I just moved to Charlotte after researching and visiting it multiple times. I've either lived in or spent a lot of time in Cleveland, Chicago, Kansas City and Detroit. Charlotte is the best of them all and I never plan on moving from here.
Agreed. Atlanta is much more interesting but both are very good places to live. Charlotte is probably better because there's less traffic and crime. But I still prefer Atlanta. I have friends and family in both cities though.
You are actually incorrect there buddy. Charlotte is the number 1 tourist destination spot in NC due to all of the conventions and people who come to Carolina Panthers games, Charlotte Hornets games, CIAA events, NCAA games, DNC, RNC, NASCAR, etc.
No, Atlanta has taken the mantle from any city in the state of Louisiana. For a while Shreveport was the Hollywood of the South. But with CNN, TNT, Cartoon Network or any Turner Broadcasting subsidiary and Tyler Perry studios (from Louisiana btw). The ATL will keep the title for the foreseeable future .
Angel Gutierrez lived in both, everyone knows nyc is loud as hell but Atlanta can be kind of annoying at times as well. But i agree im kind of getting tired of the loudness all around
I've lived in Greenville,SC for almost 3 years now and the growth in that short time is mindblowing, almost right in the middle of the two cities, and our unofficial nickname is "Charlanta" so that theory isn't too far fetched.
It's weird to think that as recently as the 70s Charlotte was about the same size as Allentown, Pa. (Coincidentally both are nicknamed Queen City). Charlotte has boomed while Allentown has remained small and sad.
@@iammrbeat allentown and bethlehem are actually trying to revitalize their older parts of town to bring some more money back into the area, and while i don't have much life experience to draw from, I do remember as a kid in bethlehem seeing the old steel plant and it was honestly an eye sore, all fenced and rusting away. Now you have wind creek casino taking up a good portion of it, along with their convention center, (saw jim jefferies there last year), along with artsquest who has a little space in the old refinery too for their events. Allentown built a convention center for the hockey team and have a few small hole in the wall cafes, and arts centers, just still have to be aware and careful of which part of allentown specifically you're in but can be nice if you know where to look lol
lol North Carolina is known for great BBQ. Charlotte however is a BBQ void. Really good BBQ is mainly in the rural areas way out of the Charlotte metro area.
Depends on what type of BBQ you’re talking about. The city has more diverse options, particularly when it comes to Texas Style, while pork BBQ is better and more prevalent moving up 85.
The best brisket in the world is in a little speck named Peachland a little over an hour east of Charlotte. I'm a pulled pork kind of guy, but you can't deny greatness when it's encountered. John G's is where it's at.
I grew up in Atlanta and lived there for 30 years so I’ve seen the growth of that city from the beginning ..but now I live in Charlotte Nc.. I must admit this video was pretty accurate but in my opinion both cities have a variety of entertainment but Charlotte is more family oriented with events and entertainment choices.. The job and career markets are similar but if you’re into banking and finance the Charlotte is the place . Also if you are a blue collar worker such as myself you have so much to choose from and make a pretty decent living due to the open house if markets and cost of living...lastly the police here in Charlotte are much more tamed and cool they don’t give you a hard time and not so quick to get you caught up in the system for minor thing even though Charlotte has it bad apples but for the most part Ive not have had nearly the amount of bad encounters here in Charlotte as Atlanta.. so I choose Charlotte hands down for overall better quality of living... thanks for this comparison video ...
Charlanta 2060!!! I would like a high speed rail that allows for 75 minutes or less commutes between each cities downtown centers. Please have the central planners start planning the routes now, before suburban communities make it impossible or even more extremely expensive.
Same here. I've lived in Atlanta my whole life. My father worked at Jacob's Pharmacy which had the first soda fountain to serve Coca-Cola. Im from Atlanta although I have lived most my life in Jacksonville Fl I consider Georgia my home . While growing up in ATL I do remember everyone calling all soft drinks coke. Someone would ask before going into the store "what kind of coke you want?" Even if it was pepsi it was still a coke. The southern culture has been diluted over the decades so people probably don't say it much anymore but it definitely was a thing from the early 90's and earlier in ATL.
As an urban planner from Atlanta and working in Charlotte I have strong feelings about both cities. I strongly favor Atlanta as it has a number of happening inner-city neighborhoods with distinct sub-cultures. Charlotte's break to immediate sprawl makes for a more suburban feeling inner-city with fewer inner-city neighborhood spots. Atlanta's metro-region has more sprawl but with an aprox 140 square mile city limit, the city is far more urban. Charlotte 300+ square mile limit made up primarily of suburban developments create a less urbanized feel. Atlanta has a more intact and connected grid-system, allowing safer connections for pedestrian and cyclists. Charlotte's road network is highly disconnected forcing pedestrians and cyclists on to large and fast roads. (personal note) Charlotte's city government seems more effective at handling matters of urban development. Just some thoughts there.
I'm from NC and have lived near Charlotte and lived in Atlanta. For me... the ultimate winner is Atlanta. Just bigger, more food options and more fun. The history in Atlanta is more prevalent and interesting in my opinion. Also, I'm not a Nascar fan haha. Overall both great cities though!
P R little B No actually Portland, OR is a mid sized city and also Portland’s TriMet system is listed one of the best transit systems in the nation. I know this because I’ve been there three times and it is definitely not a small town
I've only been to the Charlotte airport and I spent 2 days in Atlanta, but I think I'd like Atlanta way better. Atlanta has the Georgia Aquarium, Six Flags, Coca Cola, and Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Hey we have Bank Of America Stadium (Panthers) and Spectrum Center (Hornets) since we are counting sports venues lol... But Mercedes Benz stadium is very nice 👌
I absolutely love Georgia Aquarium. But how many times are you going to go the the Coke Museum?? I think that Lake Norman is the kicker why Charlotte is better. Much closer than Lake Lanier and way more houses to buy on the lake.
@@TheTlewis3074 Charlotte's sidewalks, transit, highways, major interchanges, primary roads and secondary roads are all very immature compared to Atlanta's. They are a good 30 years behind Atlanta. This is all hilarious since every Charlotte fan seems to be deluded thinking that Charlotte is going to surpass Atlanta. Come on, Charlotte doesn't even have a downtown and it only has one very small skyline.
@@ausxau really? Immature sidewalks and roads? I didn't notice that difference moving from ATL to Charlotte. Charlotte struck me as a cleaner, more maintained city. No doubt Atlanta is about 2 1/2 times the size of Charlotte and CLT probably won't catch Atlanta any time soon but to me this is not competition. Charlotte just has a different vibe which I like better. Both have their good and bad.
Sweet. I currently live in Atlanta by way of California but I stopped in Charlotte via Greyhound and I thought it looked hecka nice though I was only there on layover. In fact I wouldn’t mind considering Charlotte as one of the places I relocate to because I definitely won’t be living in Atlanta too much longer it’s getting way too hecka crowded here and it’s great to know that Charlotte has a very big health care industry and I could easily get assistance from my Bipolar type 2 disorder. This is the viseo I've been waiting for! I lived in metro Atlanta and I've visited friends and family many times in Charlotte. I like both cities. Atlanta is a little more interesting to me. I have a habit of referring to Charlotte as a boring version of Atlanta, although it's actually fun too. Lol. But for practical purposes I usually recommend Charlotte as a better place to live, especially because the traffic is so much lighter and Atlanta is full. 😅
@@iammrbeat I bet! lol. 😁 I like the fact that ATL is basically the capital of Black America and lots of movies and TV shows are filmed and set there. Charlotte has nice places to shop and eat and nice trees, hills, and skyline but without the glamour, culture, or iconic status of Atlanta.
@@yarndude7443 yeah it's too bad, it really brings down an otherwise gorgeous and great city. Even driving in Chicago and its suburbs was a better experience to me, although it has a much bigger population.
Andydrew but one advantage over Charlotte is that I can always hop on a train/ bus/ streetcar in Atlanta or even bike or walk where I need to go reliably
I absolutely loved this video! I'm a Real Estate Agent here in Charlotte, and I can say that Charlotte truly is on the come up and has so much to offer.
I live in Charlotte, and i love it. Atlanta is great in its own right too! Its just Charlotte lacks a true identity. Its a city trying to find itself, which I hope it does soon.
Charlotte is a fun change of pace from atlanta! But overall I’d definitely recommend living in Atlanta. The fact that it has a decent subway system is a big plus, while Charlotte is just now building a light rail system. (ATL has one in the works too though) As far as culture and all goes Charlotte is a bit more bland for me too. But still a cool visit :)
Atlanta’s skyline is not nice though the buildings is too far spaced out. Plus, charlotte’s BoA building generally looks better than the BoA plaza building. Charlotte’s has a better design and light system in its crown but Atlanta’s………….😃 Nothing can ever top the BoA headquarters building in charlotte, and that’s a fact-not to mention, the duke energy building looks absolutely beautiful too.
I’m a transplant from Cleveland Ohio. I couldn’t take the cold anymore. First opportunity I moved to Charlotte for work. I LOVE it here the winters do not compare to Cleveland weather.
I've lived in the Atlanta metro for almost my entire life and have never met anyone who actually refers to any kind of soda as "coke." Although, chances are when people are drinking a soda it's most likely a Coke product, and it's usually a regular Coke or one of the sugar free varieties of it. I wonder if this misconception got so widespread just because we tend to just drink a lot of Coke here and it's not that we call any soda "coke" but just that we just often go for that one.
Awesome video, I've been waiting for this one! A current resident of the Charlotte metro, I really like it here. I've been to Atlanta too many times to count to visit family and consider it my second home. I love both cities. They both have a lot to offer in different ways. Although some would say Charlotte has no history or culture, I'd beg to differ. It's out there, and there are groups working to bring it out and preserve it. To me Charlotte is a big city with a small town feel. It's core is much more packed into the i-277 loop versus Atlanta's dense edge cities, Buckhead, midtown, and Cumberland for example. Compare to Charlotte’s South Park , University South End, and Ballentyne are much smaller, but have the same potential as their counterparts in Atlanta. On the transportation side of the picture, we can not dream of competing with Atlanta. Charlotte is in the process of making changes though. I think many residents have seen the benefits that rail transportation can afford and, though just one 20 mile line with more on the way, it is used by about 30,000 people a day. There are plans to add the Silver line from the suburb of Belmont in Gaston County through uptown and on to the town of Matthews. Culture in Atlanta is much more expansive than Charlotte. There is just more to do there. Charlotte though is currently building up its own identity. Whether you agree with it or not, Charlotte was just a town where people came to work in the day and left in the afternoon. It's uptown core would become a ghost town. That has changed in the past 20 years though. With Charlotte’s explosive growth there seems to be more and more things popping up to cater to the young or family crowd here. From breweries to art shows, baseball to soccer very soon, Charlotte is finally finding its own place in the southeast. In the grand scheme of things, Atlanta's metro is just bigger and has more to do. But if you are looking for a slower pace and less traffic, I'd choose Charlotte any day. I love Atlanta though! And I'm sure if a few things in my life went differently, I would be calling it home. But for now I just have to be satisfied with the trips I take down 85. (p.s. ; Atlanta city proper is much smaller at 486,000 vs Charlotte’s 856,000. But it's metro drawfs Metrolina. Everything just blends so perfectly that if you live in Douglas County, you can still say that you are from Atlanta)
Charlotte and North Carolina in general don't really have as rich of a history as surrounding states. Compared to Georgia, North Carolina's history is miniscule and insignificant.
Wow I live in Douglas County and say I live in Atlanta haha (I’m probably going to move to Atlanta proper soon though, or at least near a subway station outside the city)
I've lived in the Atlanta Metro area nearly my whole life. No one calls soft drinks coke. People may call Pepsi (and other Cola drinks) Coke, but people aren't going around calling Fanta, or Sprite, or Mountain Dew Coke. That's just wholly inaccurate. I don't know about Charlotte, but people here call it soda.
Nice.i been to both.i can't pick side, I like both, live in Charlotte, I didn't want to come back.the diversity in Orlando and tampa.i like it, most cities not like that, Atlanta have more black folks than Charlotte ,I like that, seeing my black people's own business, in Charlotte, it's lot of white commercial business.teade places anytime.lol
Born, raised and lived in Atlanta all my life (with the exception of my 4 years in the military). At age 47 my job transferred me to Charlotte. I have no regrets coming here. Now that I've been here a couple of years, I'll take Charlotte over Atlanta anytime.
Have never been to Charlotte, but I'm a proud Atlantian. My brother is moving to Charlotte in a few weeks so it'll be interesting to see how much he picks on the things mentioned in this video.
Very much enjoyed the video. I was a resident of Charlotte from 2000 to 2008 and Atlanta from 2008 to today (2020). In the grand scheme of things taking in all major American cities, they are very much cousins as your video demonstrates -- much more like each other than say Seattle or Phoenix or Pittsburgh or DC, etc. I like both cities, but I have to give the edge to Charlotte. I had more of a sense of community there. I just felt more "at home" and had a better network of friends. It was easier to get around in Charlotte and get things done. I have taken lots of long walks in both cities, and Charlotte just felt a little more right. I had a better rhythm life. Atlanta pluses: Less snow and ice. More international/cosmopolitan feel to ATL. More job opportunities. There's more to see and discover here. More health care options here. I longed to go back to Charlotte my first few years here. Now I've settled in. Out of nothing more than laziness, I'd probably stay in Atlanta over moving back to Charlotte. Twelve years later, it would be hard to recapture the "magic."
Charlotte is currently where Atlanta was in the late 80's and early 90's. But Charlotte's planning organizations are playing it much smarter in designing the city with better zoning and pushing for better transit in the future. Atlanta got really lucky with Seattle turning down federal billions of dollars for their big bang funded MARTA heavy rail system which has been mostly stagnant since. Charlotte is developing as a city much more quickly than Atlanta because of how much smaller it currently is so everything is kind of newer in a sense. Atlanta is a much more "world class" city though especially since they hosted the olympics in the 90s.
@@40EastTrill Yeah by city limits. But if you expanded ATL out to the same city limit size it'd be around 1.1 million (using Atlanta's city density with Charlotte's Area)
@@40EastTrill that's because much of what we consider Atlanta is actually suburbs. ATL has a huge metropolitan area. And the way the highways are set up. It's all connected.
I currently live right outside ATL. Lived in Charlotte at one point a few years ago. Both are great cities overall. I sometimes think of Charlotte as a mini Atlanta.
As a native to Charlotte, I would say our biggest drawback is the lack of a rooted culture. My parents did not grow up here, rather in NY and RI, and there are many many residents who moved here rather than grew up here. There isn't really a common identifier that I can think of that defines the city positively or negatively.
I have lived here in Charlotte for 10 years after living in So Cal for 27. I drive from Charlotte to Atlanta daily for my job. I love Charlotte because it is big enough to have many things NFL, NBA, Nascar and draw popular concerts. The traffic getting in and out of Atlanta is a nightmare! As are the drivers in Atlanta! Traffic is much better in Charlotte unless you live in SC off of the 77.
Atlanta's Jewish population has grown much faster than Charlotte's in the past few decades. Whereas as recently as the 1980s Atlanta had just 20,000 or so Jews and Charlotte had just 4000 (a five-fold difference), in the past 15 or so years, the corresponding figures were 100,000+ and 10,000 (at least a ten-fold difference). In fact, Atlanta has become - at least demographically - one of the top Jewish communities outside the Northeast, South Florida, and California (where most American Jews live).
Charlotte isn’t the only metro area in NC so they say it’s a smaller city. More people live in the city limits of Charlotte than Atlanta. If Charlotte didn’t have the piedmont triad metro and Raleigh Durham triangle it would by far have a further metro area. The states are by both #8 and #9 in population, though most of GA residents live near Atlanta, while NC is more spread out with less land area.
Charlotte has a grid layout and is easier to get around. Plus it has Carrowinds- which is awesome. Atlanta is very confusing to get around. From my experience, Atlanta has worse traffic.
Lived in metro Atlanta in 1990-1991 (Tucker). Used to visit a friend who lived on Monroe Dr-a couple of blocks from Piedmont Park. So glad it's still called Piedmont Park! Also visited CNN studios when my friend was interviewed there. While I'm glad I'm in NJ, I have fond memories of Atlanta in 1990.

You are actually incorrect there buddy. Charlotte is the number 1 tourist destination spot in NC due to all of the conventions and people who come to Carolina Panthers games, Charlotte Hornets games, CIAA events, NCAA games, DNC, RNC, NASCAR, etc.

It's called "Hollywood South," but both Atlanta and Los Angeles sit at about 34º north.

It's weird to think that as recently as the 70s Charlotte was about the same size as Allentown, Pa. (Coincidentally both are nicknamed Queen City). Charlotte has boomed while Allentown has remained small and sad.
Yep, Allentown being an old Rust Belt town and Charlotte being in the Sun Belt. :)

Now you have wind creek casino taking up a good portion of it, along with their convention center, (saw jim jefferies there last year), along with artsquest who has a little space in the old refinery too for their events.

Depends on what type of BBQ you’re talking about. The city has more diverse options, particularly when it comes to Texas Style, while pork BBQ is better and more prevalent moving up 85.

I’ve never heard anyone refer to soda as Coke when they weren’t referring to Coca-Cola
Same here. I've lived in Atlanta my whole life. My father worked at Jacob's Pharmacy which had the first soda fountain to serve Coca-Cola. I've never heard a single person refer to a soft drink generically as a "Coke" or "Coca-Cola". People usually just name the specific softdrink, which they want. Coke, Pepsi, Sprite, Dr Pepper, etc
Over the the years, when I've heard soft drinks referenced, I've heard "cold drink", "soft drink", & "soda", & rarely "fountain drink" & "carbonated drink", usually as part of the question, "Do you want a "cold drink?" followed by, what kind? I have ...", but I believe that the use of Coke or Coca-Cola as a generic term is a myth in Atlanta and probably throughout the South. ...I can't speak for anywhere else.
Rollin Jenkins, I’ve lived in Atlanta for almost 20 years.
I'm from So Cal... grew up calling all soft drinks cokes. My favorite coke was Orange Crush!

No thanks the traffic is already pretty bad here.
Well said and I totally agree!
That is a fact
Agree however Charlotte will infill over the next 20 years and great neighborhoods will blossom.

Can we PLEASE stop with this stereotype that we call every soda a Coke in the south. The ONLY thing we call a coke is an actual Coke
Right. It's "cold drink" here in the New Orleans area.
Coke is all over the world
Ikr, don’t know where these people get there facts
Here in Georgia I had never heard anyone say that before but my mom has and she says it's because coke was made here and it was the big soda here.
Its not a stereotype, its a generalization that doesn't apply to more developed areas

Although, chances are when people are drinking a soda it's most likely a Coke product, and it's usually a regular Coke or one of the sugar free varieties of it.

Thanks for sharing all that. It's good to get your perspective. :)
Charlotte and North Carolina in general don't really have as rich of a history as surrounding states. Compared to Georgia, North Carolina's history is miniscule and insignificant.

I have stayed in both cities and Atlanta feels more modern and fun to live in.

Whereas as recently as the 1980s Atlanta had just 20,000 or so Jews and Charlotte had just 4000 (a five-fold difference), in the past 15 or so years, the corresponding figures were 100,000+ and 10,000 (at least a ten-fold difference). @@TomCook-jw6ur Maybe that's the reason why US Airways is not around anymore. 🤷🏾♂️
@@sohopedeco US Airways was taken over by American Airlines. There is no longer a flight from Charlotte to São Paulo. Must go through Miami
@@timothycook2917 Which is an a lot more sensible choice. My friend traveled to Disney World in that US Airways flight; pretty much nobody in that plane was heading to North Carolina.
Atlanta metropolis resident here, I’ve been to midtown a few times and uptown (Buckhead) once.
NO other city in the South can beat us! Fax!
So you Charloittans got NASCAR? Aw, we got COCA-COLA! EVERYONE LOVES COKE. (I went to the Coca-Cola Center recently.)
The Atlanta skyline is SO beautiful! I was born after the 1996 Olympics, so I never went.
ATL is a THOUSAND times better than cHaRlOTTe. And Atlanta has another nickname “The City Too Busy To Hate”.
(Also we have the worst traffic in America, out of our way LA.)
Yeah I've been to Atlanta a couple times and was always amazed by the hustle and bustle there.
Worst Traffic?🤔
LA
Houston
NYC
Dallas
Chicago
Boston
Austin
would like to argue that..and so would I.
You got Coke.... GOOD FOR YOU! Pepsi started in NC so what's your point? I never heard of "The City Too Busy To Hate." That's funny because you hate on Charlotte every chance you get lmao
@@martinpohl1398 He meant to say the worst stretch of interstate I-285 ESPECIALLY the "Top-End' between I-75 in Vinings (Cumberland), GA-400 in Sandy Springs/Dunwoody, and I-85 in Chamblee/ Doraville/ Brookhaven. Since no-one lives in Atlanta suburbs commuting sucks ass. Believe me sitting in traffic for 3+hrs not moving can really hurt. and the lanes are 6-8 on both sides gridlocked so that says a lot.
There is also much pretentiousness in ATL and people are very ignorant. I'm not talking about you but...🤣😉 Queen city, yea!
Live in Charlotte, been to Atlanta several times. Agree that traffic is better in Charlotte but Atlanta has a bit more to do
I lived in Charlotte, moved to Atlanta for two years and then said this sucks and moved back to Charlotte. Haven’t moved anywhere since. I prefer living in Charlotte.
James Martone I currently live in Atlanta and I don’t blame you for leaving at all. I’m tired of living here is way too crowded here too here but I have recently been through Charlotte via Greyhound and although I was just on layover it seems like it wouldn’t be a bad place to relocate to. Good thing it isn’t too far away from Atlanta so that I can actually visit and to experience life in Charlotte one day in the near future
In the south its atlanta, miami, houston, new orleans. Thats it everybody else are just small time cities
Rico Chico New Orleans isn’t that big population wise. But it definitely has more of a city feel than a lot of other southern cities cuz it’s more dense and unique
local bruhman Houston is definitely the south, but the western part of Texas like El Paso is more like the Southwest
Charlotte will always be Atlanta's little brother or sister
Maybe Chattahoochee but not Charlotte lol
Charlotte is older.
CLT is older and has a bigger population...
Pittsburgh vs Cleveland
Yeah
REALLY?! GET REAL, WAKE ☝ UP AND SMELL 👃THE ☕COFFEE.
@@MickyTubbs1985 chill out, dude lol
Lived in Charlotte for 8 years & moved to Atlanta about 2 years ago. Both are great cities and very clean. But of course with Atlanta being bigger there so much more to do.
Charlotte has cheerwine Sundrop and Nehi
Coca Cola Bottling Co. is here too.
