Your AWESOME!
Audio quality on the new microphone sounds incredible!
Thanks for posting this! This may have to be my next mic!
What a beautiful mic..
I JUST bought this -- from Sweetwater no less -- though for music not VO. Hasn't arrived yet.
Love their catalogs man! So nice to have it in your hands. Also, I'm with you on not eating candy.
Huge fan, thankyou for posting content
What a NICE microphone. Would love to see a video of you going through your assortment of mics and talking about different uses for each.
It's always so fun to watch these! The new mic sounds amazing :D
Loved this! Awesome to hear the quality testing. Would actually LOVE to see a run-down of all the mics you have, talking about the different properties and maybe what kinds suit different voices and ranges! Thanks for the video!
Ik this comment's from 7 years ago,...but THIS PLZ!
@@blastbeatsincorporated7875 for what it's worth, I am still wanting this video lol
Sweet video. you are amazing james.
I currently have a AT2020 for recording videos and livestreaming. I think The Origin will be my next upgrade.
James you totally sold me on that microphone :) . Me and my buddy just bought two !!!!
That microphone sounds astounding! That's one more Mic added to my voice over wish list. On another note, what Mic and interface would you recommend for a voice over artist on a budget? I currently use a Shure Sm-48 handheld dynamic microphone and I would like to upgrade before I head off to college.
The simplest set up would be a Apogee MIC plugged into either an iPhone or iPad using a program called Twisted Wave. The mic is still in the $200. Range I believe. There may be others out there that are cheaper that plug in to devices like that but I've found Apogees to have the best sound. If you look in my video archives on RUclips you'll find a review I did of it. Hope this helps!
Thank you very much for the suggestion! I have seen you in a few videos talking about the Apogee MIC. However, I do not have a device that can use that type of microphone. I was actually able to find an inexpensive pre-amp, called the iRig Pre, right after I posted my comment on your website. The Pre-Amp actually connects any XLR Mic to my Windows computer and Android phone, and also provides 48 volts of Phantom Power. Thank you once again for the microphone suggestion.
It has a surprisingly warm sound to me.
Thanks for the unboxing! I've read about the Origin and the positive response has been phenomenal. The mic comparisons have blown me away. The Origin captures audio that's organic and natural sounding without (much) added color. I'm considering this mic and another to replace my BLUE Bluebird.
hey can you do a comparison video - Aston Origin vs Rode NT1A?
that mic is sooo dope james!!!!
Just found you doing a Search on the new Aston Origin. I have Subscribed to your Channel too. Really great watching and listening to all of this. I work behind the scenes recording. Interested in your set-up and such. I'm surprised you don't really care for the 416. Do you use any Dynamics? Just curious. M
Man, I can't stop hearing the similarities between you and Michael J Fox.
Now I can't either. Haha
You need to keep making vlogs JAT !
I keep forgetting how talented you are. My brother keeps sending me your videos. That mic looks like something that I should put in my mic locker.
Candy in the boxes?! Even if you don't eat it, you gotta admit that's a pretty "sweet" gesture!
Ya get it? "Sweet" gesture? Cuz it's candy...?
...
I'll see myself out.
Five minutes later.....oh HA! I get it!
I see what you did there.
Dude you are my all time favorite voice actor . hands down , sweet mics man :) I was watching a Lego movie called Legend of Doom or something like that during dinner the other night and I am 20 though lol I still love LEGOS haha I was telling my mom about hey that sounds like the same guy that does Ratchet , Did you by any chance played Flash , if so dude it was awesome , I love all of your work so keep doing what your doing man !
Yes, that's me as Flash😃
That's awesome man :)
When you test a mic, PLEASE include the processor(s) you are using and any settings that may be relevant to get THAT sound from any mic you test/compare!
Sorry, this was just a simple unboxing and I have had other videos that go over my studios equipment so it didn't occur to me to add it here. But for your info I am putting it through a UA LA-610 Pre Amp with no compression or limiting. It goes straight into my Apogee Ensemble Thunderbolt into Pro Tools 12, so there is no treatment to it in any way other than the pre-amp. As a Voice-Actor I rarely put it through additional processing because the engineers on the other end like to flavor things there own way. Hope that helps you.
I would love to have a mic for my own to use it for practicing voice demos. It's just that it's a little pricy to get. :(
Hopefully someday I get it.
You can get the Rode NT1A pack for around £160! It gives you the mic, shock mount, pop filter and xlr cable. I did have to save up for it, but it works well and I put together a small sound proof "booth" for it. I also had to buy an audio interface in order to connect it to my computer, as well as a mic stand. I don't mean to self promo, but there's a video somewhere on my channel of me using it. If you don't want that, there are plenty of USB microphones that work great too. If you're looking for auditions for unpaid work, then Behind The Voice Actors is a great place to go. Good luck with your career!
Wow! Thank you so much for telling me that! That really helps. I've been going on Behind the Voice Actors for years now. Once I get a mic, I will defiantly make an account. Thanks again for the tip! :)
No problem, I'm always happy to help! :)
Hi James, just want to say first I'm a massive fan, but I also need some advice. I love voice acting. I have since I first discovered the world of it. But I was told by many, almost all, of my performance teachers that if I wanted to do voice over, I'd have to also do stage/camera acting as well. I was just wondering how often you still engage in either of the two other forms(excluding your shows). Thank you so much for your time and even more for being such a huge inspiration to me and so many others!
Thx Rob, though I started in stand-up comedy I quickly moved into radio which was the best training ground for me and many of my fellow voice actors. While I believe stage and on camera work can benefit someone I don't think it is essential to voice acting. Storytelling is the key, what worlds can you open to others with the stories you tell with only your voice that's the key. Not trying to contradict those giving you advice but I know plenty of people including myself that found very little help in my VO career from stage or screen. To be honest most stage and screen actors have a hard time with voice acting from what I have seen. Could it be helpful...? Absolutely but it's not essential to a successful VO career in my opinion. Best of luck to you!
+James Arnold Taylor, thank you so much for the reply and great advice! It's very reassuring to hear I, and others who read your reply, can still move forward with a love for VO without having to be trained to perfection in other fields that may not suit them as well. Thank you again for your time.
What other equipment do I need to use one of these. Would it be worth it for like RUclips and Facebook Live videos? Can it even be used for that? I really dig it.
Who else closes their eyes and imagines Ratchet saying what you hear from James?
James, how does it handle proximity? Which mic would you say it's the most similar to?
Very well with close up and far away, I'd say it's similar to my Neumann TLM 103
I thought u didn’t need a pop filter with that mic?
I remember you mentioning an AT (Audio Technica) microphone in a older video. What's your opinion on the current one you own? I think you even briefly showed one.
Heh, AT... Almost like JAT. James (the) Audio Technico?
I use an AT 4050 but haven't used any of their newer ones. Sorry I can't answer about any but that one which I like quite a bit. I've lent it to a friend for a few years so I don't use it much.
James Arnold Taylor
Thanks for the quick answer and keep up the good work, James! :)
Can Somebody link me a good long micstand with link please ?
Aston vs C1. Are they comparable or completely different animals? is one better for characters vs "announcer"?
good question I love them both perhaps a toss up
+James Arnold Taylor
Thank you very much
Hey I'm just starting off in voice over acting I know i have talent and I can do over 200+ right now. How do I start out and get out there. America needs ms James
I've been watching a lot of your content. Great stuff. I've recently started focusing in on my voice performance and I'm working to build a career in it (currently doing voice work for videos I produce in corporate and other marketing locally). I saw this video about the Aston and been trying to weigh in about the mic (considering purchasing a good condenser mic to use rather than my shotgun mic). My question, now that you've had a few months to use the mic, would you still recommend it? Does it hold up the quality and sound? Thanks in advance for any feedback (from you or the forum of fans).
Hey There sorry for the delayed response, been awhile since I was on this video comment board. I still really like the Aston Origin, I use it at the end of my show Clone Wars Conversations here on my channel and you can hear it for yourself in those section where I and my guest read a scene from a movie or book together, they are also the mic I use on The JAT Show which is here as well. I don't use them in my booth much because they stay at my video studio for the shows there but while the video studio is not as set for sound recording I get a very good rich sound from them and truly enjoy them still. I think they are great for the price. Hope that helps and thanks!
Is this the quick release you mention in the video, James? (The On-Stage Qk-2C?) I hope so, because I got 4 after watching this and I absolutely love them! I switch and experiment with my mics much more often now. It even works with my Ipad mic stand adapter. Here's a link for anyone who might be interested:

How do you not eat candy lol???
I ate enough as a kid to make up for the rest of my life : )
Can you show the instructions of how to build this thing? Also when we meet in person for the first time. I have a list of voices i wrote in piece of paper for you to do voices you've done in BTVA. Would that be ok with you Obi wan (Ratchet)?
+James Arnold Taylor That seems fair, candy is something I can live without but I'll eat it when accessible. :)
+David Ruiz sorry I don't know what you mean by instruction to build this thing... What "thing?" The microphone doesn't require assembly. You plug it in like any other mic. As far as the voices go I'm not sure what you mean there either. Sorry just not understanding what you're asking.
What im trying to say is that is there an instruction guide that came along? Also i wrote i list on a piece of paper of the characters you voiced except they have clips on them in BTVA. Is what im saying. When i show you it you'll understand. It's called James A Taylor Voice clip of characters that have voice clips. That's the list i was talking about.
I hate these mics.... no warmth and brings out such harshness in vocals in the 3-7k range, only a tad bit smoother then a spark
Sorry your ears don't like them. I still enjoy them, and have found some mics that others love just don't work for my voice and some do... It's all to each his or hers own. Best to you.
