    One of my teachers said that we could use a coat of clear gesso as a ground for colored pencils to give the paper tooth. I use Golden's Self Leveling Gel as a glue and as a replacement for "dimensional magic" and things like that. I compared 5 brands with Goldens and they all did the same thing and the Goldens is cheaper in the long run. I just put it in a small bottle with a tip.

    14:00 A bit of trivia for you: We had the Golden Rep come to one of our Watercolor meetings once and he said that the Goldens used to be called modeling paste, then when someone was doing a new run of labels, they mis-spelled it as Molding Paste and they had already printed thousands by the time they discovered it so that's how the name got changed to Molding Paste because it would have cost too much to fix it.

I love the fact you try to show there is an alternative, for us just starting out the cost is a lot. The interference paints look so pretty, I think maybe that will be my next expensive purchase. Guess I ran out of my limit of characters. Anyway those paints would get so thick and I didn't know how to thin them out. Learned the hard way that just because they are water soluble it doesn't mean you can add water to them. Ruined a few jars that way. Now I am starting to understand how to make my own because I have all the metallic pigments. I can make my own. It used to be such a challenge to get glitter to adhere to the surface as well. Whew! Thanks so much for your valuable teaching videos. It has given me the courage to try and ask questions in the art supply stores where I was so intimidated because I wasn't a "true" artist. I guess we all are in our hearts☺️

      +knitting storing paints in a box upside down will seal out the air especially if stored for a long time. the most important thing is to not let them freeze, it will ruin them.

    Very informative video! Glad it uploaded. I have question for AAC about mediums. I like to buy my scrapbook albums at the thrift stores - brand new ones only - but I don't always like the cover. I was going to sew covers from fabric but I also like to paint and I think I'd prefer to paint them. So, what should I use as a base coat? I was thinking Gesso but not sure if I'm on the right track or not. Thanks - Crafty Violet

    I loved this, thank you so much! I also loved your explanation of frugal alternatives. I will be picking up some caulking! I started out craft painting and my big go to was lightweight spackle for texture. Also since craft snow (which can be used on a painting) can be pricey, I would build with the spackle then top it with a thin layer of snow for the texture. I've given you a like and I've subscribed, thank you for being a fellow frugalist!

    This was difficult to absorb as products jiggled and moved quickly but I managed to gather information. Fortunately I've used mediums and have some already but I hoped to find out what exactly is considered acrylic 'binder', which types are most affordable, and what all it accomplishes. Is it what I've been using under another name or is it entirely different with specific limitations? I use plain Matt Liquitex gel medium and thin it as needed for most projects but I'd like to use fresh plant matter in my work and seal plant pieces prior so they won't dry and crumble while painting over them. A book I'm reading says to use acrylic binder so I wondered if it is something I already have or do I need something entirely different?

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  4 года назад

      I think any acrylic medium will work. I think resin artists use gel medium or mod podge to seal leaves and flowers before adding in resin. What you have already should work.

      erika m that is a thinner, it makes the paint more transparent and dry slower. I did manage to include it in my printable chart: thefrugalcrafter.wordpress.com/2015/04/28/the-frugal-crafters-guide-to-acrylic-mediums-chart-included/

    Hey Lindsay! :) Great video again! I was wondering if you can use turpentine as a medium on a canvas for acrylics? I know it's a thinning agent made for Oil Paints, but I was wondering if you can use it for acrylics. Like the way Bob Ross used liquid white or liquid clear on his canvas before painting. Do let me know :) Thank you for another good video :)

      xxangelgirlxx00 they are not compatible. Water to acrylics would be like turpentine for oils.

    This was the perfect video Lindsay! I have a lot of products but I had no idea there was so many other ones. Great video thanks.
    I wanted to let you know I sent HP a suggestion about making there ink for crafters so it doesn't smear. The next day I got a phone call from them saying they are sending my request to the appropriate people. That is a good sign I hope. My husband said they like ideas to grow the company in new ways. ( Not exactly in those words ) So I guess we will see. :-)

    Hi Lindsay! I have TONS of bottles of old acrylic paints and discovered the other day they will hardly come out of the bottles! Some paints come out in clumpy strings. Do I just throw these away, OR, can they be revived? AND can I make these OPEN fluid acrylics everyone seems to be using? Thanks in advance for your help!!

      Christina Furner-Webber You will probably have to toss the clumpy acrylics, they likely got frozen at some point. The bottles do not have the shelf life the tubes do BUT as a last ditch try you can scoop the paint out and try to mix it with a palette knife and if it mixes creamy again use it quickly. If not toss them. It happens with tube paints a lot so don't stock up on more than you can use in a year. You can use blending medium or water plus glycerin to make your acrylics more open:)

      Great!! I actually have bottles where the paint is hard as a rock. At least when I'm bored I could maybe use them to make some kind of percussion noise? LOL. And thanks to you I have a brand new bottle of glycerin. Yay! I only bought the gouache after watching your vid on reinking a stamp pad. I've done some research on this stuff and it seems as if a lot of peeps can't explain exactly what gouache is? Ha, ha! Maybe didn't dig far enough. I at least have a rough idea. Thanks so much!!

    Great information, Lindsey. Just wish you could have held some of the bottles still on camera, so the labels were readable... Maybe a little too much Java, lol. ;). Thanks so much for all you do, you are Wonderful.
