The fan only kicks in, when the thermostatic switch senses the coolant is hot enough. No coolant, means no fan until the engine is virtually cooked. First thing anyone that knows anything about cars does before even turning the key, is check all fluid levels.

The first generation mini has a temperature sensor for the engine built into the centre dial.

The coolant loss meeds to be investigated. Also the temp sensor plug should not be wet insdie. Something is leaking....😮
