Ddr5 will be main stream in 2025 or after that... it's going really expensive for first 5 yrs just like ddr4...
always older is expensive in ram, ddr4 is cheaper than ddr3 and ddr3 cheaper than ddr2

3770 with 16gig ddr3. i know i saw gen 4 prices as expensive, but can't remember cost for early 16 gig ddr4. and my desired capacity was initially 32gig to double everything (8c8t cpu) but 64gig is looking more doable- maybe even 128 at the cusp of ddr5 release....
It's funny that even though id never use this much memory capacity or speed, the numbers really make me want to get one when it launches
But later on, you realized you wouldn't even be able to use all of it anyway.

graphics cards are expensive rn. by the time the graphics card shortage is dealt with, we could buy ddr5 ram. I'm very curious how Intel's UHD graphics will benefit from ddr5 ram. My 750ti uses gddr5 so I am very optimistic.

If the first motherboard you purchase that supports DDR5 only handles DDR5-4800, you won't be able to upgrade your RAM down the road without getting yet another motherboard. Additionally the best performing DDR5, like DDR5-6400 will be very, very expensive at launch, and probably just average memory after a few years.
If you do content creation, animations, simulations, you will need all the RAM capacity/bandwidth you can get. Gaming is just a small cut of the pie.
The future of machine learning is going to be insanely RAM intensive. I max out my 64GB from my home workstation all the time. Cascading Semi-Random Feature generation with stacked autoencoders is insanely RAM intensive for greatly reduce GPU computing time.

Its a shitty tech when early versions of DDR5 will be slower than fastest DDR4 ?!?!?! DDR5 should release at start speeds of 7000+ MHz in order for it to be viable !!!!!
I'd rather not. Most consumers can just buy a DDR4 system because they wouldn't even need that much specs...

It will be at least another year or two before I even think about building a desktop rig. Given how DDR4 prices compared to DDR3 in its first few years, I'll probably buy a DDR5 compatible motherboard but install DDR4 and upgrade the ram around 2024 or 25.
You'll have to stick with select Intel CPU's to be both DDR5 and DDR4 backward compatible. AMD hasn't released any DDR5 CPU's yet, and would be doubtful they'll include DDR4 backward compatibility.
