For me this video was a wealth of information. I’m looking forward to all the others to come. The basics is exactly what I needed. Thank you for taking the time to share all this info with us.
Thank you for making these beginners videos, you are very generous to offer this wealth of information free. I've finally learned the difference between various mediums thanks to you, previously I was so confused and thought I needed to buy a ton of products.

I just started watching your video on modeling paste and saw you struggle a little to get the cap off. I wanted to share a tip with you about something that will solve your problems with stuck on lids. I've used Vaseline for years. You put it around the rings on the lids and you will never have a lid stick again. I use it on glue, paint, alcohol inks and pretty much anything that has a lid with the possibility of sticking, even Kelly and honey jars. Hope this helps. By the way I really like your videos and have just subscribed.
Pam that's brilliant, never thought of it although it makes so much sense. I've heard of saran wrap over the opening before adding the lid but vaseline is brilliant. thanks for sharing this great tip.
I'm new to mixed media and I have been so confused about gesso! I've read so many blogs and "how tos" and no one has explained it as well as you. Thank you so very much! I'm going to watch more of your videos. You have calmed my doubts! ❤
wow I'm do glad to hear! thanks so much!! check out the other All About videos for the other products. if you haven't already as they also help. Like for gel, modeling paste, etc
Such a wealth of useful information. There are so many mediums and paints, and as an amateur just trying to get into this, it's a jungle. THank you for sharing!
Thank you for sharing all these information and answering my questions I really appreciate it. You are very kind. I am a beginner actually I will try it soon.
new subscriber-Outstanding tutorial. I've known about gesso for along time but haven't ever used it on paper, or for that matter mixed media. I'm familiar with using it on canvas. I recently bought a journal and now I can proceed with buying my gesso. Thank you so much for this wealth of information.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! I'm new doing mix media and I was so confused when I went to Michael's and online when it came to what Gesso was, what modeling paste was, etc. Your videos have truly helped me. I subscribed as you're so informative and I still have a lot to learn and I know your videos will help me. Again, thank you for your information and time. 😊
U r so so wonderful Keren... This video was so much needed to me... Am glad to check u and will surely keep learning and taking tips n ideas from your sessions... God bless u, u have made my painting journey more blissful. Love u :)
Thank you so much for this vidio! I have a question. Can the clear gesso be mixed with some stamping color and be still seen through after applying? Or can it be applied after drying and still be seen through? I just would like to give it some color touch, but still see through it. Hope you still read through this messages, even so your vidio is from 4 years ago...Oh which gesso kind do you use for priming? Thank you. I am as well new to it all.
Yes you can mix clear gesso with anything. You can apply ink to your mat and then add gesso and mix. It will change the color. It should be translucent but not sure how much, it depends on the ink. You can also mix with some fluid acrylic or translucent paint and it should do the same thing. I use all gesso's for priming depending on what I"m priming. that's the role of the gesso.
Karen I'd like to thank you for this valuable lesson. I'm new to art media. I fine the way you teach and explain everything helps me to understand why and how. You are my go too. Thank you and blessing's 🥰
Hi, great video, learned a lot. Have a question: with the clear gesso, if you used it over water based ink, say an image I’ve stamped, would it make the image run if painted it over the top?
if it's water based ink gesso will reactivate it. However you can use this product: ldli.co/e/d55zo5 and it will seal it so you can add anything on top.
I also use a heavy gesso to create texture! Makes awesome pages. My question though is: When you use white gesso with paint, and need to take some off with a baby wipe, does it take the gesso away as well? I so appreciate you doing these beginner videos, Karin! Bless you as you want to help us along!!! You are a good teacher and you don't go so fast that it is hare to learn!!! THANKS!
yes you can use gesso to create texture its great for that. If you put paint on top of gesso and remove with baby wipe it might remove some of the gesso. However all you have to do is either apply gesso again on that area or put paint again. It might not always remove the gesso but It might. It all depends on how hard you rub or how wet everything is.
I don't work with wood so I'm not sure if you need to sand it but it would be the same as a wall. Its just the primer so you can add paint on it without sanding.
Question! Can you use this for watercolor painting on different surfaces, or even on thinner paper (so it can better hold the water)? Or would watercolor ground be better? Could you maybe do a comparison video? Thank you for this video! It was great ♡
yes you can use gesso to cover any surface and use watercolors. for a thinner paper it will protect it from the water however if its too thin then even the gesso will rip it. I have a watercolor comparisson with gesso and without but not on different surfaces. that's an idea for the future
I was wondering if you are using a table or a art mat of some kind. I’m new to all this and I loved this video and one of the things that stood out the most was the surface you were working on because how easy it seems to clean up.
Amber Yes it’s a great mat and comes in two sizes. It’s listed in the description area with links to where you can buy it. It’s the Ken Oliver one. I always list all products and links under my videos. Thanks so much
yes but it should be thick as if its too liquid it will liquify it. best thing is to use mica powders. and remember that if you mix with white gesso it will make it lighter. For example red can become pink. I would use clear gesso instead of white.
Thank you so much for all the information, lots of info that I needed. Been making cards for a year now. I want to start mix media and need to know what to get as I have nothing right niw. I know I would really enjoy it, my sister is going to buy me a journal for starters, I really appreciate you doing this video. Hope you have a blessed day 😊 😄 😉 big hugs from NC, US
hey Betty. most important is some gesso white or black (or both as it depends on the project). also gel medium (soft matte gel, you can watch my gel video) and probably some modelling paste. I have a video on that too. the last thing would be a colouring agent such as sprays or paints. I have a spray video as well. if you have any questions let me know
Thank you so much for this video. I'm going to make the perfect Christmas Goody bag for a friend with this video and tips and information I got from you! I know she's going to love it! This was awesome.
You can gesso over a waxed surface but it might resist the gesso, depending on the wax. candle wax or vaseline will resist it but the finnabair waxes can be covered again
I'm looking for an acrylic gesso for painting over canvases and wood I already painted on. Maybe a liquid gesso like one of these where I don't have to sand it. As long as it covers up the board, I can wait for it to dry and paint over 😄
I would think it would be best to use a thick heavy one like the Finnabair Heavy Gesso. I listed it below. You can buy it in white or black. It will give you a great coverage.
Thank you. The gesso I have used for a long time, I can't get any more. I bought another brand, but it have almost no coverage so I need to find a new brand. For info Liquitex also have a medium gray gesso.
the gesso I get best coverage with is the Prima heavy gesso. its really great. I have it listed above in the description area. I have all the types I showed in the video so you can decide. But I really recommend the Prima Finnabair white heavy gesso
its actually the first one listed in my supply list. here are the links: • Prima - Art Basics - Heavy Gesso - White - 17 Ounces --- ldli.co/e/qyde6r [ ScrapBook.com ] --- ldli.co/e/jq7geo [ Amazon US ]
Would the more liquidy clear Gesso, be better for creating tooth on drawing paper, to use Colored pencils like Polychromos please? or a ;less liquidy one? I need one without much tooth.
I am loving your videos...can I use gesso to transfer a stencil to canvas and then add chipboard image on top...will the chipboard stick to the gesso, do I have to add the gel on top of the chipboard...thanks
the chipboard my stick to the gesso but not very well because the binding agent is weak. Best is to run the gesso through the stencil, let it dry and then stick the chipboard with gel medium. that way the pattern won't get ruined. You can heat set the gesso with a dryer. The chipboard will stick but it might come off it won't be as permanent. Each medium has its own purpose and once you learn the formulas then its great. You can Go to my blog and you can print hard copies of each of the mediums. kerentamir.com
I picked up some by mistake and im painting years but id never heard of it after getting some i returned it but did wonder about wjat it was i assumed ppl only used it for stencil work as in raising areas chalk glue im gonna make my own...
Hi Karen, Love your channel. You are a beautiful soul. Can I ask, can I use White Gesso on driftwood and then paint with Acrylics ? Many Thanks from The South West Coast , UK .🐚🌊☀️ Much Love . 💖🎨💫X
it is water based but it comes like that. its a spray with mica inside. You can actually make your own with mica powder or buy them that way. Color Bloom Sprays, Lindy's Gang are some examples. You can watch my video All About Sprays and All about Micas and it will explain it all
gesso should be smooth not gritty. What I meant is that it has grit in the sense that its porous so it can absorb the paint. However gesso's are smooth.

I always use the plastic wrap/"Press 'n Seal" trick. Not only does it make it easy to open jars, but it keeps art supplies from drying out.
yes that's a great way to keep them fresh

Where do you purchase the Demco gesso? You mentioned Toronto. I'm in Canada and it's so hard to find a variety of product in Canada.
It’s either deserres or curry’s
I just made a sm planter with hm-made clay so the gesso will be good to use for being able to paint it?

Can I ask, can I use White Gesso on driftwood and then paint with Acrylics ?
Many Thanks from The South West Coast , UK .🐚🌊☀️

Yes you can definitely use on wood. It’s a great base for acrylics.
Hello Keren, I like all this information about gesso. Does it last forever! I mean does it spoil?
Thank you for your time.
Dora Nothing lasts forever. It could dry up if not sealed properly. But could be good for a couple of years.
I had a gallon can that wound up smelling very peculiar over time.
What is that water based colored spray you used? Is it watercolor in a spray bottle?
it is water based but it comes like that. its a spray with mica inside. You can actually make your own with mica powder or buy them that way. Color Bloom Sprays, Lindy's Gang are some examples. You can watch my video All About Sprays and All about Micas and it will explain it all

can you use gesso as a way to start over on a canvas? basically can i use it like white out?
Yes you can!
Thanks for letting me know!
Is the Krylon spray gesso any good? What color is it?
it sprays white but I don't use it too often. I do know that it gives an even coat!1
Are all gesso’s gritty? Sometimes I just want a smooth surface and or to smooth out the canvas. What kind of gesso would I use for that?
gesso should be smooth not gritty. What I meant is that it has grit in the sense that its porous so it can absorb the paint. However gesso's are smooth.
