      Those were the days, the dopers and such were all in one area the problem has spread out to neighborhoods. But the stealing and violence is at a level I've never seen in my 52 years of living in SF are city is dying before are eyes. We are to soft on crime most of this problem is immigrants fueling the drug and stolen goods markets bring in the National Guard round them up if they are not bringing anything positive to the table. Just look at civic center , federal building, mission dist All gone to hell and also the tech movement has been sucking the soul out of are city as well. No conventions, no tourist, exodus of retail leaving damn shame Mayor You're making a classy city into a ghetto sitting on your hands and miss managing are budgets and infrastructure. We all do not like piss and needles and half dead people littering are streets think about mayor as you shop at Neman Marcus.

      @@rinwesley3092 what's there to disagree with? What I stated was a fact. You can look it up yourself, most of San Francisco is zoned for single family homes and whenever politicians put up rezoning for a vote the people vote against it. The people of San Francisco literally voted against a housing complex that would have housed elderly people in their units. The people fought tooth and nail against it. The reasoning behind it was multi level units would bring down their property value.

  • @batriley6948
    @batriley6948 2 года назад +713

    Zero sympathy. Every time there is a proposal to open a new homeless shelter, or build affordable housing in SF the locals fight it tooth and nail. They're super in favor of helping the homeless... just not in their neighborhood!

    • @Oumegi
      @Oumegi 2 года назад +33

      Not just that. Doesn't even have to be affordable housing or shelters, just any higher density housing will do. But people in res. zones wanna have their suburban dream. Tbh, I understand them, but the city pop grows and high density must expand, but so can the suburbs - cities are dynamic by nature, but a lot of people expect to have a small town vibe in the suburb forever.

    • @Vivianite02
      @Vivianite02 2 года назад +26

    • @harrymills2770
      @harrymills2770 2 года назад +24

      Street and foot traffic, drug abuse and crime go through the roof when they park low-income housing next door. You bought the place because it was a certain way and then someone comes along and says "It's gonna be different from now on, and screw your property values."
      I don't feel TOO much pity for someone who can afford a million-dollar condo downtown, but most people in the suburbs are not rich. I know I worked my whole life to finally be able to borrow enough money to purchase my first home in my late 40s. If someone came along and devalued my property with the stroke of a pen, I'd be pissed. So would a millionaire. But it would really set ME back, as in years of hard work down the drain and more years of hard work tacked onto to the end of my life when I was really kinda hoping to retire.

    Visited San Francisco and the USA for the first time last week from the UK and stayed on Van Ness. I can safely say I'll NEVER come back to California, and will give the USA a miss for a while.
    I was totally shocked that the USA has streets and areas like this and I definitely felt unsafe. The richer areas of Presidio or Pacific felt ok to be in but other than that SF is terrible.
    I've been to Eastern Europe and Asia and I've never seen the same levels of crime, drug taking or smell of urine and shit on the streets. What went wrong USA? - I thought there was 'an American dream', not sure I see what is so attractive?

    Enforce the laws (like school cities used to), put those suffering from mental illness into facilities to treat them, deal harshly with drug dealers in order to force them to do their work elsewhere...and many of the homeless who are drug-dependent will follow them. Whoever's left who refuse housing assistance (but who aren't causing problems) can stick around as long as they abide by the law and don't harass, threaten, or harm people. Not that simple but you have to start somewhere.

      Speaking of a careless comment, you say "you could explore and find new areas without the threat of 'turning down the wrong street.'" This leads me to believe you actually have no idea what the city was like during this time. If you did, you would know that "turning down the wrong street" in the 80s and 90s in neighborhoods like the Mission, SoMa, or the Western Addition could get you robbed, assaulted, or even killed. Violent crime in San Francisco, much like cities across America, was 2x higher during this time period than it is today (source: Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Uniform Crime Report 1960-2002 and the California Department of Justice’s Criminal Justice Statistics Center, California Crimes and Clearances Files, 2003-2019.)

      Tech didn't create the problem. Cities attract the homeless. To fix the homeless problem cities should provide services in empty rural areas well away from the city or any town. Free transportation, free food, free shelter, free mental health treatment, free drugs, free alcohol, free cigarettes, free television, and an opportunity to work their way out if they want to do so.
      I've worked with the homeless for many decades. I've heard all the excuses. In the end there are a large majority that want free stuff without rules. Give it to them somewhere else.

      You folks don't seem to understand--there's nowhere for the homeless to go to. Not enough affordable housing. It's a very complex problem.
      If you want to help, talk to one of these homeless people and advocate for them. You know, hook them up with someone who can help them straighten their lives out. You can help too! Be moral support, help them find other people who can help change their lives.
      You want to criticize without knowing anything about the problems homeless face. The reason some homeless people don't have jobs is because when one becomes homeless THAT becomes a full-time job!!! Ask me how I know....
      Homeless people like to eat, have to go to the bathroom and like a shower too! The majority have no access to basic necessities....

      What no one talks about: no one is putting a gun to the head of these campers, saying "live in the 1% most expensive urban footprint that exists in the nation." We have the same thing in So-Cal, they flock to the most expensive real estate, even from other states, then claim "but but but Karl Marx says I have a right to live here for free". I was born into real poverty, my family moved ten times by the time I was that many years old. Why? Two reasons: we couldn't afford where we were and had to move, that happened over and over and the second reason being it never occurred to us that we had a right to free housing in expensive areas.
      Gentrification can suck for some, but on the other hand, no one told my dad and mom to basically live the liberal arts degree hippy life that they insisted on living. Society can't support millions of people who refuse to actually produce something that can be exchanged, it has never worked that way, never will. That's why I moved out at 17 and was determined to never, ever, live under the ideology of my parents, and why I alone am the one success story in my otherwise mostly socialist family.
      The day of "luxury space communism" may arrive, in 300 or 400 years, who knows. But it ain't here now, and the problem with half the voters of the USA is they feel to one degree or another, they have a right to it right now.
