    I am a Subscriber. I’m both a retired Navy Officer and retired USFWS Manager and LEO. I live in western Massachusetts…and am planning in doing the whole trail, end to end, turn around and ride back. I don’t mind bikepacking, but I’m thinking lodging to lodging, and use local restaurants, Mom and Pops, and delis….for food. At the end of my career, I spent time in VT doing natural resource/wildlife law enforcement. Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge is close to the Swanton terminus. Im still in the planning stage Russ…but I enjoyed your video. I hope that along the way, they interpret wildlife and the natural lands and waters being protected. Also a member of the Eastern Greenway and the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy…great organizations!

    Russ, thanks for coming to New England! You're always welcome here. I am a resident of Connecticut, but love to visit Vermont. The Missisquoi Valley Rail Trail and the 93-mile Lamoille Valley Rail Trail, when complete, will be a big draw for cyclists. I would like to see more on trail or near trail camping options. Please bring us more scenic rail trail videos in the future.

    Great video. I will have to check out that trail as it’s just across the lake (in NY). As an FYI in case you’re in the northeast again, there is a Cross New Hampshire Trail and a Cross Vermont Trail (mixed terrain). Might be worth checking out online/in person. The two connect on the border of VT/NH and the bookends are Burlington, VT and Bethel, Maine. Planning to do them both as one trip next summer.

    This trail is a gem for that region. A few years back I was on vacation and training for my Ironman which required a 16 mile long run which I did on this trail. To this day it is still my favorite long run. The beauty was incredible. Perhaps a few trail running races on the trail for additional revenue and exposure to the public.

    That was a great look at this trail. Thanks! I took the Katy Trail across Missouri last year and I was pretty impressed by the signage and amenities along the trail. Every town has a little sign listing the amenities available there. And many towns have a rest station on the trail - made to look like the train station that used to be there. There's a bathroom, drinking water, pump/fix-it station, full trail map, nearby area map. Plus, historical info about what happened in the area - mostly Louis & Clark passing through during their expedition. If Vermont is looking for a template, what they did on the Katy Trail is a very good example. (Too bad much of it is underwater due to unprecedented amounts of rainfall this year.)

It's always really interesting for me to see how these types of projects are implemented in different regions of the U.S. I can imagine even with strong biking cultures whether in VT or say OR, the process and politics would be different. As someone who grew up on this trail and in Northern VT I cringed at all the mispronounced towns lol.
    But in all seriousness, the MVRT is a gem in Northern VT. Although I'm sure business would love more signage and way finding on the trail, that is part of VTs charm and allure. This concept of finding your own way, keeping things simple, a slower way of life. Personally I'd love to see more infrastructure built around the trail, and even connections to the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail to make a interconnect rail trail system that could criss cross VT opening even more miles of great riding. Loved the video!

    Rail trail towns will become retirement destinations as our population ages. Active retirees will flock to crime-free small towns where we can safely ride off into our sunset years. Rail trails are saving many small towns from economic decay, and the best is yet to come as retirees make a huge impact. Already happening in MO with the KATY Trail and the proposed Rock Island Trail will up the ante.

    30 miles is a nice length, but if it doesn't link up to anything, it's difficult to see how you could build it into a long distance tour. For example there quite a few trails in the South of England that will get you from London to the coast or along the River Thames for 50+miles and which link into other trails with a mix of off-road or quiter roads that can be linked up to make some nice 100 mile loop rides or which terminate at rail stations so you can get home easily.

    A couple of the trails in this area have had decent success with music festivals along trails of about that length. Camping available at either end, with local/regional music acts along the way. You would need space and services to handle the the group on either end, but it's a good way to showcase the trail and let the local towns and organizations sell food, raise money, and see how the trail can benefit them.

    Just saw this video a year after its release, but wanted to suggest an idea for an app that would relay info in real-time based on your interests and abilitiy to provide quick feedback at important sites and junctures. Regularly posted signs could have qr codes posted to take you to the app and/or a website for the rail trails in Vermont. Also, if you give permission to use your location data, etc, when you're done for the day, based on your the places you visited and your patronage, the app could provide you with estimates on how much you helped local communities and helped reduce ecological impact by using the trail.

    IMHO the problem with bringing traffic for businesses beyond snacks, cafes is the trails are too short to be on a bucket list to entice traveling to. You can get good local traffic but being out & backs doesn’t generate enough business. To be successful I think loop road rides from base towns on the trail are needed. We have the Miami-Erie rail trail here that runs almost the length of Ohio and is beautiful in sections but has unfinished sections and no promoting that I see of loop rides. If you ever want to come investigate we would gladly put you up for the visit. Maybe you could pass along ideas for growth and completion. Thanks for the videos you do a lot of fun and interesting work.

  • @automat8
    @automat8 5 лет назад

    This seems like a great direction for your channel. I had a thought about the while you folks were discussing signage and other local info in and around the trail. Since and signage (useful and/or commercial) can take away from "just nature" function of riding, and since the internet and cell phones are ubiquitous. Keep the signage simple and set and app. Are you sold out of patches?

    • @PathLessPedaledTV
      @PathLessPedaledTV  5 лет назад +1

      Currently there is hardly any signage so it is actually quite hard to follow and there are many instances when there are forks into private driveways and it is not obvious. Cell reception in this area is very spotty so relying on your cell phone solely is not a good idea. The idea isn't to make it look like Las Vegas with flashing billboards, but to make it so if a family wanted to go and ride it, they would be able to follow the trail and find services without getting lost. Also some interpretive signs so you knew what you were actually riding through.

    I just caught this video. Thanks for posting it. I live in New England and would love to ride it this summer. I have a few questions. 1. How much of it is actually paved? 2.Does one need a gravel type bike to ride it? 3. Is it safe to assume that it has just modest elevation inclinations as it is a rail trail? 4.Are there hotel and restaurant accommodations along the way? 5. I ride a recumbent trike( high end) with 11/2 Schwalbe Marathon plus tires….will they be adequate for this trail? Thanks if you can take the time to respond. Also…this video is now 3 years old…has much work been done since this was posted?

    Hi Russ, nice video. I'm from Europe (Belgium) and planning to come to US to travel by bike. But to be honest, I heard so many bad things about the behavior of car drivers against bicycles in your country...So I try to make my own and objective idea. I know that US is a very big and diverse country, and that the situation could be very different from one area to another but could you comment on this? Colorado and New England are often mentionned as bike-friendly, what about the West Coast and especially Oregon and Washington state? Important to mention: I am more a road cyclist than gravel.... Thanks for your feedback and congratulations for your videos !

    • @PathLessPedaledTV
      @PathLessPedaledTV  5 лет назад

      It really depends on where you go. There are jerks everywhere. Generally speaking the less traffic there is the less conflict. I think Oregon is pretty good, Washington, Colorado and parts of California. Haven't spent too much time in NE but there are pockets. A good place to look is on the RidewithGPS ambassador routes to give you a sense of who is riding where.

    Maybe I'm just asking for trouble, but having just moved back to the USA I've been spending a lot of time riding rail trails like this. I cannot understand why on these safe, relatively slow rides everyone is always wearing helmets. Is there really the perception that there's a great danger of head injury? From my perspective it looks as odd as if a group of runners or hikers were wearing helmets.

    • @PathLessPedaledTV
      @PathLessPedaledTV  5 лет назад +1

      It’s just the cultural norm for some. You can choose to wear them or not.

    • @bgearing
      @bgearing 5 лет назад

      @@PathLessPedaledTV Thanks, that makes sense. Was it a requirement or suggestion communicated when organizing a ride like this, or is it simply that everyone shows dressed up similarly?
      The reason I ask is that I'd like to be more involved in the cycling community but I find it a bit intimidating that I may be stirring a pot by showing up without a helmet.
