Upgrading RAM on my Dell G15 Ryzen. 1Rx16 vs 1Rx8 Difference in Games?

  • I bought new HyperX RAM to replace the stock RAM from my Dell G15. See how to change the RAM on this laptop and watch some gaming tests.
    Some notes: The gameplay was recorded using OBS on the same laptop so you might actually get better performance than shown. This was also before the new vbios that Dell recently released that increased the max wattage of the GPU to 130. Nice that they're still doing updates and quickly too.
    Here's the link the RAM I used:

      @@Loaded0 Hey, did you check the timings of your stock ram? TRFC is equivalent to what was considered "good x8 ram" in the legion 5 pro. I have the intel version of your laptop and the stock x16 ram had similar timings to the legion 5 pro "good ram" and my benchmark did not increase in performance after swapping the stock x16 ram modules for x8.

      Mine was for sure the same Samsung x16 ram that was showing the lower performance that everyone else got early on.
      Sounds like some people are getting other brands or newer ram still x16 but better timings and performance. Could also have been recent updates that AMD has been working on due to Windows 11 too.

    • @Loaded0
      @Loaded0  3 года назад +3

      The new bios along with the new vbios made the max wattage for the 3060 up to 130 now. The bios also seemed to fix the default fan curve. It now start up at a lower temperature. Still very quiet though. It fixed the Alienware Command Center so that it doesn’t show 100% fans when it’s not really at 100% (G mode is the real 100%).
      I tested some game performance but it wasn’t really a big difference. The 3060 does seem to go above 115 watts more often now though.

    Hello, sorry once again but I have another question regarding an SSD upgrade. Have you read the documentation for our laptop? It mentions this: "NOTE: If you have ordered only one solid-state drive, it can be upgraded to the solid-state drive of the same form factor but an additional solid-state drive is not supported. If you have ordered two solid-state drives, they can be upgraded to the solid-state drives of the same form factor respectively." - Pretty much fried my head. Does this mean the 2nd SSD I ordered won't work on the 2nd slot? I noticed yours has 2 SSDs installed, did you order "two SSD drives"?

    • @Loaded0
      @Loaded0  2 года назад

      No, my unit only came with one SSD, but there are still two slots. Maybe they’re covering themselves for not including an extra mounting bracket. That whole statement is false too because the laptop can take 2280 and 2230 size m.2 drives.
      When you do install a new ssd in the 2nd slot it might not be formatted and won’t show in Windows so make sure to format it after installing.

    Did you check the timings the Dell was using for the new RAM? It's possible that the laptop did not recognize the RAM's correct timings, and defaulted to a slower set of timings. It probably didn't do this, since your bios was reporting it as '3200MHz'--often RAM will be set to a slower MHz if it is not recognized properly, but I would use a utility program like Zentimings to see what the details of the timings were.

    • @Loaded0
      @Loaded0  2 года назад

      Oh, I didn’t put it in the video but the timings were at CL20. I checked because the Alienware Command Center ram timing display didn’t change after installing the ram. I guess there’s a bug and it always reports the same wrong numbers.

    My laptop came with an existing 8GB RAM 1Rx16. I recently bought an extra 8GB RAM 1Rx8 so I can use the extra memory slot and maximize the capacity. But it seems like these two RAMs are not compatible, my laptop hangs when booting up and shows blue screen errors every time. Could it be because of different memory ranks (x8 and x16)?

    • @Loaded0

      Main complaint against this laptop is that the max is set to 100c on the CPU. Other companies set their max between 90-95. The new bios doesn’t change that, but they fixed the fan curve so it turns on at a lower temperature to keep temps lower for longer.
      Basically it will still hit 100c on the CPU occasionally depending on the game/workload. While the CPU gets hot the chassis actually stays relatively cool. The hot spots are the exhausts in the back and the underside near the middle.

    I really recommend undervolting the GPU with MSI afterburner. It has worked wonders on the laptop for me.
    I'm running mine at 0.931 volts, GPU clock 1972Mhz~1995Mhz.
    Doing so will reduce GPU power consumption by at least 20 W if not more
    when you keep FPS constant, or increase FPS if it was being power limited before.
    I play shadow of the tomb raider at constant FPS (Half the screen Refresh Rate).
    It has reduced Power and temps significantly. GPU stays at mid 60's and CPU mid 80's.
    I use a laptop cooler mind you.
    Honestly, every laptop gamer MUST undervolt their GPU. It's a waste if they don't.
    But especially for this laptop the effects are profound.
    The stock 1.1V is too high and honestly wastes a lot of power.
    Anyway, thanks for making videos on this laptop and keeping updated with the new developments.

  • @monsterrun
    @monsterrun 2 года назад +1

    rule of thumb i learned over the years... it is pointless to upgrade ram unless one of your ram sticks have issues like making read errors constantly.
    cause most of the time ram performance have nothing to do with the Final clock speed... it has to do with Ratio / fsb clock on your processor.
    1 ratio is base of the fsb and clock cycle of your ram
    2nd ratio is the final clock speed and its ram timmings.
    agressive timming might be interesting but will induce more stress on other chips. and if using them for a long period of time this can increase the likelyness of bad memory sync.
    lower timmings are stable, but you can drasticly change performance if not at the right ratio.
    a 2400 mhz ram with perfect ratios can perform better then a 3200 mhz with loose ratio.

    • @Loaded0
      @Loaded0  2 года назад +1

      Haha this kind of went over my head, but I believe you. These Samsung ram have become a bit infamous though because they’re so prevalent lately in laptops. Apparently in this case it’s not really the timings, but a bandwidth issue creating a bit of a bottleneck for CPUs.
