Forrest recounts his military service in Vietnam. He describes his living conditions as well as his group's objective: to find Charlie.
This clip can be used to teach about the Vietnam War and the geography of Vietnam. Forrest mentions that his platoon is looking for "Charlie," which is a nickname for the Viet Cong, the North Vietnamese army. The frequent stops his platoon makes reveals the jungle war tactics of the Viet Cong. Forrest describes the climate of Vietnam as rainy, as it rained for several months straight, and his walk illustrates the different types of terrain, such as dense forests and tropical lowlands, he had to endure.

I think it’s great that Forrest is basically unable to get PTSD due his simple mind and positivity. As you can see, he was a tunnel rat, and he didn’t come out with any psychological scars. Sure, he saw people die, but that didn’t really scar him so much as it made him sad.

Hi Cap'n Cake, I really like that comment! You bring up a good point I had never really thought of before! Forrest Gump is such an inspirational movie, and I quote it all the time. My brother actually has Autism, which makes me connect with the movie even more (I know Forrest did not have Autism, but him and my brother relate in that they are both disabled).
I actually posted a video on my channel 6 days ago that is almost like a tribute video to Forrest Gump (though I called it a Mashup). You see, there's a band named Family Of The Year, and they used their hit song "Hero" for Richard Linklater's 2014 movie called Boyhood. For my video, I used "Hero" as background music while showing various scenes from Forrest Gump. Aside from matching song lyrics with movie scenes, my intention with the video was to create something that is unique and heart-felt.
If you have a few minutes sometime and are interested, here is a link to the video: ruclips.net/video/Or-sIiNANYg/видео.html
If you don't check it out, no worries at all! I won't be offended! But thank you so much in advance if you do see it! Have a great day, and stay safe!

I disagree. I think he does have PTSD. When he's talking about the ambush and Bubba, he ends the story by saying, "Bubba wanted to be a fishin' boat captain, but instead he died right there by that lake in Vietnam..." and the scene ends and the sound of helicopters echo out as the camera transitions from Vietnam to Forrest at the bus stop bench slowly looking up towards the heavens and then Forrest says in kind of a low, sad voice, "...and that's all I have to say about that..." If you talk to vets that have PTSD Forrest is there with imagining the sounds and re-living the moment and it takes him a bit to snap out of it and come back to reality (see below).
Then the man listening to the story says, "I betcha it was a bullet!" and that snaps Forrest out of it and Forrest goes, "a bullet...?" and the man says, "that jumped up and bit ya!" and then Forrest is back with us and he says, "oh, yes, sir. It bit me directly in the buttocks!"

Can we all take a moment to appreciate Forest's professionalism as a soldier during this part of the story. We see he is not very bright, brave, or subtle in a lot of things throughout the movie but he actually took well to his training and we see him fitting in really well. The Fact his lieutenant had no problem telling him to check out that rat hole and how Forest goes in with that gun and light shows he could depend on him to do the job as well as anyone else in the unit. Later at the battle scene we see he knows what to do, has no problems firing at the enemy, and later bravely rescues his fellow soldiers without hesitation.

Most soldiers would tell you about the horrors, discomfort, and tragedy of the Vietnam war, but Forrest recounts it with a childlike optimism.

Some of the horror stories they would relate were horrendous. I did have a good rapport with one American in particular.
