One thing that you don't get when doing the Chilly Hilly route on your own: that feeling when you and a couple hundred other cyclists come off the front of the ferry and onto the island. It's Normandy on D Day. Epic.

Great vid of a classic ride! We in Seattle love the Chilly Hilly route because of the elevation profile, but you're right, there aren't too many views. A granny gear helps a lot, glad to see Shimano got it right with the GRX.
Best way to do it is actually with a small group - one person to fail at navigating ("I think we just added 600 feet of gain to the day"), another person to fail going up Baker ("my chain jumped off! not my fault!"), and another to beg for a shortcut back to the ferry about 80% of the way through.

From the ferry terminal, one boat goes to the peninsula for a short trip. While you may not need your bike, the trip across is worth it because a restaurant called Marination Ma Kai which serves some great eats, (some of which you can pack for later,) and craft beer. At some time of the year blue berries grow close to the water and make the ones in a grocery store look small. Take the ferry back then head out to Bainbridge.

Russ, you got it right the first time, "Painbridge Island". I assume you avoided 10,3% Baker Hill Rd and took the Lynwood Center bypass. I did that hill last year at 70 years old and with a 1:1 gear ratio at 5mph. Of course there are plenty of hills before this one to warm up on too. I see a lot of e-bikes used by the locals on this island.

Aw, I hope the part you lopped off wasn't Baker Hill? It's long but pretty mild compared to some of the one's prior and the descent spitting you out onto Crystal Springs gives you that "this is why I ride" moments. Also, there's two places to stop during the Chilly Hilly route...Rolling Bay Winery on the way north and Pane d'amore Bakery on the south-end.

To add complements on the ferry system in Puget Sound, my wife and did a trip to San Juan Island out of Anacortes. We based out of Guemes island with family then biked to the main ferry terminal and went to San Juan. We found the islands to be VERY pleasant for cycling and using the ferry was so much easier than taking a car. Highly recommended area for biking.

BC Ferries have better bike support, especially on the big gulf-crossing ferries between Vancouver Island and the mainland. Of course, they will yell at you when you ride your bike on and off the ferries, so it isn't all fluffy bunnies and unicorns.
