  • Old No: 7 is very young stuff suitable for ice and/or mixing with soda or coke !
For sipping, Gentleman Jack is a far better option expressing the JD style better and with more complexity.

I just visited the JD distillery. The only difference between Old No 7 and Gentleman, is that they run the Gentleman through the sugar maple charcoal TWO times. so it goes through for 12 days instead of 6. It makes a world of difference!

"best selling" just means that lots of people drown it in fizzy soft drinks all over the world because it's a recognized brand like Coca Cola. Vodka is probably even more "best selling", but it has no flavor at all and no sipping value (I do drink vodka).
I just sampled a JD sampler pack - No7, then Gentleman Jack, then Single Cask. Sure, it's totally drinkable, but DEFINITELY airfix glue! Washed it down with the "ye ole standby" Maker's Mark - it's an order of magnitude better even compared to JD Single Cask. IMHO, of course :)

Buying a bottle of Gentleman's Jack on impulse when I had planned to grab myself a bottle of No. 7 is what opened my eyes to the world of whiskey for the first time.
Before then I thought that whiskey was just for if you didn't want to bloat yourself on a massive volume of beer during the night out with your mates. Trying something that wasn't the complete bottom shelf for the first time was quite the revelation.

I just tried this for the first last week. Airplane glue, yes. I added a drop of water in my cup and let it sit a while. Big difference. It got sweet, lost the glue note and was pretty good.

I am quite fond of the no frills Old No.7 standard myself. Love the flavor profile and EVERY variation of Jack Daniel's I've ever tried as well. Gentleman Jack is absolutely delicious too. Had a rare bottle of limited edition Rye a good four years or so back. Was incredible. Now for the first time trying the standard run JD Rye Straight Whiskey at 45%.... Unmistakable distillery character that is Jack Daniels present immediately on the nose and palate----notes of rye bread, banana bread, caramel, sugary spice fruit, sugary smoke, an almost licorice note creeps in too. These flavors morph and open up upon a teaspoon of GOOD water in to a healthy dram of this 90 proof rye....
VERY enjoyable and quite complex for what seems to be a now standard shelf option in the Jack Daniel's range of whiskey........

Hi Ralfy! I live right down the road from the Jack Daniels distillery. Beautiful place and quaint little town. Interesting note is that the county where this is located is a "dry county" meaning you can't buy what they make there! Not only that but you cant even sample it at the distillery! A bit of hypocrisy there if you will! Never been a JD fan but then I'm just starting out in my journey so I'll keep an open mind. Thanks for your review! CHEERS!

Ralfy, would you say that given the fact that Gentleman Jack is far better than No7. That it would be a bit sacreligious to use it in a mixed drink? That its on a level far above that duty and it should be enjoyed neat or with water and savoured like you show here? Asking out of curiosity as I have no background. Asking as well because you gave it what I would consider a relatively high mark for a mass produced spirit. Thanks!

If Jack Daniels was good enough of Frank Sinatra, its good enough for me. Love old number 7 stirred with ice, strianed and served on the rocks with in a chilled low ball glass. Taste wonderful with a nice smocky cigar flavored electric cigarette liquid. Hits the spot in the winter and works well in a whiskey sour in the summer. Haven't tried the gentleman's jack yet, but if its "light years better" than old number 7 than I'll give it a try.

I recently tried the JD sampler pack - No.7, Gentleman Jack and Single Barrel... Didn't enjoy at all, definitely solventy, even the "premium" bottles. Behind that - cloying one-dimensional vanilla and sweetness. That's just me, I am not questioning others' experience.
So I picked up 2 bottles with black labels that look like No.7 imitations - Ezra Brooks 90 proof and Evan Williams Black Label (43%). These are KY straight bourbons and each bottle's just about half-price vs. No.7. And I am so thoroughly enjoying them. I love how there's a malty tangy/fruity note (like in Scotch) behind the sweetness, none of the rubbing alcohol harshness and I only add water to access more flavors (not to dial back the harshness). I am new to bourbons and ryes (as I am to malts), and I have some quality bottles, but I love finding a bottom shelf diamond in the rough like that, you know, things that I can offer to guests on the rocks or as mixer without cringing, yet still enjoy neat. In a way these 2 bourbons even seem to scratch the same itch as the sweet Aberlour 12 does for me.

So I guess we still have the Scots (and the English, Welsh, and Irish) to thank for having a hand in crafting American whiskey.

Just take your time, mate, and enjoy the experience. I've been drinking and appreciating crap whisky for many years and it comes slowly. The trick is to, as Pacman said, take a slight smell and just see what you think at first. Even if you're not picking up 'notes', so to speak, just register the smell and think about it. When you pick up another whisky, you'll be like "aah, this is different to the other one" and more subtle things will come out. Right now, I'm enjoying a nice glass of glue :)

Ralfy! I’ve tried Uncle Nearest and not many others of its kind but must say it’s my favorite whiskey and wonder if you’ve had it and your thoughts on it if so? Bless you highly and my highest regards to you. You’re brilliant!

Ralfy, do you plan to or have you done a review of Hudson single malt ? This is an American single malt made in upstate New York.

Will this Gentleman Jack of 10 years ago still taste similar to todays Gentleman Jack?

. . . no, liquor can change over time due to ingredients and industrial practice, there are better options out there including Old Forrester.

A lot of scotch whiskey use old bourbon casks, and some of the cheaper blended scotch really do have that gluey bourbon essence but they still beat Nr07 for mixing.

I've always wondered what the real difference between bourbon, whiskey and brandy is. Can you enlighten me!?

Just found your channel and being from Montana, thought it was funny that I really wanted to see your take on Ole number 7..........but missed peanuts, glue?? yes, I don't drink JD. I much prefer Woodford if its a bourbon. By the way, what is a Frappleberry, heard of a snozberry... but frappleberry? and what does red fruit taste like... and what is red fruit.....
great Channel... I have some watching to do, congrats on the many episodes you have done.

@rab631 sorry to bother you, but still Jack Daniels isn't bourbon, it's a Tennessee Whiskey. Jack Daniel's is dripped slowly - drop-by-drop - through ten feet of firmly packed charcoal (made from hard sugar maple) before going into new charred oak barrels for aging. This special process gives Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey its rare smoothness. It's this extra step - charcoal mellowing - that makes Jack Daniel's a Tennessee Whiskey.

I'm a whiskey drinker and i can't drink old no7, charcoal filtering can't save it it's still rough. The single barrel is great though.

I wish you would have given your take on old no 7. I know you would dump all over it but ppl who enjoy Jack dont drink it regularly for the "gentleman" taste. It's a great whiskey to reminisce.

Your channel says your in the USA, I`m over in the UK, In most of the supermarkets here there is very little choice of bourbon whiskeys, Jack Daniels, Jim Beam, Wild Turkey, Buffalo Trace Whiskey, Red Eye, Southern Comfort { If that counts } And that`s about it unless you go to a dedicated off licence store { What I believe you call a liquor store } But there are not as many of those around in rural areas now because of the supermarkets domination of the market
