South End - it's actually more expensive than you think. That $1,400 apartment price? That's for a 500 sq ft studio. 1- and 2-bedroom units are well over $2,000 a month. Yes, a lot of new food & drink establishments opened up as South End was built up. But most of these are new businesses, not ones that moved from Uptown to South End.
Nah, I love in prime south end, I pay just under $1400 for 750 sq ft 1 bedroom. I’m sure some brand new places charge that much, but $1400 is pretty common

They’ll probably become engulfed in more high rises as the city grows. I’d imagine something in a spiral shape that goes: business > residential > business > residential
I went once to Charlotte back in 2003. I got the impression it was much muuuch smaller. I also notice that unlike Manhattan New York, buildings are very close to the street and side walks are narrow. (not to mention everything is cleaner a real plus. I am getting tired of the grimy places) This gives a very different feel and character to the city and place. Also earlier in the video the place looks a bit eerie similar to Orlando Fla.

Then California folks came to graffiti are buildings and opened a shit load of Breweries which became the new dating scene instead of bars and it was normal to bring dogs and kids with you while you drink. And black folks dont just hangout uptown if we can help it WE HOUSE PARTY entire events and rent out venues which is the UNDERGROUND MUSIC SCENE which is the plaza midwood and noda area minutes from uptown.

The EpiCentre is not going away. The open mall idea floated in this video is more likely to happen to the Transportation Center next door. That's the current hub for the city buses. The city/state/Feds are beginning to build a new transportation hub on the west side of Uptown, about 4 blocks from the Panthers stadium. This hub will be the new Amtrack station as well as a rebuilt Greyhound station (the current one is close to this new hub). It is believed the current Greyhound station will be converted into the new home for the city buses, leaving the current facility to be redeveloped.
Uptown Charlotte is modern, clean, safe, new buildings & condos, mostly financial companies & business people walking around. Not much of a night life & entertainment. Basically you’re there to work.
Uptown has the Charlotte Convention Center, Bank of America Stadium, Truist Field, Spectrum Center, Overstreet Mall, luxury hotels, Discovery Place, NASCAR Hall of Fame, Epicentre, rooftop restaurants w/ skyline views, bars, parks, art museums, street festivals/parades, etc. Yet there's not much of a nightlife or entertainment? Ok, Gotcha.

@@eaglei0n Yeah, I live almost exactly between Charlotte and Greenville, and Greenville doesn’t even come close. The average apartment rental in Greenville is probably only a couple hundred dollars less than the average apartment rental in Charlotte, but Charlotte makes up for it with the opportunity, events, and nightlife. If you want a higher paying job in tech, healthcare, or finance, Charlotte has that to offer. I went to college in Greenville, and I visit them both frequently. The nightlife in Charlotte is way better. The only way one might find Greenville to be better is if they’re a homebody and want cheaper rent.
@@eaglei0n I’m trying to move to Charlotte next year. There’s little to no opportunity in South Carolina if you’re not tryna work in a plant your whole life.
I lived in Charlotte from 1986-2001. Spent much of my time in Matthews. The only thing I can say about my time there is that the area was, and still is, very clean and pretty but I never felt like I was part of it. I attribute much of that to being a transplant from Chicago, and not being a native of the area. I never quite fit in. The city exploded in the 1990’s and continues to grow. It’s claim to growth can be attributed to the city being a banking hub. Many large banking headquarters are located there: Bank of America, Wachovia, First Union, etc. I still friends and some family in the area. You are right that the suburbs now cross the state line in the south. It’s sister city to the south, Jacksonville never enjoyed the expansion and growth that Charlotte has. Both cities incorporated into their counties and host major NFL teams, but Charlotte capitalized on its merits and grew. Jacksonville on the other hand has just shriveled up like a boil for thirty years. One of things I remember about the area was the ridiculous Church on Hwy 51, Calvary. Just a huge Church that seemed so out of place and vain.

I hate Charlotte, I am looking forward to leaving America's most boring city.. The prices are skyrocketing and more expensive than Nick is quoting on the video now. Try $2000/mo now for those South End apartments. True, the city doesn't have all the druggies, bums , but there isn't much to do if you are not married with kids and South End just seems to be saturated with college students and doesn't have a professional scene you will see in other cities. There isn't much for single people here either. Charlotte is a family town and outside of South End, Noda, Plaza and Uptown its a giant sprawled suburb . The northern part of Charlotte and parts of East and West Charlotte are crime infested hoods, although gentrifying into suburbs . Most of Charlotte is populated by snootty suburban Northeasterners (not the rough and tumble and more sociable inner city types). The weather is pretty damn good though coming from the Pac NW. The only thing I will miss. THe food here sucks and after 9PM , good luck finding anywhere to eat that isn't fast food or a sketchy dive bar on most any night.
@@stephens9462 I guess so, I've never been to Charlotte (except in the airport) but it's always been expected that the south side of a city always has the Martin Luther King Boulevards and the Malcolm X Streets. No offense to anyone, I'm sure those were fine men.
The South Side was just as rough as the North a 12-15 years ago. The light rail being put in spurred a ton of investment in the area causing it to become like it is now. The extension or the rail through the north side should, and has already started, growing through investments.

Charlotte’s UPTOWN has always been that. The whole downtown thing comes from people from other areas. My mom grew up in Charlotte in and just outside of UPTOWN. In the 1930’s. My grandparents called it UPTOWN born in the 1890’s. Great grandma not born in Charlotte , but lived most of her life here. Yep UPTOWN. Why uptown. Because from outside of UPTOWN , you had to go up to get there.
I hate when yt people do videos tours of cities and love to point out quickly the bad “ poor black “ areas like first of all your people are there too on pills and fentanyl and the ones that are not either stole wealth free labor , nepotism passed down wealth like stop doing that
Nick allot of what you're saying isn't correct about uptown. Here's my rebuttal as an active resident and Uber driver here for three past 8 years: You filmed this during the pandemic, and so your account of Uptown isn't accurate. You saw it during recovery from pandemic shutdown which forced many businesses to close. Under normal non pandemic conditions, uptown is a bustling melting pot and everyone frequents the bars and restaurants there, in South End, Plaza Midwood and all other nearby areas. I will agree with you that Uptown is largely uninspired, even though it's the banking capital of the United States, with Bank of America and Wells Fargo now calling Charlotte home for their headquarters and forcing many of their employees to relocate here after years of flying in every week from bigger cities. South End today is no different than it's been since I moved here 8 years ago, and Uptown's night scene is the way you saw it-- currently largely populated by blacks only because of the pandemic which resulted in the local shelters here being closed and forced countless thousands of people (largely our black community) to be evicted or displaced, living on the streets and sleeping in tent communities. The people you saw making late night Uptown Charlotte a sketchy place to walk thru weren't there before the Pandemic. It use to be equally safe during the nighttime as during the day. And regarding what you said about Marijuana--- Pot is still not legal here, but people still smoke it, of course, but the scene isn't as dominant and in your face as you said. It's still pretty much a niche thing you'll find in certain areas. Btw, allot of the nighttime public consists of college kids from UNCC, Johnson Wales, and Queens University and there are many venues that appeal to and cater to them all over Charlotte. Lastly, I don't know the exact population number, but I do know for sure it's larger than 900k! The apartment building boom you witnessed began in 2015 as a result of countless millions of people moving here from especially New York and Chicago to escape the cold and expensive costs of living. Literally a mind boggling massive Exodus of New Yorkers fled NYC for Charlotte.
Nashville is probably more happening but traffic sucks there, the schools are horrible, and housing is more expensive. I think Nashville is more dangerous as well. Climate wise they are about the same. Charlotte is just a nice affordable big city to live, work and raise a family in. It’s kind of boring here though. The #1 attraction is the Billy Graham Library and #2 is NASCAR museum. Mountains are 2 plus hours away and the beach 3-4 hours.
Until Covid, we had the the theater, bars, restaurants, along with much more great night life. There was always something to do. Charlotte is a beautiful city. Just be careful of the west side and part of the east side (center st and farm pond area). Albemarle Rd at E WT Harris or Albemarle Rd at Lawyers are always where accidents occur. On the west side, my husband and I were in our car and almost got shot in a drive by. But as a side note, there are four sides to Charlotte and you have to reflect all. Before you move to any city, please be sure to research safe locations. Each city has its good and bad sides.
THE Bad: PayPal had big plans for North Carolina, with the scheduled opening of a new global operations center in Charlotte. Now, that economic benefit of over 400 skilled jobs coming to the state has been dashed by recent, statewide legislation dismantling local progress in eliminating LGBTQIA discrimination. Before N.C. repealed HB2 it has already cost the state an estimated $630m.
Would you be willing to share what kind of cameras you use for your driving footage? The video seems to be rather crispy and well stabilized in spite of you constantly panning around and making turns.
So... let me get this straight. Because it's mostly Black downtown, it automatically means that pot and lawlessness rule the area? After having lived in both NODA and Uptown, and frequenting South End for runs in the evening, I'm pretty sure the smell of pot is consistent throughout Charlotte. It's also pretty mixed no matter which end of Uptown you happen to be in, whether it be near the baseball stadium or closer to the main strip on Tryon. I'm not the biggest fan of the city, but I have to give them some credit for keeping it fairly clean and orderly amidst problems like the encampment & the shelters, etc. And compared to cities like Baltimore or San Francisco, can you really say you feel "on edge" in Charlotte?

Nah, I love in prime south end, I pay just under $1400 for 750 sq ft 1 bedroom. I’m sure some brand new places charge that much, but $1400 is pretty common
Brings back fond memories of the times I spent in this beautiful city. So nostalgic. Hope I get to visit it again. Thank you Nick for putting this together !!
No prob!
I have a sinking feeling those endless apartment buildings will not all age well.
They won't I bet you the first major storm come through Charlotte like Hugo did some 30 and 20 some years ago them apt be flat on the ground to build them up too fast
They will, solid stout construction , rest assured.
They’ll probably become engulfed in more high rises as the city grows. I’d imagine something in a spiral shape that goes: business > residential > business > residential
Believe me they are very well constructed. Much more solid than the ones built 20-30 years ago.
@@markjou9799 in terms of appearance though.... they’ve already aged horribly. Sadly I believe you though. They will last for decades
I moved here 4 months ago and I love Charlotte so far, yeah crime can happen here and it gets crazy but it happens everywhere, other than that it’s rlly safe and nice to live
Which areas do you recommend if you’re on a tighter budget but still want safety? I’ve found small older homes in Yorkmount for under $200k. Would you consider that area safe generally?
How was your job hunting
Im a charlottean and i wasnt too happy you didnt mention Blumenthal performing arts /Knight theatre/Discovery place/Dunhill Hotel/any of our historic churches/are new baseball stadium/any of are resturants/Hotel events... You just went straight to ooo the homeless people again which majority of the homeless are victims of gentrification and lived here when uptown charlotte was just pig farms and factory mills. DO BETTER! CAUSE IN THE PAST 20 YEARS EVERYONE FROM NEW YORK WASHINGTON TENNESSEE GEORGIA have moved here on the mergers of First Union which became Wachovia which became Wells Fargo.
I noticed he drove by Truist Field without saying anything about it. I guess because he thinks nobody cares about minor league baseball, even though it's the highest level.

Hey Ben
@@NickJohnson I love all your videos! Great concept 👍
Uptown has been ruined since Covid
1 year later...EpiCentre is officially dead
Uptown Charlotte is modern, clean, safe, new buildings & condos, mostly financial companies & business people walking around. Not much of a night life & entertainment. Basically you’re there to work.
is there more to do there than raleigh?
There is not alot of homeless shelters thou
Uptown has the Charlotte Convention Center, Bank of America Stadium, Truist Field, Spectrum Center, Overstreet Mall, luxury hotels, Discovery Place, NASCAR Hall of Fame, Epicentre, rooftop restaurants w/ skyline views, bars, parks, art museums, street festivals/parades, etc. Yet there's not much of a nightlife or entertainment? Ok, Gotcha.

Thanks Nick, I was considering moving to Charlotte from Vegas by the end of next year.
Check out Greenville SC instead.
Keep up the amazing content
I like the video. I'm a very visual person so to be able to see all this before visiting is really nice. Good job.

@Brian M im more into Cities I love Columbus Ohio great size great night life and i love cars and theres tons of Lamborghinis in Columbus and much nicer people
I hate Charlotte, I am looking forward to leaving America's most boring city..
Thank you Nick!
Funny how in Charlotte the South side of the city is the nice place, versus the North side. Usually in cities, it's the other way around.

In the 1930’s. don’t forget that everything is a black problem has to do with the government, war on drugs, even the name of marijuana and marijuana itself
What about the ugly? I'm just kidding, sorta. Charlotte is alright but I much prefer Nashville.

You and me both
Until Covid, we had the the theater, bars, restaurants, along with much more great night life.
So pathetic what they did
Would you be willing to share what kind of cameras you use for your driving footage? The video seems to be rather crispy and well stabilized in spite of you constantly panning around and making turns.
usually an iphone. this was a gopro9 but it was on 1020 not 4k, sadly.
So... let me get this straight.
It is clean and yes it's edgy uptown after dark and yes it's way better than just about every big city
