I cant believe i didn't know clams are just sex organs whos only purpose is to ejaculate and reproduce. It's the simple things i guess and here we are with our big ol brains.
They can't completely close their mantle. You wouldn't be stuck for good. A friend got his scuba pressure gage hose stuck in the corner of one, but that's much thinner than a foot of course.
Giant claims mostly anchor themselves to the ground and are stationary for the majority of their lives. When they are young, they will float around as plankton before eventually dropping to the ground and starting its life.
Well, you could be watching worse things I suppose. Or you could be the person whose job it is to climb up an elephants back door to help remove a blockage in their bowels! That's a shitty job.
Exactly! But how many will survive to adulthood? This is the difference between k breeders, like humans who care for every offspring, and r breeders like clams.
Like any bivalve they have the ability to, whether anyone has ever tried to harvest it i don't know. It is their reaction to having some sort of debris which they can't dislodge from their bodies through normal means.
I just heard a quote from (I think) Pliny the Elder that says giant clams were eaten in Rome. Is this true? Were they exterminated in the Mediterranean?
Interesting! This species is native to the tropics and subtropics, so probably they did not eat that. Likely a large Mediterranean species? It would have been too far to import these from the Red Sea without refrigeration.
@@pacificklaus8189 you could import them alive in boats right? Changing the water every now and then. It would have been very expensive but the Romans were not the humblest out there
@@crabblab91 they dont have penises, they dont mate like we do. they release sperm into the water that fertilizes the female by being drawn to the bivalve by her siphons.
Let me explain ... all of these clams are from a breeding program, none are from the wild. The breeding program exists because they were almost extinct due to overfishing in the Philippines. The ones which are bred here end up on reefs to restock natural populations.
This is what Gary walked in on spongebob watching
Actually no
Its what spongebob and patrick raised as their child

It's marine biology. Take it as science!
I just watched a man make a clam nut..
Did you like it
Nope
Reproductive biology of a marine organism. Science!
Very science
Imagine getting your foot stuck in one while swimming
I saw a few when I went to the great barrier reef
It actually isn't strong enough to get a good grip on your foot.
Getting stuck in the tides is worse.
It wont let go!
They can't completely close their mantle. You wouldn't be stuck for good. A friend got his scuba pressure gage hose stuck in the corner of one, but that's much thinner than a foot of course.
Today I learned that for clams, you can make them splooge by injecting them with serotonin.
Yes, serotonin is quite universal, important in human brains too, of course.
@@pacificklaus8189 in humans though I would think the causal relationship is reversed 😂
Really? A video of a hole between two lobes of flesh accompanied by that music?
Lol
Science, man. Biology includes reproductive biology as well.

Damn clam been holding that back for years.
Imagine if u see these things move fast in the water like those small scallops

These stay in one place, sadly. Would be exciting to see them jump.
Good take away from the video
Did you even call the clam the next day?
"Clams are injected with serotonin, which causes them to release sperm."
Damn, never thought I'd be jealous of a clam.
Give it a shot (this is not medical advice, hehe).
I don't even know how I ended up here...
I hope you enjoyed a few minutes of marine bio!

Great sharing sir have a great day
Minor correction: the clams get up to 500 pounds, not kilograms, although that'd be cool
Yes, you are correct.
What if they moved with a foot like other clams, that would be creepy, imagine a giant tongue thing sticking out of that giant clam.
Wow, as a UPLB Wildlife Biology graduate, I never thought how awesome UP marine biology is 😁
They are doing a great job, yes.
What's the name of the music used here? Can't seem to find it when searching the artist. Really nice tune.
This was from a now defunct creative common webpage, the artist was just a hobbyist who uploaded his music. Bummer that he is not around anymore.
@@pacificklaus8189 Ah okay, thanks for replying. I shall remember this tune as the Clam Jam.
These clams really out here blowing their loads.
Hopefully we'll have more clams soon.
We just watched a clam have 500,000,000 kids
Exactly! But how many will survive to adulthood? This is the difference between k breeders, like humans who care for every offspring, and r breeders like clams.
Do they produce giant pearls?!
Not that I know of. Plus, they are protected, so no legal chance to harvest the pearls.
Like any bivalve they have the ability to, whether anyone has ever tried to harvest it i don't know. It is their reaction to having some sort of debris which they can't dislodge from their bodies through normal means.
It takes thousand years to produce the pearls
@@ThisOnlyDraven giant clams usually live for a 100 years maybe 300 in rare cases.
