Thank you for doing a detailed video on this! I did the same thing to my 5.3 two years ago. I pulled the heads and discovered all 8 AFM lifters collapsed and 3 dropped intake valves. I was cursing GM the entire time it took me to replace the pistons cam lifters and valves. Love this project and the cause! Many tanks for doing what you do.
Great Video man. I had an engine fire in my 1997 Comp T/A Yesterday. It has been my dream car since I was in high school back in 97 and I've owned this car since 07. I had pulled it out of my garage and fired her up to log some IAC Counts. As they were a bit high at idle last time I logged the car. And the day before I modified the IAC Passages on my BBK 58mm TB to bring the IACs down. I stepped into the garage to put some stuff away. She must have sprung a fuel leak early on after I found a 1in split on the return line under the loom that looked like it had gotten dry and rotted. And it must have been leaking for a few min. About the time it started idling kind of rough I looked up and thats when it ignited. There was a giant fireball I ran to the car and turned it off, ran to my garage to get my fire extinguisher and remembered that it was still at the back of the house as I had it near by for my 4th of July BBQ. I know its a big no no for a fuel fire, but my outside faucet and garden hose was closer...cranked it on and got the fire out. All the wiring is toast, some melted plastics and the engine bay looks like a burnt roast. I'm not worried about the mechanical and I can repair the engine harness myself. But some of these plastics are getting harder to find.....been a bad year for me man. Like I said, great content and it actually put me in a good mood.

FWIW - Those Roloc Bristle Discs have ceramic grit and are actually quite abrasive. They really shouldn't be used on sealing flanges or on engines, especially soft aluminum. You can take a few thousandths off without even thinking about it. GM even put out a TSB (00-06-01-012D) against using them.
@@TONYSTARK-jh2wu Yeah but you probably have years of experience and very carefully barely get the crud/old gasket material off. Least that's how I do it. I also prefer scraping all the high spots off first and use the roloc very gingerly.
I dont care how long you have been working on cars or how carefully you are you will destroy a good engine in no time green is cast iron and white is what your looking for on aluminum The surfaces will be ruined but worst of all you get all that grit in the oil system and say by by bearings good luck washing that grit off
personally I avoid any power tools on aluminum, I have a set of what used to be wood planer blades that have been ground on a surface grinder. I just gently shave off the old and avoid making divots that way.
I bought a new 1999 silverado 2500 4x4 with the LQ4 engine. last nov a kid running a redlight totaled it and now I have a 2014 camry le. loved my LQ4 only problem I had was the pressure regulator leaking fuel into the intake. no one helped on the internet with that. I had to figure it out myself. clue when engine warmed up shut it off and pull the vacuum hose off the regulator. if fuel comes out the regulator is bad. Delphi makes a good replacement. I replaced my spark wires with MSD and that it for 20 years. I always used mobil 1 changing oil/filter every year. the engine had a noisy(clicking) lifter on start up but that went away with mobil 1. great truck. but I can not control bad drivers. Im 75 and not in to project vehicles. been there done that. Liked your video and its good to get the young guy into the project. best wishes on this build
I couldn't wait to the end of the video to hit like, when I saw your kid helping out my kid memories with my dad hit hard and melted my heart. Keep the awesomeness coming and thanks for sharing.
Love that Jr. got some wrench time on the project. I have pictures helping my father with repairs when I was around his age and that was the beginning of a life-long passion.
I wish I had the confidence and knowledge to work on motors like this. I’m a diy mechanic and tackle medium jobs and really enjoy it but I know my limits. Your calm confidence in these videos makes this stuff look so so much easier than it is though I think. Could get someone like me into trouble real quick I think. Haha. Can’t wait to see this motor installed and running. Keep up the great work mate. 👍
1royalwolf, having job specific tools is key. Knowing how the tool applies to the part you're working on and a firm grasp of applied sciences will complete your training young Padowan. 🙏 That and a boatload of common sense.
I can attest to using plastic grinding disc to clean the head surfaces. I used that method when I reused a cylinder head on a Hyundai Tucson 2.0 engine. Worked well and engine ran perfectly. No issues. Good tips.
It's amazing when you can reuse/rebuild an original component on the engine, such as the rocker arms in the video. But it's even more astonishing when you can take that same component and modify it to make it better. Love videos like this; great work Alex. Love that you include your son during the build-what a great dad. I have a video on youtube of my 2 sons and daughter helping to remove the tire/wheels and change struts on an old civic I had.
I'm lovin' how detailed you get yet not blowing my mind with technicalitites (say engine shop 101). Really enjoy all of your videos...keep pumpin' them out. P.S. great time to get your son involved...he's going to learn so much and it'll set him up for a great career or give him skills (engineering, etc.) he'll carry for the rest of his life!!
Alex I watched the BMW fuel injector install you did and it was not a wasted move - you looked like a artist painting away putting together your vision. Clearly your brain was made for this because you look like each movement is pretty much perfectly timed and executed. Nicely done. I have watched my mechanic work and it is nothing like you.
The Chevrolet Caprice PPV is built by Holden, of course we make it difficult 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Welcome to Australiana It's just weird seeing it in PPV guise considering the Holden Caprice (technically) Is the flagship luxury car with all the bells & whistles including the later ones being fitted with the LS3
Loved to see your son join you in wrenching. Got a son myself 6 weeks ago and already cant wait to teach him how to work on cars and bikes, just like my dad taught me
Thank you for being honest on the many problems we regularly see at a machine shop i work at. Also see many camshaft problems and lots of rod bearings burning up.
a more proper repair would have been to pull the individual wires one at a time out of the weatherpak and shrink wrapped them one at a time, its too easy not to do that, then shrink wrapped the entire pig tail, then put the loom on, then heat tape on. love your videos
Second this comment. If you've ever taken apart electrical tape after it's been in an engine compartment for a year or more, you'll never use it again. Temporary repairs ONLY.
@@allanb3222 i forgot about that...i guess you could remove the pins, install the shrink, push the wires thru and then reinstall the pin and pull seat. I work on alot of Toyotas and i have to remove burnt/corroded wires alot of times, so i pull off the crimps, cut the old dirty wire out and then solder the new wire to the central portion of the old pin and then recrimp the insulation seal back on the larger crimp and reseat. toyota has a few connector that are pull to seat but most are remove lock, insert removal tool, pull out the rear.
I grew up helping my dad do minor car repairs, and I loved taking other stuff apart too! One thing he taught me is to always pull on a ratchet/wrench if possible. He was a Chief Engineer on ships when he was younger. Our bodies are much better designed to pull than to push. I saw him and his son pushing the torque wrench, its ok but pulling is easier.
I love the fact I saw your son learning from you. If he seriously likes mechanical things it would be nice to see him learning more often. Your a great dad.
as a warranty heavy line tech for GM... that cleaning job you did is terrifying... cleaning past gasket staining or other "discoloration" is typically a big bad no no.... yea you can get away with it buy many do not... results in blocks needed decked etc due to head gasket leaks... is a style of cleaning left to the pro's.. not the average home DIY guy...
My parents had a 2009 Yukon XL with the flex fuel 5.3L V8 (L99, I think it was), until November 2017. I visited them for Thanksgiving, and the first thing I heard when they picked me up at the airport was that lifter tap that you demoed at the beginning of the video. Literally that exact sound is pretty much seared into my memory. Now I know why the lifter tap issue reared its head (not specifically, since there are a few different reasons why, but I have some clues now), and why they decided to trade it in a few days after my visit ended. Great information here, thanks!
I think you're supposed to put 3 shims around the crank shaft when you bolt on the oil pump. I watched melling's video on installing an LS oil pump, and I'm pretty sure that's what they did. I don't know if it's required though.
Good to see you showing torquing to angle. So many don't and tons of people don't understand that you can kill your engine or totally lose control of your car if you don't.
@@devokdr No, No, No! Do not believe the Melling video, they are in the business of designed obsolescence and selling more pumps. Neither the OEM nor Melling pumps are self aligning, rotating the crank does nothing for alignment of the outer rotor in the housing, it floats and the absence of locating dowels in the housing along with oversized bolt holes almost guarantees early pump failure if the alignment shimming is not carried out correctly. Ask any mechanical engineer and they'll explain why: ruclips.net/video/CWCIdhG04LY/видео.html
Awesome video. Very detailed...thank you for supporting First Responders and their families. Love your channel and your projects. You have a fantastic presentation style.
I have a 2009 Pontiac G8 GT which is the earlier version of the Caprice PPV. I've got almost 200k miles on it and I did have a lifter fail on the engine at about 167k but it wasn't due to a failed lifter. The lifter holders, which are plastic, allowed the lifter to rotate and it destroyed the lifter and cam. I can attest that the AFM, in my case, is about a 5 MPG improvement on my car. It goes from 19 MPG to almost 26 MPG on the highway. The trucks don't see the same improvement I guess. The car does have a VCM intake, Solo catback exhaust and Superchips tune on it as well. Loving the content on this build too!
I really enjoy these types of videos but as I'm a uk subscriber, we don't really have many dealings with the LS engine, most tend to be 4 cylinder engines here. It was really good to see your son lending a hand and feel, if they show an interest even at such a young age, it's good to let them help as they learn better when younger, I used to let my daughter help a little when I tinkering if she wanted to help. I feel it can help with bonding and can teach them to have a little more respect the cars and people who do it for a living.
Love this build Alex! Been wanting to do literally the same thing since a few "cheap"ish #PPV started coming around. So how soon till the wife's AFM is deleted on the Escalade? Lol Can do mine first for practice?
Thank you so much for your support. During these hard times it’s difficult to see anyone especially a RUclipsr supporting the blue. Btw your channel helps me and other gear head cops get thru tough days.
Thanks for going through the LS Rebuild. Although I’m not building a N/A LS, but a Compound Quad Turbocharged. Watching you build & explain things on here is VERY HELPFUL. So thanks 🙏
Good choice on going amsoil. I service fleets of ford and Chrysler's. Using Amsoil from day 1 and they have 350-800,000 miles original engines ranging from 4 clys to 8 clys. Best oil on the market. I do 10,0000 mile intervals to 300,0000 miles then I go to 8,000 after
When you do the AFM delete its recommended to plug the oil pan pressure relief valve. Not saying Alex didn't do this, but I didn't see it in the video. Here's what that part looks like: www.improvedracing.com/oil-pans/ls-oil-pan-pressure-relief-valve-plug-kit-p-902.html
I think it’s awesome that you support first responders. I retired from the St. Louis Metro PD after 25 years and I can tell you it is much appreciated!
I use these 3M Bristle disc to clean hubs when changing disc and gasket removal, great tool and they come in different grades too, and along with a Lazer 7839 disc lip removal tool.
Hi Alex, I've got a WM Holden Caprice in the caprices home land , Oz ,love the videos, strangely I thought I was already subscribed ,but I am subbed again 👍 totally stock ATM Btw
I bought a 2011 caddilac with DOD and paid $2500 to get rid of DOD completely. I also had a dropped seat so that started it all. Right now its working just great. well worth the change.
This is all wrong! Using torque wrenches on head bolts instead of just holding the trigger on the impact for the old head bolts, assembly lube instead of WD40, new parts instead of used 250k mile parts.... @sloppymechanics would be disappointed. 🤣
Don't forget the correct way to torque up bolts: keep pulling on the torque wrench then say to yourself "click" .. that's done then move on to next job......😬😆
He has a really good voice and a very well expressed vocabulary , he's really easy to listen to getting right to the point with very useful information, keep up the good work and will definitely uses Amazon links, Buena suerte, I drive in 05 Corvette with an LS2 engine
I have a 2018 GMC Sierra Denali with the L86 engine. The AFM would not disengage properly in some instances going from 4 to 8 cylinder mode and made the truck drive like you were going across a field sideways. Threw in a Range afm disabler and it's been smooth sailing since.
Electrical tape in hot areas = bad.. the heat will soften the tape and unwrap . you should use shrink tubing do one at a time so you don't mix the order .. .. Great Video .. brings back memories ..
Hey Alex I usually love your videos and I see it’s a great build but there is one thing here ... please stop using the rotary grinder with the scotch brite pad or Bristle Disc ,it’s just as bad especially on aluminum! This tool destroys the matching surfaces and you just made nice waves all over the head gasket surface!yes it takes longer to clean by hand... use plastic scraper , red or gray scotch brite soaked in brake cleaner works well!
typ901 that one is no different! You have to clean by hand period! That tool Digs in the material! And removes material! You can clearly see the surface finish damage on the video!
Gm actually came out with a bulletin stating that yawing those green, yellow or scotch bright pads will cause premature engine failure due to the aluminum particles now all up inside the engine and eventually when you start it in the bearings see this often at the Chevy dealership I work at
I was totally surprised when i torn down my 300,000 mile 2004 6.0 rod and main bearings look almost new. All but front cam bearing as well. Considering the trash /build up inside the block. It was darn right amazing.
Good video, nice work. I've put together over a half dozen LS's and always used new oil pumps and the LS2 improved timing chain but I always check the pushrod seats in the rockers. I've never torn down a LS that didn't have at least 4 or 5 bad rockers and pushrods where the wear pattern is all screwed up. Replacement bodies and a set of one piece pushrods are mandatory. The kits with the full caged needle bearings for the rockers are good but I prefer the Staube kits with the oilite bronze bushings, mandatory also along with a new cam and Blue LS2 springs from GM performance , Texas Speed or BTR. My last build I bored and swapped in a set of flat top 5.7 pistons into another 5.3., stuffed it into a '68 C10 with a 700r4. Right now I got a 4.8 for free, going through it and adding a Texas Speed low lift (.550") cam and a set of blue springs. Headed for a T5 and going in a '88 S10 for a daily driver, tons o' fun.
Even the low mileage engines, less than 50k miles? What causes the spark plugs to have oil on them when I take them out. It's not my valve covers. It's only on the DOD cylinders.
@@TooFly357 I would hazard a guess that its just because when the DOD is active there is no fuel or fire in those cylinders to burn it off. Probably have the same amount of oil in all of the cylinders, but the others dilute it with fuel and burn it.
I can't find bolts or nuts on my little repairs. (Just changing a starter). I can't imagine a job this big. I'm not that good of a mechanic. Awesome watching him.
Ronald Reed you know what’s even funnier, in Australia we use imperial for weed. Ounces, a quarter etc but when it comes to smaller amounts we use grams. A bit of a weird mish mash

Loved to see your son join you in wrenching. Got a son myself 6 weeks ago and already cant wait to teach him how to work on cars and bikes, just like my dad taught me
Who knew that GM collabed with VLONE before any of these other designers? Great info Alex.
Hi Sam
Vlone runtz
VLOM...but yes they did
Ahhhh...ford FE design is where gm took most ques from....deep skirt block, tall port heads...
Thank you for the donations. I’m prior military and fire and it means a lot. Our police need all the help they can get right now.
I have captions on and when it shifts to the ‘vette exhaust, it indicates “music” . I couldn’t agree more.
Thank you for being honest on the many problems we regularly see at a machine shop i work at. Also see many camshaft problems and lots of rod bearings burning up.
Can you do a diesel rebuild? Oh and by the way I learned something in this video, I’m a mechanic
Did my heart a world of good when the young lad started helping with the build. Well done teaching the young lad.
a more proper repair would have been to pull the individual wires one at a time out of the weatherpak and shrink wrapped them one at a time, its too easy not to do that, then shrink wrapped the entire pig tail, then put the loom on, then heat tape on.
love your videos
Second this comment. If you've ever taken apart electrical tape after it's been in an engine compartment for a year or more, you'll never use it again. Temporary repairs ONLY.
The only issue with that, is that metripack connector is pull to seat. The heat shrink wouldn't pass thru the conector body.
I was about to go get lunch when I started watching this video. I am now 25 min. behind on eating lunch! KILLER video! loved it.
It is great to see your boy is taking an interest in your engine building :)
Respect for donating to GS foundation. GS is a legit good dude.
Love the fact your son is helping you with it! I hope my daughter will be the same as she gets a bit older 😂
2018 Camaro ZL1 with 7200 miles and had oil pump failure already. Hopefully it’s not a widespread issue. Great video and what a dream garage.
Thanks again for your support of law enforcement.
This car is going to be one hell of sleeper.... Awesome Video Alex
150% recommend the trunnion upgrade, Had a stock rocker give out and fishing those needle bearings out was a pain.
I think you're supposed to put 3 shims around the crank shaft when you bolt on the oil pump. I watched melling's video on installing an LS oil pump, and I'm pretty sure that's what they did. I don't know if it's required though.
It is. That centers the rotor.
Thank you for your support to vets and first reponders!
That was the perfect moment to install Poly Motor Mounts for extra spice on the driveability :(
Good to see you showing torquing to angle. So many don't and tons of people don't understand that you can kill your engine or totally lose control of your car if you don't.
Nobody makes a V8 sound so good that the USA. One day...one day I will have one!
Love, UK
Say no to china motors.
Thanks for your donation, Gary does amazing work.. he donated a track chair to a quadruple amputee vet I did work for
10:56 Aligning the oil pump with the crank would also be a good idea at this point. Only takes some feeler gauges and a few minutes.
I thought the same thing. Melling oil pump only requires a 360 deg rotation of the crank for alignment.
Ask any mechanical engineer and they'll explain why:

I was a Chevy tech when I built my ls I had the ls tool kit to line up front and rear cover and oil pan and to remove and install balancer
I feel like you and Jared are the only you tubers that actually know what they are talking about and doing when it comes to cars. Awesome video man.
Chrisfix entered the chat.
Fakhara Restaurant he has Oscar doing all the work lol
Awesome video. Very detailed...thank you for supporting First Responders and their families. Love your channel and your projects. You have a fantastic presentation style.
How do you always sounds so excited, motivated and energized? I love your vids!
He has a fetish for GM cars
Compare that timing chain installation to one on a twin can engine,Fordtechmakuloco installing one on a Ford V6 for instance. Easy peasy!
Love these vids., the LS V8 and it's simplicity. Great job in rebuilding the heart of the Sleeper Beast Caprice Alex AKA "LS open heart surgeon" B-))
Great to see your little man involved. Building memories and a build partner.
Cool. 1st responders deserve better treatment. 🤘💯
So do citizens, they deserve a police force that actually understands and respects our constitution.
Alex I could see you do RUclips full time. With your mechanic skills ,personality , presence in front of the camera ,etc ,etc!
Grate job Alex, as always. I cant wait to hear this beast roaring!!
Thanks for going through the LS Rebuild. Although I’m not building a N/A LS, but a Compound Quad Turbocharged. Watching you build & explain things on here is VERY HELPFUL. So thanks 🙏
that sounds like alot of fun
Lt Dan got me a new suit one time! Great org!
Good choice on going amsoil. I service fleets of ford and Chrysler's. Using Amsoil from day 1 and they have 350-800,000 miles original engines ranging from 4 clys to 8 clys. Best oil on the market. I do 10,0000 mile intervals to 300,0000 miles then I go to 8,000 after
I disable AFM @ 10,000 miles on my 2019 Silverado LD
How did you do that?
I love how simple the timing chain system is.
The timing chain system is nice and simple on GM, but cannot say the same for imports.
Simplicity of GM.
When you do the AFM delete its recommended to plug the oil pan pressure relief valve. Not saying Alex didn't do this, but I didn't see it in the video. Here's what that part looks like: www.improvedracing.com/oil-pans/ls-oil-pan-pressure-relief-valve-plug-kit-p-902.html
Good to see the young fella actually gettin his hands in there,he will be a great engine builder, love it!
6:40: "There's practically no wear on the old engine"
The old oil pump sprocket, missing it's teeth, staring him in the face: Am I a joke to you?
I think it’s awesome that you support first responders. I retired from the St. Louis Metro PD after 25 years and I can tell you it is much appreciated!
Gary Sinese is a top bloke
lol, I think it’s a what ever🤣
Don't forget the correct way to torque up bolts:
keep pulling on the torque wrench then say to yourself "click"
.. that's done then move on to next job......😬😆
LOL, a sloppy build it aint!
Don't you know an experienced mechanic can measure torque by feel better than any torque wrench ever made?
@Corona Virus I would have thought you would recognize a joke when you hear one.
He has a really good voice and a very well expressed vocabulary , he's really easy to listen to getting right to the point with very useful information, keep up the good work and will definitely uses Amazon links, Buena suerte, I drive in 05 Corvette with an LS2 engine
Ask the ACCC about the, 'so called' piston slap issues we had on our Holden V8's. Out of round cylinder casting.
But final cylinder bore is machined, not "as cast". 🤔
I have a 2018 GMC Sierra Denali with the L86 engine. The AFM would not disengage properly in some instances going from 4 to 8 cylinder mode and made the truck drive like you were going across a field sideways. Threw in a Range afm disabler and it's been smooth sailing since.
Love the Caprice!!
Yep
He Used the rubber one. Then stated to not use the scotch brite pads.
typ901 that one is no different!
Can we take the Caprice to the track🔥
Yes
Thank you for supporting the police publicly, lots of honorable men and woman out there that deserve support and appreciation.
Hey Alex, another great video mate.. where can I send you some Holden Statesman badges from Australia 🇦🇺 for the caprice 👍🏼
Holden doesn’t exist anymore mate😂😂. Good we don’t have to waste American engines on those vehicles 😎
Seems to me like literally all of AFM's issues can be attributed to poor maintenance. Clogged oil screen, oil sludge, low oil. Poor maintenance.
@@speedbuggy16v sounds logical to me.
Thank you for supporting LEOs and their families.
Hi. I really mis diesel engine content. Are you doing any soon?
I can't find bolts or nuts on my little repairs. (Just changing a starter). I can't imagine a job this big. I'm not that good of a mechanic. Awesome watching him.
I love that even though you’re US based you’ve used grams for the weight. Thank you and sorry to the Americans who had to do the conversion 😂
Does anyone know if he’s Romanian?
Get those commie units outta here. If you don't like imperial standard, then you can just geet ouuut.
thanks to the drug trade many Americans are well versed in grams, not saying the guy in the video is......... but just saying......
@@speedbuggy16v
Lol
Ronald Reed you know what’s even funnier, in Australia we use imperial for weed. Ounces, a quarter etc but when it comes to smaller amounts we use grams. A bit of a weird mish mash
