We'll have to wait until the younger generations finish taking over our government, first. Though, it would be funny to hear the older politicians say that.🤣
From a psychological perspective, the political discourse of woke vs anti-woke has transformed into a mirroring conflict of revengeful narcissism vs grandiose narcissism. I would argue this is the main reason why the current situation seems so pathological, convoluted and apparently irrencocilable. Essential empathy and understanding being replaced by ideological dogmatism and self-righteous virtue-signaling by proponents on both sides of the spectrum.
I think the problem with wokeness is that it robs us of individuality. I don't want to hear from a black millionaire that a white low income worker is more privileged than him, because the black millionaire's father was discriminated against, while the white low income worker's ancestors had power. This sort of thinking creates tribalism, and tribalism always creates more tribalism. We are so far into this nonsense, that here in Germany Syrians and Turks play this game as well. A well integrated Turk is an "uncle Tom" for other Turks. This absolute nonsense. Germans and Turks were allied in ww1, we never had any colonization/slavery history with them, and yet: They're playing the same cards as Afro-Americans. You can't make this up. This is peak wokeness for me.
Psychology cannot solve socio-economic problems. Of course it can explain authoritarianism, how we become authoritarian. But psychology is incapable of understanding social movements and, above all, changing the balance of power. I bet many CEOs give money to Greenpeace while discussing how to increase productivity without paying workers more... Some even may work in fossil fuels. They are loving, open-minded, fairly balanced, in short, far from being sociopaths or narcissists.
In many ways though it has also broken up the social conservative base that capitalism has relied on for a long time. The once unified "right" is very visibly splitting apart between fascists and corporatists.
This hits the nail on the head. People feel satiated by the socially progressive “activism” of these corporations but then are happy to turn a blind eye to any attempt for organized labor, which by the way would help marginalized groups way more than any socially progressive branding or publicity.
I disagree. Alot of the same people who like corporate activism also agree that most workers should organize and wholy support unions. I mean democrats and leftist as a whole push more legislation supporting unions and worker organizing.
@@RedFezLad I'll grant you that they agree with it. But the performative gestures don't really equate to tangible support beyond, maybe, how they were already going to vote and donate during election seasons.
It is more complicated. Because the only one that has real impacts in standing up to governments trying to claw back social policies like abortion and LGBTQ rights are the corporations. There have been multiple businesses pushing back against these draconian laws Republicans are pushing forward, even some corporations putting money in to shelter people who need abortions. Of course this isn't always the case and what the video says has merit, but with the current political situation, you have to take the lesser of two evils sometimes. Do you want human rights?

The people behind them can do those things, though being a client of those companies can indirectly move money and influence to efforts that you may or may not want it to go.
My thing is how the system keeps you in a spiral of overwhelming anxiety and burnout to keep people from being woke in the traditional sense (Edit) damn I wasn't expecting all these likes seesh thanks yall
and what wokeness has become keeps people too distracted and divided to come together to do anything significant about the fucked up spiral. People just want to act like pissing each other off and getting offended, or walking around with their fist in the air, waving a flag is accomplishing something.
@Dusty Hurd I mean, a bunch of people organizing in public to demonstrate their opinions is the foundation of public grievance, it does accomplish something. I feel like you’re mistaking authentic political trends and organization for Corporation’s attempts at co-opting of ‘wokeness’. Authentic wokeness never went away, it just exists alongside a sterile “pop culture” version.
As a black man I knew the word "woke" my whole life and never found a time to use it. Things like "eyes open" or other simple terms would be used. The first person who said it out loud to me with its new meaning wasn't black. Now I don't think I know any of my friends who use it.
Same, knew all my life what it meant to be "Woke" to us black folks but never ever used it in a sentence. Then all of a sudden it just took over discussion and got twisted into something else by those outside of our collective.
the woke issue is used to keep people thinking about issues that have no effect on them, instead of worrying about the economic issues or democratic issues that matter. it keeps the working people fighting amongst eachother instead of fighting the super wealthy individuals creating this mess.
@@XioriannaEBDjinn im not saying they are seperate but when people start feeling left behind by their government and the economy is when people start becoming susceptible to the demagoguery that leads to the social issues
And it’s on purpose. Because seriously, only people who have very bad intentions would want to turn the term « social justice » into a negative expression. The exact same thing happened with « woke »
The reason Republicans replaced social justice with woke but mainstream society never stopped using social justice positively is the same reason most Americans think being woke is a good thing. Republicans lose every culture war they fight in about five years. It's why they need the Supreme Court instead.

This is a great video, and something I've been saying forever. Many friends I had were thrilled that Disney threw its weight around in Florida, and commanded from on high that Floridians couldn't pass laws Disney didn't like. They felt happy because "their side" won.... but, they did not see that they were happy that an UNELECTED CORPORATION beholden only to profit was telling a state GOVERNMENT what laws it could pass and using "woke ideology" as an excuse to do so. This is true for other corporations as well. Laws can be unfair, and should be changed, this is true. But they should be changed by the PEOPLE, by VOTING, by DEMOCRACY ...because Disney might symbolically help the 5% of the country that is LGBTQ by blocking a law that...actually was just a bunch of posturing and wouldn't really have done much of anything...but will SQUASH the 99% of Americans who want unions, better pay, better work conditions, healthcare, etc. (including the lgbtq people who want those things).
"changed by the PEOPLE, by VOTING, by DEMOCRACY " good joke. democracy with capitalism is a good joke “Laws! We know what they are, and what they are worth! Spider webs for the rich and powerful, steel chains for the weak and poor, fishing nets in the hands of the government.” - Pierre-Joseph Proudhon
I think we can celebrate the result of this one particular instance of a corporation using its inflated power to stop something that would've been very bad for a lot of people (5% of 336,607,917 people is still a lot of people) while still recognizing that no corporation should ever have that kind of power in the first place. Although, if we're really gonna be honest here, DeSantis should've never reached the position of power he has either.
It's not my fault that the GOP is so far gone, that I, a socialist, who can't stand giant soulless corporations, has to side with Disney on this. Then again, this isn't an all or nothing situation. Disney can be right in this very specific instance for standing up for their LGBTQ+ employees, and they can still be wrong when it comes to almost everything else.

It's always so confusing watching these videos because its almost always like 19.5 minutes of solid information and nuanced opinion, with one or two soundbites of attempts to degrade or insult a certain group of people. Thank you for this video! I work for a hospital department that offers transgender therapy (which I have no problem with at all). It attracts ‘open-minded’ employees, but many of them seem focused only on cultural diversity. We constantly have DEI talks and take surveys about improving diversity. Again, this is great. But there is NO talk of pay equity in a city that has seen rent increases of 25% post-pandemic, for a hospital that just completed one of the costliest construction projects in the company’s history. I saw a post on our internal message board about pay equity (with tons of likes from other employees). It was removed.
They got you fighting a culture war to keep you distracted from the class war. more cultural diversity is not a priority when people cant afford to their rent

People are complex. Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man was written 70+ yrs ago, but includes a nuanced critique of [white] liberalism, and the way it emphasizes individual/shallow change, while sidestepping the more uncomfortable, deep-seated social & economic issues that have plagued America since its inception. Been a long time since we read it in HS, but you still see echoes today. People can be in support of same-sex marriage and green energy, but don't support trans-rights or public transit. Or they'll go hard-left on national policies, but obsess over crime & "good" school districts at the local level. That dissonance was what the original "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" play/movie was meant to explore. Comes up too in political-satire comedies like "I'm Gonna Git you Sucka" and "Undercover Brother".
A good mantra to live by. Wish more people had followed this logic last year during the rail strike - it was presented as "either we bust up the strike and force the union to back down, or Christmas is ruined and the economy is crashed". They ignored the much more reasonable option: force the _companies_ to accept the union's demands.
The two sides are globalists/elites vs nationalists/citizens but instead people believe it's left vs right or black vs white. Meanwhile, Trump is the only one who isn't controlled by the uniparty and wasn't supposed to be part of the globalist agenda but people think he's the bad guy because of talking heads reading off teleprompters.

That's perfectly fine because you are (presumably) mad at the soulless company and not the diversity itself. I feel like that's the main issue in arguments about diversity in media. A lot of people blame the characters for existing rather than the writers or producers for being hacks.

Good point. Like they said in the beginning of this video, black slang often juxtaposes itself at some point but we as a collective always remember it's root meaning. And also more recently on places like 4cham and other venerable bastions of the internet. I mean how many times has someone told you something like "wake up, sheeple!". Being asleep(not seeing, dreaming, living in temporary illusion, being unconscious) versus being awake(seeing, being in the now, the real, being conscious), is an age old trope. One that is prevalent I'm many cultures and languages throughout the ages. So it's a little more complicated than saying it just sprouted from black American culture and then we assimilated it.
@@mandisaw yeah that's absolutely true. My point is that it's such a basic and obvious concept that it's been repeating in history for ages. Like I'm not American, my first language is not English, but the concept of "waking up" and staying "woke" was a thing I'm my country in the late 19th century, because we weren't independent then and it referred to gaining national consciousness. We have to be aware that not everything is USA centric. But yes, the most recent popular iteration of "woke" owes a lot to black American culture. But because it's a very universal concept, that's why it has had such a prevalent global impact and staying power. I live in Europe in a non English-speaking country and the term "woke" is very prevalent, at least in the vernacular because it's a concise term that characterizes a certain type of people and certain types of policy and ideology. Like I move around in mostly left-leaning circles, who all use "woke" to one extent or other. There is always at least a little irony involved, but it is a very useful term to characterise certain trends.
I also remember "woke" being used as a way to make fun of conspiracy theorists, playing on the CTs saying things like "the lizard people want us to stay asleep." I think the modern use of "wokeness" is just the same thing as what we used to call "political correctness," which, when you think about it, is all about being performative. I mean, clue is in the name. It's about politics -- making yourself look like a better person than your opponent in the eyes of the largest number of people.
No I think you missed it. The modern use of the word work is purposefully tainted by the MAGA media machine to erase the meaning. And it worked. They were calling Brie Larson woke. Then they started calling entire movies and tv shows that woke, when they had nothing to do with Black oppression. They took this powerful word from the Black people and thy stomped the life out of it. Tactically, they disarmed the Blacks. That's what happened, and it was done on purpose.
'Woke' is 'Narcissism' in Psychology. Primarily 'Covert Narcissism' (the 'Woke Mind Virus'). Empathetic people will naturally despise people with 'evil' Cluster B personality disorders. And Covert Narcissists are some of the most toxic and manipulative. Woke is essentially "bending the knee to Narcissist Cultures and People". And this is one of the biggest No-No's in Psychology. For example, the Left-leaning black community is the most narcissistic according to all data and surveys. And much of that is due to the Left's coddling ('Going Woke'). Coddling and bad parenting both lead to Narcissism. Narcissist Personality Disorder is a serious problem in black culture, Islamic culture, Transgender culture, etc. And the one thing you don't do, is massage the Narcissist's Ego. Which is what the Left are doing. Particularly as Narcissism is the primary cause of crime (not 'Poverty'), and many other human social problems. NB: Actors are one of the societal Narcissist groups. They will naturally be attracted to Woke Narcissism, and the 'Narcissist Supply' of virtue signalling (attention and praise for the Ego). #WokeNarcissism

I refuse accept the word “woke” to mean “fake corporate social consciousness.”or anything else like that. While I am extremely cynical about corporate support of social issues and believe that corporations are looking only after their bottom line. This usage of woke on the right has turned into a way to try not to take any social consciousness seriously. It’s been used as a way single out lgtbq people, especially trans and not take their issues seriously. It’s a way not to take police violence against racial minorities seriously. It’s become a catch all term on the right not try to learn anything or take social issues seriously. And yes corporations are not helping these issues
It also seems to be the new dogwhistle for Black people, women, & any kind of anti-racism or anti-sexism legal/political action. A lot of folks in comment sections and videos seem to use "woke" as a catch-all slur.
I agree with conservatives at being annoyed at woke capitalism. But I strongly disagree with how they define the problem. Revolutionaries decided wokeness was a call to action against tyranny, liberals decided wokeness was applauding a call to action against tyranny, and conservatives... well, they took that personally. About the use of ''woke'' by certain politicians, I think it has become more of a characterization about people whose arguments should not even be considered. The same way that when people used to demand more economical equality, they were called ''commies'' ( not even the full ''communists'') and the argument was considered done, because their opinions were considered so outrageous and anti-American that it was meaningless to even considered their arguments. I would say this is to an extend due to the lack of proper counter-arguments and fear of debate, something we see today. In conclusion, using words with this intend is very bad for democracy in general, because the point of democracy is to hear and consider the opinions of others before taking a decision. P.S. I was recently called woke for saying that America needs more intercity rail and true high-speed rail, and I did not know how to respond to this.
"they were called ''commies'' and the argument was considered done" This is iirc called a thought-terminating cliché - it's just a magic buzzword that ends the discussion and to your braindead supporters sounds like a "win".
Unfortunately, this phenomenon cuts both ways on the political sixteen and public discourse is reduced to name calling and virtue signaling with all the nuance you expect from 144-character "dissertations " The irony is that neither side is really strengthened by pitting their arguments against the most robust version of their adversary so you end up with anemic and meaningless discourse.

That episode is something I bring up almost any time I want to explain what recuperation means in the context of politics. Honestly astounding how well it manages to showcase that phenomenon despite it not really intentionally setting out to do that. How power can take something, even something that very explicitly criticizes it, and somehow find a way to repackage it into a toothless product that they can sell for themselves, letting people who might be riled up by the message simply spin their wheels without actually doing anything. (just now hitting me that, I've been using the "spinning one's wheels" metaphor for ages, but it actually literally applies in this episode)
Nice comparison. The only way it would be more accurate would have been if someone completely different replaced the protagonist before he became a part of the system.
For most of my life I preferred Coca-Cola, but for a few years I switched to preferring Pepsi for reasons unknown to me. If forced to speculate, I believe it was my boss's idiosyncrasies rubbing off on me. He had a Pepsi everyday and I thought he was a pretty cool guy (in my field), so I was probably subconsciously imitating him or something. I actually recommend A History of the World in 6 Glasses by Tom Standage, which hypothesizes that Pepsi is actually more preferable to more people (based on some testing) but that Coca-Cola has such a stranglehold on beverage marketing in contrast that it really dominates Western (especially American) subjective feelings about the beverage.
I know what i prefer. Coke, its slightly stronger flavor and slightly less sweet, and possibly stronger carbonation. But some people prefer the smoothness and slightly sweeter Pepsi. But you're still picking one of a duopoly. When given the chance, pick the smaller lesser known, and avoid both Coke and Pepsi.
I was having this argument with my roommates when you posted this. SO later I will be showing them this video lmao. My point was, I understand the fear of target pulling their rainbow product feels like they are giving into the fear of retaliation of conservatives. The main fear being actual violence. I don't want my friends and family being hurt in my neighborhood by some crazed extremist when they are trying to buy a nail clipper at target next to a rainbow tshirt. So many people get hurt wrong place wrong time. But what I really care about, is if they are giving their workers a living wage. Health insurance. Standing by hiring people from all walks of life if they qualify, regardless of color or gender and making a public statement about that...repeatedly for the CHEEP SEATS. Actual policy change in favor of the people who stock those shelves. The People. The rainbow tshirt only profits Target or Starbucks or whoever. The actual LGBTQ workers don't get a cut of sold product. Black people don't get a cut of the "juneteenth cookies and matching hoodie". Its all slight of hand. All the colors and product ONLY benefit THE CORPERATION. so, in essence, what i'm trying to say is STAY WOKE lmao. don't get tricked into a twitter fire storm by all the virtue signaling. Call for real action and real support.
This. I'm actually more appalled that the Wisecrack folks don't have an affordable health insurance plan than that Target pulled an endcap to appease some gun-toting suburban pearl-clutchers. Maybe RUclips content writers & hosts should consider joining the WGA & AFTRA...
you're the one that's virtue signaling though. why do you want companies to adopt your ideologies, but not the ideas of others? for every pro lgbt shirt there should be an anti lgbt shirt to be more inclusive because pretty much over half the world doesn't agree with the lgbt lifestyle for various reasons. if you want politics in business than you should be oke with the opposite viewpoint no matter your beliefs..democracy. the only extremists i see running around in neighborhoods are on the left. have you seen those videos where the left has burned down everything, and countless stores are starting to move out of leftist cities because they keep getting destroyed by the left xD there are LGB groups that want the tq+ movement out their community, and i am not talking about a small amount of people either. the left is literally destroying themselves but you ain't seeing none of it because you're in your little bubble or something. i don't want to go to a store just to see a bunch of political propaganda messaging everywhere..people go to stores to buy food or normal clothing..the only propaganda i am oke with are big brand logos..that's where the propaganda should have ended.
I just kinda feel like we’re making enemies with people that could’ve been our friends. It doesn’t matter to me what side of the political spectrum you’re on. If you are capable of being a good person, that’s enough for me.
I think just like you, and nowadays I'm considered "the other" on the eyes of both sides. You basically have to pick a group to hate and if you don't you end up in the bottom of every comment session... hate is a very efficient feeling too unify people, unfortunately.
It’s all to divide us. I don’t care who you are as long as you’re a good person. The people pushing all this stuff are just trying to fill their pockets. Everyone not an individual thinker just parrots crap they hear without critical thinking
Yep republicans don’t get this they keep pushing people away who would agree with some of them. Politics getting treated like Steelers vs Ravens games sad times 😕
Thank you so much for explaining progressivism. Very good and wonderfully crafted points. It turns out that woke has a great backstory! As for your question, corporations loooove buzzwords. Business speech (BS) is crucial in their ways of communication. When your channel says things with meaning to deliver the message, they say things to say something, but say nothing. I think their driving factor is not maximizing the profits, but the fear of loss. As for conservatives' point. Woke (in today's common meaning ofnthe word) is not loved because of forcing one to believe in some values and angry mob that will follow those, who are somewhat disagree with them. And not necesseringly by fact, but by interpretation of those who judge. You can replace woke with "reverse bad word". Well, every group will be discredited by it's worst members. Because, negative thinking helped us to survive during primal times. And we still have this annoying feature. 🤷♂️ Once again, I very much appreciate this educational session. It's really awesome to explore the constructive side of things.
Great video. The top note of a cola is vanilla. Coke is extra vanilla-y and Pepsi is a bit more citric. If you are making a drink wherein the vanilla is to be emphasized (for example a paralyzer) then go Coke. If you're making something more eucalytpic or bold like a gin cola; go Pepsi. But me personally, if I'm just having a cola, it's Pepsi every time. It's CRISP.
Woke has become an abbreviateon for the sentence: "I am morally superior to you." And that's why it's become so divisive. Take any philosophical or ideologic concept and throw it to the masses and it becomes dumb.
The way anti-woke people use it, it's anything left. Wanting to ignore or continue oppression because it makes one uncomfortable is morally interior to acknowledging and fighting for equally.
'Woke' is 'Narcissism' in Psychology. Primarily 'Covert Narcissism' (the 'Woke Mind Virus'). Empathetic people will naturally despise people with 'evil' Cluster B personality disorders. And Woke Covert Narcissists are some of the most toxic and manipulative. #WokeNarcissism #CovertNarcissists
Fun fact: I have been discriminated against via corporate “wokeness” 😂 This whole ordeal is therefore for me an equivalent of rich slavers painting red stripes on their back and giving few lashes to random poor people on the street to symbolise their “feeling for slaves” 🤷♂️
@@Sang-Je I have been discriminated on bases of my gender, sexuality and nationality. This happened because the company I worked for aimed to improve its ‘diversity ratings’ on paper and its image on LinkedIN. I have been refused for a department change due to “not wearing skirt”, I was told in a manager training I would have been a good leader if only I would have been “adding more to overall diversity of the leadership” and was refused the promotion after successfully completing it. I was refused to be promoted by top management on LinkedIn because “We prefer to promote ‘more diverse employees” and lastly I was refused a project because they wanted to associate it with someone who posted job related promotions together with photos with his boyfriend on LinkedIn (who was also quickly promoted due to the fact). A bigot or an anti-intellectual you say? I for one got my wife’s name trough marriage just because she did not like my original name. I have been part of a ‘pride club’ in the company in question and supported their events directly. I speak 4 different languages. I lived, studied and graduated (Master’s) in a muslim country (where a I worked and studied in two different languages at the same time both foreign to me). I am an active member of a political party that is the most liberal on my country’s political scene for which I also held an office… I now actually work abroad. So yeah, you can be easily discriminated on bases of so called “wokeness” by a soulless corporation based on your gender or what have you, while it actually has nothing to do with how “woke” you are or claim to be.
@marknalberta lmfao yes meaning if u let people be bigots or racist then your silence is almost just as bad. You might as well victimize them as also, That's what that means.
I would love to hear your take on "Agile" methodologies, as they have become so prevalent that, to me, it feels more like religious ideologies than actual frameworks.
Agile product management is just an excuse to overwork developers and ship unfinished service products while having basically no plan and trend chasing.
This would be really cool! I'm a late transitioner into a tech career and Agile does seem ubiquitous. Having had multiple other careers without it, I'm actually a big fan. Maybe it's just implemented well where I work. But I would love to see a wisecrack breakdown.
Isn't "agile" essentially just a check-in framework to designate milestones and timetables by name? Once I learned what agile workflows were, I wondered why they weren't the norm in every industry. What is your specific grievance against it? I'm not sure ubiquity is its own indictment.
@@TPNYC Well that's not what the agile manifest says, nor their proponents and most practitioners. Still while I do agree there are useful things that those workflows might contribute, I don't think they can be the absolute norm as every context is different and that requires to not follow frameworks blindly.
As a South African who grew up reading Steve Biko and his Black Consciousness philosophy, I was able to easily associate with the word Woke. It was even more frustrating hearing Chris Rock use it in his latest special in the same manner as white people. Black Americans should really push back on this theft of blackness

Anger against "Allies" was always excessively cynical and annoying to me, but now that it's again becoming a stigma just to show that you are or approve of LGB (and especially T), it feels like encouraging people to not hang rainbow flags because it's "performative" and "virtue signalling" is just handing over the stage to the loud and self-righteous mob that are going to the legislatures and are boycotting Target and Busch and actually getting results.
because it literally is performative and virtue signaling. No one gives a fk about your sex or preferences and why do you need to fly a LITERAL flag to "show off you're an ally".. (also no one thinks you're an ally if you fly an lgbt flag they just assume you're not straight) it reeks of desperation and a need for attention. The idea of having flags for sexualities etc, literally just hijacking a extremely common thing as "yours now" like the rainbow is absolutely ridiculous. More so when you demand that it's show prominently everywhere. No one cares who you sleep with, it doesn't mean people enjoy you closing of entire roads so you can parade them mostly naked in an extremely oversexualized way not only is that weird af, it's not really strange that people thing you're a bunch of creeps if you feel the need to parade in leather bikinis with dog fetish masks. The reason why it's now stigmatized again is exactly because you people took it way too far and then applauded even demanded companies bow down to you. We get shit like ESG and DEI. It doesn't matter which way you turn, the .1% is pushed in your face. Companies are so desperate for an ESG score, they do the dumbest shit. COD always releases with country flags for example. This time? Not a single country flag .. ok .. but you know what was included though? Every single dumb attention seeking "my identity is my sexuality" flag that exists.
The thing is. No one is bothered by LGBT. But what is happening is people are tired of constantly being reminded of it and if companies start showing some interest in it then it becomes pandering. We get it. Lgbt people been through stuff. So have black people. I’m black. But I don’t need to get constant reformation or acknowledgement that that is what I identify with. I don’t think people of lgbt want to identify their whole movement on trauma. The idea is to be accepted right? But now that people accept you it almost seems like flaunting your beliefs in front of everyone. No other month is as aesthetically in your face than lgbt anything. Not only that but people in lgbt are so aggressive about calling people out for inequality that it developed people to be the exact opposite. Earlier I said people do not mind lgbt. This is 100% true. But when you start forcing or reminding people of said movement all time. Then criticize or condescend your morals as more right than someone else’s. It becomes the very thing people reject. Also my brothers gay. But he doesn’t use the LGBT to define him. It’s a part of him but by no means his entire personality.
Conservatives: "Would you stop calling yourself an ally!? It's just some performative, virtue signaling nonsense!" Those same conservatives: *have cars littered with decals stating they "back the blue" "support veterans" and "trigger libs" yet don't recognize the hypocrisy*

@@modell1084 what a profoundly disingenuous comment you made. Right out the gate, you started your comment with a false premise. To say "no one is bothered by LGBT" and to then frame it as people just being annoyed by excessive and unnecessary advocacy from/for LGBT people is patently absurd and falls on it's face under any myriad of examples of popular right wing media calling for the eradication of trans people and openly gay people from public life, the over 500 anti-lgbt bills being legislated in this year alone and more. The fact of the matter is that LGBT people are still very much facing hatred and civil rights abuses regularly and you'd rather push that under the rug and say they're making a fuss over nothing because it makes you feel justified in your own prejudices. "I don't hate gay people, I just hate hearing about them and seeing them all the time" is the most blatantly obvious homophobic dog whistle ever. Combine that with acting like you represent the perspective of all black people and like having a gay sibling absolves you of being homophobic speaks volumes about how misguided and delusional your entire perspective on these issues is.
That's what right wingers don't seem to get, or don't care to get: the LGBTQI+ community doesn't like rainbow capitalism either. It's just capitalism doing what capitalism does. Of course, we still call conservatives out when they miss that point and complain just because there's a queer character on TV now.
It's better than before, when corporations would cater to bigots by preventing LGBTQ+ from using their services. The moment the corporations feel that LGBTQ+ are no longer worth marketing to, that's when the real fear happens. Basically, it's a mixed bag. You might see people choosing pepsi over coke in Norway. The sugarfree version of pepsi (pepsi max) is one of our most popular beverages. They are acting like these small minority groups strongarmed these billion dollar companies into painting a rainbow (or whatever cause they want to capitalize on) on their products.
An accurate take an corporate wokeness, however I think you often fail to see how the same thing happens in individuals. They are expressing wokeness for virtue points instead of profits, but are equally uncaring about the actual issues.

In other words, humans are incapable of thinking rationally no matter what their “values” are.
That is a very large thesis to cram into a comment section.

It's not my fault that the GOP is so far gone, that I, a socialist, who can't stand giant soulless corporations, has to side with Disney on this. Then again, this isn't an all or nothing situation. It's always so confusing watching these videos because its almost always like 19.5 minutes of solid information and nuanced opinion, with one or two soundbites of attempts to degrade or insult a certain group of people. Amidst such a strong sets of arguments, what is the value in leveraging an insult that middle class white America's only culture is mayonnaise? It feels like an ignorant gotcha that is meant degrade rather than inform. Most recent videos by this channel seem to include at least one or two lines like this call your credibility as an moderate thinker into question.
I also received a (Red) Motorola Razr, but my reason for wanting it was entirely for the color red and I learned about the campaign from reading about it after. It did give me a tiny "oh look my purchase made me feel ethically good" feeling but like the usefulness of the Motorola Razr; that faded fast.

I always thought the term "woke" came from new age philosophy and that it originally meant spirituality awake.
The New York Times in the '50's had an article explaining why white kids were suddenly using the term woke. So nope.
That's "enlightened", and it too is Older than They Think
And also more recently on places like 4cham and other venerable bastions of the internet. I mean how many times has someone told you something like "wake up, sheeple!". Being asleep(not seeing, dreaming, living in temporary illusion, being unconscious) versus being awake(seeing, being in the now, the real, being conscious), is an age old trope. One that is prevalent I'm many cultures and languages throughout the ages.
So it's a little more complicated than saying it just sprouted from black American culture and then we assimilated it.
@@Shinkajo Enlightenment = waking/not-dreaming is old, the term "woke" as in socially-aware, politically-active is Black America circa 1920s/30s IIRC
I also remember "woke" being used as a way to make fun of conspiracy theorists, playing on the CTs saying things like "the lizard people want us to stay asleep."
I think the modern use of "wokeness" is just the same thing as what we used to call "political correctness," which, when you think about it, is all about being performative.

This usage of woke on the right has turned into a way to try not to take any social consciousness seriously.

I believe Black Mirror's Fifteen Million Merits episode showed it very well, how even "wokeness" can be turned against the protagonist who in the end just becomes part of the thing he sought to destroy.
American Capitalism is good at appropriating dissident / radical ideology / symbols and disarming them through compdification processes.
I've literally seen it happen many times on the internet through the course of about 10 years. Mostly it happens on the left, and I'm probably a bit biased because I don't hang out in right wing spaces. The machine itself can chew through and spit out even the most ardent supporter as soon as they become inconvenient to the machine, or there is something greater to be gained by doing so. At that level there is no honour, principals, ideologies, morals, ethics or even sides. Just the turning off the gears.
What does fifteen million merits have to do with wokeness, I’m confused
Pepsi is sweeter and smoother with less harsh carbonation.
For most of my life I preferred Coca-Cola, but for a few years I switched to preferring Pepsi for reasons unknown to me.

Its all slight of hand. you're the one that's virtue signaling though. why do you want companies to adopt your ideologies, but not the ideas of others?
for every pro lgbt shirt there should be an anti lgbt shirt to be more inclusive because pretty much over half the world doesn't agree with the lgbt lifestyle for various reasons. if you want politics in business than you should be oke with the opposite viewpoint no matter your beliefs..democracy.
the only extremists i see running around in neighborhoods are on the left. have you seen those videos where the left has burned down everything, and countless stores are starting to move out of leftist cities because they keep getting destroyed by the left xD
there are LGB groups that want the tq+ movement out their community, and i am not talking about a small amount of people either.
the left is literally destroying themselves but you ain't seeing none of it because you're in your little bubble or something.
i don't want to go to a store just to see a bunch of political propaganda messaging everywhere..people go to stores to buy food or normal clothing..the only propaganda i am oke with are big brand logos..that's where the propaganda should have ended.
I love your comment!
It comes exactly from where one would expect.
Michael and all you Wisecronians, thank you! Keep doing what you’re doing 👍
@@nospoon3822 Thing is, I don’t want to hate anyone if I don’t have to, and I feel like if I don’t want to hate anyone, then I shouldn’t have to.

It’s all to divide us.
I don’t care who you are as long as you’re a good person.
The people pushing all this stuff are just trying to fill their pockets. Everyone not an individual thinker just parrots crap they hear without critical thinking

Good call.
Once again, I very much appreciate this educational session.
It's CRISP.
Was wondering why I preferred Pepsi, it’s got the bite.
It's also cheaper and contains more caffeine, which were definitely the most important factors when I drank it to help with hangovers.
#WokeNarcissism #CovertNarcissists

As a black man, "woke" to me sounds dumb because its the past tense of wake or awaken. Black milennials think theyre clever but not
Sounds like internalized racism to me.
Fun fact: I have been discriminated against via corporate “wokeness” 😂
This whole ordeal is therefore for me an equivalent of rich slavers painting red stripes on their back and giving few lashes to random poor people on the street to symbolise their “feeling for slaves” 🤷♂️
No one is chastised for not being woke. You have to do something like being an anti intellectual or a bigot. Lmfao
@@Sang-JeI disagree, ever heard a gang of terrorists yelling, silence is violence?
@marknalberta lmfao yes meaning if u let people be bigots or racist then your silence is almost just as bad. You might as well victimize them as also, That's what that means.
@@Sang-Je they said anyone who is not anti-racist is racist
I would love to hear your take on "Agile" methodologies, as they have become so prevalent that, to me, it feels more like religious ideologies than actual frameworks.
I can’t find any information on the concept, except for some nebulous stuff about project management. But this really has my interests piqued.
Thanks!
Clicking things coz I love your work and you made me feel good about watching RUclips all day 😂. Appreciate you🙏🏽
As a South African who grew up reading Steve Biko and his Black Consciousness philosophy, I was able to easily associate with the word Woke. So it is quite disappointing and quite hurtful to see how, again, black ideology is being stripped of its meaning. It was even more frustrating hearing Chris Rock use it in his latest special in the same manner as white people. Black Americans should really push back on this theft of blackness
Honestly you get used to it st some point, that's why I'm starting my own channel to try and take back our narrative and SAns

No one cares who you sleep with, it doesn't mean people enjoy you closing of entire roads so you can parade them mostly naked in an extremely oversexualized way
not only is that weird af, it's not really strange that people thing you're a bunch of creeps if you feel the need to parade in leather bikinis with dog fetish masks.
It's just some performative, virtue signaling nonsense!"
Those same conservatives: *have cars littered with decals stating they "back the blue" "support veterans" and "trigger libs" yet don't recognize the hypocrisy*
@@modell1084 1. LGBT Hate crime has gone up tremendously in the past few years from personal crimes that are done against members or the tremendous laws now being brought up in states and passed in others targeting Trans people and Trans kids.

3. You complain about LGBTQ+ stuff being up everywhere in June but str8 peoples stuff be up everywhere all year round yet we don't complain about it

They may be seeking cash, but it's better than when they were refusing it.
@@greghauser742 It's a pretty sad situation.

I always found it strange that when a company choose to signal support for something "woke", the backlash is rarely just towards the company, it's mostly towards the group that are recieving the support. They are acting like these small minority groups strongarmed these billion dollar companies into painting a rainbow (or whatever cause they want to capitalize on) on their products.

Yes, the whole woke and cancel culture things are in fact virtue signaling devices. If social media didn't exist, you'd see a lot less people engaging in such behaviors
