Though it is a massive shame that the art direction for this game is terrible. It's so generic looking, in game cutscene animation is horrible and is the worst looking one out of the main 3 gungraves. Actual cell shading can go a long way and should have been done. The filter ain't cell shading
Happy to see you back Cvit, love your videos and this one was no exception. I just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to commend Iggymob's efforts in supporting G.O.R.E post-launch. I adore this game and a big reason for that is because of the amazing job Iggymob has done in supporting this game post-launch. They could have easily abandoned the game following it's unfortunate yet expected poor reception and likely low sales. However, they instead stuck to their guns and have continued to support the game with impressively thorough patches that have adressed practically ever minut issue I had in my inital hard playthrough and issues that I saw others complaining about online. Furthermore, they have listened to the fans and added much requested features like auto-fire, a cell-shade filter, improved visual flair on some demolition shots, and a fully-playable Bunji! I am extremely impressed by their dedication to the game and their lack of ego as shown by their willingness to outright remove certain, particularly rancid platforming and QTE sections. All I would like to see added at this point is a fully-playable Quartz though that would likely take much more effort than it did for Bunji. Regardless, these developers are awesome!
Every once in a while a game comes out only one guy on RUclips is fit to make the review for. This is one of those games and you're that guy. I wasn't disappointed. This game is defiantly on my list along with the first.
As someone who played the game through every single patch except the most recent one in April, here are some things you missed: - In the same patch that removed the laser grid section, all areas where you have to do platforming have been redesigned so you don't have to do that anymore. This even applies to the final level. - Your ability to break shields quicker is dependent on the melee attack power stat. At max level, you can break shields in a single hit. - You don't have to fully charge the multi-charge shot to use it. As long as you got some charge, you'll still perform some of the attack. Though I do agree that it was too slow for Grave to fully charge it up when it was first introduced in a patch (thankfully, this was fixed soon after). - One of the more recent patches allows you to stock up to 10 Demolitions Points, which makes it much easier to get S-Ranks.
As for my quick thoughts on this game, it's fun if incredibly flawed. It's cool to see that the devs are still working on this game long after its release. Though I do wish they would rebalance the game more so it would be easier to get S-Ranks, like buffing certain abilities like the Charge Shot to reward Arts.
After watching you stream this and go back and forth on how you felt about it, it's nice to see all your thoughts come together in a cohesive way. Excellent video as always Mr Cvit.
I enjoyed G.O.R.E. a fair amount, and I do have a remarkable amount of respect to RED Entertainment for actually giving this game a decent shot and trying to update certain flaws. But there are a few core issues that shouldn't exist, even when trying to emulate the feel of the first game. The length is easily the most glaring issue as it is WAY too long, which is a giant issue from OverDose. It's not as bad as OverDose as the gameplay is much more solid, and there aren't 3 barely different campaigns, but it still persists. I most definitely agree with the fact that the upgrade/progression is overly bloated and requires too much grinding to complete. The second biggest issue is the schizophrenic difficulty. I've heard horror stories of the train level very early on, and I have had a couple of issues, but my first warning sign was level 6. It was, and still is, overly difficult. Bunji is decently fun to play as him, and Quartz is not, but that hardly matters as there is a total of 3 levels where you play as them. I would give the plot shit for being INCREDIBLY dull and shitty, but this has kind of always been the case with the only story that was somewhat interesting being the first, and that's more because of the anime adaptation. This is a very middling game, but one that has been improving itself and trying to go after an unfortunately niche demographic. Luckily, it's on gamepass, so even more people have immediate access to it.
isn't it ironic how shit the story in the game is considering the anime is genuinely kino, I'd easily put it in my top 10, a fantastic character arc and a bittersweet ending for grave. also agreed on it being overly long for what it is and on the difficulty just being flatout weird, most levels feel too easy and then randomly hit you with an INSANE difficulty spike.
I feel like a lot of people are missing out on the entire purpose of the game; Obviously, it's flawed, and knowing of the game's purpose doesn't excuse many of them, but it's still very notable to know what kinds of games the Gungrave series are made to be. It's clear to me what the target audience is, and it's not the one a lot of people thought it was. I am glad that this video does clarify that, however.
Was wondering when/if you'd get around to covering this game. For a good long while you were the only game reviewer I knew of who'd talked about the other 2 games so I was increasingly curious to know your thoughts on this one. The statement "It makes me want to snap the disc in half, but I can't stop playing it" is something I relate to more than can be expressed with words. So many games in my collection elicit that kind of vibe from me.
Wow. They really tried to fix a lot, huh? I also played it at release and dropped it cause I was so annoyed by it. The perks made me feel like I had no chance till I grinded and certain enemies and bosses drove me mad! I'm very interested in going back and trying again now after this video. Thanks for covering the changes and other issues to keep in mind.
I didn't like this game when it came out and I'm still pretty hesitant to pick it back up even with all the patches released. You've highlighted pretty much every issue I had with the base version. If the devs do add remappable controls I'll give it another try but that'll be after I beat Nier Replicant, Vampire The Masquerade and Code Vein.
Just make sure with Nier Replicant, take your time. Don't do what I did and try to rush it. Doing that ruined a lot of the story beats for me. Replaying all of it from the start is really enhancing the entire game for me. Also when playing C, make another save file for D right before the Shadowlord's castle. It'll save a lot of time to get ending D. Otherwise playing over the A, B and C save file will make you play from THAT point again for the 4th time with no changes

@@teneesh3376 Jokes on you, I hated the story. What a joke.
This game is everything i wanted and then some. but the pacing and use of its characters really had issues (quartz and bunji only got two levels and a half between them which, granted for quartz given she's melee only, is understandable). I feel a lack of focus, but the heart's definitively in the right place. and i love it for that. I kinda wish we had access to dlc skins at a later date, tho.
1. Grave's Overdose and Death Ronin skins can now be bought on PSN Store/XBox Marketplace for $5 each. 2. A Patch came out that allows Bunji to be playable in every stage outside of 'Skyline' and his brief section in the Final Stage (the only stage he can't go to is Quartz's stage, 'Experiment Cave'.) You can purchase Bunji in-game for 30,000 DNA Points in the Lab Upgrade Menu in the characters section.
I just beat this game tonight. You pretty much articulated everything I feel about this game perfectly, though respectfully that train level is still pretty shitty. The signs are too potent, they don't even stop when you use a demolition shot, so you can die mid-cinematic. I feel as though that only made it through testing because nobody on the dev team thought to use demolition shots on the train level. I guess that should be my indication that's not the way to beat the level but I still find it to be lousy level design. Thank you for covering the Gungrave games so damn well
Who cares about yow hard it is to unlock to play as Bunji? At least we can play with him. There's plenty of games that would just not let you play as Bunji other than that one level. Not even ask you to pay for them, just straight up you still can't play all of DMCV with only V, Dante, or Nero...even right now. Or how there's no reason why MGS2 shouldn't have you able to play all the game as Snake. The Bunji criticism is understandable, but they made a fix that no one else has ever done before. They get plenty of credit for that alone. Of course playing as Quartz more would be nice, but she would need a major overhaul.
This is the perfect video discussing the dichotomy I find myself with regarding this game. Every little positive and negative were things that stuck out in one way or another. This was incredibly concise Keep up the great work man!!!
Good lord, the Asian Dev scene is a tragedy. For every Elden Ring there's 6 Wanted Deads, 5 Babylon Falls and 2 Gungrave GOREs. They don't have the passion for AAA games anymore. Look at the last Contra game. Fuckin atrocious.
Let’s hope Stellar Blade will be better than those. But non of these are totally bad, even Babylon Falls, which is the worst of the bunch if you ask me.
I think out of the ones you have planned, I think your Soulstice review/general dos and don'ts of action game design is the most interesting, and could be a great tool of reference for indie action game devs, similarly to how Shadiversity's videos on Medieval swordfighting in games are, for fantasy games.
I do hope that he looks positively on Soulstice in spite of its shortcomings. There's clear love and effort put into that game as well. For all its flaws, i still enjoy playing it, and sincerely hope that the devs will gain enough support to be able to improve the current game-- and even more so, make an even better sequel or two. And/or be able to make other cool, interesting and fun games.
I did play the PC version through gamepass. I can say the sound effects haven't had the same issues you experienced. I fucking loved this game, recommended it to my friends regardless of how jank it is just because games with this much soul do not come around nearly enough.
As bad as it was i was surprised iggymob stuck with it and started fixing what went wrong. Gungrave vr was hell and they left that to an unfair fate. But what they have done with gore even at the start showed me that this was the game they wanted to make even with songs like time to kill and falling into the black you can tell these guys had a vision and did more for their jank as hell product to keep it alive....unlike actblizz. I wanna see what iggymob can do in the future with great interest hell they might even give us an re spin off game where we can juggle a hunter and do an aerial rave on it.
This video finally got me to bite the bullet and order a physical copy of G.O.R.E for PS5. After loving the original and loathing Overdose, I'm very interested to see how this one holds up for me. Great video!
Gore difficulty is actually not bad if you beat the other difficulties prior to it since it unlocks upgraded equipment with higher fire rate and higher demolition shot accumulation. This game is definitely a blast from the past and definitely started playing it a lot more when it became playable on steam deck.
THE CHARGE SHOT HAS LEVELS AS OF THE MOST RECENT PATCH!!! IF YOU LET GO OF THE BUTTON EARLY IT DOES INDIVIDUAL SHOTS!!!!!!!! THE LONGER YOU HOLD IT THE MORE CHARGED SHOTS IN A ROW YOU DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@harlannguyen4048 I played the game at launch. The charge shot only had 1 level shot, which is now the most powerful in the 4 shot charge. The patch notes even say the multi stage charge shot was outright added.
Playing it now with all these patches its an easy 7.5/10 and very fun to blast through. Here’s hoping the Devs get to make a sequel, all things considered they’re still more competent than plenty of triple A devs
Janky unpolished but fun I’m probably one of the few people who played on day one and beat it a day after the patch seeing this video now kinda makes me want to go back
Personally, I think a barebones arcade style game like GORE could REALLY sell with online 3 player co-op. And maybe playable legacy characters as hidden unlocks....and even playable legacy bosses like Zell and Fangoram.
31:50. So turns out a lot of games (including this one) do have the option to turn off controller sounds, but it's a ps5 system setting. You need to turn down the sound all the way down and the sounds will play through your TV or AV speakers instead. I tested it myself. Die in this game with the setting all the way down, and Quartz yelling Grave would play through my AV speakers instead. Just note that I said a lot. Cause there are some that have it in the game options like RE4make or Death Stranding
One of the things I really disliked about the game is the sound design and the lack of more movement tech, it makes the gameplay feel too stiff, also the lack of good melee attacks.
Hey just finished watching you trash talking your way in to Yugioh and thought if after 2 years you were on going to continue the video series is literally soooo entertaining
I definitely am enjoying it, thx for the vid and I honestly can’t add much besides one thing. I honestly hate the moments in much bigger maps where you’re locked out of progress till every enemy is dead. Because one enemy way further back isn’t dead and locks me out of progress and ruins my beat combo. Smaller rooms are fine but once you get to later maps which increase in size, sometimes enemies you still need to kill are incredibly far from you. Which then requires you to go hunting them down. One of the first vietnam missions has a room where I had to hunt 2 enemies that were way more hidden then they should of been. I honestly hope they manage to ease thats but thats my only critique that doesn’t just repeat your points.
Nice to come here and se you give some valid critiques of the game. I really wanted to like it but bounced off hard early but it seems like these patches have made quite a difference so I'm considering giving this another shot now. I was really excited for the game before launch so i'd love a reason to go back and play it again.
Bought this on release, loved it even with the yank. Now that I know about the patches, I should go and have another playthrough at it. Thanks for informing me~
If it's had a ton of patches I might check it out again. I haven't played the first one but it looks like my style of game. The thing that put me off with this one was using photorealistic graphics instead of the timeless stylised look of the first one
this is exactly my type of shit, yea the cutscenes and voiceacting are absolute ass but the gameplay is fun and the music goes hard af, don't need more from a game
The opening on top of how much up and down stuffs you have to suffer and slog through with the knowledge of previous games in mind to tie in with your judgement experience to this game makes it resembling of the non-existent GUNGRAVE M.O.R.B
@Man Bat, I hope HiFI Rush gets a physical copy like Signalis recently got. Bit concerned that Shinji Mikami is leaving Tango Games, but HiFI did well I hear. Definitely outsold Forspoken. I'd like to see a 2000s FPS revival as well. Too many indie FPS games milking the Doom/Quake design.
I am so thankful and happy to see someone mention Soulstice as being a game that they are glad about existing. I know of its flaws/weird parts, but I still love it for stuff like its art direction and characters, gameplay and potential for an even better game. May the devs gain enough support to be able to make an even better sequel. Or two. And other cool games.
I love how instead of just complaining about the features you didn’t like in the games you review you always offer ways they can be improved upon or fixed! Shows that you actually care about the games you review
For anyone interested the anime is actually pretty good in my opinion, accept the animation gets really bad sometimes but the overall story is somber and a bit depressing.
Turbo Mode is cool, but nothing beats the catharsis of spamming the button when Grave shoots and does baller ass moves Also the fact that Gunlock isn't in this game is severely disappointing to me, that song fucks
I got the game, but at first I thought it was based on anime I saw sometime ago, only to learn that it’s other way around and the games came out first.
When was the 1.0 update? I beat this at the end of January and didn't run into more than half the bigger issues. I never had that many shielders or missile guys to deal with on normal mode. I only ran into an issue in the last 2 levels and had to go to easy mode, but that's because I didn't want to grind for upgrades and had almost no aoe options.
26:30 I do overall agree with your review (I already ran through it thrice and watching this makes me wanna play it agaon oddly enough) I have to say that the point upgrade system didnt bother me all that much. Yeah, its a grind to buy stuff, but you can always respec your points for free and respend them however you want. So, I basically just played the game and was just cycling my points Borderlands style to see how fast I can destroy people and drive up my Art score. You are 100% right about Quartz IMHO. Easily the most jank part of the game
This game is just like Stranger of Paradise, an action masterpiece hated by nerds who cry about getting filtered by the combat cause they can't comprehend the sheer beauty of it
I was having a ton of fun with this game till I hit the second boss which just kicked my ass into next week, it feels like it wants you to use mechanics the game doesn't actually have. It's so unabashedly PS2 era though, holy shit, even for its flaws its the exact same shit you'd see in a AA release of the time. Maybe I should go back to it.
i made the horrible choice of trying to beat the game on hard mode PRE 1.0 patch before beating easy or normal. it was horrible but i got so close before the patch finally came out and i realized you’re intended to beat easy and normal for the gold guns aswell as the better coffin. ive since 100% the game (excluding the brandon heat “skin”) which i was actually working on getting
i played a lot of gungrave overdose. more than the first game cause i actually owned overdose. so if this game is better than i wont regret the 50 dollars purchase.
Had this for a couple of weeks but haven't gotten around to it(still got one more level of agony to clear in Overdose). Good to hear it's at least better than that. Btw, what'd you order from Wendys?
I dropped GORE about 10-12 stages in on PC Game Pass, half because KBM controls were really hurting my hands. Between this video and setting up DS4Windows I think I might reinstall and try it out while waiting for Wild Hearts to be patched into playability on my midrange PC.
I have this installed thanks to gamepass but never got around to trying it, and it seems that was to my benefit! Nice to see the devs putting so much work into a game that usually wouldn't. So do you stand by the statement that those who haven't played the original won't get much put of it or have the updates helped that at all? Either way, seems I should stay focused oh Hi-Fi Rush, which speaking of, any chance for your take on it? Edit: oh and I believe you can go into the system settings to turn off the controller speakers. If you're using it on PC, I'm not sure but I would think there's a program you can install to change its settings.
While I'll admit G.O.R.E. is the reason I got into Gungrave in the first place, I highly agree with everything you said about the game. It's a weird entity where on one hand it's definitely a bad game, but with its spirit and the devs showing passion in making things better, it's definitely more enjoyable than the majority of stuff on the market, almost kind of unapologetic about it as it tries to replicate (albeitly flawed) the original design. As someone who tortured myself to complete the game (yes, that also includes the GORE difficulty), GORE isn't as bad as one would think. Unfortunately, the best route to go is to first grab the golden guns and EVO coffin for both better DPS and faster charging. Then, honestly just spam the sniper demolition shot. It instantly kills any non boss enemy and heals a TON of health, and Executioner's blood is by far the silver medalist DS to use as it stuns enemies, deals tons of damage, and heals a pretty hefty amount of HP. Though, I will say, FUCK TURONTY.
Despite its issues, this game's very existence is a miracle. I hope we continue to see AA titles like these see the light of day.
Fr. We need more AA games.
Nowadays AA are better than AAA (i dont count indie games bc 99% are trash)

Not even ask you to pay for them, just straight up you still can't play all of DMCV with only V, Dante, or Nero...even right now. Or how there's no reason why MGS2 shouldn't have you able to play all the game as Snake.
The Bunji criticism is understandable, but they made a fix that no one else has ever done before. They get plenty of credit for that alone. Of course playing as Quartz more would be nice, but she would need a major overhaul.
This is the perfect video discussing the dichotomy I find myself with regarding this game. Every little positive and negative were things that stuck out in one way or another. This was incredibly concise
Keep up the great work man!!!
That really does sound like it'd make for a rad video, agreed
It always did that, though. The problem was that it took too long for Grave to charge up all 4 levels (which was fixed in a later patch).
That sudden reference to Kootra at 19:32 was an absolute slap in the face of nostalgia lol
Janky unpolished but fun
I’m probably one of the few people who played on day one and beat it a day after the patch seeing this video now kinda makes me want to go back
Personally, I think a barebones arcade style game like GORE could REALLY sell with online 3 player co-op.
And maybe playable legacy characters as hidden unlocks....and even playable legacy bosses like Zell and Fangoram.
This review is great! It's clear that you like the game but still give it a fair criticism.
13:35 - 13:46 he way you describe it is like playing Blood on Extra crispy difficulty
“Lets the bodies hit the Gore “
I watch this video at least three times a week.
Man i had to tear myself away from ishin to watch this. Glad to see another cvit vid
Nice to come here and se you give some valid critiques of the game. I really wanted to like it but bounced off hard early but it seems like these patches have made quite a difference so I'm considering giving this another shot now. I was really excited for the game before launch so i'd love a reason to go back and play it again.
This overview was great i just cleared the Gungrave anime adaptation today. Had me in tears and was effective definitely peeping GORE.
Bought this on release, loved it even with the yank.
Now that I know about the patches, I should go and have another playthrough at it. Thanks for informing me~
I AM SO GLAD YOU COVERED THIS GAME YAY
gungrave is def one of my top 10 games
I’ve been hyped to see your review of GORE since it came out, you didn’t disappoint
The first Gungrave is best ever, nothing tops those vibes
If it's had a ton of patches I might check it out again. I haven't played the first one but it looks like my style of game. The thing that put me off with this one was using photorealistic graphics instead of the timeless stylised look of the first one
As someone who played this game on the Xbox Series X, I can tell you that the sound effects weren't as bad as in the PS5 version.
this is exactly my type of shit, yea the cutscenes and voiceacting are absolute ass but the gameplay is fun and the music goes hard af, don't need more from a game
The opening on top of how much up and down stuffs you have to suffer and slog through with the knowledge of previous games in mind to tie in with your judgement experience to this game makes it resembling of the non-existent GUNGRAVE M.O.R.B
This thumbnail got me feeling
SO HIGH
Sounds like you smoked сrасk
this is incredibly nut worthy. thank you based god Cvit, for the beautiful bounty that is this video, and may you get yourself some well earned rest.
Glad games like Gungrave Gore: Evil West, Wanted Dead, No More Heroes 3, and Soulstice exist. I missed the PS2/GC/Xbox years of gaming.
also Hifi Rush and Evil West
NMH3 is straight trash.
@@Gruntvc what's some of 2000s fps?
Cvit just dropped I’m calling off work and watching this video on repeat!!
Im a dying hard fan of soundtracks and pains me to hear the whole intro of the video and shazam failing to find it lol.
Hello. I've only watched the gungrave anime, which I loved. What the fuck is happening. Thank you, please.
Turbo Mode is cool, but nothing beats the catharsis of spamming the button when Grave shoots and does baller ass moves
Also the fact that Gunlock isn't in this game is severely disappointing to me, that song fucks
the top left corner of the video: 💀
Bruh 💀
I had no idea this franchise existed till an hour ago when I heard you mentioning it in your Shinobi video. I'm going to check it out later. thanks!
Who up GOREing they worm
*Phos pfp detected*
Still can't believe that this is a real game. Glad that it exists though.
Thanks for the coverage.
I love this game but I understand why people don't xD
Never heard of this game but hey, it was fun listening to you talk about it.
This game is just like Stranger of Paradise, an action masterpiece hated by nerds who cry about getting filtered by the combat cause they can't comprehend the sheer beauty of it
16:20 actually they sorta did patch this. Fall 2 (or 3) times and the gate your supposed to jump over automatically opens.
The controller audio thing is in fact a PlayStation 5 Settings based problem and fix.
THIS GUY GETS IT! Seriously, thank you for pointing out the positives of this game, instead of piling on insults like so many other reviewers.
Like you and am just happy this even got made. I have to wait until a good Sale, but I look forward to getting it.
I love it when he said it was made with Cheeto dust and a dream
I was having a ton of fun with this game till I hit the second boss which just kicked my ass into next week, it feels like it wants you to use mechanics the game doesn't actually have.
It's so unabashedly PS2 era though, holy shit, even for its flaws its the exact same shit you'd see in a AA release of the time. Maybe I should go back to it.
i made the horrible choice of trying to beat the game on hard mode PRE 1.0 patch before beating easy or normal. it was horrible but i got so close before the patch finally came out and i realized you’re intended to beat easy and normal for the gold guns aswell as the better coffin. ive since 100% the game (excluding the brandon heat “skin”) which i was actually working on getting
i also had no problem with the train levels or rlly no levels for that matter. but ofc sometimes they were frustraing. overall i enjoyed this game
i played a lot of gungrave overdose. more than the first game cause i actually owned overdose. so if this game is better than i wont regret the 50 dollars purchase.
19:45 grave looks like a og pso2 character
I literaly just went to your channel to see when your last upload was 🤣
This indeed is a game
Can't wait until you re review the switch version lol
You can customize the controls in the PS4 menu separate from any game you're playing.
Oh, those sound issues are inexcusable. Half the enjoyment of action games are the sounds of lasers and punching things.
Had this for a couple of weeks but haven't gotten around to it(still got one more level of agony to clear in Overdose). Good to hear it's at least better than that. Btw, what'd you order from Wendys?
Kind of disappointing that Gungrave still hasn't got a good game that isn't jank yet, despite its anime adaptation is a certified classic.
At this rate, the jank is just part of the charm
On the platforming section with containers - if you kill enough enemies gate will just open, you can skip that shit
I dropped GORE about 10-12 stages in on PC Game Pass, half because KBM controls were really hurting my hands. Between this video and setting up DS4Windows I think I might reinstall and try it out while waiting for Wild Hearts to be patched into playability on my midrange PC.
CAN WE GET MUCH HIGHER!
I remember crying at the end of it's anime. It was good
Ordered a copy of $15 CAD today. I'm eager to play it!
The legend returns
I do think this game looks terrible BECAUSE of its bad art direction. Its not just bland its a huge letdown from the original.
Getting this as soon as it goes on sale, jank be damned. Thanks Cvit, you never dissapoint
If you're using it on PC, I'm not sure but I would think there's a program you can install to change its settings.
love your godamn videos, absolute treat to watch 👍
I hope to see more fun/jank games related to forgotten 2000s action anime. C'mon, guys! It's not too late for a Heat Guy J or a Gad Guard game
Platinum it this morning not a bad game hope they add more dlc and characters from the universe hell I’ll take a horde mode
8:05 GA-RAVE-U?! GA-RAVE-U!! (Engrish is a treasure.)
