- The Philosophy and Theology of JD Vance
There is a new wave of right-wing philosophers and theologians advocating for things like turning American into a non-democratic corporate monarchy ruled by a CEO, or merging the state into the Church and replacing our legal system with the Ten Commandments. And the scariest part is that these thinkers have the ear of people like vice presidential nominee JD Vance, and Silicon Valley billionaire Peter Thiel. We’ll explore it in this video on Curtis Yarvin, Christian Nationalism, and the End of Democracy.

Here in the 21st century, with advanced communications technology to share information and resources instantly, anywhere in the world, such a more loving caring world is not only possible for the first time in human history, but it is also of the greatest need, as the planet's climate is rapidly becoming unstable after 10,000 years of human civilization, and cannot sustain humankind's voracious growth. As someone who grew up as a lutherian christian in germany, I never really understood how America is so fond of christianity, as Jesus himself is described by the evangelist Luke as pretty much anti-capitalist, pretty much stating, that its almost impossible for rich people to go to heaven and low key feminist, as he allows Maria to sit with the men and even berates Martha for not doing so, basically equaling out gender roles. Jesus was also obviously a very tolerant man, as when explaining his love thy neighbour policy he pretty much explicitly says that every single person in the world, no matter who they are, where they come from or what they believe in and look like is said neighbour, pretty much a one world one love hippie sentiment.
All of this feels really far away from the people who are most interested in christianity these days, especially in the US. Do christians in the US not emphasize the evangelion as much? Do they just look over the Jesus part and stay in the old testament?
As someone who was raised Catholic in Hungary, visiting Lutheran church services in Germany somehow felt strange to me, like, you can do that with all this, too? I think it all goes to show that you can build either a very strict and authoritarian or a "lefty" community on the core tenets of Christianity. Examples for the former are medieval Catholicism and the Puritans in early America, while for the latter, are Catholicism nowadays with Pope Francis or Christian churches in Germany.
@@lutjemuller9753 just like in the islamic world... theology is the barrier to commiting evil through or against the community... so it is the first regulating administration which must be captured. Just as with its foundation... the protestant reformation was largely facilitated by magnates seeking to suspend and seize for themselves the Catholic Church's local franchise of divine intercession. You know... for beer.
Honestly from my lived experience(American and Christian(Liberal)) it seems like certain groups focus more on the OT than the NT and that focus tends to turn Jesus into more of a warrior than the socialist he clearly was(objectively not politically, but arguable either way).
@quietspark8703 yeah... OT is definately more along the lines of... [ok, this is the crazy s... we get up to when we're on the back foot and the scyth is swinging...] where as the NT is a conscious response to the shannanigans of the OT [ ...forgive us, we should witness our fault and let us NOT get up to it again... let us be guided by compassion, mercy and forgiveness.]
So many of the people that emphasize Jesus as a hippy or socialist tend to just gloss over the "Go forth and sin no more" aspects of Jesus. As for your interpretation of his love thy neighbor policy, he most definitely did not accept people no matter what they believe in, as he said that those who deny Me before man he shall deny before the Father. Loving thy neighbor isn't just accepting them as they are, but includes an imperative toward righteousness.

Questioning Capitalism is really not that easy for people coming out from the end of the cold war and neoliberal philosophy. It's often sold as human nature, a parallel of nature's survival of the fittest in economic form. That's also why free markets are an ideological ideal: It's just natural.
Now they are not neoliberals and steering the market isn't a tabu anymore, but to question our capitalistic system is akin to questioning natural laws for them. So of course they need to look for other explanations elsewhere.
Scary and frustrating that tech bros who have a lot of fans and support (and if they don't have it, they buy it) are going down this rotten path and drag US politics with them.
That's due to their ignorant assumption that selfishness is a better survival strategy than selflessness.
We've moved away from capitalism though, I'd argue we are not a capitalist structure, but we are a capitalist society. I think the thing that gets people the most imo is that people think it's inherently going to produce big corporations. But that's only unregulated capitalism if you look at the Nordic countries and most of Europe they are in no way shape or form a socialist society but much closer to the idea of capitalism they have smaller businesses that make them a lot more resilient and form more of a competitive environment which is good for the consumer bc it's driving the prices down while in most socialist society it's one of more usually an oligopoly which drives prices up due to no competition in the market. Plus if you are allowed to own your own business aren't you technically owning the means of production straight up like think ab it the issue is no one has a steak in anything anymore so allow people to start their own business and make profit and I bet you the city's will get better not worse, it's not for selfish greed until it's corporate.

One of the things that makes Yarvin and people like him so dangerous is the fact that they are never satisfied. To start, these guys are already coming from a position of power. Yarvin and his followers come from a heavily financed, and connected position. They also have influence on systems that control more and more of everyday life and yet they're still persecuted in their minds. They have all the means to be happy yet they are so miserable.
Insatiable greed for POWER over the rest of us.
This is the polar opposite of the truth

5:59 - the Bible also says to pray in a closet. It's funny that Doug Wilson wants to take six-day creation literally but ignores that passage. Gutsick Gibbon had an informative video series on Doug Wilson and Answers in Genesis.
Mathew 6:6 "But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly."
Man the entire video and comments section is just brain mush. No one is engaging with the ideas. And it is very strange to have yarvin front and center of your vid to then go on about christian nationalism for 95% of the vid. Yarvin is not associated with this ideology at all. Was hoping for some critical engagement with yarvins ideas.
We do live in a society where slavery is grey area
Millions of people have performed slave labor in American prisons
Are performing it as we speak.
Yarvin’s “cathedral” was lifted from Eric S Raymond’s essay The Cathedral and the Bazaar, which discusses the ability of those outside the power structure to work together to create superior works. Yarvin however just invents a new Cathedral. Very strange and dumb. Raymond has his own set of problems, just pointing out the whole thing is weird and dumb.
Yarvin and Theil look physically ill as well as mentally sick .We are witnessing the rise of the fourth Reich .
Trash World would be a grindcore band that did a single song about Danny DeVito and his wrestling persona as the trash man in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. One song, the song would go viral, the band would break up, people would stop talking about it after about 3 months.
Perfect answer
Then it would blow back up every 10 years for three months.
We are living in dangerous times.
It's amazing that the same people who espouse a governance that would give more rights to one person over another can never see themselves as the one who wouldn't benefit from that model. They truly have no concept of empathy.
I mean we literally have tons of those already in real life. Countries with dictators, countries run like corporations with a dictator CEO (socialism,) corporations run like countries as a dictator ship (Disney lol, oil companies, Trump)
Why should a master identify with a slave? I'm not someone else. I am me.
@Eldorado-n9e Yes, you are you, and what you are is a horrible person.
@Eldorado-n9e With that sentiment, anyone could justify just about anything no matter how heinous. It's also narcissistic, and on par with saying: "Why should I care if I eat babies alive? I'm not them."
@@slothachunk Not really since morality is not based around empathy, at least in any mainstream moral system. Morality can be an useful tool for acting morally but it's not where ethics are born out of.

I'm glad more people are shining a light on the Moldbug. Like you said, the Behind The Bastards episode was great. I remember reading about some sort of "Dark Enlightenment" and something about the Cathedral back on Reddit in the early 2010s. I thought it was just a bunch of edgelords, but even at the time I could remember noticing how the rhetoric was spreading like wildfire on 4chan and some subreddits. I've hated seeing this movement go mainstream in the GOP. These freaks seems like the type of people who would want a human as a pet.

23:15 That's because when Curtis talks about academia he isn't talking about philosophy and other impotent areas of study, let alone whatever community college philosophy classes you were teaching. Curtis Yarvin was talking about that portion of academia that actually wields influence and is the incubator for the managerial class.

I think you'd do much better to debate Yarvin, as this critique doesn't make much sense.
The resentment isn't coming from a racial angst, it's a feeling that the system doesn't promote MERIT. The ability to run these institutions requires people who are educated, well rounded, confident, and accountable. Practices like affirmative action promote a rubric quota over actual productivity, and actually remove accountability (a competent POC is assumed to be a diversity hire, and an incompetent POC is protected by law, so double whammy).
Yarvin is definitely taking the shortcut of: just dump all responsibility on one monarch, as it doens't matter what's right as long as everyone's on board. Sort of like driving on one side of the road or the other, there's merits to both, but it's super important that everyone agrees on it.
Also linking him to apocalyptic right wingers seems silly, there's an apocalyptic/utopic vision on both sides (Christian revelation/heaven, and left wing global warming destruction/city on the hill). I would try and represent the other side with more good intentions, so that the other side does the same to you.
The video is a regurgitation of some dogshit hit piece article in a left wing rag.
This guy clearly knows nothing about Yarvin. The point of the video is entirely political - "eeewwww, stay away from these guys (also vote for the awful woman who can't complete a sentence in the English language without a script)."

Trash World sounds like a Muppet/Sesame Street metal band where the gimmick is they’re all characters that were thrown away. First album is “Wearing Trash Face” and the central theme is calling out Oscar the Grouch as a phony
Your mind is beautiful
Democracy gave us a second trump term, so maybe “the people” aren’t exactly worth defending.
Just wanna play devils advocate here and share that I am a moderate liberal that goes to a heavily liberal college. And in my experience the “white man” is most definitely being discriminated against. Examples I’ve heard are, “if a white guy says he’s 100% straight then I can’t trust him” or “if I show up to a class and the teacher ends up being an old white guy then I’m dropping the class immediately”. I’m Hispanic so these statements don’t directly attack me but I can’t help but see the troubling bias.
Really? That's just one person or maybe a few people. Personal examples do not make a reality. If you are actually going to university, you should know that there are several fallacies in your thinking when you write this, and you post it on a philosophy vlog. Cite an actual peer reviewed study showing that white men are being discriminated against. You can't. They aren't.
On the Behind the Bastards podcast, they were talking about Yarvin with Ed Helms. Helms said Yarvin sounded like Dwight Schrute. Honestly, if given the choice, I think we would be better with the Assistant to the Regional Manager than a tech CEO

I was hoping for substantive criticism from the left, but this is a disqualifyingly bad take:
"I will say someone who's read and graded like thousands of philosophy essays in my day, it's bad writing. It's writing that wouldn't even cut the mustard in an undergraduate course."
You can't have actually read him and honestly think this. You can argue his ideas are bad, but how can you believe he's enthralled some of smartest people in Silicon Valley into holding bad ideas while having bad *writing*?
They have to be BOTH evil and stupid for this guy to maintain his sense of self-esteem as (I can't believe I'm writing this) a community college lecturer and vlog host.
Most of the people in Silicon Valley aren’t that wise, even if some are very clever. A distinction you can assume is ressentiment but that’s a claim you can’t prove, which is why reactionaries default to power to justify themselves.
But for fairness sake, left wing aristocrats and strivers aren’t separate from right wing aristocrats and strivers in their corruptability and attraction to power. It’s just useful to test the spirits.

My only critique of this video is that you continue to perpetuate the notion that rich white guys who got into Ivy League schools because of who their parents were have ever been “well educated.” They’ve been well pedigreed, but they’ve never been educated, not in the way you use “educated” here.
Being educated doesn't mean you are intelligent, or smart, or learned, it just means you were educated. Can't force someone to listen
@@Pepesmall I mean, you could call it education when someone gets a degree via the “gentleman’s C,” but I wouldn’t call it that.

My genre for the band named Trashworld would be Soviet post punk rock(but actually good). The first album would be named "Grouch's revenge" with a post-apocalyptic sesame street as the album cover.
What's interesting to me is that the Christian traditions that seem to be the most Christian-nationalist are baptists or non-denominationals (which are just baptists). Historically, baptists tended to be the victims of established churches and were often persecuted and censored by the government. Because of this, baptists have tended to be wary of established churches and hierarchical authority structures, which is why in baptist denominations, churches have very little power over one another. Historically and theologically, baptists being Christian nationalists is strange. If they looked at their own history they would see that blending church and state only works well for the flavor of Christianity in power... until that flavor falls out of power. They forget that what led the baptist tradition to flourish and have the political power it does was the separation of church and state.
You already have a connection between a church and a state. You have always had a connection between a church and the state and you will continue to always not live in the fantasy land contrived by a handful of unaware enlightenment-era thinkers like John Locke, Voltaire, and Jefferson. You just believe that there is a very special difference between your ideological edifice and that of some other religion, because yours is "politics" while the other is "religion". Politics inherently involves decisions about ethical matters which often derive from religious belief or cannot be empirically verified in some idealized neutral "objective" point of view.
So that Moldbug guy is basically just a huge fan of the corporations in Cyberpunk books/movies/games , what a deep philosopher indeed - as smart as the guys that watched Breaking Bad and thought Walter White was so cool.
