab when you were 2😂
This video brought to you by the word jalousie
The plastic push clips that hold the carpet cover over the AC lines, among other places: if you still have the factory tools in the trunk, the screwdriver has a nub on the handle designed for pushing into those clips to release them. You can do the cabin filter using just that tool.
This brings back memories from working on my old 9-5 wagon.
Every time I miss it, I just think about all the problems and issues and voila! Nostalgia gone!
Sort of had to fix every single thing JR did in these videos, and then some...
Watching this is nostalgia for my 2004 9-5 Aero 5-speed. I loved that car and I miss it dearly. I had close to 260K miles on it when I let it go. Too much rust and too scared of what would go wrong next. Original clutch, gear box and engine. ran perfectly. Now I find myself looking for another in good shape but not easy to find. Thanks for sharing yours, I'll live vicariously through yours!
Why not to weld one? I have one fith rust holes in longerones that I can put my fist throught, but still it passed mot
SAAB's enginerring is legednary. The OG Top Gear guys did a review of SAAB when it died. GM killed a lot of brands world wide incuding Holden in Australia. Evidently when SAAB entered rallying they had to fit a roll cage but the car didn't need it.
Holden, Saab, pontiac are 3 of general motors biggest mistakes, should have never gotten rid of them.
I saw a Saab Sonnett lll with a Ford Taunus V4. The tinniest 4 you’ll ever see. Saw it on Vice Grip Garage. It was a 73 or 74. I didn’t know they were so collectible. You ought to get one and restore it. Might be a challange for you. O’Reilly's has the engine stuff you'll need.
You are one of the first… if not the first video I look for at night.
I had to rewind the video to figure out what a jalousie was. Now I know and knowing is half the battle ! 😄
It looks so much better now.
I’m always amazed at how much you can get done with a trim tool in one hand and a camera in the other! 👍
I did the factory method on the jalousie on my 1st of 4 9-5's. It took me 3 hours. My Saab specialist would bill 1.5 hours. Takes 3 minutes with the shortcut and the other 3 have been fine for 2-5 years and 30k+ miles each. Sometimes the Saab factory WIS is terrible! the alternator replacement recommends pulling engine mounts and the pass side axle. If you sand the intake manifold casting ridge you can yank it from the top and it's only a 2 hour job.
I cringed when I saw you cut that shifter part but it will work fine like that. A cheap set of torx keys would do the job of getting that plastic cap off the back and slide the leather shifter off. First time it's a task but once you know how it only takes an extra 10 min to remove it. You can also take off the pass side motor mount, lift the engine and you shouldn't have to sand down the intake for replacing the alternator.
'Jalousie' = JAH-luh-see. Accent on the first syllable. It's also a type of window common in tropical climates.
Prayers to all affected by the tornadoes! Good for you mentioning it! Glad you and all your friends are safe! Much respect!
Thanks we're hurting here in BG but we're strong and we will come back!
Prayers for those involved in the tornado.
Thanks it's been a difficult holiday season but we're coming back stronger than ever here in BG.
Use some black colored epoxy and fill in the shift bezel where it's got that hole
"Jalousie" is a type of window that was popular in the 1950's and '60's. It consists of 20-25 horizontal glass plates about 4 inches wide and the width of the window. There is a hand crank and an aluminum mechanism that opens them all up at the same time, allowing air to pass.
They look like hell, they allow bugs to enter the house, and they have no insulating properties at all; They work in Florida to some extent but even there they are a BAD idea.
Great video!
We had these windows in our house when I was a kid. My parents pronounced them as "Jow-La-Cee" windows. I had no clue what word JR was saying in this video. Funny.
@@enjoylife7030 I've heard "Jaal uh see", and "Juh Loo see". Most people in Florida happily rip them out and replace them with impact glass.
JAH-luh-see. And the windows are for tropical areas with open/un-airconditioned spaces, so insulation isn't the point at all. They're for maximum ventilation with some ability to close for rain.
@@llaughridge True. The thing is, they are not needed anymore due to the prevalence of AC, and they are not the hot tip at all in hurricanes/wind storms.
Some homes in Key West have been retrofitted with impact glass windows on the INSIDE of the home to preserve the look of the original jalousie windows; This is the best of both worlds since these old windows do have a certain charm. On certain homes.
Saabs are so underrated and such fun cars
I mean, you didn't believe in Santa anymore, but then like a Hallmark movie..the Saab was your Santa Claus. It's a Christmas miracle. That's the Saab's way of telling you it loves you and all is forgiven.
I did the cabin air filter on my 2004 Saab 9-5. What an awful job that was. You have to take all of the crap off to get to it and the basically stand on your head under the dash to get to it.
Love the Saab content JR!! Uber cool👏👏👏👏
There is a guy in Rhode Island that specializes in SAABs. He has his own boneyard of SAABs and probably has any part you need. It's called Wayne's World of SAABs. As a bonus he also makes his own maple syrup, Delicious
Could you have a thicker piece of vinyl cut to cover the broken gear indicator piece?
I missed you yesterday. 😔😂
Didn't get enough fixed yesterday 😂
Yes sir we are hurting here in Bowling Green and everybody's thoughts and prayers as well as any assistance to our struggling neighbors is greatly appreciated, you know it's so hard to lose your father and then half of your town all in the middle of the holidays but I'm just thankful my home is intact and my family is alive although that was a terrible night.
Wow, the only hard part of changing cabin air filter on my Honda is emptying out my wife's stuff from the glove box. On the other hand I've never found free tools when changing my Honda filters.
Purple tint removal next?
J.R., I saw that your paint can was clogged. After you get done spraying with a rattle can, turn the can over and spray until it gets clear. Then when you use it again it will work perfectly.
I always do… but this can has probably been sitting for years. 😬
JR, a lot of people don’t watch any of the traditional forms of news, but surely you follow what is going on in the world?
Your channel does an incredible job sharing your amazing ability to fix just about anything and I only talk about news because you brought it up.
If you want the news, don’t watch mainstream news
@@lesterparker1594 I agree, Lester.
Great narrative of the shifter trim ... too bad we couldn't see anything
Zero effort...He could have just mounted the camera on the glass somehow...Or have someone hold it...I was looking at his arm for 5 minutes...
I love how everything is "Perfect" ... all I heard was cheap skeaky plastic of the cheapest kind and he was pulling on it ... waiting for it to break.
Another Saab story.
I have a 2000 9-5 Aero Stage 1 and it's an amazing sleeper! I'm planning to upgrade to stage 3 or so. Hoping you'll take it even further!
I'm so happy your right arm is invisable. LMBO! 🤣😂
What a crazy filter design. Great video as always, keep the Saab content coming!
The cabin air filter job looks a hell of a lot easier than on my Mazda5 6MT. You have to disassemble the center console and then unscrew a cover that’s smaller than the air filter itself. The filter comes in two parts, so you you need to stick one half in, push it up, and then slide the other piece underneath the first without the first one falling down. To make this job easier it’s best to do it upside down, laying on your back.
I made the mistake of buying a cheap filter from Amazon. After the hell I went through to swap this annoying thing my car then smelled like cat p!ss, a smell it didn’t have with the OEM filter.
Yup! My 2005 Mazda3 was exactly the same...
You have to wonder how some automotive engineer designs a car so that regular maintenance items such as the cabin air filters are so convoluted to change. I remember one VW I had (a Passat) where I had to remove carpeted panels from the tunnel and parts of the glove box in order to access the cabin air filter. I took the flexibility of a contortionist to finish putting it back together. After that, I just left it to the mechanics when I took it in for scheduled service.
...and VW wins!
If I could help Watch JR Goes work on the Saab 9-5 I would drink the shot of whiskey and the cold Bartle Skeets and pack up the Hash Pipe with Rocky and get all schmoked up
Volvo S80 cabin filter was a pain - not missing that car at all...
LOVE those rims I've never seen them in chrome
My Mom had a 2005 VW Beetle and the cabin air filter was a multistep process to access and change. When I sold the VW I did the maintenance including the cabin air filter. It was so bad I put in a note with the miles and date under the first panel one removes to access the filter. The original factory filter I removed had been chewed through by a mouse and he/she took up residence in the dash.
Got to luv a hidden cabin air filter😉. You have to ask yourself has it ever been changed? Had a a Merc Sprinter van years ago with no AC but it still had a cabin filter. It was never changed when the van was serviced at the dealers. I eventually found it when investigating the lack of heat/airflow. Buried under a fabric insulation cover in the engine bay….absolutely blocked.🙄
Fun fact: according to swedish law the seatbelt sign should be in the roof, next to the rearwiev mirror. Thats because the police can check the light when they are following you, if it´s on, they pull you over and give you a ticket for not using the seatbelt. Sweden is amazing, so many simple things that makes life easier..
Good for its time, but our modern always-connected 5g equipped cars will report any actionable offense to the authorities in real time. If your offense is deemed serious, the remote kill switch will disable your vehicle.
And that's what electrical tape can solve.
Pretty sure you vacuumed up a missing 10mm 🤣🤣
Mayfield and bowling green both look like a bomb hit , thanks for mentioning jr
Bless toyota engineers lol, my 18 tacomas cabin filter has a drop down door in the back of the glove box takes 30 seconds to replace
Bet you're PRNDL doesn't wear out with a hole in it either and I'm sure your wipers work properly. I laugh at all the stuff that's broken on this Saab and so glad I never really cared for them. Hope he got this thing for nearly nothing. It's a POS.
$50 for that shifter suuround the eSaabParts show there are three of them! Get one and get it perfect! Entertaining video, as always!
Nice!!
Don't you ever sleep ???? Lol
Back to some classic Watch JR Go video. I love it.
JR NEEDS A SHOP DOG!!!!!!!!!!!
Are you missing your battery box cover? 2002+ have a passive battery cooling system. A duct from in front of the condenser brings cool air under the battery platform. As the car moves the air flows in and cools the battery to a temp below that of the underhood air. Heat is the enemy of lead acid batteries. Good engineering. Get yourself a used battery box cover JR!
No idea how, but on my old Lexus ES350 (RIP) when I pulled the engine air filter I found one of the spare keys to my dads 4runner, even though I had never changed it at that point
From Sweden here, not hard to come by these parts! I drive a 09 9-3 and a 9-5 04 Aero! :)
Parts are easy to find here in Sweden.
Not so in the U.S.
With the 2005 Mazda 3 cabin filter the removal process was the similar; glove box, two fuse and relay panels to remove, some securing screws at the Hvac, then removal of the cabin filter housing. The filter is in two pieces because there is no way one cabin filter would fit. It for removal. 5 to. 75 hours.
I know you found a 10mm socket too
I probably did suck that up... there was a lot of noise when the ratchet came out of there 😂
Please remove the rear window tint.
^This.
never been this early before
WatchJRGO outside to spray paint when he has a 30,000 sqft shop. :-)
Can't paint everything insidethe shop to paint some windshield wiper arms.
I don't allow ANY paint inside... no spray paint, no disc brake quiet, no car paint. 🍻
Makes sense, VOC's are nasty and the shop is way too nice to get spray paint in
if you spilled a liquid on the jalousie would it be a juicy jalousie?
Missed opportunity to clean and ceramic coat the cowl plastic (or just get a new piece to make it look nice).
Loving the content. LOL at the ratchet in the air box. Dude dropped it and went "where the hell did it go?" Now we know.
Waiting for Project Rollce Smoke to start again, when will that day come?
The 3 hours of a cabin air filter change is probably one of the reasons they don't exist anymore.
I bought some Motul oil for my 2005 nissan sentra S with 1.8, I hope that the ole car likes it. I hope that there is improvement and if there is I will use this in all my Sentra's and my Corvette, as for my 95 chevy van that is 2 quarts of Lukas and 3 quarts of conventional Pennzoil, the Corvette also gets a quart of Lukas. Lukas is great in these old pushrod engines.
If you had a drinking game where if you said gelusi we would have to take a shot. I think somebody would die of alcohol poisoning!
The Corvette plant in Bowling Green got hit too, started a fire but just a little damage luckily
Like all yr videos. Have watched since before you quit yr regular job. Applause. Saab fixes are cool n needed for how many Saab owners. What average ownership 3 years at most. You want millions of watch and rewatch viewers fix multiple generations of the Dodge Grand Caravan. Not as Sexy or extravagant as other foreign makers. The millions of DGC owners out there plus rented for vacations. The diy owners of the dgc research when time for a fix to a common problem. You could be the conduit of can do. Always good videos with good closeups of strategic sensors. Good stuff. Applause
Shortage of DGC ‘s new or used says car buyers want’ em. Cant get one to rent anywhere. Idea/suggestion for your Tuloo. A fleet of them. “JRGO’s DGC rental and rehab.
the broken shiftstick surround is the same as from a GM/ opel/vauxaul Kadett/Astra 86 /2002
Please don't try and put led bulbs into a housing designed for a halogen bulb. The led bulbs do not output light in the same way and lead dramatically increased glare for other drivers.
Yes. I hate people that just start putting HIDs or LEDs into halogen housings...I've never put them in my cars and I can see perfect with halogen bulbs. Waste of money in my opinion. And I've been working on cars for 14 plus years. I don't even do led signal bulbs or any other bulbs. Nothing wrong with what the car came with and they last a long ass time. My 04 Acura still has its original HID headlight bulbs and they work fine. I just replaced my wife's headlights on her 02 Sonata and they were original. Granted the car only has 106k miles but still.
What about the washers on the sub-frame bushings? You still need to swap them so they are on top of the bushing (between bushing and body), there were some comments about this in the previous video
Love the SAAB
Did you change oil and clean oil pickup mesh on oilpan? It is very important to clean!!!
Making me miss my 2006 9-3. Great car.
My daughter's 2005 Mazda 3 had one of those "hang the cabin air filter in place and build the car around it" deals... I used up most of my curse words changing it! FYI: it was absolutely filthy... evidently, the previous owners did not want to go through the travail of replacing it!
Cabin filter; No problemo!
@WatchJRGo Are you going to upgrade the tailight bulbs to LED too? Would love to see the process to figure out which ones are not too bright and not too dim but look like a simple OEM part. If so, also a comparison between the incandescent and LED would be cool. Thanks!
I have DDM Tuning 6 x Cree LED bulbs in my tail lights, turn signals, and reverse lights. The brake lights are significantly brighter than stock or even the Sylvania Zevo LEDs you find at the auto parts stores. Just the parking light function on the DDM bulbs is brighter than the brake function on stock and Sylvania LEDs. The DDM bulbs also have a noticeable brightness increase between parking and brake functions... something most cheap LEDs fail to do. And lastly, the DDM bulbs actually fit securely in my 7443/7440 sockets unlike the Sylvania LEDs that don't snap in like a stock bulb would.
I'm sure there's probably something brighter or better out there... but these just work for me
Great content as always - just know that jalousie is pronounced with the accent on the first syllable. The word is used to describe those old porch windows with parallel panes of glass and a hand crank. Your shifter part looks like them. Anyway, good stuff. Thanks!
Perhaps that's how it evolved in the US, but in Europe where the word comes from, the accent is on the last syllable.
Bowling Green is in very bad shape, it barely missed my uncle's house literally by across the road. Several factories and storage facilities are completely destroyed, along with multiple historic homes. I went through BG on sunday to visit my sister in my hometown it was a pain to get through to some of the backroads that I needed. It will be years to get it back to were it was.
Corvette factory?
@@Flies2FLL I think it did get damaged on a section as the side I seen was fine but heard it got damaged, everything else around it was collapsed except for a large metal factory. If you have one on order expect more delays as I'm sure it was closed for a day or two, it basically went down the main road 31W around BG.
@@whatchis1120 Wow, that sucks. I don't have one on order, I'm into Porsche's, but I'd hate to see the place damaged. That is a prestigious product and it represents a lot of good paying jobs. Hope everything works out-
Ive been waiting a long time for the Saab to get finished
one thing that I have not seen on this channel yet and would be cool to do on the 9-5, would be LED swap inside and out.
I didnt watch long enough, but still voting for LED swap inside the car also.
I can’t stop saying jalusi 😂😂
Laughed at the knock prank.
Any signs of life for Project Rolls Smoke?
Flush your eye's out a lot with cold water to get the paint out. Josh has a nice car the 1933 hot rod.
I didn't notice you checking the intermittent wiper function after replacing the relay, did I miss it or did you not do it on camera?
My OCD says it needs a steering wheel decal... Nice work!
I wish my 97X would have a cabin air filter
MERRY CHRISTMAS SIR 🎄🇺🇸👍
I think a wet sand on the Saab hood is warranted!! Brand new car!!🤙🤙🤙
I think a wet sand on the hood is what has caused it to look as it does. Not enough clear left too do much with 😔
Yeah, there's no paint left now... it would have to be painted 👨🎨
@@TheBarberShopScott oh drats. But appreciate the helpful feedback 🤙👍
@@WatchJRGo not sure whether it's possible. But I bought a same colour hood for one of my 9-3s from a wreckers yard. No one wants the Saabs. & that suits me fine. The quality of the panels on these cars are outstanding. Just a thought. & cheers for the response 🤩🤩
I don't understand why they make those filters so hard to get to. One of my friends asked me to help him change the cabin filter in his girlfriend's Honda Civic we were riding in, so I changed it on the way home from the passenger seat. All of my cars are similar. No need to be so difficult.
Whats the status of the Motul Lounge?
Great camera angle. Couldn’t see anything you were doing on the shifter fix.
You would think he could afford a $15 tripod
Try changing the cabin air filter on a 90's BMW 3 series..... it is just as bad..... glove box has to come out, the footwell cover too, an airduct in front of the filter opening and you absolutely have to clip out the wire distribution box right in front of that filter opening..... THEN you can unlock the cover, pull that and the filter..... now do that in a car nearly 30 years old...... be ready to have the plastic parts ready to swap them out if they aren't already broken anyways.....
When is the purple tint coming off?
This video desperately needs a "jalousie" counter 😆
Came to the comment section to see if anyone else noticed "JahLoosie" 🤣
Isn't that called the PRNDL not the gelucie?
I call the PRNDL the gear position sensor on the transmission. The Jalousie is the rubber slider that covers the hole for the shifter 🍻
Jalouise
Great video from JR.
You need to collect performance Saabs, like the 9-7X SS and 9-2 WRX.
It would have been great if a 10mm had come out of cabind air filter box.
Don't forget the Turbo X, and NG9-5 Aero!
@@CardboardSliver it was a joke since one is a Chevy/GMC and one is a Subaru is Saab clothing.
That cabin filter is the size of my house filter lmao
2016 bmw x1 cabin filter is also just as terrible. Can't wait to do my 9-5 lol
To a Saturday night date on Sunday morning: That is it for today babe, thank you so much for coming and please, like share or subscribe whatever you wanna do and I'll talk to you, NEXT TIIIIIIIIME.
I thought my mercedes filters are a pain and it has four of them. Two particle filters behind the glovebox and two carbon filters under the kick panel. Looks like the Saab has me beat except I never found any tools in there. Lol
I don't even want to talk about the mono-wiper repair.
Mono wipers are so cool though! 😍
@@WatchJRGo I think it's kinda neat but I rarely get to use it here in Vegas. No rain!
There is a rubber boot/seal at the base that was all dried and disintegrated on mine when I bought the car. Getting the whole mechanism motor and all off the car is not to difficult.
It is supposed to split apart so you can slide the old boot off and the new one on. Mine would not separate. The center shaft was frozen in place. So I tore the old one off. I stretched the new one over the whole mechanism. They are pretty thick and are not made to stretch. I managed to do it anyway without tearing it.
It works great and the design is ingenious the way it extends out when going towards horizontal on either side and then retracts as it goes vertical so it pretty much covers the whole windshield. I just paid $31 for a Bosch wiper blade for it at Napa. Yikes!
I expect that new ratchet to show up in every video now.
