Merry Christmas! I was trying to gather more technical info when I came across the stained glass artist Julie Feigum a while back. You may already follow her. I had previously watched her tutorials on making the dots with the solder which I found helpful but she just uploaded something new. It was a pendant that was a clear Cabochon picture frame with a vintage photo of someone’s mother from her youth and and attached to back was a mirror to wear as a long pendant necklace. Anyway, she had some interesting techniques to add texture. Since you are always doing new things I thought you may be interested if you haven’t already seen it. I just made four broken China Angel ornaments and yes, you really have to adapt and figure out what may work. I didn’t have anything but pictures so it was perplexing to figure out the fabrication but I got there in the end, lol 😊
Yes I am familiar with Julie’s work! I have made tutorials showing the twisted wire edge, as well as using chain too as decorative edges! It’s fun to experiment, isn’t it? Here’s a link to the twisted wire if you’re interested…

Happy new year to you! 🥂🎆🍾
Despite the struggle I think it came out great! It truly looks like an antique and the final finish matches the color of the stone perfectly.
Thx so much! I’ll continue to experiment with those decorative borders!
I just haven't been online, but I really had to just pop in n wish you Merry Christmas! 🎄 🎁 You're a treasure. Just thinking of you n sending you all the good vibes. I hope you are well, Karen.✨🫂✨🙏💕🪶🪶🪶 Hopefully I can come back and watch some of your videos later. These last couple of videos look beautiful 😍.
Sending all my best wishes your way, sweetie!🥰
Ah thx my friend! You’ve been on my mind a lot too! Hope you had a lovely Christmas! Let’s work towards an amazing 2025! Big Hugs! 🎅🎁🎄 🍾🥂🎆
Thank you ,Happy 2025
Thank You! I appreciate your interest & support! 🙏😊💚
Hey Karen! I'm always in awe of your creativity and process. I would really like to check out the artist you referenced in this video. Could you share a link?
You can always just search her name on RUclips because most times the links are too large to share in the video but here is the link to her channel…youtube.com/@kristinabobin?si=wloZ6cEdS81VNSAc
Very nice tutorial. I had similar challenges with the copper patina on my first piece but I washed my piece off at the end. That's a mistake. And then I read the instructions more closely about drying the piece off. My second piece went very well. I made certain the piece was thoroughly cleaned and dry before I started and only wiped it dry. But I also used Sterling solder on the second piece, not Silvergleem. So it's not apples to apples.
Thx very much! Yes it’s definitely not recommended to wash it off! I haven’t had near the success with any other solder except Silvergleem!
@@karensintuitivejewelry Once my last SoulStar order gets here, I'll test both solders with the copper patina and copy you in.
Excellent! Thanks
Love that stamping!
Looks like after the first successful copper, the q tip had the tarnish from it, and you rubbed it back onto the next area. Try using fresh applicator. Thanks for the tutorials! I work at a Gem Mine in North Carolina, and we find Star garnets and two thousand year old shards of Cherokee Pottery. I need a way to mount stones. I just have to work on my soldering skills!
What you mentioned as tarnish on the Q-tip after the first application is actually the color of the patina when you’re working with it! It’s an acid so it’s not really tarnish so to speak! And as you watch the entire video, you do see that I use several Q-tips And dry the piece off frequently. It’s just a really tricky product and not really great for the lead free solder. I guess it works better with lead solder, but even on forums for stained glass artists this product doesn’t get great reviews. Have you ever tried it? I’d love to see your results if you’d like to share them with me! I appreciate your interest and support! 🙏😊💚
@ I have experienced cleaning manganese and iron oxides from crystals. I use a designated crock pot and acid. If you let the pieces sit on the bottom of the pot, it will remove the stains, and redeposit them along the bottom of the crystals.
@@nancymcshane3501 unfortunately I believe putting actual crystals into the solution with severely damaged them and it’s best to just treat the metal/soft solder material separately when you can. You can use what is called a pickle pot with an acid solution in a crockpot, but that’s mostly used in metalsmithing and again not intended for the actual stones but more for the metal. And this particular stone is actually a composite stone so a little bit more fragile than most. Lucky you to work in a mining situation!
@ yes, I agree the “ emeralds” you used is a composite. I was referring to removing manganese and iron oxide from Quartz crystals. I found the impurities are redeposited on the stone as they sit on the bottom of the crock pot solution of iron out . I chose to set the crystals up on a plastic basket to keep that from happening. Yes, at 73, I have been working at my Dream job for the past two Seasons. We find Star Garnets, Cherokee Pottery shards, and many other treasures, like Rubies and Sapphires in our mine. It has been in operation for 73 years, as old as I am, Lol !
I am looking forward to using this Tiffany method of foiling to allow folks to wear their finds without having to have them set professionally, which takes time, and is way more expensive! Thanks for your tutorials .
Very interesting Karen! Do you think the grey areas are oxidized and that's why rubbing with the brass brush helps before the second application?
No, I do not think that it’s oxidized as you can tell when I initially start the application process I had just cleaned the entire piece. It is quite a mystery to me and I just keep trying to figure it out! 😂🤪🤣
It just seems as if you have to keep drying the piece and doing some burnishing of the solder helps, maybe to expose some fresh surface? I think that the copper patina works better on lead solder that is used with stained glass so I’m sure part of the issue is the lead free component of the solder that we use as jewelry makers. If you have any old solder that contains lead it would be a fun experiment to see if it gives you a better result, but I don’t have any. Wishing you a very happy new year! Thank you so much for your continued support. 🙏😊💖🍾🥂🎆
@karensintuitivejewelry yes I saw your other video where you dried it and reapplied it - that definitely worked very well!
