As a beginner artist, I can't express enough how much I appreciate these videos. I have learned so much from watching your tutorials, and I am constantly impressed with your dedication to teaching and all the efforts you put into sharing your knowledge. Thank you so much!
A few helpful tips for you. ..1) don't mix your gel with water if you are going to collage with it, your paper will wrinkle 2) a medium can be a sealer but if you plan to keep the artwork I would add an archival sealer 3) Mod Podge isn't a gel, its fluid. It can be used similarly for paper collage but leaves a sticky film and states in the directions that it needs a sealer. I personally don't like or use it 4) mediums were created to change how acrylic paints behave such as become more transparent or extend drying time along with their adhesive uses 5) check out the iridescent gel, its loads of fun
Used Mod Podge once, didn't realize it needed a sealer, but found out the hard way that it stays sticky permanently. It would probably be useful making one's own "sticky notes" or something to catch all the cat fur, but I'll never buy it again.
Just a note, Mod Podge is PVA glue, a little more runny, and maybe with some additives, but it is not acrylic. You'll notice the difference in the result when mixed with acrylic paint and if the climate is cold and humid, as it will stay sticky to the touch. The bottle actually tells you to use acrylic sealant to get rid of the tackines. Also, acrylic medium is, AFAIK, more glossy than matt, and the matt finish is achieved through additives. That makes matt finish acrylic mediums an gels a little bit cloudy sometimes.
Very helpful and I finally understand what a gel medium is and how to use it. About to try my first decoupage project with a gel medium. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for sharing your expertise on different kinds of mediums and to use them. I am a beginner, your video is really great help. God bless you!
I just found your channel. Love it...I am just getting into my art and mixed media is one of the art forms that I want to try...Thanks again for your amazing video I look forward to more...HUGS from Sunny warm Nova Scotia...I add where I am from so you know how far you are reaching
Thank you, I was just given some Multi Medium Matte (Ranger) but had never used it before and wanted ideas on how it could be used. This has really helped.
This is done so well. I have never seen a video.this comprehensive and explained so great. I personally found it to be very beneficial. Thank you sooomuch
This was the best video to help me become familiar with all the gel mediums out there and narrow down what suits each purpose. I was so overwhelmed by the myriad of similar products available. This was such a helpful video, now I can save some $$ and just get exactly what I need. Thank you for making this video. Very informative and so helpful. I'm subscribing today.
yes I saw your question on the other video and what I used there is modelling paste. I have a whole video dedicated to paste it's called All About Modelling Paste. the products in this video are meant more for gluing although the thicker ones can be put through a stencil as well
Karen - I don't know if this is an ignorant question but can you mix the gel mediums with spray inks or reinkers to colour them ? Also same question for texture and crackle pastes. Thanks! I'm new to your channel and have found your videos super!
I've mixed it with dry materials and even acrylic paints, It does work with inks for example you ink the mat and then add modelling paste or gel and it turns it to the color of the ink. so I assume it would be the same with the re-inkers as they are concentrated. In terms of sprays I'm not 100% as they are more liquidy. It would be a thing to experiment with. The spray would have to be very pigmented or concentrated I believe. and no question is ignorant, we learn by experimenting and asking
Just found you ,so thankful ! This is the BEST video i have seen on the different mediums ,you have saved my sanity ,i have a lot to catch up on ,thanks so much .
i will thank you! I just bought the dylusions creative journal and I am at a loss as to what to do in it, but I think these videos will help. Do you also have a video on collage and craft paper?
I have all sorts of videos. on gesso, sprays, modelling paste and also videos in the dylusions journal. you'll have to go through my channel as I don't know what you like. I also always list all products underneath my videos as well with links.
Hi Karen. Please help me. I’m more confused then ever now. I’ve always journaled but I started art journaling 6mths ago. I love using tissue paper napkins and other elements in my art journal. Ive been using mod podge but it’s not really working that well. I use inks and acrylic paints and stuff to. Which one would you recommend for this kind of art journaling. I was also wondering if these brands are the same as the U.S. art supply brand called impasto that they have on Amazon? It’s a large tub for on 12 or 13.00 which for me is a great price. If you could look at it on Amazon and tell me what you think I would greatly appreciate it. I love you videos. You are an amazing artist.
Mod podge is not bad although I prefer artist grade gel medium. If its just tissue paper, napkins or paper I use Liquitex matte medium. However I went to look at the impasto one you said, it looks like the gels I used here. It should work although I've never used that brand as I don't live in the US. Since its inexpensive I would give it a try and see if you're happier than with mod-podge. If not then maybe get Liquitex, golden or finnabair. I prefer matte so it doesn't shine but there's also glossy finishes.
@@KerenTamir thank you so much. I’ve been so confused. May I ask where your from? For some reason I thought you were in the U.S. things are not that great here since the new administration took over. It’s very worrisome. I’ve been art journaling to keep my mind off of things.
Thankyou very much for this tutorial. I am a beginner to mix media and I was just going to waste my money on a medium I did not need thanks to you, . I am going over to watch part 2 x x
Absolutely the best instructional video I've seen on the elements of mixed-media. You are authentic and concise and I love the way you incorporate minute details that are soooo important.♥♥
Wow Keren!!!!! Thank you for the clarification...I almost went and bought even MORE because I didnt think I had the right product....I am finding that I probably have bought an overabundance just due to the confusing nature of the names of all the products!!!! Thank you for taking the time to make this video...it is STILL in 2020 educating us~
You are so welcome Dawn, so glad to hear. these videos I made in 2017 are essential. There's one for almost each medium because there's so many people that just feel overwhelmed with so many different names and products. I'm truly so glad to hear!
Thank you Karen. It is an amazing video, clear explanation about the different gels, and how to use them as well. I look forward to watch the next videos.
Gel medium. Each company has different consistency of glue. Some companies make a better consistency of glue. Mod podge is not good for reborning. The medium helps paint to stick and protects painted surfaces. Great video
yes I actually just did that in a video. its an art journal with squares in the background. you can use 3D gel for that as its thick to use through the stencil. others will run through underneath
Thanks for such a great explanation on how to use gel medium, you are right it was so confusing before your video THANKS!!! I have used Mod Podge and the problem is that even when it is dry if you use it on a journal the pages stick together in parts of the page and you will see the brush strokes. Is the Gel Medium not sticky after dry, I see you use it in your journal do you seal it for it to not stick together after you close the journal after dry?
HI Ana, the gel medium is better quality for sure in comparison to Mod Podge and smoother. However it could get sticky depending on what you use with it. the gloss one tends to stick more than the matte, that's why I like using matte gel medium, or matte medium. if you use matte modge podge and not semi-gloss it will be better. There is a wax sealant that you can add to your pages so it stops them from sticking. This is the one sold at amazon: amzn.to/2FaygmB
Thank you so much for explaining the gel media. I'm a beginner and so confused about gesso, gel and so an and it help me a lot to order not the same things ;)
Thanks so much for explaining in detail. Please do a video about modelling paste or texture paste. I have a modelling paste brand campus, which is very fluid. I tried to use it for stencilling but it was not good. It went under the stencil.
Shamila I did one for modelling paste, not sure if you browsed through my videos. and texture paste is coming up soon, if you subscribe you should sign up to be notified of my videos. huge giveaway coming soon as well
I noticed matte mod poudge medium has a slight shine to it more like a satin ...not gloss but not as flat as most matte mediums ..thank you for sharing ...From my experience, I can paint over matte but not as well with gloss.
Thank you - this has cleared things up a lot! I'm confused about the beads though; are you using real beads that could be used to make jewelry? Where do you find them so tiny? I love the look they made!
so glad to hear! One of the gels already come with beads. The ones I used are sold that way but you can easily use jewlery beads they give great texture.
Thank you so much for these lessons! I have been very confused prior to watching them. Could you please tell where you purchased the stencil you used in this video, I love the design!
Thank you so much for your videos..I just started mixed media and you are really helping me...I just subscribed...I hope you can do videos on the different types of paint sprays and when to use each type ..ex..shimmertz, distress, etc..thank you
Thank you very much for this very informative video. Now I know better these different products, I know which ones to choose ! it's really very useful ! Maybe today there are still new products? Thanks have a good day 🌼😘
THANKS FOR SHARING SUCH GREAT INFORMATION ABOUT ALL DIFRENT GEL MEDIUM CUZ IM VERY CONFUSED. CUZ I M STARTING THE MIX MEDIA AND I WANT TO LEARN . THANKS FOR SHARING. GOD BLESS HUGS.
Thank you so much for the video. It helps me understand what it is supposed to do with different project. I’ve been wanting to try a photo transfer using matte medium gel that I watched for like 10 years ago. I just didn’t know the brand of the product and where to buy it, and what department in store it should be. Now that I watched your video I’ve seen these products hundred times but didn’t know that was the same product on that tv show I was watching. All I see was GEL MEDIUM and I thought it was just for panting, sometimes I’ve seen it as a glue, so it really confused me even more. I haven’t even think of photo transfer anymore, now I will use it as a glue. Again thank you the search is over. 😘 Sorry for the long comment.
Nice series!! I’m learning quite a bit. Yep, I’ve been so confused with all different brands & names. I use Ranger Matt medium for gluing items with my card making and Glossy Accents while if I’ve learned correctly is a glossy gel. Correct? I’m now getting into journaling.
so glad to hear. Yes the ranger matte medium is for gluing and it acts like the soft gel medium I talked about in the video. The glossy accents is a bit stickier than gel and it is mainly used to make something really glossy. You can also use it as a glue
Very illuminating video indeed!!!Thank you so much..........i have a question though. All these gels are similar to silicone tubes?..:)..just a question....i am new at crafting...
I don't think so but I'm not sure as I haven't use silicone tubes before. the silicone I know is white while these are transparent. but it could be that in different countries its called something else!!
I’m making a resin ocean diorama. I heard that gel medium would turn clear if put on top of resin and it would look like waves when turning clear. I used professional slow drying gel medium. It’s still white, it’s not turning clear and it’s still a little sticky. What did I do wrong? What should I do?
Jacqueline I truly don't know as I've never put it on resin. Gel medium especially the matte one turns clear but I'm not sure if its because you put it on resin or maybe its the brand. what brand did you use? I know that if its slow drying it might take longer than usual. regular gel medium takes 24 hours to dry and thats if its a thin coat, not sure how thick yours is. There's just so many factors
Keren Tamir I used professional slow drying gel medium. The brand is artists loft. I got it at michaels. I used a thick amount. I tried finding videos of people using this brand and I haven’t found anything.
WOW. Ein who is who für Material ...
Given Mahlangu no I don’t think they are the same thing. Although I can’t be sure the formula is probably different. However having said that I would speculate ( as I’ve never tried) that if you let the gel medium dry enough that it becomes tacky then you could add deco foil. But to get to that point you need to check it constantly To make sure that it doesn’t dry up for me because then it won’t work you need to have a surface a little bit tacky. The best advice I can give you is to experiment and see if it does work As of never tried it. I’m only speculating
@Keren Tamir oh okay thank you. The reason why I was asking is because I've seen some people on RUclips using texture paste the transparent gloss one and it seemed to have worked great. So I assumed the gel would probably do the same. Thank you for the feedback 😊
@@givenmahlangu1266 oh ok then it should work as its very similar. different brands have different consistency but the idea is the same. the gel medium acts like glue.
I don't know what ingredient would need to be added to do that. I can dilute but make heavier is out of my expertise. The manufacturer would have those secrets
I have a huge bottle of sax gel medium. Does anyone out there work with it? It claimed to be transparent but it didn’t dry transparent😢I also have a bunch of blick gloss medium too. The only thing I know they will work for is just collating mixed media?
I prefer matte if I"m honest. I don't like gloss medium at all. I'm not familiar with sax gel medium so I can't comment on it but my favorite is Liquitex Matte Medium

Many collage artists say to add water to the gel medium.
Thank you so much! There are a few styles that modge podge is perfect, but I resin over the base first.

THANKS FOR SHARING SUCH GREAT INFORMATION ABOUT ALL DIFRENT GEL MEDIUM CUZ IM VERY CONFUSED. CUZ I M STARTING THE MIX MEDIA AND I WANT TO LEARN . THANKS FOR SHARING. GOD BLESS HUGS.
so glad all your videos helped!!
Ching Scoular so glad to hear. I have a couple of videos on gel transfer specifically. Search through my videos.
Thank you Karen. I just subscribed to your channel.
Thank you so much for all your videos! Could I use E6000 to secure heavier items instead of a heavy gel medium?
I'm not very familiar with E6000, sorry
Nice series!! I’m learning quite a bit. Yep, I’ve been so confused with all different brands & names. I use Ranger Matt medium for gluing items with my card making and Glossy Accents while if I’ve learned correctly is a glossy gel. Correct? I’m now getting into journaling.
so glad to hear. Yes the ranger matte medium is for gluing and it acts like the soft gel medium I talked about in the video. The glossy accents is a bit stickier than gel and it is mainly used to make something really glossy. You can also use it as a glue
Welcome to a whole new interest and possibly a whole new passion, there are so many possibilities.
Thank you so much for this. Yes I was confused. As you mentioned, I have different ones. Also some duplication, by not knowing. Now I know. 😉💗
Thank you, you have helped me understand what I thought was a mine field.
Thank you so much for telling me these things Karen:) I have several kinds of these Gels!! Joyce
yes most people have bought them and don't know what to do with them. experimenting is the best solution!!
great and very informative! thank you.
Can you please explain: (what is a gel transfer)?
I can do even better, I can show you in this video: ruclips.net/video/T7n5WcLt_mA/видео.html or this one ruclips.net/video/rVTMHIiUtRY/видео.html
Thank you both links were extremely helpful!!!!!
Thanks a lot it's really helpful..love the details..
Thank you so much Keren. Thanks for these wonderful tips!!! will help me in my future projects !
Hugs
thanks Monika!!
Good information!
Glad it was helpful!
Very helpful thank you
Thank you🙏❤️
Omg God bless you for this video cutting thru all the b.s that's confusing us!!!
so glad to hear it helped!!
WOW. Ein who is who für Material ...
Oh Ibag I'm not sure what your wrote here and when I tried translating it , it didn't make sense. I hope this video helped you though. take care
Thanks so much for your help 😍
Thank you, very helpful
thank you!!
Fantastic series! Thank you for this
thanks so much!
Modpodge warps my book covers which one of these will not not warp cardboard or book covers.
Hello can I use the 3D gloss gel to apply Deco foil, instead of using the decofoil transfer gel? Are they the same thing?
Keren Tamir I will try it out and I will give you feedback. Thank you again.
Thanks !
Can you make your own heavy gel?
I don't know what ingredient would need to be added to do that. I can dilute but make heavier is out of my expertise. The manufacturer would have those secrets
Thanks for your video it will help me in my future projects ! :)
so glad to hear! thank you
I have a huge bottle of sax gel medium.
Thank you so much.
:) xo
