There's a big ski area further down on this mountain, complete with chairlifts. They blast the snow above it so it doesn't get too deep, then suddenly come down when people are skiing. That avalanche was actually smaller than the one they'd have if they didn't do that.
What is really scary here is... the lower slopes caught up in the fracturing aren't that steep and not what you would typically associate with avalanche terrain... A perfect metaphor for too big to fail...
I could snowboard on top of that. Sure it's a hellova lot of snow, but the slope is not steep at all, and it's not moving very fast like most avalanches. Looks like fun. I had no idea New Zealand had mountains like this.
Reminds me of when my uncle Bobby's coveralls split down the side bobbing for apples at the farmhouse when i was 11 - that was more of a flab-o-lanche though.
hidochan; That was a canon being fired. Look closely at the shaded part of the slope you can see it detonate. They do this all over the world to trigger avalanches to make it safer for skiers, climbers, boarders, etc.
True there was a charge that initiated this slide, but this was NOT control. This was a couple dudes fucking around causing a MASSIVE slide. This was done in a "National" park. They were disciplined. Amazing!
Yeh they start the avalanches using what is basically a big gun. They monitor any high risk areas and stop the snow building up, so there is less risk of massive avalanches. However this time, I think they left it a bit too late...
my grandpa, Willi Unsoeld, died on Mt. Rainer in washington. I wasn't born yet, but let me tell you, avalanches are no laughing matter. My grandpa was the first to ascend the west ridge, and most difficult ridge, of Mt. Everest, yet he died in an avalance on a mountain half the size, and also his "home mountain." avalanches can be triggered by the slightest prod of a ski pole, so please people, ski or ride or climb with at least one partner, and avalanche gear for back country journeys.
This is the glacier on Mt Ruapehu central north island NZ, true left of the Turoa skifield. The peak on the left looking up is Tahurangi, the outer right peak is girdlestone.
people do that all around the world that why the snow wont built up too much and cause an even bigger avalanche, this way they can control it so it doesnt hurt anyone
I almost forgot the name of the video halfway through, luckily they threw it in again to remind me.
I DID THE SAME THING HAHA +xXDauntlessRonXx
originally there were 5 min of ads in the middle
😂😂

"it's not even big!" *big avalanche comes* "Oh"
First I was like, "That's not that big...", but then it triggered the rest of the snow and I though "holy fucking shit".
Me too haha!
LOL IRL
Well it ~was~ from hell…
It's amazing how Fresh Thick Powder like snow can resemble a Lava river flowing down a mountain. Nature is beautiful

up to like :40 i was like "this is a wimpy avalanche. why did i watch this" and then it set off and was sickk
"And THIS is why we can't have nice things" said Mountain to the snow.
Wow! That avalanche had so much momentum that from 1:08 to 1:14 it started to run uphill.
I'm hope Gandalf wasn't up there.
Law of fluids in spate. Spated fluids may flow uphill and go in different directions, heither to not expected.

Hell will freeze over before they have an avalanche that big
i don't know why but i love the way the mountain looks like it shatters it's like.. beautiful
Yes, I agree. Quite surreal.
the ski patrol who go along and blast the snow must be some of the most bad-ass ppl in the world
It's the music which scares you more than the avalanche
hell just turned out to be a very cold place
This guys is an absolute beauty

Such a beautiful sight when the base just starts cracking like glass and then shoots off the cliff. wow.
the way the snow splits is amazing
up to 0:40 i was like "nothing really is happening" then i see all the cracks in the snow and i instantly changed my mind 5/5
At first I was just like, yeah that looks alright, just a.. OMGWTFBBQ! It looked like the whole bloody mountain was going down.. Awesome capture!
its . . . . . . . . . . . . BEAUTIFUL!!!
thank you for posting this, it is so educational.
At first I was like, "Yeah, I could out ski that shi... Wow! Maybe not!
Avalanche from hell?
Hell must have finally frozen over!!!!!!!
:D
Hell is not always the firey furnace as preched by religious preachers of fire and damnation.
this is an Avalanche from heaven...An avalanche from hell would be more like a hot volcano spewing lava and debris...
Avalanche from heaven...
Reminds me of when my uncle Bobby's coveralls split down the side bobbing for apples at the farmhouse when i was 11 - that was more of a flab-o-lanche though.
If this avalance was from hell, the snow would be melted by now. :P
Hell is the last place you'll find one of these
Holy, shit, didnt think it was much at first. That is a huge one. Glad they disapated some what of the risk for back country.
at first I was disappointed, but then...
THE BEAST WAS UNLEASHED!
Trinity and Beyond soundtrack, specifically the nuclear cannon segment. Great music to a great vid :-)
Ah yes, because smaller avalanches are positively saintlike.
hidochan; That was a canon being fired. Look closely at the shaded part of the slope you can see it detonate. They do this all over the world to trigger avalanches to make it safer for skiers, climbers, boarders, etc.
I've seen it over and over. Its 2019 and still impressive as van be
NO it's not. It's 2022
Gandalf's been fighting Balrog's again...
What a monster... they should make a class 5 category just for slides like that.
Right before I went through my divorce I went to hell and this avalanche was there. So you can trust them when they say its from hell.
thats one sick avalanche :s
starts out small but gets bigger
It is so big it looks more like a "river of snow"!!!
Avalanches are like a cold volanic eruption hahaha
holy cow, it's like the whole mountain is an avalanche
Love the sound effects.
it is actually from an atomic bomb video ruclips.net/video/UTdy1Yp1h5A/видео.html
The first thing that came up my mind was.. milkshake.
That is really amazing and that it was so well video'd!
Cant believe this video is from 2006
Fr Fr I’m his kid on god
i hope that copy Right credits were mentioned for the movie trinity and beyond after all that music played here was for the 280mm cannon in that movie
True there was a charge that initiated this slide, but this was NOT control. This was a couple dudes fucking around causing a MASSIVE slide. This was done in a "National" park. They were disciplined. Amazing!
I knew it! as soon as I said "Well that's not so bad" Ka-roomf! "Oh Sh**! There goes the mountain!"
was driven along driven along. Oh look honey look at the small avalanche... OH SHIT HONEY! RUN FOR YOUR FUCKING LIVES!!!!!!
At first I'm like, that thing is tiny!! And then all of a sudden the whole thing cracked and and I'm like "holy +%@$!!!!". They hadda szoom out XD
It looked like an impossibly fast glacier towards the end
imagine snowboarding, gettin caught in the middle of that. haha just, "...shit"
Damn. Seriously, what the heck? Cool video!
Yeh they start the avalanches using what is basically a big gun. They monitor any high risk areas and stop the snow building up, so there is less risk of massive avalanches. However this time, I think they left it a bit too late...
i always thought hell was hot. you know like the expression
you don't stand a snowballs chance in hell
that was effed... I was at first like, oh.. that aint so big.... then BAM!!! the whole thing gave way... holy!!
watching it pour around obstacles like a river is terrifying.
This mountain wants to move away ...
Wow. I expected expansion but did not expect the entire valley.
the same part of my brain that loves cracking the top of a creme caramel goes berzerk at 00:40
Not from hell, human intervention actually. Spectacular 👀
Ripped the audio straight outta trinity and beyond lmao
i love the part on the end where it almoast looks lake a glacier commin down the mountain.
These awesome powers of nature are beautiful, just like lava.
I love snowboarding, but if I ever go to New Zealand, it will now be for fly fishing only.
that would be a sic ride after the avalanche was gone
looks like a river flowing
it's good work. congratulation....
Bonus points for using music from "The Atomic Bomb Movie". brings back memories of high school social studies class...
true, i was disapointed at first but i watched it out and nearly pissed my pants
dude, that avalanche is ufckin vile
The whole mountian comes down it looks like a river of snow!
Is there snow in hell!?!?
I was honestly also thinking that
There has to be, heat rises. And in some depictions, the devil is seen laying on a bitterly cold frozen lake.
Yea man, dante says the devil in encapsulated in ice
YES!This is an Avalanche!
This is one of the many avalanches that where done to make Shaun White's Halfpipe :)
that really reminded me, for some reason, of a tsunami of snow.
apparently thats how mulan defeated the huns :D
Would not want to be climbing that mountain when that goes down
they started the avalanche so that no snowboarder or skier would set it off...
Survivabilty: zero.
That is one of the most amazing yet scariest tings I have ever seen. Fucking awesome though!
at first i was like this, and now im like this

it looked like a load of cement runnin down ha
I wanna be the first one to go tubing on an avalanche :)
It's like a big river of snow.

wow.. just 8o wow. this is mother nature at her finest marvel. The power, the awe! music is over the top.. but i like it :P
It's funny that the mountain right next to it is the one they used to shoot Mount Doom in Lord of the Rings
this is what a river of snow would look like. literally its a river of snow larger than many real rivers
quite beautiful a the rivers of snow.
I am bad Pokemon. I was sleeping under snow, but you woke me up and now I'm gonna destroy the World!
if they didnt, sking resorts would become mortuaries.
it looks like GIANT vanilla ice cream lol =D
Yeah at 1st I was like "You could totally ski out of that things way... NEVERRR MIND..."
the whole mountain just went ... *insane
people do that all around the world that why the snow wont built up too much and cause an even bigger avalanche, this way they can control it so it doesnt hurt anyone
It's just like in Mulan!
Looks monstrous, like a volcano, just with snow.
