I mean I totally see the mentality that it invalidates the life total, I feel that way about infect I guess I just think commander damage has a cool personal element and serves as a build around mechanic that makes the game more combat focused which I think is overall fun and cool
@@lfwalrusI also like it as an out against lifegain. Without commander damage as a threat it can feel like a heavy lifegain deck just invalidates combat as a wincon.
My favourite part was Ben proclaiming "see, commander damage did not matter, just like it does in any commander game" before passing the turn and then having commander damage matter immediately. The sheer amount of delicious irony was palpable
What makes it even more hilarious is that the rest of the table just ignored Ben conceding before the damage was dealt and still gave Chris all that extra lifelink life.
Ben Brode's fervent attitude towards rhystic study and inexplicably hatred of Commander damage alongside all of the needling and prophetic visions from Olivia make this such a charming game, was a very fun watch
This game was nothing but amazing. The rage of Ben, the wittiness of Brian, the slight jabs of Olivia and the steady but funny build up of Chris was just masterful and truly what Commander literally at home is all about.
The pain Ben suffers from people not paying for Rhystic Study is the most relatable feeling I've had with any Commander RUclips show. Every pod I play, I am the one pulling my hair out when I feel like I'm the only one trying to keep the tithe and study in-check.
The constant reminder of commander damage to torment Ben? *chef's kiss* And deliberately not paying the one? Olivia embodies the chaos I want to achieve as a commander player!
My wife says “fucking same”. I stg he has the best RNG ever to mankind and seeing 1 game where they dont edit content out and letting plays be the plays is tge best
Another episode with Ben??? Umm, YES PLEASE! Ben dying to his own commander's commander dmg is the cherry on top! Right after the moment he realizes it...
So many great moments, can't remember laughing that much in a while. Olivia constantly picking on Ben by not paying 1, Brian declaring no blocks to die to commander damage, Ben conceding, and of course, Chris's genius evil plan paying off. Best episode yet!
This is, without a doubt, the greatest game of Magic that i have ever witnessed. To see Ben Brode, the man who hates Commander Damage more than any other person in the entire world, killed, with Commander Damage, WITH HIS OWN COMMANDER.
So much fun to watch. Its amazing to see 4 people who genuinely love the game and love playing cards with each other. I love that Chris goes completely under the radar.
As a certified Commander Damage Hater, I think there is a place for it, and I understand why it's 21 (the original Elder Dragons were all 7 power so it was three unblocked attacks), but this game, while hilarious, was honestly a good example of why having it be below the starting life total seems ... off. The number needs to exist, but even if (in keeping the original spirit) it was 21 damage AND combat damage on three different turns, it would eliminate some of the feels bad moments that Voltron style decks can bring.
@@jklharris Hard disagree, there is so much removal in the game these days that can easily deal with voltron, and ton to shut down a commander focused deck. 21 commander dmg is fine, the argument for infect being more than 10 though i give some weight.

hey guys just wanted you to know that i rarely have anyone to play with and just your intro alone gives me all the nostalgia that magic should be. thanks you guys this show is so good
Honestly, if someone told me half of your subscribers signed up just for the earworm, 'lives in my brain rent free' opening music you use, it would not shock me. 😁💚🎶 Love watching you guys.
So many great souls in this amazing episode. Love and laughter in your lives and thank you for such amazing content. Also Ben, if you ever read this, marvel snap has given me so much enjoyment while dealing with cancer, thank you for the gift that is you and the rest of the amazing people at second dinner!
I love this show so much. It’s fun and goofy while still respecting its audience by understanding that we don’t need cards like Steve or swiftfoot boots read out loud Bonus points for Olivia’s just pure Goblin energy half of the time here.
Man, this group is a fucking riot!😂 Ben is such a fun guy, his laugh is so contagious! I love him to bits! I'm really loving this show more and more with each episode; the memes, the casual play style, the "who gives a shit, let's just have fun playing magic" mentality, it's all so great to see. Thanks for all that yinz do, this is such a fantastic group of people!
The intro and just total vibe of this show is literally the best. I don’t play mtg so I rarely know what’s going on, but I have so much fun watching anyway
No Olivia, you're not trying to Chaos, you are *doing* Chaos! I've also been known to go really really low on lands in some decks, iirc I have two that are under 30, and neither is a cEDH deck (but both are Green decks, so both run a LOT of ramp). I recently used Scavenged Brawler on a Brash Taunter... it was a very, very good little synergy to discover, all those ability synergize with him also being indestructible to just gain so much life. I think building a gladiator type deck around cards that often work together is very fun, but it's also a challenge. In my Burn deck I once had a DRC out and two lands and dug through some 20 cards without finding a single land. The deck runs 20 lands. It was agony. I think I went through 2 DRCs, but it might have been 3, just churning through my top deck and finding turd and after turd. I wish I was as salt-free as you guys when I draw garbage!
My favourite episode so far, mostly because of all of the rage from Ben but also because of how much everyone looked like they were having fun together.
I watched every week from the start of the channel, then went on hiatus, this is the start of my catch up comments. You guys all rock! Best gameplay channel ❤
Brian kept forgetting to lose life to his lands! Happens on the first land (he doesn't change the tablet but they change the score in post-production) And at 35:53 with the Stomping Ground, where they forgot even at post. Not complaining, just noting. Amazing fun game regardless
"I concede!" 😂 that was a great game! My Ghired deck runs Drizzt, Bruenor, Catti-Brie and Wulfgar. Creature tokens, equipment, +1/+1 counters and attack effects is a challenging mix.

Ben Brode playing Skullbriar but constantly arguing against Commander damage is certainly a choice. A hilarious one, in fact.
I respect the grind, honestly.
Can't believe Ben Brode's commander eliminated 2 people with commander damage
It makes sense though, it cuts off his fun. Making Skullbriar any bigger than a 21/21 feels less than ideal.

Olivia torturing Ben with commander damage and not paying the one is one of the funniest things in any of these episodes
I dunno Chris stealing Skullbriar to kill him with commander is the best.
Watching Ben have to kill people with commander dmg is an oddly satisfying conclusion to his anti-commander dmg campaign.
