Using a multi meter to troubleshoot and check the voltages and grounds on a trailer light connector. See part 2, checking lighting system with an ohm meter.
It looks like the ground on your plug is wrong. Top connector on the Truck connector should be the ground. The one that’s different than the others is the ground, No??
Thank you Bill for taking the time to make this video. It helped me to figure out what was wrong with the wiring on my trailer and test/correct everything without having to take it into the shop for repairs. I also learned how to use my multimeter to troubleshoot. Much appreciated
Checking in from Australia, different connector on my vehicle here however the two tips I got from you were the alligator clips and to expect a brief burst on the multimeter for indicators. Super handy vid. Thanks bloke! 😍
Thanks Bill I have a brand new trailer and I thought I was my truck. Looks like I have a problem with the trailer. Continue to help save us 100's of dollars in minor repairs.
I have a 6 pin connector on my RV which connects to a 4 pin connector on my jeep with an adapter. Lights and battery charging aren't working. How do I use a multi meter to isolate where the connection problem is?
Just an FYI, the conversion insert plugs that go from 7-pin to 4-flat OFTEN go bad. Just had that problem and after chasing all the wiring and fuses, etc.,called my mechanic and he told me they are notorious for going bad. Sure enough that was it. Real good video for the other technical possibilities though. Thanks.
Just went through my trailer and replaced all the connectors with soldered connections.. plugged the truck in and all the lights were flashing with the signal. You mentioned the ball being the ground and that was my issue! Thanks!
Thank you for the video, when hooking my meter to the ground on the vehicle plug and touching metal on my vehicle with the other test prong I get 45 ohms is that ground on the plus bad?
+Bill Eaglerunner I ended up re- wiring the whole trailer didn't like the job previous owner still didn't fix it. I even removed ground cleaned up area with a grinder remounted ground still didn't fix it. next I ran alligator clips from ground wire to a new ground point on trailer and it fixed it! bad ground!
that was the dumbest video on trailer lights checking ive seen, there is an adapter just plug into truck and lights up.. heck i was waiting to see you test every wire on trailer not on truck LOL
Sam Elliot fixing trailers
Thanks! Super helpful. The trailer hitch is the ground! Even if that's the only thing you said, it would have been a huge help!
Thx for watching.
Trailer? That's called a truck.
Thanks have watched most of your vids and you have definitely saved me $$ and I'm a subscriber, you do a great job teaching
Straight forward. Thanks!
+nike05 Thx for watching and Good Luck.

I thought this was to check trailer lights. This video checks the truck's connector, not the trailer.
Very helpful. Thanks.
Perfect. To the point. Very helpful.

Maybe one of these videos can help? ruclips.net/p/PLshQLcqixnr3Dk_y3OlkQ0y05Tl49ZFPE. Good luck and thx for watching.
Wonderful Bill. To the point. Unlike so many other RUclips videos you REALLY know what you are talking about. Much appreciated.

45 ohms Normally won't cause a problem. Some times it will? Zero ohms is always best. Thx for watching.
