In 1978 I gave my husband the three dog night’s greatest hits album. He said it was the best gift he ever got.

You asked about the favorite gift we ever gave. This is a favorite story to tell also. My husbands family does a dirty Santa exchange every year with a price range of 15-20 dollars. I decided to ignore that price range one year and make a lap quilt. Living in Wa almost everyone there is a Seahawk fan so I used a solid piece of Seahawk fabric with matching polar fleece on the back and quilted large scallops on it. Very simply but very well done. I wrapped it shoddy so it would not look special. When my father in laws number was called he chose my package and loved it almost as much as I love him. He immediately wrapped up in it. After him a cousin tried to take it. He was still standing there wrapped in it and very quietly said "no". This is of course against the rules since it could be "stolen" 3 times. Again the cousin tried to take it and Grandpa said "no". At this time you could hear a pin drop in the roomful of people, because Grandpa always plays by the rules. The third time he said no he said it a bit more firmly and we all knew he was not letting that quilt go. That was a few years ago and that story still gets told from time to time. It made me happy to have him end up with the quilt and happy that he loved it so much he refused to let it go. I still feel the best gift that year was watching him with that quilt! He is very dear to me and of all the gifts I have ever given in my entire life, that is my favorite. :-D

I thought that maybe I could add that thermal batting and make a couple holiday table protectors to usr under hot dishes. I love this idea for gifts. One of my favorite homemade gifts was one I gave to my son; he serves in the USAF and was stationed overseas. I dearly wanted him to have a Christmas tree with lights and gifts underneath it. But it is obviously tough to ship. So, I bought a Christmas tree panel and made it into a quilted wall hanging. I inserted battery powered lights on it. It got there in time for him to have a bit of home and family for the holidays. Happy holidays.

Although I like using my rotary cutters for almost every cutting job, sometimes I use a pinking shears which makes the seam curve more neatly.

In 2002 my husband was deployed with the Navy and was to return on the 22nd of December. I flew his mom in and surprised him for Christmas. He had not seen her for 4 years. My children, ages 5 and 2, did not know daddy was coming home, so it was a double bonus Christmas gift.

I’ve been looking everywhere for the pattern for this cute napkin I not only found yours but also learned from you how to save time by cutting all layers at once with your quarter round pattern! I’m glad I didn’t start my project until I found your video. I can’t wait to see more of your projects in the future. Your teaching style is so much more fun than listening to women who remind me of my home economics teacher 30 years ago! I just might finish this project in time before the holidays arrive. THANKS!

My favorite thing I've made was a quilt for my son. For 2 years I collected patterns (and made up a few of my own) of different vehicles (fire truck, school bus, airplane, dump truck, etc) and the look on his face Christmas morning was priceless. He has been sleeping under it every night since!

My cousin had an apron that her mother had made for her, with a teddy bear on it. The apron got misplaced at our grandmothers house and my cousin had never forgotten. We both have grown children and I have grand and greats. A few years ago, I was wondering what to make for my cousin for Christmas and remembered a panel I had with teddy bears on it. Well, I made an apron and she still has it. She was so thrilled and it made me happy, to make her so happy.

    Really cute project, Rob!
Another idea for sewing the circles is to sew them BEFORE you cut them out. You can draw the circle on the wrong side of one of your fabrics. Then cut 1/4" away from your sew line (remembering to still leave a gap for turning, of course). This would help to reduce bias and wavy edges! Some extension tables actually have a feature for sewing circles as well.

      Great idea!

    • @TippyMueller
      @TippyMueller 6 лет назад +2

So smart! That way the fabric stablizes itself on the curves. Also, there is less wear and tear on the template. Since the cutting would be done with scissors, there's less risk with the rotary cutter, too.

I learned this while serging circles for doll skirts. If I drew the circle, then serged to cut and overcast I had a very stable edge. It was very wavy if I serged on already cut circle. Lesson learned. Also if I was using standard serger thread, I could disengage the knife to do a second round on the circle to cover all of the threads that poke out when cutting on the bias.

I draw and cut out just one circle. I lay that one on top of the second piece of fabric/backing and sew around the cut out circle with a 1/4" seam and leaving the 1" opening. Next, I slowly cut out around the edge of the first circle (with scissors.) I now have the two circles sewn together at this point. Then, do my top stitching around the edges, with or without the rick rack. This way, my circles match, top and bottom layers. I do that a lot when sewing two odd shaped pieces of fabric together when making odd shaped items, even hearts, etc. instead of cutting out two of them, for a perfect match-up of the 2 pieces of fabric.

Love these and you are always fun to watch. Favorite gift to make and give (you could a tute on them lol) is chef's towels or chef's boas - 1 kitchen towel cut in half horizontally; 1/3 yd matching fabric. Sew one half of towel to each end, right sides together, raw edges together. If you like, sew matching trim or do decorative machine stitch on right side over seam. Fold in half lengthwise, right sides together and run a seam lengthwise. Trim seam to 1/4 inch. Turn tube right side out. Your towel has all seams inside and is already hemmed. Wear around the neck working in the kitchen and you will always have a towel at your finger tips on either side. You could also add a small pocket, patch, or embroidery design. Idea from a friend and people seem to love them. They're unique and practical. I chose specific prints and colors to customize them. Inexpensive to make, but pricey to buy made up. Keep up the great work :)

Cute napkins! Use some light weight double sided fusible interfacing, then you'll won't have to worry about shifting of fabric. You could use your method of turning a tube inside out with this as well. A "Sew Steady" for your machine will help with sewing a perfect circle.

I think it's the quilt I made for my son. He was in the scouts and had all these patches... what to do! I cut up his blue jeans he had outgrown and cut odd shapes out of the fabric. I sewed the patches and the troop badges onto them and backed the quilt with red bandannas. I used an exposed seam when I joined them so the denim raveled on the right side and red binding for the quilt. Now they are not in a box in the closet and he and his son can wrap up in the quilt while he shares stories of camping adventures.

Brenda it looks like a magnetic seam guide. Here in Australia you can purchase one from Spotlight but elsewhere any good sewing supplier should have one. I have one like this: www.amazon.com.au/Universal-Magnetic-Seam-Guide/dp/B07Y2DJVYZ/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=magnetic+sewing+guide&qid=1576375529&sr=8-3 My sewing machine also has a speciality foot with a built in seam guide. Either helps to sew a fixed width seam.

I am a multi-artist thus my favorite gift combo so far was hand poured, customized ceramic mugs filled with home-made coco packets, hand dipped chocolate covered spoons, and "matching" (or close to the mug design) mug rugs. But that particular gift set was started about june/july because i had around 25 gift sets to get ready.... THIS project will be much easier to get done in shorter time (they will be adorable in the cookie tins i am prepping) so THANK YOU for a great idea. YEA!!!

Using a half circle is much easier, and makes a prettier tree. Cut two circles, in two different fabrics, cut both circles in half. Sew the two halves together. When you fold it, you see the second fabric as part of the tree. They are much easier and you get twice as many out of the same fabric, cause you are using a half circle. There are other YT vid's on these style of tree napkin. I do these in paper for making my own Christmas cards as well. Rob, check out the Half circle version... easier, better use of fabric, does not risk the "cupping" you mention and much prettier using two contrasting fabrics. I think you should do a new video for that style. It's more in line with the MSQ way. :o)

Oh my goodness, why can't you be square? LoL! I am scared of circle sewing but this is a good first time circle project. My favorite gift I gave at Christmas were quilts. We moved into my husbands families old farm house and I found some quilt tops in Grandmas old trunk she made and never finished. There were enough tops made for each of the grandchildren, my mother in-law and hubbies Uncle. They were made out of polyester from clothes Grandma recycled, I hand tied them like she would have done. I also found some Christmas cards she had written to each grandchild before her death that were never given out. They went with the quilts. It was wonderful, my kids still use their old fashioned quilts.

I love this! Its going on my list of cool things to make this Christmas. Is the stitch guide a feature of your machine or is it something I can find and add to my machine.? I just started sewing again after not doing so for 20 some years and I've never seen the guide...but I could surely use it! Thanks for so many fun tutorials.

You can purchase one for your machine, Lisa. Here's a link to it at Missouri Star Quilt Co. It's out of stock at the moment, but if you add it to your wishlist they will email you when it's available. www.missouriquiltco.com/shop/detail/67125/brewer/-/seam-guide-magnetic-large-with-handle

Rob, I haven't seen a seam guide like the one on your sewing machine. What is the brand of the guide? Thanks.

Below is a link to it, Diana. Unfortunately it's sold out at MSQC right now, but if you add it to your wishlist they will email you when it's available! :)

Pre wash the yardage as soon as you get it home. wash it in hot and dry it on hot... basically abuse the fabric so it gets all the shrinking DONE

Really love these Rob, will make two for each person at the table so they can take them home as a gift. I did notice you had what looked like a magnet as a seam guide, for someone who has to concentrate to keep an even seam I thought this was a brilliant idea. I did just wonder though if the magnet would interfere with the machine computer? Could you let me know. Many thanks.Trish

Hmm, that's a great question, Trish! I would suggest contacting your dealer on this one. I always like to check with them to be safe!

I have a Pfaff, I'm not sure if the computer is at the top or the base of my machine, so will do as you say & ask the dealer. Many thanks Rob

A harmless seam guide is painter's tape. You can stack multiple layers to create a ledge. Comes off easily with no residue and can be moved when your seam allowance changes.
