How I Failed an Online Marxism Course
After being served an ad for a free course on Marxism, Socialism, and Communism from Hillsdale college over and over, we had to check it out. So Michael signed up and completed the course, and along the way, gained some weird and terrifying insights into the dark underside of the conservative intellectual movement. Check it out for yourself in this video investigation into right-wing American education.

Please advocate for action. Talking about what is happening like it's just another normal news cycle is DESTROYING SOCIETY.
Our world is crumbling around us and no one really seems to care because they're still somewhat comfortable.
If you don't want to do it, hire me. I'll be the target. I don't care, I need a job anyway.
Housing and healthcare NEED to be enshrined in the constitution for the working class to have a chance! Hint: if you don't own a business or live off shareholder checks you aren't a capitalist, you are working class
Educational malpractice is a felony. Also reporting these things to the government comes with rewards. Free money glitch.
Play as you're probably also add that it says in the Constitution that any person that ignores evidence loses all governmental protections and can be served criminally and civilly as a citizen for the criminal violation. People really need to learn the power of litigation.
But they are just playing themselves as an educational institute which means you can sue them.

"Those Marxist want everyone to lose their individuality. Also it is very important that we are all the same!" The "conservative" ability to hold infinite contradictory views at once always amazes me.
It's just branding, and we gotta concede how effective they are at it.
I mean, if we're to look at this objectively, they have the hardest message to push through by far... "Your life is hard as a working class person? Solution: Billionaires getting richer" And somehow, they get people to subscribe to it.
Jep. The rights answer to marxism is racism, sexism etc make the workers angry at colored folks gays and such so that the workers vote against their own interest
You could also try the contradiction between "Our Founding Fathers created a system that assumes that all agents within it will act morally" and "Marxism naively assumes that people will work together for a common good that can be demonstrated to be in their own long-term interests, and will therefore fail." If morality is against human nature when Marxists rely on it, how is it reliable when capitalists expect it to work for them?
@@edumazieri What is the difference between billionares getting richer and the government getting more taxes? Why is one thing an injustice and the other desirable?
@@donaldhysa4836 lol you really don't see the difference? Imagine you order pizza with your friends (that's a government), and one of your friends (the billionaire) not only eats 99% of the pizza, but also doesn't pay his fair share of the bill. Get it now?
I love to get to this part when debating with someone and the person calls me "you are a communist, socialist, Marxist" and I ask them "what is socialism, communism, Marxism"... The audacity of some people to answer these questions whilst knowing nothing about the subjects is astonishing.
I'll give you the top 5 answers to "what's communism?":
- Russian Mob
- is indoctrination (I asked "yeah, but about what?" To what the other person said "communism")
- N@zi dictatorship (they were amazed when told the N@zis where fighting communist USSR)
- Government slavery
- a system to make us poor.
Bonus: a person was saying we should not read the communist manifest because it indoctrinates people. I asked "how'd you know?" And he said "I've read it" and I replied "so why are you not an indoctrinated communist?". Lol.
I love this lol. The best way to take the mask off is to ask them about it.

Pretty sure a lot of them don't mind.
You can pretty easily get to "mask off" moments with conservatives when it comes to social welfare. My dad, for example, considers himself a "fiscal conservative" (he's totally cool with queer people but if you're poor it's your fault), and you can explain to him that it would cost the taxpayers less money to just give housing to the unhoused than what we already spend on various welfare programs for them. He will acknowledge that. At that point, the mask comes off and he admits that it's MORE IMPORTANT that welfare doens't go to the *wrong people.* He'll gladly spend twice as much money as long as welfare doesn't go to people he doesn't think deserve it. These people (at least most of them) don't care if the government spends money (don't you dare suggest cutting the defense budget) as long as the money is going to the right people. Whatever that means to them. It's a complete "pull the ladder up behind you" mindset I can't get behind.
That's like peak boomer mindset. Even ones that don't necessarily identify as conservative struggle with it. If I hear "well, I did it" one more time 🥴
Conservatism, as a concept, must believe that there is a natural hierarchy to the world that must be abided by. Depending on the individual and culture, you'll likely get different answers as to who deserves to be at the top (royalty, the rich, aryans, whatever) but they all believe that those not at the top *deserve* nothing from the people above them. That doesn't sit right with me.
It's a pretty hardwired emotion in a lot of species. Just look at the capuchin experiments with grapes and cucumbers. If one get a a grape and the other a cucumber for the same task, the cucumber receiver flips out. I don't know how we as a species get rid of that emotional response
@@PsychicFrogBoiyou just described capitalism. @@elypearl826there are gay and black hucksters too. Their presence within conservatism doesn’t launder conservative bigotry, though conservatives would like us to think so
@@elypearl826True. But the people in this video specifically mention Magnus Hirschfield, a Jewish sexologist whose work was specifically attacked as being a form of “cultural Bolshevism”. They know exactly what they’re doing.
Yep I thought this immediately as well. In pretty much any right wing propaganda piece you can see thinly veiled anti-Semitic or racist dog whistles
@@elypearl826 Because people aren't a monolith based on their background. Fascists use token minorities to deflect from accusations of bigotry. The Nazis had Ernst Röhm, the leader of the SA (Brownshirts), who was gay. Similarly the Proud Boys left Enrique Tario in charge after Gavin McInness, the founder, stepped down once the FBI started keeping tabs on them. So now it's "The Proud Boys weren't racists, their leader isn't white". Even though their founder is racist, and a high profile member created a splinter group called the "Proud Goys" specifically in response to a non-white member being put into leadership. This guy, unfortunately known as "Based Stickman" (after video of him beating people with a club in Berkley years ago) was repeatedly defended as not a Nazi by the right wing for years. But he creates an explicitly white only and Jewish exclusionary splinter group and it's never mentioned mysteriously.

Wow. So that makes sense that they think “normal” universities are indoctrinating students with the truth.
When I grew up in an affluent, very Republican, Detroit suburb, about two hours from Hillsdale, back in the 70s and 80s, Hillsdale was called "Community College for the Rich." Their refusal to accept federal financial aid was not seen as some libertarian anti-big-government statement, but rather a clear attempt to evade civil rights laws. This was in the era of anti-segregation bussing court cases that divided Michigan, and Detroit in particular, by class and race.
In the 90s they went all Christian and hopped on the Limbaugh/Newt God-Culture-GOP bandwagon and found that the Club For Growth billionaires would write 8 figure checks if Hillsdale created a pro-wealthy curriculum that would have embarrassed even the likes of Ronald Reagan.
The rest is history.
Much of what these historical knuckle draggers in the video clips are expousing is the McCarthyite Red Scare version of Marxism that evolved out of the pre-depression industrial anti union propaganda.

What always gets me about "they want to destroy Western civilization/culture" is that Marx et al thoroughly arose directly from Western philosophical tradition. How is Marx not merely an evolution of Western culture??
Yes - to say nothing of the fact that Marx was like, "the capitalist mode of production is an amazing and cool thing that came from Western culture!"
@@WisecrackEDUAs I recall, didn’t Marx believe that Capitalism was a necessary evil needed to get humanity to the place where we have enough resources we can start implementing Communism?
@@SPDYellow My understanding is that Marx had a very defined view of history as this inevitable progression through different social organizations and means of production that arose naturally from the material conditions and contradictions of the previous one. So to him capitalism was the inevitable system that arose from fuedalism and was incredibly good at resource extraction and creating the conditions for the proletariat to achieve class consciousness and have the resources to inevitably enact socialism. Repeat for the eventual creation of communism. I could be misremembering of course.
Marx was a huge fan of Abe Lincoln. Marx did not want to destroy America, he just thought slavery was evil...which it is.
@@samcyphers2902 One of my favorite details in Harry Turtledove's Southern Victory series is Lincoln becoming a socialist writer and when there's an attempted socialist uprising by black workers in the Confederacy they're described as good socialists who had read their Marx, Engel, and Lincoln.
I used to be conservative, and what's been interesting is seeing how much people like these "professors" want to identify the working class as lower class and make people who are still working class, but maybe have a desk job, are not "down to their level." We've really been fed the idea that there's someone below us and therefore we are exceptional and others deserve less.
Excellent point.
I've had desk jobs straight through to retirement, and the vibe around every office I'd ever been in was that we were better off than those poor people in hard hats who showered after work instead of before.
Funny thing is, the physically laboring people I know felt that that was the attitude of the office workers to them, and resented it quite naturally - who wouldn't? Any hint of a discussion about politics, power or anything started with their assumption that we disdained them and therefore could be ignored ... while our assumption was that they were uneducated and could be ignored ... none of which was especially helpful to any of us noticing that the capitalist class was skilling our paychecks.
It's a handy system, setting one group against another for our mutual destruction, and most of us participate in it without really thinking.

As the right wing philosophy class is very American and right wing Americans adore the phrase "facts don't care about your feelings", I'd like to remind everyone JD Vance got visibly offended that he got called out for lying at a presidential debate and his response of "the rules were you guys weren't going to fact check" became a meme mocking him.
The goal for them was always "fuck YOUR feelings." They just used the eugenics approach of appearing like they are factual and scientific.

You'd be wrong too. At its core, Marxism is a materialistic interpretation of history; a rebuttal to Hegelian Dialectics. In Marxism, new inventions and technologies are the source of conflict between the classes.

@@greenjoseph4 I don't even think we can define communism that way, maybe in the sense that it engenders cooperation and sharing but, like all human social endeavors, capitalism requires cooperation, it just uses coercive property relations to get it and technically we're still sharing the wealth it produces, just in an exploitative way that is incredibly lopsided.
A friend of mine was in a sociology grad program about 20 years ago and he asked me to guest teach a class about Michael Albert's Participatory Economics which I was into at the time and all the same assumptions are there in the students minds but I patiently dismantled them and it actually was surprisingly effective.

Grifters gonna grift. (Hillsdale is the grifter)
?
That is true and most of the vocal Marxist or drifters too. Hillsdale gets their view from the most vocal Marxist.
That’s why the best critiques come from people in agreement and not the other side
@TheRelevantUnknown it's interesting how fragmented the Marxist crowd is. They purity spiral into obscure and esoteric factions
@@TheRelevantUnknown Unpack this. Agreement as a whole, or agreement with sub principles?
They aren't even really grifting. They are pure propaganda outlets. They are funded by right-wing billionaires to get their ideas out there and lend the veneer of intellectualism to them. People on the right noticed that academia was moving away from their viewpoints and hence they could no longer use them to get studies or papers to back up what they wanted. Hence they started funding their own "think tanks", which are basically ideological research facilities, to then push their narrative and counteract what was coming out of academia. This is why they all have such a chip on their shoulder for academia. The irony being that over the medium-long term academia does follow evidence. This ironically is the ultimate manifestation of what they hate, relativism (and as Jordan Peterson loves to say "power relations"). There is no right or wrong ideas, only ideas with the power to force themselves on others. So they are pushing all of their power into these ideas to try to bend reality to their viewpoint. Ironically, it will fail since reality requires no force for it to stand where propaganda and ideology needs a huge amount of "power" or resources to maintain, so like a mountain eroding to the forces of the earth, it will eventually fall apart.
Great video.
Went snowboarding a couple weeks ago and a skier crashed into me, bruising my tailbone, and instead of apologizing he blamed me then called me a transphobic slur because of course he did 👍
"I read a lot Marx and never had sex" is a good synthesis of my college experience
I took a seminar class on the political philosophy of libertarianism in undergrad.
While I disagree with a lot of the authors we read from, the class itself was great because you actually had to think about why you agreed or disagreed with what you were reading. The lecturer made it clear he didn't care what your stance was, but you better be prepared to explain why you agree or disagree with something.
I think that is the key when it comes to classes like these. People don't question what they read and accept it as truth, which leads to them easily being manipulated.
@John-PaulHunt-p4m So you agree with the gatekeeping of common land and resources by conquerors away from the common people, ransoming access to that stolen land and resources back to the people for tribute? You know you'll never be one of the conquerors, right?
@@dissident1337 lmao you jumped on his ass so hard. Like he dont understand all that stuff, and his understanding of Marxism probably isnt great either.
There’s something funny about the idea that communism leads to a loss of individuality, while right wing thought is focused on individuality… when in reality right-wingers are widely homogeneous in their appearance, style, personality, and interests….
"The Communists forced everyone to dress the same, act the same and believe the same, how evil."
"Now all of you put on your suit and tie, we're going to (insert specific denomination that all claim to be the one true faith here) church to all say the same words/sing the same verses together as we reinforce our identical beliefs."
i was looking for this comment. its so ironic that one of the biggest arguments against communism is "but you lose your individuality" when these people want a society in which everyone is the same race, sexuality, have the same hyperfixation on christianity and the same interests.
@@isadora6092 I can even grant that maybe they could be right about communism, but they think white christian nationalism is the solution? The problem is the solution? If someone believes that, then what is the problem with communism? is it just the wrong form of social homogenisation?

@slammermchammer malnutrition is not the same as starvation, especially when the underlying argument is that people can not afford to eat. Thanks to capitalism, that is not only untrue, but 180 degrees put of phase with the truth. Mal nutrition accounts for people who eat unhealthy things, often in abundance. A person who dies from organ failure weighing 500lbs could be counted as a malnutrition death and not a starvation death. If you want to argue that capitalism doles out unhealthy options cheaper than healthier ones, you have a leg to stand on (but it certainly is more complicated considering the subsidized incentives), but to argue that capitalism has not solved starvation in the western countries that most stringently adhear to the free market, you could not be more incorrect.
I started this course a while back to check it out (I am a philosophy undergrad), and then got bored and didn't finish, I think because I've heard these kind of arguments before because of my background. Thanks for doing the work.
As someone who has become quite fond of learning about religion it's a wierd place for people to say "we all have to be the same religion." There are common themes amoung major religions. They often blend together and form new ones that are more cohesive to a particular region or group. The irony of not wanting everyone to be the same while simultaneously saying we have to be the same is pretty funny too.
Okay, we're all Christians...but WHICH denomination?!
Marx had me at the destruction of western society and orgies.
I mean... billionaires definitely don't want Marx's critiques of capitalism to become reality since billionaires don't get any advantage for that and they have the ability to impact the culture of a state through media and marketing.
Marx on Religion, translated to internet meme slang: _"Religion is Copium."_

Why is literally every part of "Right-Wing Philosophy" just tearing down other stuff and not actively positing any thoughts of its own?
Because the only real “thoughts” they have are “white people objectively and inarguably good” “God hates everyone who isn’t white, Christian, and heterosexual” and “women are property”. It’s an inherently regressive and destructive philosophy
Critical thinking isn't for the serfs
Because there is no coherent right wing, it's just everyone not left wing and the centre has dissolved.
Because most right wing philosophers suck. There's some good anarchists sometimes and the old monarchists sometimes wrote good aesthetic philosophy, but ever since the conservative-liberal divide, it's mostly just bull. It's actually a bit frustrating, because the base tenets of the right aren't necessarily bad. Not all of them at least.
Because so much of conservative thought is simply about being wrong on purpose.
It's why anyone who was paying attention knew immediately when the pandemic hit that a *lot* of conservatives were suddenly about to have very strong opinions on vaccines and public health and that those opinions were going to be whatever is the opposite of the people who were already experts in the field.
I may be being a little hyperbolic in phrasing it that way but I struggle to call to mind any major political issue that's considered more or less settled in the last century where we look back and say the conservatives were right...
That course is the vibe I get from the average internet person when they talk about socialism/communism/marxism, and as a foreigner, it makes so much sense now.
95% if Americans over 45 think that Marxism is when government does stuff.
What do you think of this internet person’s comment?:
“Communism steals all your shit through the threat of death and violence, thus communism is evil.”
Yeah I believe the next time will be different. Definetly.
The idea that universities in the US are "spreading Marxist ideas" is hilarious. I'm currently in grad school, and I'm a Marxist. I have to 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘭𝘺 question how much of my Marxist analysis comes through in my writing, because being overt about it has never ended well.
16:10 refers to Marcuse, not Marx, as you state immediately after the clip. In Eros and Civilization (1955), Marcuse expands on Freud’s theories of repression, arguing that advanced industrial societies impose rigid sexual norms-heteronormativity, monogamy, and a procreative focus-to maintain social control. Freud, whose work influenced Marcuse, described early childhood as a period of polymorphous perversity, where pleasure is not confined to genital sexuality but is experienced throughout the body in various ways.
Propaganda is inherently a lie presented as truth. That's what makes that video propaganda, and what makes marx, and this video, not propaganda.

I'm a Hillsdale alum.
Just so everyone knows, these courses are for marketing purposes and carry no academic credit. FWIW the real academics at Hillsdale are actually quite robust. But as a 100% privately-funded college, it has meanwhile devolved into towing a political line for national attention. This is directly to do with the president (Larry Arnn, since 2000) being a right-wing THINK TANK founder without a real educational background; so he has turned Hillsdale into, essentially, a think tank that just HAPPENS to grant academic degrees. That's it in a nutshell. It was actually a great college once, and in some disciplines it still is; now that's all collapsing. Culture war BS.
(P.S. Hillsdale, I'm still waiting for recomp on the depreciation of the value of my degree, please and thank you.)

@@andginisin Yep. You can't understand the 20thC without reading Marx and others in the tradition. You don't need to become a "Marxist".
I usually blame the "human nature" thing on original sin. If man isnt greedy, no original sin, whole evangelical framework crumbles
Also if humanity is inherently greedy and selfish, how is a society that encourages all those traits supposed to somehow lead to a perfect world? I’d think that a better world comes from having humanity’s positive traits are emphasized-our kindness, compassion, and willingness to work together and sacrifice for the sake of everyone-more than when we’re supposed to be constantly competing with and trying to sabotage each other.
Then again, that seems to be one of society’s major paradoxes. They spend all your most impressionable years stressing the importance of compassion, empathy, fairness, and honesty, then you grow up and it turns out that they were kidding all along. 🙄
@@SPDYellow Yeah I always wonder how some people think human greed is a supporting factor for capitalism. That's like arguing that someone with a history of violating road rules should be given the keys exactly because of their history of violation.
Remember the TV show and movie "the saint"? Catholics were treating babies born out of wedlock as demons for over a thousand years
You can blame “original sin” but you’d be better served blaming intellectual laziness of many Christians. In historic and consistent Christianity, sin can be good things done for bad reasons, and a bad reason is anything that isn’t done from the position of passionate faith through the two great rules: love God with all you have, and via that love love your neighbor. So, in Christianity, humanism as its own end is a sin since it skips the first law: love God with everything you have. It could even be called idolatry. So, consistent Christianity’s “human nature” doesn’t require everyone to be inherently greedy, it just requires everyone to not inherently want to love God first. In the same vein, the majority of modern Christianity is consequently highly pharisaical and shallow.
