I think we're pretty happy to come in at 4th with 18 gold behind Japan's 20 gold, or 5th on the overall medal tally. For a population of 26 million, I don't mind if we come behind countries with a population of 333 million, 1.4 billion, and 125 million. And New Zealand with only a population of 5 million came in 11th place with 10 gold. Proportionately impressive.

    Alex, I'm an Aussie, and I was well aware of the "Emu War" and what it entailed! I'm also a West Aussie so I'm familiar with the history! 😁
    The ex-diggers were very capable of handling the situation, but like you elucidated, they didn't have sufficient ammunition.
    The trouble the "Army" had with the Lewis Guns was the fact that a large proportion of the Emus body is feathers, so you aim for the largest part, the body, and bullets pass through without hitting any of the vitals!
    The diggers, when they had sufficient ammunition, were able to put their training, and experience, into action and drop an impressive number of birds!
    On a personal note, I'm happy you pronounced Emu correctly. It saves me the effort of denigrating the American propensity to mangle Australian words! 😁😁
    As a side note, the Australian Light Horse regiments wear an Emu feather in their slouch hats, and berets. This goes back to before the Boer War when Queensland mounted infantry had to show their horsemanship by ridding up alongside an Emu and plucking a wing feather!
    During the Great War in the Middle East, all the Light Horse regiments adopted the Emu feather as a sign of who they were, and it's followed on to today. If you see an Aussie serviceman with an Emu feather in his hat, or his beret, he's a Light Horseman! 😄😄
    To the PC crowd, don't jump in and denigrate me for using male pronouns, it's a lot easier using the words I did and not some neutral pronouns! Besides it reads better the way it's written and not the way you'd like it to be written! 😝

      We are not sure what happened, but suspect that inbreeding occurred due to the low numbers that washed over causing a mutation that disabled their ability to climb. I also appreciate the dispelling of myths people love taking about Australia and dangerous animals but the animal that kills the most people in Australia is horses, spiders and snakes basically never kill people, we have no wolves, lions, tigers, bears, jaguars, cheetahs or whatever else. Another one is that Australia is just a desert or is like Florida, there is a small sliver that is like Florida but Australia is about the same size as the contiguous United states and as such is just as diverse in biomes it has every thing from temperate and tropical rainforests to snowy mountain, go look up some videos of kangaroos hopping in the snow.

    Hi, Australian here. while I appreciate the overall message regarding digital media, few point's I'd like to add
    1.Yes the employment of machine gunners to deal with the emus very much was a propaganda tool, but one that was somewhat supported by public sentiment and farmers who had been asking for government intervention, and specifically millitary intervention. I actually have documents from the Australian archives circa 1933-34 from Western Australian politicians claiming that their local constituents wanted the Army to try again at dealing with the problem, and the subsequent internal discussions of the WA Government about why they didn't think it was a viable choice.
    2.Regarding why the use of the Army was considered to be a failure, and why it wasn't tried again. It basically comes down to the excessive expenditure of ammunition, or rather the excessive cost related to that usage of ammunition. Again the archival documents make it very clear that while the media ridicule was considered politically inconvenient, the real crux of the issue was that they were just using too many bullets per emu. While as you said it doesn't seem like a lot of ammunition considering the usual expenditure of automatic weapons, Its important to remember that Australia at the time did not have a standing Army per sey (the modern Aus army would not exist until 1947, prior to that was a militia system) and the already small defence budget was being stretched even thinner due to the great depression.
    3.Arguably the 'Emu war' only refers specifically to the involvement of the millitary in the issue, and having failed their objectives of sufficiently culling the emu population it can be said that they did indeed lose that war, even if the media hyperbole and online discourse obscures the truth of the matter. Also its worth noting that Australian sense of humour is very big on self deprecation, we're probably some of the biggest propagators of Emu war memes because its not something that embarrasses us or damages the national pride, we think its funny. So again, while I agree with the overall message of the video, please continue with the Emu war memes because we love a good laugh.
    overall a good video and a well presented take on the topic

    The reason that most Aussies agree we lost this "WAR" is that the government did so little to help didnt listen to the people on the ground and then called it off when it got embarrassing and left it up to the farmers in the end to sort it out and the farmers would have wiped out the entire Emu and in other places Roo populations for the same reasons that they damage crops and such but these are nothing to a good old Locust plauge that will wipe out hundreds of square miles of crops in a week and go on for months.

    I'm an Aussie veteran that did two tours of Afghanistan.. You uploaded this video for a great start to my day.
    I've heard this story pop up from time to time, and it has to be told with a straight face, like the story of the Australian drop bear "A mythical vampire Koala"
    It's all a case of the way Australian's "spinning a yarn" for humour.. none of the stories written back in the 30's or the 40's would have been taken seriously except the exception of how we view our marksmanship..
    Which is what the story is really poking fun at.. As, It would've been expected that every emu should've only taken one bullet to kill by an Australian digger as we do pride ourselves on our shooting abilities. So for such a failed PR exercise. It was funny to say the emu's were 6 foot tall and bullet proof 🤣
    Ps sorry about the few who run there mouths on the internet. But as for comparing our medal tallies just devide each by the countries populations and see who come out on top 😅

    Wasn't the Olympic beef more the rest of the world against America. Because America shows total medal tally's whereas everyone else does gold medal tallies for nation rankings. So Australia started doing gold medals per capita, which put Australia miles in front.

    • @HoneyLaw1
      @HoneyLaw1 Месяц назад

      Isn't there only so many Gold medals you can win and a limited amount of athletes you can have competing? So wouldn't that make per capita a dumb way to measure it since each country can only win x amount of medals in x amount of events with x amount of atheletes? Or am I just failing at math? Idk per capita seems like dumb cope given that Australia sent quite a lot of athletes to the Olympics as well, the third highest number of athletes behind the U.S and France.

    • @DTex.45ACP
      @DTex.45ACP Месяц назад +1

      @@HoneyLaw1 Nah, per capita is very valid because a vastly wider pool to draw on for athletic talent means the individual athletes should have a higher potential than a smaller pool.
      If you can have 5 athletes but are drawing from a pool of 1,000,000 you will absolutely have better options than a country that has 5 athletes drawn from a pool of 10 potential candidates.
      AUS kicks ass here, and per capita medals should be the metric the world judges success from. The main problem is this would rightfully embarrass Da Gweat Chynah! I'm not seeing any downside.

    • @HoneyLaw1
      @HoneyLaw1 Месяц назад

      @DTex.45ACP I think per capita neglects factors that have a much larger impact on a countries olympic performance such as the culture surrounding sports, and how highly regarded athletics are in any given society, also how much money a country invest into its Olympic athletes. If your country doesn't place an emphasis on athletics then it's performance isn't going to be good regardless of how large the talent pool is. Example: India
      I think per capita neglects more important factors such as the domestic sports culture of each country. For example basketball is huge in the U.S so of course lots of our 300 million people play the sport thus giving us more talent to pull from and allowing us to do good. Meanwhile mens soccer isn't really that popular in the U.S so less of our 300 million people are interested in playing it at a high level and thus our men's soccer has a much smaller talent pool for soccer players than countries that have a huge soccer culture.
      Not to diminish Australia at all because it its clear from its Olympic performance that it is a powerhouse of athletic talent and deserves respect/ recognition.

      Total Med: 20

      ~~~
      **Australia**
      Gold Med: 18
      Gold M/C: 1,520,256
      Total Med: 53
    • @Christoph1888
      @Christoph1888 Месяц назад +2
      @@HoneyLaw1 the implication is the larger the population the larger your Talent pool. If exceptional is let's say 0.01% of the population. Then that pool will be a lot bigger in a country with a large population. But obviously that's over simplifying it as poor countries can't invest in sports like wealthy countries do, nutrition education play a part, ect
    We’ve been talking up the dangers of our wildlife to immigrants and foreigners for 200 years now, while either disregarding or dealing with them at home. It’s good for a chuckle at times, and it’s long been said amongst ourselves that Australia is the only country in the world to put its two biggest pests on their Coat of Arms.
    The triumph of image over substance yet again.
    More examples? Yeah, the world second “most venomous “ snake is the common local species . I’ve never been bitten. Never had a close call…. and the number of people who die after being given proper treatment is close to zero. In my experience, they are pretty non-aggressive.
    I’ve given up on the Olympics as being over-hyped and over-commercialised, so I wasn’t even aware that there was any tension over the issues. I suspect that we have our share of leftie-loonies, just as you do, and hatred of America is as much a religious dogma for them here as it is for leftie-loons amongst your own countrymen.
    The rest of us sometimes roll our eyes at American politics, but America is still a good ally, many Americans are still decent people….. and our own politics isn’t anything to crow about.
    Thanks again….. Peter.
      I feel for your great grandfather. I have experienced the atrocities of the Emu first hand. I still wake up with sweets in the middle of the night :(
      Bless his soul and may he rest in peace now.
    Thank you. You got a chance to vent, set the story straight, make an important point, AND entertain... Plus, you added a relevant Star Trek reference!!❤
